@Ralph :
thank you for your detailed explanations.
Let’s hope future VR headsets won’t use SteamVR’s OpenXR.
So one thing I have to figure out :
– does Varjo always use SteamVR’s OpenXR when it’s told to use OpenXR ?
– or is it a problem I created on my PC ?
When I was trying to reuse Reverb G2, I did a few things. I uninstalled OpenXR. Maybe I don’t have the right version.
In Windows (11) installed “Applications” list, I have “OpenXR for Windows Mixed Reality”.
But I think I had “OpenXR” instead at the beginning (after installing Varjo Base, I don’t know before because I didn’t checked recently).
Maybe I should look a way to reinstall a working version of OpenXR, but I don’t know how to.
For now, Varjo support did not answered to me.
@dellrifter22 :
thank you for these informations !
Can you tell us what do you have in installed “Applications” list in Windows concerning OpenXR ?
I have the OpenXR error on Bioshock. But with SteamVR VorpX option it sometimes freeze, wich it never does with Reverb G2 OpenXR (so with recent games I don’t think it would works very well, and it doesn’t seems to with Metro serie).
Did you try Metro Exodus ? I didn’t try much games with Varjo for now.
Wich games would you recommand me to try, that you know it works with OpenXR ?
Happens with both Quest 2 and Rift S. Any idea what could this be? Tried two games so far. Amnesia Machine for Pigs and original Bioshock.
Something to note, I can pull up the VorpX menu in the headset over the frozen image when that happens. Can even do the 3D scan but that does nothing to fix it.
Thanks I will give that a go later, Sylvan. The weird thing about B2 Remastered so far is that lowering everything both in-game and in Vorpx settings doesn’t seem to affect it at all, and my GPU/CPU aren’t really struggling whatsoever (they are low green in FPSVR). It’s like the game just decided to be 30-60 fps no matter what. Playing it in Z-normal puts it at a good 90fps right away, which is the same fps as I have set in Virtual Desktop. It’s a shame original B2 crashes because that one works perfectly before doing so.
I’ve had some more luck with Bioshock Infinite though. Seems to be working well enough, apart from some occasional stutters and the text being so small that I can barely make it out. Will have to test it some more though.
If you are currently using the regular vorpX, try the beta. I recently took another stab at this completely unexplicable Bioshock 2 crash issue, but couldn’t replicate it anymore here. I’m still unsure whether it really is gone, since I didn’t change anything spcifically to address it, so I might just have gotten lucky, but it’s worth a shot. Maybe it’s really gone this time.
As far as the remaster is concerned, you should easily be able to run it at 90fps. While the Bioshock remasters technically are fairly bad DX9>DX11 ports with an insane amount of unnecessary overhead caused by replicating DX9 behavior with DX11 instead of rewriting the game renderer in ‘true’ DX11 fashion, on your rig that shouldn’t be an issue.
Not much to recommend here except checking for tools that might interfere by also hooking into games.
Update: Tried using Bioshock 2 original instead of Remastered (since this is advised anyway) and while the framerate is a proper 120fps here and everything is looking great, the game always crashes within a minute or so of starting a new game or entering the game world(it doesn’t crash while in main menu). The 3rd DirectVR scan (rotational) seems to be taking longer than on other games and making some strange in-game noises while doing so, but otherwise that works. There is no error message, just straight CTD.
Seems this is a DX9/Geometry3D issue since I can play it fine with DX10 in z-adaptive mode. I tried just about any crash fix I could find like allocating more memory to texture streaming, as well as giving both VD and Airlink a go, but no luck… Can anyone else get this game to work with Geo3D in Vorpx?
Hey I was surprised and delighted to find the Bioshock profiles back on Vorpx so I wanted to try Bioshock 2 Remastered today.
Everything is working well except the game is rather jittery/low fps. On my virtual desktop and FPSVR displays I have 120fps but on monitor it shows only about 30-50 fps, and that’s what it feels like in-game in the headset too. Jittery movement especially when turning around.
And I can’t see why, when my PC is a 4080/i7-13700f that runs the flatscreen version at 500ish fps – this should be a cakewalk! Maybe I’m just doing some rookie mistake here? Any advice would be welcome!
No. For dx12 , the games run only in zadaptive and znormal. But for me or g3d work great , same bioshock , or are too better play in zadaptive!
So i couldnt find borderlands 2 or bioshock profiles to play in vr. Saw no profiles, went looking for profiles and realized they were deleted. So i started playing in cinema mode..full vr not being an option…at first. But after about 5 minutes of playing each game, the full vr option did become available…is vorpx super smart, able to detect now? or did it just find the profiles somehow after all?
I found profiles again with the new beta. Awesome times again with Bioshock 1&2. They seem to play very well with DirectVR scan, I love that tech!
I am having trouble with Duke Nukem Forever though, I can’t seem to move either with keyboard, touch controls, or even keyboard. Any ideas on that one? Thanks
I was thinking of purchasing Vorpx after years of people saying stay away from it….I was wanting to play Bioshock Collection in VR.
I just heard that Bioshock games cant be played anymore due to the companies complaining ,like GTA5 and RDR2. Is this correct? Is there a work around to play Bioshock games if i downloaded a certain version?
If this is so and companies are closing it down……Whats to stop more companies closing them down and Vorpx to become useless?
Ye ive not changed anything..Im sticking to Steam VR for everything.
But as i say i still get the OpenXR error whe nrunning a majority of the games.
I downgraded to the version that runs Bioshock 1 and 2 and i select them but that error appears. The game boots up on desktop and i can see that its injected Vorpx but then that error appears and it doesnt boot up in headset.
Contrary to Valve’s announcement two years ago or so their OpenXR implementation isn’t spec complete in any way. It entirely lacks 32bit support (would be necessary for older games like Bioshock), and also has a spec breaking issue where they swap the behavior of two functions used to initialize a frame, which breaks the purpose of splitting the OpenXR frame init into two functions and makes their OpenXR implementation pretty much useless in more complex multithreaded scenarios.
Long story short: stick to SteamVR. There is no point in using Valve’s OpenXR. It’s broken without hope of getting fixed (they have been made aware of both issues mentioned above by several people for years) and basically just a wrapper to SteamVR anyway.
Hi
After reinstalling windows to get the latest Vorpx working as i had issues…I now have issues when running the 21.3.2 version to play bioshock and other titles. Some games work fine like MK11/Amnesia and Dead Souls 3…..But the games i wanted to play(Bioshock 1 and 2) i get a starnge startup error.
I have a Valve Index with Steam VR running and selected in Vorpx. I inject the profile and i get this error…..
OpenXR instance creation failed
This is a severe error.Make sure that OpenXR is working correctly on your PC or switch to a different VR API in the Vorpx config app
The game seems to appear on desktop and i can see that vorpx has been injected but then that error appears shortly after game boots…and Steam VR doesnt boot the game at all.
Ive tried different settings in config…but as i say some games boot, most dont.
All drivers up to date and Steam VR games running fine.
Anyone help? Kinda frustrated at this as ive been at it for about 5 hours trying to fix this. Again its strange that some games boot fine but the ones i downgraded for dont.

Long story shot, some big editor contacted VR modders to make their franchises unplayable in VR.
So now, the franchises GTA, Red Dead Redemption, Borderlands and Bioshock are unplayable in any popular VR mod, not just VorpX.
Could be more franchises, i dont know the full list.
if this is real is a very bad news,
