I’ve been getting a few crashes in BI now as well. It is seemingly at random intervals though. I played through the entire opening sequence and it worked fine. Then I got the section just before you start the first fight sequence and it crashed…

I’m not too surprised about that, this is pretty much the same with the general Steam issue, that also happens on seemingly random machines (with seemingly random games). What surprises me more is that it happens thirty seconds into the game. But who knows what Steam does…

Be it as it may, there is a good chance that the coming update will solve this, provided it is indeed related to the general Steam problem.

I have also had success with the cracked version of BI (no guilt as I own the full version through Steam).

It is strange how, if this is a DRM issue, it affects some people and not others. However this certainly seems to be the best explanation as it is now working on my machine without fault, whereas before it would crash after 30 seconds every single time.

I can confirm that it works with a crack. Didn’t work before, had the same 30second crash as anyone else. Because of missing HDD space, I can’t properly install the game in steam anymore. But now that it’s apparently a DRM problem, can anyone try this game in steam offline mode? Maybe that works.

If that is the case, then there is some hope that the changes done to avoid startup crashes with some Steam games will also help with this issue. It would fit in so far as these issues also do not affect everyone.

Keep your fingers crossed, the update will be available within a week.

    Hi All,
i confirm the cracked version of the game works fine.
Here is the checklist to play Bioshock Infinite with the Oculus Rift if you have bought the steam version of the game.

we have to replace the binary file BioShockInfinite.exe, set your language and copy your savegame files.

    1. First, check your version of Bioshock (right click, details on the binary file). Normally you have the propriety “file version : 1.1.22.55730” if you have the last update.
    2. Download only the crack for your version of Bioshock
search for “bioshock infinite 1.1.22.55730” for example
    or go there
    3. Run Update_v1.1.22.55730.exe from the /Update dir to install the Update
    4. Copy over the cracked content from the /Crack dir to Binaries\Win32 dir.
    6. then change the language in the ini files (LumaEmu.ini and Unleashed.ini for me) and in d:\Users\user_name\Documents\My Games\BioShock Infinite\XGame\Config\XEngine.ini language=XXX
    7. You have to copy your savegame files too, from the steam clound
    c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\XXXXXXXX\8870\remote\savedata\ to local
    c:\Users\user_name\AppData\Local\SKIDROW\8870\Storage\savedata\

considering the cracked game works I am thinking we have a DRM issue.

The top/bottom distortion is an artifact of the ‘Smart’ aspect ratio mode. You can get rid of it completely by selecting another aspect ratio mode (display page of the in-game menu).

The solution I prefer though is choosing a 5:4 or 4:3 screen res (1280×1024 or 1600×1200), which makes life much easier for the ‘Smart’ mode, resulting in less top/bottom distortion. 16:9 modes are clearly the worst choice in this regard. Depending on graphics card and driver settings there is a certain chance though that only 16:10 modes are displayed fullscreen on your Rift.

    Thanks again Ralf.

What screen resolution and aspect ratio have you set your ingame settings to? I currently have it set to 1920x1080p, 16:9 aspect ratio. Is there a better one to use?

I have noticed a large amount of barrel distortion around the periphery of my view when looking up and down (eg the tops of buildings get stretched dramatically as I look up and down at them), something I did not notice at all in the other games I have tried so far (Dirt 2/3 & Grid).

It kind of makes me feel uneasy after a while =0) Is this because I have configured something wrong? I think it might have something do to with my screen resolution and aspect ratio, although I have tried a few different combinations and it always seems to be the same problem.

The FOV should be set as high as possible in the games video options. Additionally you can do an .ini tweak, which makes definitely sense:

    – Open XUserOptions.ini in [My Documents]\My Games\BioShock Infinite\XGame\Config in a text editor
    – Search for “MaxUserFOVOffsetPercent” and change the current value to something around 30.0 .
    – Setting the in-game FOV slider to the right now gives you a horizontal FOV of ~90° which is what you want in the Rift.

Regarding 1:1 headtracking you have to try different values for the “Head Tracking Sensitivity” in vorpX. This value is dependent on the mouse sensitivity you have chosen in-game, so unfortunately there is no absolute answer for the right setting here.

    Hpoe that helps.

I had the same problem ( 30 second crash ) on both Portal 2 and Bioshock. Yesterday my wife was out for the night and I got a huge urge to play Bioshock. Since i’ve been trying everything possible to make it work with vorpx for the last few weeks , I decided to get a cracked version of the game ( feeling less guilty since I bought it on steam) And it worked , I played a few hours without any crashes. Dont know if this info can help you Ralf but I felt like sharing it.

We need 3d for Outlast now and the world will be perfect.

I’m having the exact same problem. Every since I installed Vorpx, Steam games that are expected to hook with Vorpx crash at the launcher or barely into the game.
    This includes:
    Bioshock Infinite
    Skyrim
    Portal 2

Other steam games work fine (i.e. XCOM, Dawn of War 2 – anything not advertised as compatible with Vorpx). I’ve completely uninstalled Vorpx and I still get the crashing. Anyone have any ideas?
