Hi MarcDwonn, thank you for your answer.
How do you activate 2160p on VD? I’ve never seen this info and when I even use Virtual Desktop own virtual screen adapter (unplugging my physical screen), the max resolution is 1440p.
EDIT : looks like the 2160p res. is only for Quest 3 headset, lucky them ! I understand better now how they could say that they achieve similar quality than physical display.

For movies I have to do my own testing. I didn’t find yet a satisfying solution that would make me stop using my TV (also because of the great colors and contrast it has!).
But I red somewhere that Vorpx takes the output of video player (like MPC-HC) before the post-processing is applied.
Also, if VD desktop view is 1440p, the result is worse compared to Vorpx and maybe worse compared to standalone apps.
    To be continued…

vorpX can only display apps/games in the headset that run on the same GPU that the headset is connected to. On a gaming laptop the Windows desktop usually runs on the slower GPU built into the CPU, so to get the desktop viewer working on a gaming laptop you would have to entirely disable the internal GPU if possible (e.g. in the BIOS).

Most gaming laptops come with some tool that allows you to force applications to the dedicated GPU, which makes sense for less demanding games/apps that the system might run on the internal GPU normally. Won’t help with the desktop viewer, but can e.g. make sense if you intend to use vorpX with video players like VLC or MPC-HC.

Apart from the above please also check for programs on your PC that may potentially interfere with vorpX. You can find more detailed information on that in the trouble shooting guide on top of this sub-forum.

Try MPC-HC if VLC doesn’t do the trick.

Caveat: similarly to the desktop viewer you will have to make sure that the video players run on your dedicated GPU. That should be easier than forcing the desktop to the dedicated GPU though. Most gaming laptops come with some app that allows you to force a program to the dedicated GPU.

You don’t need the desktop viewer for watching 3D movies. That’s actually not even the best way to do that. vorpX comes with dedicated profiles for the free MPC-HC and VLC video players.

Watching movies with the desktop viewer is inferior to using the video player profiles since it involves an additional image scaling operation as well es an additional frame rate conversion (movie > desktop > headset), instead of just movie > headset with the dedicated video player profiles.

Ok, almost got it working with out desktop viewer and its judder problems.
You actually need to vorpx to hook up to madHcCtrl.exe and not mpc-hc64.exe

So I temporarily changed my mpc-hc64.exe to something else so vorpx doesn´t try to hook up to that since its also running parallel with madhctrl.exe.

I made a copy of media player classics profile since I can not add or remove processes of that built in profile. Now it hooks up fine to madvr but now the options page for changing video format is gone?`

Ralf any ideas, can I fix it myself or do you need to make changes to vorpx itself?

I didn’t know you could hook directly into MPC-HC, Ralf.
    I don’t see a profile.
Is it as simple as starting Vorpx and then MPC-HC and it should automatically hook?

There is a profile “Mediaplayer Classic Home Cinema” and it just works. ;)
Normally when watching side by side 3d videos its easier but framepacked blurays seem to be more trickier.

If you want to use MPC-HC with the desktop viewer instead of with vorpX hooked into MPC, you can simply pause the watcher from the vorpX tray icon‘s right click menu after starting the desktop viewer.

Be aware though that watching videos with the desktop viewer involves two framerate conversions: movie framerate > desktop framerate > headset framerate. Hooked into the player vorpX upsamples directly from the movie framrate to the headset framerate, which typically is a lot better.

    new try
    2. Download the MPC HC video player https://mpc-hc.org/downloads/
    Download MadVr http://madvr.com
    install
Download K lite standart codec pack https://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
    Download LAV-Filters https://www.videohelp.com/software/LAV-Filters
    install
    3. Go into the options/settings of MPC HC video player and select the output
settings and change the video renderer into madVR
go to the external filter settings and add madVR and the 4 Lav filters to it
    4. Now everything is ready to start
    start the Vorpx desktop viewer
right click on your previously made video file and open it with the MPC HC
player (steamVr and other Vr clients should start immediately)
press the del key for the VorpX menu, go to image settings and select side by
side output then go to display settings and turn Direct Mode Async Render off
(makes the the video replay much smoother) save your settings !
sidenote : sometimes MPC HC resets the video output back to the standart
renderer make sure madVr is always in charge.

