How are pancake games looking in cinema modes, virtual desktop, perceived resolution, etc. with the G2?

Rahul, geometry isn’t the main issue, it the rasterization.

Yes, Geometry 3D renders the game twice, once for each eye, so you’ll need more than twice the GPU horsepower if you want some overhead. I’d recommend a 2080ti or better.

While the G2 is 4K (2K per eye) you can set the rendering resolution within the game itself to whatever you like and the Reverb looks quite good running in half resolution mode from everything I’ve read.

Control is a demanding title even with DLSS, so be prepared play around with settings or settle for Z3D. There’s also the option to use Virtual Desktop with ReShade’s “SuperDepth 3D” shader.

The quality of depth map based Z3D depends on the title, really. Some titles barely look 3D at all while others are great. The Evil Within is fantastic using Tridef’s Power 3D.

General rule of thumb for G3D is twice the GPU processing power and add 10% for VorpX.

Probably a long shot, but does anyone know if it’s possible to for VorpX to “see” Virtual Desktop as a standard SBS 3DTV or whatever, so VD can handle the resizing, distance, etc, the same way it works with Tridef and ReShade?

I wasn’t apologizing, lol. I didn’t know there was already a vertical option!

Ovo’s comment was unfairly pointed and provocative, but comes from a place of frustration. The greater point, I think, in the same way that some people sit up front at the theater, while others prefer the back, or somewhere in between, is that’s it’s normal for these sorts of preferences to carry over into virtual space, and carefully considered options can be a net positive for everyone.

On the developer end I’m sure it seems like (and often is) a never ending barrage of feature creep, many of which don’t make sense. Obviously, there needs to be curation for a variety of reasons. Retroarch did a good job solving this dilemma by hiding advanced features from more casual users after MUCH push back from the developers. Thank you for your time and hard work!

My mistake. I was unaware. Maybe he is, too.

I would welcome a vertical option, but it wouldn’t be as good as it sounds. You aren’t actually rotating the HMD screen in real space so resolution gets reduced significantly. Also, vertical FOV isn’t as good. If you compensate for this by zooming in and extending the viewing area above and below the vertical cut off points you’re forced to constantly move your head up and down to take in any important information contained outside the border. I think it could work for some games like vertical shmups.

    Thanks for the consideration, Ralf.

Yes, Smoils, wanting to play video games on a huge theatre screen, ala the already proven and popular Virtual Desktop style is the same thing as microscopic eye surgery you snide smartass.

I’d be more than content with a void and the already implemented backlighting. An actual theatre would be great, but what makes PC gaming great is options. What’s truly compelling about VR is the ability to present things that don’t, or can’t, exist.

Great to hear VorpX meets my criteria for an immersive experience, albeit a home theatre one. I hope my previous observation didn’t come off as ignorant, I don’t have VorpX or a HMD as I’m waiting on Reverb G2. I have owned a Rift and the negatives, low resolution combined with limited FOV and poor performance in Virtual Desktop, outweighed the positives.

I’m thrilled to see any 3D support for PC games at all and appreciate it. While 3D gaming is generally doable in VR, the big theatre experience isn’t great.

Virtual Desktop lacks native support for 3D and suffers performance wise. You can use it in conjunction with a SBS shader in Reshade, but it’s limited to Z3D. Tridef is an option for older games, and even some newer ones, but the company is out of business and Ignition apparently no longer works with Steam. My understanding is similar programs focused on desktop or movies perform the same or worse when it comes to games.

HelixVison no longer works with 3000 series cards and current drivers as Nvidia’s removed 3D Vision, limiting us to 2000 cards and older drivers unless they find a work around or develop a new framework.

As it stands, VorpX would be the most promising all around option for 3D theatre gaming provided the user could set the scale and distance as described in the original post. A 20 foot screen simply doesn’t provide the same feeling of awe and immersion as a 300 foot one.

This is a “pick your poison” scenario, as it keeps conversion artifacts to a minimum at the cost of the 3D effect. Which leads one to wonder, what’s the point of 3D conversion to begin with? Please, let us pick our poison. I prefer Tridef and 3D Vision style ghosting over flattening any day, but the choice should be up to the user here.

    Hello,

I’m also interested in this feature. I find standard games (2D or 3D) on an impossibly huge theatre screen more enticing than VR itself. This is actually the main reason I ordered a Reverb G2.

Filling FOV is possible with almost any standard display at the correct viewing distance, but the absolutely incredible sense of immersion only comes with proper scale and distance.

I can achieve this effect with my projector sitting about 12 feet away from a 165” screen; any smaller and closer (with the same FOV) just feels like a big screen. As great as this is, it doesn’t compare to Virtual Desktop, but performance is lacking.

Please consider adding more display options for us theatre aficionados. As the quality of HMD’s improves our numbers will only increase.
