Topic: VorpX barely working, hooks up only on some games!
in forum Technical Support
UnderrecoverParticipantI face a problem and I run out of options of what could be the issue of games not running in VorpX. Games that worked was Half-Life 2, Portal, Fallout 3, and Fallout Las Vegas. Checking on other people facing similar issues I read all previous options of what could I do about it and I did all these steps. Reinstall VorpX, disable and uninstall AV program, disable any overlays that could influence the VorpX to hook up to the game, check if there is any unnecessary DLL, checking if the game is running in DX11 not DX12, trying to change resolutions for games, uninstall games and install again, run games and VorpX as admin, use alternative hooking method. All the games I checked are compatible with VorpX and should work without hassle and they are bought and I own them. At this point, I really can’t find a solution to what the issue could be and what could make it work. If there are any smart guys out there, please help me to solve this issue because I am hanging on to this for weeks without any progress. I know VorpX working and its hooking on to games, but it dose not for most of the compatible games that should work.

vintagerParticipantOkay, I can confirm FC4 doesn’t work out of the box.
I’m trying to play it on WMR (Samsung Odyssey+), and I was unfortunate enough to buy the game on Steam, not knowing it required Ubisoft Connect–which means it has to fire up both clients at the start. Maybe that’s part of the problem.
Anyway, I can only get into the main menu by using the old trick from this forum: pause the Watcher, start the game, wait for the loading screen, resume the Watcher. However, after that, the picture appears blurry as sh*t, zoomed (I can’t see the HUD), and there’s no G3D. It’s absolutely flat.
All the other games I play with Vorpx hook perfectly (NFS Rivals, NFS Shift 2, Half-Life 2, Rage with the unofficial profile, albeit the latter, being OpenGL, doesn’t have G3D either). I’ve tried shutting down all the non-essential Windows processes–including the antivirus–rebooting the PC, reinstalling the game and Vorpx itself etc. etc. etc.
Another thing I’ve noticed is that Vorpx adds the following element to the game’s profile:
<CustomQuality>
<quality ResolutionX=”1280″ ResolutionY=”720″ OtherQuality=”low” EnvironmentQuality=”low” AntiPortalQuality=”default” PortalQuality=”default” PostFxQuality=”low” TextureQuality=”low” WaterQuality=”low” DepthPassQuality=”low” VegetationQuality=”low” TerrainQuality=”low” GeometryQuality=”low” LightingQuality=”high” ShadowQuality=”low” ShadowCinematicQuality=”low” EditorQuality=”default” Hdr=”1″ HdrFP32=”0″ ReflectionHdr=”1″ EnableVertexBinding=”1″ id=”custom”/>
</CustomQuality>Would really appreciate some support here!

blackbassParticipantHi!
First of all, thanks for this amazing feature; I bought VorpX 4 months ago to replay Half Life saga in VR and finally enjoy Half-Life Alyx (a masterpiece) and after I found that Half Life in VR was a little nauseating, I tried to play it on my LG 3D Screen and… it was way beyond expectation!
I think I will play more and more games that way, since it so immersive and relaxing at the same time!
This post is to understand better how this mode works to get the best from it, since I recently got a new 4k HDR 3D tv from LG (so bad that they stopped making them) so I’d like to know how to setup in game resolution to get the best performances.
Since at the TV is sent an SBS image, If i set the game to 4k VORPX will render 2 times a 4k scene (overkilling my Vega 64 graphic card) or it will render a total 4k scene?
Is there any tweak or hint to get the best from this mode?
Thanks very much for your support!Aug 23, 2020 at 10:07am #196703In reply to: Black Mesa – Zoomed In/Giant Hands
steph12Participanttry to create a custom.cfg file in \half-life 2\hl2\cfg\ i dont remember the exact location.
look here for tweaks http://fr33man.altervista.org/HL2guida/HL2_7.htm
you can try to tweak fov_viewmodel if for some reason directVR dont fully work for you, when i played black mesa months ago, except for flickering weapons, i didnt have giants hands/weapons.
Aug 23, 2020 at 12:30am #196689In reply to: Black Mesa – Zoomed In/Giant Hands
HelloJoeParticipantYep. Basically DirectVR is already cache. I re-ran it just to be sure and it gives the same result. Note, everything else works fine just the hands give the impression that everything is zoomed in… When looking at someone play Half-Life 2 using Vorpx you can see the hands in HL2 are extended to be much longer so the gun isnt in your face. I just want to know if this is just something you have to put up with or is there a fix.

