These are some games that look much better in VR, like they’re completely different games. Noting that I mostly play in immersive/cinema screen mode.

Bayonetta – a game that is praised on its own and looks amazin in VR. You’d never guess it’s more than 10 years old.
Star Wars: Battlefront II – flying missions are particularly breathtaking.
AER: Memories of Old – was free on Epic, not a great game but well suited for VR.
Everreach: Project Eden – again not a great game to start with, but much better in VR.
Devil May Cry 5 – it’s almost like playing an action movie in VR. It has performance issues though, would be amazing it it worked well.
GRIS – given it’s a 2D side scroller you wouldn’t think VR adds much, but it surprisingly does.
ABZÛ – another one tat seems made for VR, but doesn’t have native support.
Vanquish – made by the same developer as Bayonatta, not as great but still good and much better in VR.

An HMD isn’t always the better option compared to a monitor. It depends on the HMD itself, mostly the resolution, the PC hardware, whether you are susceptible to motion sickness, if you are playing competitively etc.

There are some games for which 3D on a big screen adds so much to the experience that using a monitor would be missing out. Most RPGs fall in this category, lifelike characters add a lot to the story and the interactions. Some unexpected ones like GRIS which is a 2.5D side-scroller. Various others that for some reason look like a different game in 3D, Bayonetta, Everreach and DMC5 come to mind. Colorful settings or generally great environments tend to work well in an HMD, ex. ABZU, Planet Alpha, AER: Memories of Old.

Then there are some for which 3D either doesn’t work or doesn’t add much. Many FPS titles probably fall here, especially the fast-paced ones. Classical 2D/2.5D/Isometric games with no depth information or no underlying 3D models. You would still get a big screen so it depends whether you are willing to trade in some clarity and maybe performance for that.

There are also some for which the experience takes a big hit. Controls for example, not all games play that well when you cant see the keyboard. In Ghostrunner chapters I played though with a controller took twice as much compared to the average. Then there might be performance. Even in plain 2D the VR environment will take quite a chunk of GPU time, on a 1080ti it seems to be around 20-30%. You might not be willing to trade in some quality just for the bigger screen.

Personally I only use my HMD for gaming ever since I got the G2 which has a decent resolution. But mostly because I’m currently skipping most games that don’t work well.

If you have a high resolution headset I recommend adding a custom resolution, depending on your monitor. 2560×1440 seems ok on a reverb G2.
This is already part of the hints in vorpX and there’s also a tutorial in the configuration app. But I find it really improves the experience for games like GRIS because there’s lots of details and smooth shapes. Also your GPU has a better chance of being able to push the frame rates with this game.

Just note that you need to change the actual resolution of your monitor before starting this game. Even in full screen the resolution option in GRIS does not seem to change the actual monitor resolution, it just renders at a lower resolution and upscales. So it does not show resolutions higher than the current resolution of the monitor it’s running on.

I just tried Seasons after Fall. It’s also a relaxing puzzle parallax side scroller with great drawn animations.
There’s no official profile yet, but I created one based on GRIS (they both use Unity) and it works quite well. It’s published in cloud profiles so you can simply import it.

I bought GRIS just to try this and I was not dissapointed! Amazing. Foreground and background layers aswell as some transparent layers works so well in VR.

I just got Panzer Dragoon Remake to work using the Subnautica (rift) profile. And it’s definitely in 3D/VR. But, you have to turn head tracking off or the controller won’t work.

Also, apart from what the settings are at concerning the 3D/VR effect. Changing the 3D slider doesn’t change or enhance the 3D at all. It’s stuck in what it’s at.

If anyone wants to try to make a better more customizable profile here is a list of Unity games and profiles found in the VorpX cloud. So far I’ve only gotten this one to work.

Hi, I was wondering if this game could be checked by others, the Unity 5 base profile and the GRIS profile work when attaching to it and give G3D, even FOV can be changed, the only issue is that you almost can’t move your head around the scene (you can move it some milimeters with the GRIS profile) and the 3D strength is wrong.

I am a fairly new VR/Vorpx user and have been loving the experience of trying out different games with this software.

I was pretty curious to see GRIS getting G3D support with the new update since the game is a flat side-scroller. I hadn’t played the game prior but had it installed and thought to give it a go thinking the 3D would probably have minimal impact if any.

You might want to adjust the screen to your liking at first.

The G3D ends up giving the game a visually striking pop-up book effect that fits with the overall aesthetic so well you’d think the game was designed to be released in this format. The impression seemed different than the popping effect you would normally see with the Z3D in my opinion. I found it such a unique VR experience that I felt like it deserved a recommendation post as GRIS with Vorpx has been one of the most visually pleasing games I’ve run through my headset so far. Give it a try!
