So i tried all the custom resolutions like 1280×1440 1600×1800. […] Anyways, It simply does not work and does not make the image quality near native either, Here’s what you do instead. Go into nvidia control panel, manage 3d settings and turn on all of the DSR options and set smoothness to 0. Go into game and pick one of the higher supersampling resolutions, i prefer 2720×1536 which offers way better and I mean way the hell better resolution then any those 8:9 do. With a really fast pc you should be able to run buttery smooth. Go into vorpx menu set to letterbox 2 with image zoom of 1.00 the max and adjust the 3d fov or 2d fov just by a hair and that my friend is some true VR right there.

Using a 8:9 custom resolution is superior to DSR in multilple ways:

    1. It does not involve additional downsampling
    2. It can solve FOV issues in many games
    3. It keeps the rendering overhead as low as possible, effectivly enhancing performance.

Well, let’s let the public decide for themselves. Try my way and see what you think.

Try to get the 8:9 resolutions working. If you get it working, it’s objectively and measurably superior due to the three reasons mentioned above. Using 16:9 DSR resolutions is a waste of GPU resources.

Ralf is 100% correct. Additionally, nothing’s stopping you from using DSR with a 8:9 resolution if you want a crisper picture. Crank it up beyond 4K if your system can handle it. It’ll always give you better performance than a relative 16:9 resolution – see Ralf’s #3.

Ive had success using these resolutions with Skyrim, GTA V and Fallout 4 and it is supremely awesome. Such a huge performance gain as well as improved image quality!

Maybe you could describe your process for getting custom resolution working?

I’ve tried 8:9 custom resolutions in Fallout4, but couldn’t get the Oculus image to be anything other than a portrait view with a squashed x-axis, which I’m sure isn’t the right result.

I’ve created an nVidia control panel custom resolution, set monitor to that resolution, changed iSize in Fallout4Prefs.ini. I’m using vorpX virtual cinema mode.

So I’m left tinkering; reversed width and height values for custom resolution (1280×1440 / 1440×1280), searched reddit posts, but can’t find what I’m doing wrong, and I like the sound of supremely awesome.

The 8:9 portrait images you are seeing are the goal of this. This is basically how native apps work, rendering an 8:9 image for each eye that does exactly cover one half of the Rift screen.

This doesn’t make sense for Virtual Cinema Mode though, just for full VR. For games that you want to play in Virtual Cinema Mode using normal widescreen resolutions is the right thing to do.

BTW: You can also use any other resolution now in full VR mode now. A good way to get part of the performance/quality enhancement of custom resolutions is using 4:3 resolutions like 1600×1200.

I do that quite often since it’s possible. Provides a quick and easy way to get many games working in full VR without having to deal with FOV at all. Just select 1600×1200 (or any other 4:3 res), zoom out a few notches in vorpX ([SHIFT][MOUSEWHEEL] or ImageZoom in the ingame menu) until the FOV feels right, and you’re good to go. Not perfect in every case, but a nice way to get games working as fast as possible. For example if you just want to briefly check something out.

I can’t decide between Bioshock Infinite and Dishonored as my favorite game with Vorpx/OculusCV1 so far. I know that I much prefer the custom ARs and they aren’t a load of ****.
