Thanks for the update Ralf, it’s really awesome that you’re keeping us in the loop like this. It’s always nice to get updates, especially when the news is good.

How’s the performance with Vive in VorpX’s Virtual Cinema mode? Not top priority I’m sure, but as someone with a weak VR stomach for artificial motion, I’ll likely spend most my time there. I know Steam has their own theater, but I suspect VorpX will have the superior solution with stereo3D and better performance and comfort.

Head tracking: Just works. If I have to nitpick then about the base stations which don’t seem to have an on/off switch, so the motor is spinning all the time. At least I didn’t find one. Easy to circumvent, but unnecessary.

Just to second RJBaer, in the SteamVR popup click “SteamVR” then “Settings”. In there, click “Enable Bluetooth Communication” and make sure “put Base Station in Standby Mode when VR is not in use” is checked.

Also, there are some fixes in the beta branch of SteamVR that make the basestations wake up faster. Worth opting into. (Right click SteamVR in Steam, properties, Betas tab, select “beta – SteamVR Beta Update” from the dropdown below “none”.)

I turn mine off because I can just faintly hear the closest one to my desk, like a DVD drive spinning.

Just another Vive owner wanting to mention that I’m looking forward to Vive support, and that I support the choices you’ve made. I know what to expect, and I’ll be buying as soon as the Vive support is available.

In my case, I have a weak stomach for most artificial motion, so I fully expect I’ll get most of my use from the Theater mode. Really looking forward to that, but I’ll give the 3D options a try as well.

Doing room scale in retroactively applied VR would result in you being able to walk through walls and cause a lot of other unwanted issues. The recommendation for all games will be playing seated.

Just for my own $0.02, I know there are a lot of issues to consider, but I’d be absolutely fine with being able to walk through walls. I think most of us roomscale guys know to avoid walking through them unless we basically want to noclip. :)
