One of my goto games is the original Crysis. 2 and 3 work well also, but I love traversing the jungle in the original and the vehicles work great too. Dead Island played good too. Right now I’m experimenting with Dying Light. Too bad nobody created an Alien Isolation type VR mod to enhance the experimental VR that’s already in the game.

No, you did not listen and are still not listening, 3D VISION DOES NOT SATURATE A THREAD NEEDING TO OFFLOAD WORKLOAD ONTO ANOTHER THREAD, 3D VISION LIMITS THE NUMBER OF PHYSICAL CORES AVAILABLE TO THREE, HENCE THE NAME OF THE PROBLEM “3 CORE BUG”.

If it were simply a case of saturating a thread / core then the problem would be resolved by using a CPU of greater core count, i.e. 8700k, 9900k. There are many DX11 titles that have decent multi-threaded support, i.e. Watch Dogs 2, i.e. Crysis 2/3 just to name a few. If you try to play THOSE titles in 3D Vision THERE ARE ONLY THREE CORES IN USE.

I have no reason to defend nVidia, but imagine the following simplified scenario: a CPU with two cores and a game using two threads, one for rendering, one for physics. In mono both threads each fully utilize ‘their’ core, overall CPU usage 100%. Now, again for the sake of simplicity, let’s say stereo rendering doubles the CPU workload of the render thread, causing the framerate to drop to half purely due to the higher CPU workload. The first thread (rendering) would still fully utilize its core, but the second thread (physics) now would only have to utilize 50% of its core since only half the frames need physics calculated compared to before. Result: instead of 100% CPU usage mono you get 75% CPU usage with stereo.

No mysterious ‘3 core bug’ anywhere, everything working as expected. The ‘culprit’ is the added stereo workload on the render thread, as simple as that. The numbers will differ in a real world example and vary from game to game, but I hope you get the idea.

If this were the case of a thread responsible for rendering frames being saturated and needing to offload some of it’s workload onto another thread then we would see this problem running the game in 2D at 120 FPS but this isn’t the case with 3D Vision. Example, say I run GTA 5, Prey or Rise of the Tomb Raider in a CPU intensive area (DX11) @ 120 FPS in 2D, everything maxed, at 2560×1440 with 2080 Ti and 8700k @ 5.1 GHz no problem, but 3D performance is, it’s like 1/3rd, an abysmal 40 FPS, or 80 FPS 2D. Even DX11 has the ability to use more than 4 cores / 8 threads for rendering, i.e. Crysis 2 / 3 or Watchdogs 2 for example, which sees even distribution of workload across CPU’s of greater core count. 3D Vision actually limits the game to only being able to run on 3 physical cores for some odd reason, so an 8700k would yield 0% performance advantage over 7700k and even 7700k would be down a core trying to process any game. I get and appreciate your logic that rendering would actually decrease the CPU load (because physics being done on a single thread would have reduced workload) but that’s not what I’m describing, 3D Vision limits the number of available physical cores to 3 cores for some odd reason, the technical nature of which escapes me right now. There is around a 50% drop in performance due to 3 core bug. For example, I can run a game @ 120 FPS with full load on the GPU in 2D but because 3 core bug limits the number of physical cores available to 3 in 3D those 3 cores may be incapable of rendering the game at 120 FPS (even the the effect renders @ 60 FPS there are still 120 frames being created simultaneously, one for each eye). Usually a CPU demanding title that I can run at 120 FPS avg with full / near full usage on the GPU will only run at 40 FPS, a performance drop of 40 FPS 2D.

The game «MechWarrior Online» has support for the TrackIR Protocol, which allows us to turn head in the cockpit. However, to transmit data about turns and movement of the VR-headset, we must use additional software, such as «OpenTrack», where the data source is specified as «Oculus Rift runtime» or «Valve SteamVR». Are there plans to add support for the TrackIR Protocol to «vorpX» so that there is no need to use additional software?

I would like also to see a native profile created in «vorpX» for «MechWarrior Online». Now, the profile for this game has to be created on the basis of «Crysis 2» or «Crysis 3», but they are not optimal for «MechWarrior Online». Don’t forget «MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries».

I wanted to add, the reason for my previous post trying to encourage you to keep the program isnt just because it does work when you find the rights settings.. but ive put it thru absurd scearios and the part that always works is vorpx.

I played Dark Souls 3 with a First person cheatengine mod with Geometry3d.

I played Mass Effect Andromeda with a first person mod with vorpx and geometry 3d.

I am currently in a first person mod playthru, with vorpx, in Sekiro.

This program can make games play in a way you never thought possible, coupled with the proper mods and stuff. Sekiro in first person VR is intense and amazing, Mass effect gets a bad rap but man, just gameplay wise in first person with that games insane combat system was an absolute blast.

I didnt mean to sound demeaning toward you in the previous post, i apologize, i just wanted to emphasize what this program CAN DO when you just work with it a little bit.. its totally up to you to ask for a refund, im not sure of those policies and like i said, i have nothing to do with the staff or company or anything, just a user… but this program has changed games i never thought would be fun to return to (like deus ex) or games into entirely new experiences like Sekiro modded out.

If you already got your refund and are done with it, all good.. just wanted you to know, this program has potential for incredible gaming experiences if youre willing to put the time into getting your settings right.. it sucks that the settings arent an easy across the board thing, but, it really just depends on each computer and their setup and preferences for how they want to play… what may seem like too complicated of options right now for you are going to be exactly the options you want once you learn the program a little bit. My best bet would maybe look around youtube for vorpx tutorials to maybe get your feet wet on the fundamental stuff..

but really man.. it made mass effect andromeda not suck. :P hooray for vorpx, they saved the mass effect franchise for me :) lol

You purchased a product that requires some ‘work’ from the user because it is doing something that was simply never intended – turning 2d games into VR experiences. Your computer, resolution, game settings and vorpx settings ALL play into this.

the games you have complained about i have made run very well and enjoyed even on an old card, im using a gtx 780.

