In reply to: Bioshock Remastered?
RalfKeymasterThere was a profile including Direct VR for the initial release version of the remasters, currently both are disabled though since some changes were made to both games with a patch which vorpX didn’t like. It’s likely (but not 100% certain!) that they will work again in the next vorpX version.
In general the DX9 versions are much better with vorpX though, so that’s not really a loss. There’s not much point in the remasters in regard to enhancements (mostly just slightly better textures), but they run much worse with vorpX due to a performance degrading hack that was necessary to make them work at all.
Judging from Steam’s Bioshock store page you seem to get access to the originals too when purchasing the remasters (“Contains both BioShock™ and BioShock™ Remastered!”).
I can recommend the original DX9 Bioshock 1+2 fully. Both have full Direct VR support, and the atmosphere is just perfect for VR.

baggygParticipantI’ve been continuing the game on a monitor and found there are also infrequent crashes. Not as much as when using it with vorpX but definitely there.
I therefore conclude the issue is actually with Bioshock 2 itself. In anything VorpX just exaggerates the underlying issue. I suspect there is some memory limit being reached or similar. I will look around for help on the web but feel free to ignore this as don’t want you to go on a wild goose chase when the game is most probably the cause

RalfKeymasterCan’t replicate here (un-)fortunately. Only issue I encountered is that the rotation scan doesn’t work directly after loading your savegame, otherwise neither the cutscene nor the underwater walk cause any issues, with or without Direct VR. Rotation scanning does work again after the underwater walk.
Unlikely, but maybe it’s somehow settings related. Could you send me your [Users]\[Your User]\AppData\Roaming\Bioshock2Steam folder? That probably contains all settings related files.

baggygParticipantOk, I presume if its a profile update, I can pick that up from the cloud profiles?
Thanks for the resolution tip. On UE3 games the performance is usually there to push it passed the 1280 x 1024 recommendation (on a 1080ti). If I can alter the config I usually try for 2560 x 2048, which looks great (I use this in Fallout: New Vegas). I haven’t tried to get in a higher 5:4 / 4:3 resolution as yet with Bioshock but I may give it a try. Unfortunately even with a custom resolution set up in nvidia control panel some games don’t offer me more than 1080 height.

RalfKeymasterInteresting, I’ll check whether something can be done. Most games check within short intervals whether a gamead is connected or not, but maybe Bioshock 2 doesn’t do that anymore once it found one for the first time. That would be a possible explanation.
If you encounter more Direct VR issues (especially crashes), it would be great if you could send me related savegames. Unreal Engine is a bitch regarding Direct VR. Some games less, others more. No promises that all potential crashes can be fixed though.

baggygParticipantI’ve done a bit of testing and found a way around all of these current issues – without too much fuss. I suspect the internal checking of the gamepad within Bioshock 2 is causing the issue.
Crashing During the water scene – Played through this part in non-vr. When you get to Atlantic Express seems fine again thus far.
Direct VR Scan during same level – again play with mouse emulation / non-VR through this section. Once in Atlantic Express (about 3 minutes later), the scan succeeds again.
Gamepad not working – Found a simple sequence to get this working. Simply don’t have the xbox controller switched on when entering the game. Once you have run a successful scan turn on the controller. The issue only occurs if it is on whils the scan is run.
Thanks for quick reply Ralf. Bioshock 2 is fantastic by the way. Actually makes the game very creepy indeed :-)

RalfKeymasterWith Direct VR enabled the gamepad emulation is supposed to be disabled automatically to allow gamepads to always work natively in that case regardless of how the emulation is configured in the vorpX menu. Maybe the according flag in the Bioshock 2 profile isn’t set correctly, but that’s just a guess. I’ll check that.
One thing you could try yourself is resetting the profile to default in case you changed anything gamepad related. The default setting is supposed to behave like described above (unless there is indeed some issue in this regard).

MyrilionParticipant2. Bioshock 2
I’m puzzled. On my machine (Win10) the DirectVR hack of “Bioshock 2” crashed every 10 minutes, it was unplayable. I had to play it in normal Vorpx mode. I found the gameplay very annoying, repetitive and pointless. It was a struggle to finish the game.
“Bioshock 3” works well in DirectVR, but has some issues with shadows, lighting and in-game videos not showing. You will miss some facets of the story without even noticing.
My personal list:
Since I’ve never expected a true, native VR experience from VorpX, I mostly enjoyed the 3D cinema mode. I still have to reset my headset way below my normal head position, because Ralf doesn’t seem to be able to deal with or even acknowledge this bug, but whatever: It works. No longer neck stiffness from looking above all the time. That said I had lots of fun in “Dragon Age 1”, “Dragon Age 2”, “Dragon Age: Inquisition”, “Resident Evil Revelations”, “Gothic 3”, “The Witcher 3”, “Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons”, “Bioshock 1”.

Bioshock 1Jun 13, 2017 at 8:55pm #165173In reply to: Rank your 5 best Vorpx games.
TiggerdyretParticipantI only have a top 3 myself as I don’t want to include games I haven’t truly played. I have tried a lot that either didn’t run well enough or wasn’t supported yet.
1. Dishonored: It works so well in VR. No big hands and very little tweaking before it ran perfectly. I really like the gameplay for VR. Stealthing + being a completely OP character is such a rush in VR. It plays well with a controller. I mapped D-up and D-Down to “Reset Cam” and “Edge Peek” through Pinnacle game profiler, and then ran the rest of the controls with the games controller support, which works perfectly. I decided to just set it up manually without Direct VR, because the scan only works in some places. 19020×1440 runs fine on my gtx 980. I also set the image zoom to 0.70 and fov to 90, which helped with the alaising and image quality and weirdly also made the player height seem more natural.
2. New Vegas. This is just such great game, but took a lot of time to set up with a decent mod list. I made guide on how to set it up manually as Direct VR wasn’t out, when I played it. Took a lot of time to set up, but played so well. I think I spent 40 hours in VR in that game.
3. Bioshock Infinite. The game looks gorgeous, though the gameplay is nauseating. But it is fun flashing through the sky. I haven’t played that much, but I might give it another whirl, when my VR tolerance has increased again.

chisel316ParticipantHi Jim,
Thanks for responding. I get this error with Bioshock, Bioshock 2, Bioshock Infinite, Mirror’s Edge and Alien Isolation. I got the same missing dll error as well. The workaround isn’t that great because most of the time I’m not quick enough to resume the watcher in time for it to properly hook. The Steam games that still work are Skyrim, The Forest, Borderlands 2 and Fallout 4. Thanks for the info about the log. I’ll let you know if I figure anything out.
Peace \/
