VorpViverParticipant
Thanks for your video.
I did my own tests** now (again a good year later) and as a result going to play the upcoming Episode 4 of The Long Dark in VR and see how far I get.
(Make sure you have the newest GPU drivers or you ll get funny problems with missing textures on your right eye.)
All problems have an expectable solution:– The indoor depth perception or sizes-issue is ok with some tweaks. Dont go for the the full VR mode but the “Immersive Screen”, use FOV 85, and use the vorpX-TLD-online-profile from the user “Owain Virgin”. With that profile I had the best body height and indoor size impression, but other profiles are close to it as well.
– Cutscenes can be seen on both eyes very normal when you switch the 3D/VR mode of vorpX from “3D geometry” to “z-normal” or alike* (quickly possible ingame).
– Aiming weapons and stuff is easy when you switch the 3D/VR mode of vorpX from “3D geometry” to ”z-normal” or alike* OR
– aim with one eye closed and practise where to aim first. In the case of the hunting rifle the user vorpX-profile from “Owain Virgin” gave such a good reference spot on the weapon I could one-shot a deer on the very first attempt in “3D geometry” VR mode, but I expect some trouble/frustration with other weapons.**I tested HTC Vive Pro and HP reverb G2 and will go with the first for the much better black values. OLED displays give the impression of black empty space in front of you, whereas LCD displays brake that illusion with a greyish something in front of your eyes (despite being shaper). With a GTX 1080 (without Ti; Ryzen 5 3600) I run the game with 2560×1444, less is not good enough for me when it comes to distance.
* The only real VR mode with depth perception is “3D geometry” (in The Long Dark). “z-normal” and “z-adaptive” create some 3D-effects in menu- and some object-interactions only but not for the landscape in rooms. They are almost the same as none VR (at least I do not see a difference): you will end up with a big cinema-like screen so close to you, you almost cannot see the edge. Because of the missing depth it strains the eyes (trying to see depth in the distance) but it makes cutscenes and weapon aiming as normal as on a big TV / cinema screen. (Via the delete-key one can switch the mode very quickly ingame.)

VorpViverParticipantJust an update:
Its now working even better with the Valve Index (I guess Vive Pro too). I play it in VR only. Yet VR means: you do feel more lonely and abandoned on this empty planet…
There is still a small community keeping it alive with a recently created huge user-made campaign and a recent realism overhaul mod (very nice!, see steam workshop).
Bare in mind:
– It uses directx9, meaning its not working with oculus since oculus does not support it anymore.
– The game is very special and not everyone taste. But I really like it. Its a “Mark Watney survives on Mars” simulation with realistic but sometimes clunky mechanics.
– It requires time to learn the controls/ the concept before you should use it in vorpxVorpViverParticipantBefore you jump on “Take on Mars”:

VorpViverParticipantProblem solved. After I finally reinstalled my OS everything works nice and as expected. Must have been an OS or treiber / dll problem.
With realism overhaul and the Valve Index Take on Mars is just beautiful.

VorpViverParticipantThx. I did a longer test session.
Apart from the window-mode-advice I had done everything before (even restore settings). But did it again – with no effect. The Long Dark and Arma 3 are running well – as in the past and without any addressed issues (The long dark looks even better though!).
Since the problem occurs with Arma 2 and Take on Mars only, I thought its an issue with the game profile. But I am running out of ideas. It might be a freak-problem.
If there are not any ideas left, I ll wait until I set up my tribble boot (reinstall OS in one or two month time) and see if it occurs on the new OS too. Best
VorpViverParticipantThx for testing it. It means its just an issue with my machine.
Launching it a second time, I already did, with no effect. I ruled out other possible reasons: with and without Batteleye, or with just Arma II (without operation Arrowhead). And I deinstalled openVR from SteamVR. As mentioned in the original post: other games run as expected – nothing unusual with vorpx. I downloaded a custom Arma II profile to cross check – again, no effect.
On the computer screen I clearly see both images (left and right eye, overlapped but shifted a bit) and the vorpx logo. There is proper game-sound. The cursor and picture follow the HMD tracking. Its working, but with 10fps only!, which is unusual and why I set the graphics very low (actually not necessary: 1080 without ti). I get better frame rates (above 40, but not as good as in the past). I cannot even access the VR vorpx menu. Everything is dead inside the Vive (but sound).
Sounds like the next step would be de/reinstalling vorpx?
Arma II is not the actual target though. I used that profile many times successfully (‘create based on’) for Take on Mars (yes, not officially supported, but worked for me all the time). Now (a year later) I wanted to check and in case update my published instructions. But Take on Mars shows the same behaviour, that I could not solve. That’s why I checked the original profile: Arma II and ended up here.
Could it be a directX issue? Take on Mars runs on 9. Arma II though is fairly modern and should not make trouble.
Its not super important but if there are some ideas left, what to check and to do, I had welcome and appreciate it. Best!
VorpViverParticipantAnd I tried a vorpx desktop short: not successful either.
VorpViverParticipantI agree!
The official list seems outdated. On the other hand the demand seems not too high. I just made this experience with my “Take on Mars”-posts on Steam and here. No response at all despite the many request for a solution before. Kind of strange, yet a good reason to start such a list – to spread the good news and have a central hub.
So, here I contribute: Take on Mars runs with vorpX in the Vive (probably not in the Rift). For current details go to: https://www.vorpx.com/forums/topic/take-on-mars-runs-in-vorpx/
VorpViverParticipantAdditional tip when TKOM does not start directly into vorpX from your steam account …
… start TKOM with a custom made desktop short cut:
>right click on the vorpx icon in the quickstart menu
>choose create “desktop short cut”
>navigate to your TKOM.exe in the steam folder
>start TKOM with that short cut (while vorpx is running)VorpViverParticipantI am afraid that will not work since Take On Mars (TKOM) runs on the Carrier Command engine by Bohemia which is different from the Arma engines. A quick test based on the the Arma2 profile did not work in my case (only the horizon was working).
I remember a Dev stating in a steam discussion that they will definitely not support Oculus/facebook because Oculus does not support DirectX9, which TKOM needs. There was no clear answer for the Vive. If there will be VR support for TKOM at all, we should expect it in the far future only. So, Vorpx is our only chance. I could do some tests over Xmas.
(The game itself has finally a full Mark-Watney/”The Martian” campaign, that is very good and challenging! If you are a fan of the book or movie you should consider this game.)