I am not the creator of vorpx… but as a long time user, i can tell you that your complaints are 100% rectifieable, by you, if youre willing to put the time in and just fiddle with settings for a few minutes. Its literally impossible to make a perfect profile for every PC and headset – you need to use your game settings and the vorpx in game menu to get the games looking as theyre ‘supposed to’, unless theyre one of the directVR officially scanned games. Crysis not launching is 99% chance a driver issue or something and not vorpx’s fault. If you want to totally refresh your drivers and see if that rectifies your launching problems, there is a program called DDU, google it, itll basically reset all your drivers/directx info and set you up with a ‘fresh’ graphics card and that may fix your crysis problem… i really doubt its related to vorpx unless something else is fundamentally broken in your system

vorpX 20.1.1 has been released.

This is a medium sized maintenance release, mainly aimed at improving/updating existing profiles and addressing a few issues that have been reported recently. On top of that Immersive Screen and Cinema play styles can now be configured for comfortable reclined gaming and a couple of smaller improvements have been implemented. The release also comes with three new game profiles.

As a new service some short descriptions of the games that got profiles added. Let me know if you consider that useful or unnecessary fluff.

Journey

This is an enhanced version of the PS3/4 masterpiece from 2013 that finally was released for PC a few months ago. Find your way through a barren desert in search for a mysterious mountain on the horizon. A unique game with a whopping Metacritic score of 92 for its original release that you will find in many top lists of the best games ever created. More captivating than ever in 3D with vorpX’s Immersive Screen Mode.

A Hat in Time

Feeling grumpy today? This is for you then. A cute 3D-platformer that will put a smile on your face immediately. Who needs Mario when you can have A Hat in Time? Defaults to Immersive Screen Mode, but if you have the stomach, you might also want to try FullVR, vorpX takes care of adjusting the FOV etc.

Little Nightmares

A Steam surprise hit from roughly a year ago. Guide a little girl in a yellow raincoat through her little nightmares in this 2.5D platformer. If you haven’t tried that already, you will be surprised how much fun games like this can be on a huge (virtual) 3D screen. A must for everyone who likes games like Limbo or Inside even a little bit.

Mmm, last time I checked X3 it was clearly 3D. In a large scale space sim you will have to fly fairly close to a station though to notice much of a 3D effect. Just like in reality things hundreds of meters away don’t really have any parallax. If it was any different, everything would look like a miniature world.

From the games on your list personally I would recommend Dead Space, Jedi Knight II, Prey 2017 (must play if you like Deus Ex & Co., you may want to stick to Z3D though), Crysis, Black Mesa, Fallout New Vegas, Left4Dead 2. Most of the others aren’t even officially supported, so I can’t comment on them.

Black Mesa, Fallout New Vegas, Left4Dead 2 have the best possible DirectVR support imaginable, even allowing a little bit of roomscale. Jedi Knight II has DirectVR rotaional tracking and FOV, Crysis and Prey 2017 have DirectVR FOV. All seven should be playable pretty much without tweaking except for adjusting resolution and image quality to your liking.

I tried playing Crysis Warhead but could barely stay in my HMD for more than a minute. It felt like the IPD was way off and I could feel the muscles in my eyes straining (it took a while to recover afterwards). I also noticed it in HL2 when I briefly tried it, but it wasn’t as intense. I don’t have this problem in any VR title or VR mod (doom3bfg vr mod for example).

I’m using a Rift-S. My measured IPD is ~63 and I feel I fit perfectly in this HMD. I have tried adjusting the digital IPD in Oculus and even went to both extremes but it made no difference.

In-game I played with 3d geometry scaling and even disabled it, but I could still feel the pain. I also noticed I couldn’t focus on a lot of text (when looking at a gun on the floor a 3d popup displays with text) without closing one eye. It was doubled.

Could there be something wrong in the IPD translation? I looked online and it would seem that VorpX did have a manual IPD setting, but it was removed and now works directly with the value in Oculus (currently at its default 63.5). Is there an override or any way to add an offset, assuming this problem is IPD related?

I think I found the problem: you either have to start the game from the Galaxy app or launch Crysis.exe directly, both should work fine. Using the ‘Launch Crysis’ shortcut created by GOG however does show the symptoms you describe.

Looks as if the autoexec isn’t executed when GOG’s CrysisLauncher.exe is used, which would also explain why the FOV can’t even be set from the console in that case. Without running the autoexec on start the console remains in restricted mode.

You can either:

Add ‘-dx9’ (without quotes) to the command line in Galaxy (More > Settings > Custom Settings) like suggested by vorpX and then start the game from Galaxy as usual.

Or:

Create a shortcut to ‘[Your Crysis Folder]\Bin32\Crysis.exe’ directly and add ‘-dx9’ (without quotes) to the target field.

The default profile is meant to set the fov through game settings, only that it doesn’t seem to be applied anywhere. The -20/+20 adjustments don’t alter anything either. Using the default settings from the profile I can Image Zoom to 0.60 which seems to be where the fov should be (there abouts), but the screen is too far away.

I can’t see cl_fov anywhere in the vorpx modified ‘game.cfg’ file or anywhere else.

That’s not quite as important anymore for modern games as it used to be. Most games these days use low latency mouse input with almost as little latency as memory scanner head tracking. The memory scanner is still quite a bit better for other reasons, but the advantage isn’t as huge with most newer games.