Hope it works for you enjoy !

Btw this methode maybe outdated and there a now perhaps some easier ways ?, its still working here but I have only 4 3d Bluerays :(

Hm, very strange – I changed bindings, even restarted vorpx to make sure and checked it stayed, but launching the player file gets sent to recycle bin without even promt window and while player stays open vorpx doesnt hook.

I dont know why that happens and binding doesnt affect it apparently.

I am using special standalone build because it works with SVP (https://www.svp-team.com/) which I highly recommend, but I know for a fact vorpx used to work flawlesly with it before.

VLC works but then I have to choose to ether have ambient background or high frame interpolated videos.

P.S.: If you are fixing whatever thing is messing with MPC-HC next update I am going to take an opportunity to remind you to change storage location for custom 3d backgrounds that currently are in my documents and have access issues on automatic mode (was discussed in another post).

I think it was cyberpunk update after which video player is not only not hooking it is also sending “delete” input so basically trying to open any video ends up sending it to recycle bin and thats it.

Neither VLC nor MPC-HC will allow me to open files stored on a network server, after they’ve been hooked by Vorpx. Is there a way to do that? Some workaround?

On a sidenote, the MPV profile doesn’t appear to work anymore. Can’t get it to hook using either default or alternative hooking methods.

That is already possible. The VLC and MPC-HC video player profiles allow you to configure various stereo input options, even 360° surround videos are supported, also some game profiles that rely on native SBS (e.g. Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Dolphin Emulator).

I believe it’s also available for the desktop viewer profile, if not, that would be an oversight on my end. I’ll check it tomorrow. If you want, you can check it right away yourself. If stereo input is enabled for the desktop viewer, you would find the according options on the image page of the vorpX menu.

Yes, there are various profiles that you can use as a base for SBS custom profiles. E.g. MPC-HC for DX9, Dolphin, Rise of the Tomb Raider, VLC for DX11.

Dolphin, RotTR and probably a few others I don’t recall right now are already set to SBS 3D.

The video player profiles (MPC-HC, VLC) default to mono content, but you can change the content type to SBS 3D in the vorpX menu. 360° content is also supported, stereo as well as mono.

BTW: Best 360° videos ever (although monoscopic), at leaest for the absent abstract minded like me:

vorpX cannot convert 2D movies to stereo 3D. Unlike games movies don’t contain any information that would allow an app like vorpX to create stereo 3D. Some 3D TVs tried to guess what might be foreground and background based on colors and motion, but stuff like that never really worked well.

You can however watch actual 3D movies in stereo with vorpX (and of course also normal movies in 2D). The best players for that are VLC and MPC-HC, for those vorpX has its own profiles.

In reply to: MPC-HC max quality

    Ralf

vorpX captures the video in MPC-HC before it gets fully processed by MPC-HC to ensure it doesn’t get re-sampled more often then necessary. Combined with vorpX’s own image processing that leads to a farily good quality, but it also means that almost certainly some of the things on your list are applied after vorpX grabs the image and thus will have no effect on what is sent to the headset in the end.

What exactly from your list is applied before vorpX grabs the image and what afterwards I don’t know, sorry. Judging from your list however my personal guess is that for a dedicated videoplayer buff like you no VR solution will be really good enough anyway. Unlikely that current headset display resolutions will meet your expectations, regardless how good the software is.

BTW: Even if all your filters are applied before vorpX grabs the image: filters that optimize the video for your desktop res and refresh rate don’t really make too much sense when the image afterwards gets send to a headset with a totally different resolution and refreh rate. Less is probably more here.