in forum Game Hints and Settings
HelloJoeParticipantAm I doing something wrong or is this how it is supposed to be? Basically, in Black Mesa the background is ok but the foreground is covered by the character’s large hands and gun. As if it is zoomed in. In Half-life 2 this is fine because they seem to extend the arm distance out further. Is there a fix to this? Is there a thorough setup guide somewhere to Black mesa?
Thank you,

RalfKeymasterNever heard of Project Lambda, but Half-Life 2 Update should work. At least it did when I tried it a year ago or so. Let me know if it doesn’t anymore.
Jun 4, 2020 at 3:29am #195070In reply to: Vorpx with the new pimax 8k+/8kx
mariametroParticipantI’m using vorpx with the 8K+. It works really well.
I upgraded to the Pimax after using the rift-s but there was a massive gap between me using the two headsets so any impressions I have over image quality is maybe not the best. FOV is obviously better, colour production maybe the same or maybe the smallest bit not as good as the Rift-S.
I’ve only really gotten vorpx to work at the ‘normal’ or ‘small’ fov on the pimax, but only because I deliberately stuck with the default settings and couldn’t be bothered drilling much deeper into things to get that extra percent of FOV (which is typically distorted anyway) on games that really aren’t optimised for VR. As others have pointed out, the ‘small’ setting is still wider than quite a few HMDa already.
Oddly, I found vorpx with pimax needs less hand holding in setup for certain games than the Rift-S. Half-life 2 was a bit of a nightmare under the rift-s. There was a convoluted start-up procedure I had to maintain otherwise it would CTD. On first successful launch of HL2 under the rift-s, I also had to do a directVR scan and dial in some settings. Via the pimax, it launches no problem and works right out of the box. Maybe there was push-pull issue previously with oculus home and steamVR wrestling for control.
The only other thing I would say is to run games at full-res (or beyond for super-sampling) to get the most out of the pimax displays can be a bit heavy on performance in G3D. Frame rate and FOV is more important to me than image fidelity, so I’m happy to take a small hit on resolution to maintain those two other things. As such, I also found oculus’s asynchronous motion smoothing to be cleaner than what is used by steamvr/Pimax. I noticed this the most when playing a heavily modded fallout NV.
Finally, if vorpx is your main port of call for your HMD, I would recommend the deluxe audio strap mod for the pimax. It makes quickly getting in and out of the headset (or otherwise peaking at real world surroundings) for misc tasks (like finding your keyboard/mouse/gamepad or misc windows tasks) easier and is a nice quality of life improvement.
In summation, I’m very happy with the pimax and don’t really see myself going back to the rift-s (which I still think is a very good bit of equipment).

HelloJoeParticipantCan someone explain to me why this happens?
In Half-Life 2, I can use my x360 gamepad to control the Vorpx settings menu, i.e. use thumbstick for Edgepeek & open vorpx menu etc..
In Black Mesa, I can play the game with the gamepad but the Vorpx menu doesn’t recognize my controller inputs. I have to use the keyboard to open Vorpx menu, mouse wheel for edgepeak etc.. I just want to use my gamepad.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
Apr 10, 2020 at 5:26pm #193762In reply to: Did anyone play Half-Life Alyx yet?
DestroyParticipantBoneworks is the better VR Half-Life to me. With all its glitches and buggy physics it felt a lot more immersive to me. I couldn’t stop playing it, where Half-Life feels like a drag, playing for 30-60 minutes each day but feel no need to play longer. I think it’s way overrated.
I feel the same. Based on feedback, I bought Boneworks instead. Much better entertainment value. Alyx is won and done, Boneworks is way more open ended.
Maybe when the ‘Gold’ Alyx pack is completed and on sale, I’ll get it.

