In reply to: What is VorpX?

Can anyone explain to me what exactly VorpX is supposed to do?

I have a Vive and was researching ways to play Resident Evil 7 in VR and read about VorpX. I configured it as best as I could figure and ran Resident Evil while in VR. The screen was all messed up and none of my input controls like mouse or controllers would do anything and I had to force quit it via task manager.

I did manage to get Diablo 3 to work and it was kind of cool. Apparently, it just plays games in theatre mode like Steam does?

As far as 3D, VR itself is 3D isn’t it? Is the app design to take a 2D first person game and somehow make it 3D with head tracking?

Lastly, why does VorpX configuration pop up and mess up the display when I run an already VR gamme such as Space Pirate Trainer?

Resident Evil 7 isnt on the list of supported games. See the Support section here. Games need a preconfigured “profile” to work. Best thing to do is start with one of the games listed in the supported games list.
What VORPX does to varying degrees for different games is:
    1) will allow you to play the game in the headset
    2) will incorporate headtracking
    3) will render the game in 3D

Using these and other tools in the software (from the in game configuration (i.e. “delete” button).. you can take existing games and turn them into VR type experiences to varying degrees. There’s a pretty good list of games that have been configured perfectly and play in VR just as well as the ones you are buying for your VIVE.

    Hi,

Each game I’ve tried so far crashes after about 30-60 minutes playtime (e.g. Diablo 3). Shortly before those crashes the VR world begins to … “flashing” (My steam VR background fades in and out quickly). This starts very gentle and gets worse within next 1-2 minutes. In the end the VR world crashes (black screen), but the games still runs fine (on my monitor).

Regular Steam VR games and Steam’s cinema mode running just fine. I already tried to lower game settings while using vorpx and set vorpx’s ingame settings to “low” (no 3D emulation, black background, etc.). It didn’t even increase the playtime before it crashes.

Before asking: Yes, I went through the FAQ already (I’ve disabled antivirus, checked further programs, avoided game mods/injections and no nvidia 3D-ish configs activated).

So, does someone have a hint on how I can solve this annoying behaviour?

    Thank you in advance.

Short answer: there is no profile for the game in vorpX, so vorpX doesn’t even try to enable 3D.

Long answer: while from a user’s perspective it’s mainly 3D/no 3D, from vorpX’s (or any 3d drivers’s) perspective the way 3D can be done varies heavily from game to game, so no method exists for a global 3D/no 3D option that automatically works for everything.

And the situation in this regard gets worse the more complex 3D graphics get, hence not even nVidia is able to provide Geometry 3D profiles for every DirectX 11 game anymore these days.

There is a Psychonauts profile though in vorpX. Provided Brütal Legend is indeed based on the same graphics engine, in your specific example chances aren’t too bad that you will be able to use that as a base for a semi-decent Brütal Legend profile (minus potential shader/shadow fixes that almost certainly always are game specific).

Thanks Ralf, understood. Nice job on the new vorpx btw, the color and sharpening is great. Diablo 3 in vorpx is looking great.

Hi. The only way i got it to work is by turning on the vorpx desktop viewer and then going on diablo. The reason the other way doesn’t work is because battle.net is strict about people trying to intercept their video output from the game.

I also noticed that the service provided by vorpx(Except the desktop viewer) is provided by steam for free. All you have to do is add a non steam game to the steam library then go to its properties then select the vr theater option. Once ur ready to play, turn steam vr on and you will be in a movie theater playing the game.

Thank you for answering. I tried that and it didn’t work. TriDef worked.

I have to wonder why this game is still on the supported list. One can hardly call that supported. Neither from a technical standpoint nor help from the developer.

vorpx won’t hook into Diablo 3 and I have no clue why or how I to troubleshoot it.

the more games I try with vorpx the more I regret buying it 🙁

    could anyone help please?

Only games that have a profile for stereoscopy are rendered in 3D. Quake has one IIRC.

For Starcraft 2 making a copy of the Diablo III profile in the vorpX config app and assigning the Starcraft 2 main .exe to it might be worth a try. That’s just a guess based on both games being from Blizzard though and thus maybe using the same graphics engine. No guarantee that it will do anything.

OK, made a little bit of progress. Super confusing, not 100% sure on what I’m doing, however, am getting closer in baby steps on this.

So I downloaded my copy of Thief II, The Metal Age. I’ve managed to get the menu screen going in my headset. However, the mouse and keyboard (HTC Vive controllers didn’t work at all) were not working in the game. The left click seemed to do nothing at all, while right clicking seemed to only work on my left monitor. The screen in my headset was beautiful and clear as it is on my monitor, but gargantuan and off to the left. None of the hotkeys to change those settings worked either.

But how I got to this little bit of progression was, starting VorpX, then running SteamVR, then running the game. After importing Thief 2, The Metal Age from the configure settings. Where I was going wrong when I read Ralf’s instructions on my other post was I was leaving the configure screen up and then running the VorpX picture viewer running. I thought that was what made VorpX work. Running the picture viewer.

So still haven’t gotten any game to run, but it’s a step in the right direction, hopefully some of this helps.

I’m with you. While I’ve gotten VorpX to start, and I can get the Desktop viewer to launch, I can’t get it to launch/attach for any game. All I get is the SteamVR home area (“This is REAL” with my Roomspace Grid) and that’s it. I’ve even disabled my second monitor while trying to run it in case that was causing issues as there’s no support for dual monitors.

Tried using it with Diablo 3 and if VorpX is running at all then Diablo 3 locks up when I hit “Play” in the battle.net launcher. Also as a shot in the dark I tried running it with other games like ARK and no go there. Pretty lost and confused as hitting “Start VorpX” as the instructions doesn’t seem to do anything.