zeveralParticipantArs has a decent vr hw guide: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2020/03/the-ultimate-half-life-vr-hardware-guide-from-frugal-to-fantastic/
I’ve been using an Odyssey+ and my only complaint is the WMR portal is stupid and annoying. If I had to pick something new and money was no object, it’d be the Index, mostly because it has the least amount of overhead required to use (you need steamvr to use just about any vr program these days anyway).
Mar 24, 2020 at 8:24pm #193406In reply to: Did anyone play Half-Life Alyx yet?
slydog43ParticipantI’m so glad you posted this ralf. I have play 2 or 3 hours so far of Alyx and have enjoyed it mostly. I started out playing on a brand new Index that I was lucky enough to pick up when it went on sale last time, but I really hate the controllers. I really don’t like how to grab and crush things with force, I really prefer the Oculus Touch controller and their grab button. I also hate the touch pad area on the Index Controllers for switching weapons (well I guess its alright).
I rebuilt a PC just for this release and ran into all sorts of issues and I’m a super computer nerd with over 40 computers in my house (3 VR stations even). After having issues with Oculus Home loading up because of HMD not detected, I uninstalled Oculus software and reinstalled everything (took like 12 hours). Played 1 hour with the Index and then switched to the Rift-S. The visuals are truely amazing and the best that I have ever seen, but looks is not everything as I still play old 1980’s arcade games :)
I too have thought that I really did prefer VorpX games like Half-Life 2, Black Mesa (awesome), Bioshock, Borderlands, etc. I like to sit down on a swivel chair and it just works sooo well now.
Thanks Ralf for your incredible product and can’t wait for the next release. Hope that Doom Eternal could be possible at some point in the future.Mar 23, 2020 at 10:08am #193385In reply to: positional tracking keep failing
RalfKeymasterHalf-Life 2: Please empty the scanner cache on the DirectVR page of the vorpX menu and re-run the scanner. For HL2 the scanner needs to find several memory locations to work corerectly. If not all are found, it would still signal success, but not work fully. If that does not help, please disable DirectVR positional tracking on the DirectVR page. Default positional tracking will still be available.
Bioshock Infinite: In this game DirectVR gets disabled below a certain draw call threshold to avoid crashes during loading screens etc. So if the issue only occurs while you for example look into the sky or at the ground, it’s probably what is to be expected. However, during normal gameplay this shouldn’t really occur. If it still does, please also disable DirectVR positional tracking on the DirectVR page. Default positional tracking will still be available.

AaronclsParticipantI agree that G3D is usually the best rendition but do not underestimate a proper Z3D implementation!
As everyone else, since my early 3D days using Tridef for flatscreens I would always prefer G3D and get a bit bummed out if it didn’t work well or at all.
However, I have noticed that a few z3D (Z-normal mostly) profiles actually look pretty damn good! And not only that, the performance gains, the correct shadow alignment and far-near controls makes Z3D a worthy contender.
The only issue that could be a deal breaker is the ghosting or outlined blur for near plane objects. However this can mitigated but scaling down the main 3D slider.
In any case, here is my best performance G3D so far:
– og Bioshock 1

I face a problem and I run out of options of what could be the issue of games not running in VorpX.
Am I doing something wrong or is this how it is supposed to be? Basically, in Black Mesa the background is ok but the foreground is covered by the character’s large hands and gun. As if it is zoomed in. In Half-life 2 this is fine because they seem to extend the arm distance out further. Is there a fix to this? Is there a thorough setup guide somewhere to Black mesa?
Thank you,
Can someone explain to me why this happens?
In Half-Life 2, I can use my x360 gamepad to control the Vorpx settings menu, i.e. use thumbstick for Edgepeek & open vorpx menu etc..
In Black Mesa, I can play the game with the gamepad but the Vorpx menu doesn’t recognize my controller inputs. I have to use the keyboard to open Vorpx menu, mouse wheel for edgepeak etc.. I just want to use my gamepad.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
