metro 2033 redux crash at startup!
I prefer redux to 2033 and already have that installed and running with vorpx, otherwise I’d just try regular 2033. However, it’s not running exactly right. I’ve tried all settings exhaustively, also googled many times now. I can’t seem to find my particular problem anywhere. I’ve even tried running in all screen modes as well as geometry off and both adaptive modes. adaptive will cut all bodies in half so that’s even worse. The basic problem is that even thought 3 quarters of my screen is running o.k., the bottom half will take the last part of the visuals and seems to stretch them with perfect vertical lines. to the point where you can’t make anything out. I’ve never seen anything like it and 4D is relatively new so I have no clue as to a workaround. I’ve been simply playing & ignoring it but it’s rather difficult to ignore being that it’s the entire bottom of the screen and 100% of gameplay. It doens’t seem to effect cut scenes. Any tips appreciated as I’m out of ideas and have tried many of the settings in the vorpx menu already. Thanks ahead.
Also Metro 2033 and metro last light redux wont launch
I just did some experimenting with all the AA settings both in the Skyrim menu before entering the game and the Nvidia control panel settings.
I’m kind of blown away with my findings.
Firstly, I think Nvidia has done some incredible performance improvements with their recent drivers…namely 388.43 and up. I remember on older drivers…enabling AA in the Skyrim menu would have a little bit of performance hit…but I didn’t want to loose fps so I just left AA=off.
Secondly, after enabling AA…even all the way to 8x…in the Skyrim menu, I don’t loose any fps period with my present Skyrim settings…and the aliasing is definitely reduced…getting rock solid 90fps. I am playing 2880×2160, z-buffer, liquid sync=off, custom Skyrim settings. The aliasing on distant objects is not completely eliminated but is less noticeable and more like a native VR game. I’m thinking that I may have hit the max upscale resolution that my eyes can see, with the present HMD resolution limitations. It may also be that any AA beyond 2x or 4x at 2880×2160 is not actually being applied. There is definitely some AA happening though, and the clarity is incredible. Even without the AA on, the clarity is incredible. Close objects and NPC’s have no perceivable aliasing. Walking through buildings and dungeons also shows little to no aliasing.
I wish you all could see just how good Skyrim looks on my system with the settings I have. I don’t think any other game that runs with vorpx has the capability to look or run as good as Skyrim when upscaled. I do have Oblivion also, but have not given it any time due to the FOV issue and other things.
I really wish the Metro 2033 redux series performed as well as SKyrim in vorpx. They have some incredible visuals… Oh well, will have to wait for the next level of video cards and HMD’s to get to that performance level.
Lastly, the Nvidia control panel AA settings have no effect on Skyrim on my system. Tried them all and there is no drop in performance (though if they are actually applied there would be) and no visual difference. I’m guessing it’s the resolution I’m running that is keeping the AA from being applied.
Under normal circumstances there shouldn’t be any tweaking involved at all in making the Metro Redux games work. Also no need to download or apply any profiles. Might make sense to restore their profiles to default in the config app before doing anything else.
Head tracking in Metro games is moused based, so it’s not quite as good Direct VR head tracking, but it’s close in these games. Both use Microsofts “Raw Input” and have no mouse acceleration, so there is not too much of a difference compared to Direct VR head tracking. With the default mouse sensitivity in the game head tracking should be 1:1, otherwise you can adjust the tracking sensitivity.
FOV: The FOV is auto adjusted in these games. Unless that fails for some reason on your machine, FOV is pitch perfect with default settings. If for some reason the settings optimizer does not apply the right FOV, you can disable it (Direct VR page in the menu) and instead adjust the FOV manually in the game’s ini:
C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Local\4A Games\Metro 2033\\user.cfg / r_base_fov
C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Local\4A Games\Metro Last Light\\user.cfg / r_base_fov
The FOV value is the vertical FOV. With all vorpX settings at default values, 96 would be the correct value. If it already is at 96, the optimizer worked fine and the FOV is correct for Full VR mode with the default vorpX profile settings.
G3D/Z3D performance: that’s the nature of the beast, as always G3D is the more natural 3D, but costs performance while Z3D doesn’t look as natural but is fast.
I’d also advise against tweaking any graphics settings manually in both games. Provided the optimizer does its work as intended they are auto set to work best with vorpX.
Well after much tinkering and un-installing, re-installing of both Metro 2033 redux, Last light redux…I finally have success in running both games. There must have been something wrong with the profiles with these games left over from the prior version. After loading both local profiles for 17.3.0 I was finally able to see some progress. Also, Metro 2033 redux no longer crashes at a certain point in the tunnel.
Though not perfect, they both finally run to the point where I can actually play them like a VR game now (finally). The head tracking still seems kind of off…too much sway/tilt as I turn my head. I’ve been trying different head tracking settings but nothing stops the head sway/tilt as I turn my head. Ralf, maybe you have some suggestions.
-G3D is excellent visually but it robs to much performance to be usable for my liking. I have to try more lower resolutions with different graphics settings to see if I can make it more usable. But I think I’ll wait for this until something is done about the crashing –> (listed further down)
-z-buffer adaptive gives me the fps I want for performance but lacks depth. Turning up 3D strength just makes everything look double and weird. Skyrim looks so much better in z-buffer than these…not sure why.
-1680p gives me 90fps mostly. These games are very intense on graphic processing… especially for VR…and with the in game quality set at medium too.
-changing custom graphics settings in game (without vorpx control) almost always causes the games to crash. That is VERY frustrating…especially since you always have to wait for the tunnel stuff at the beginning to get back into the game. Ralf, maybe you could look into what may be happening here to cause the games to crash while changing in game graphics settings while vorpx is running. No crashing when running in normal 2D on a monitor.
Ralf: firstly, take a break for now for the Christmas season. When you’re well rested…maybe you have some suggestions concerning this. I’m not sure if I’m the only one but I have never been able to get the Metro 2033 series of games running properly in vorpx…ever. Even the latest 17.3.0 still doesn’t work for my installation.
I’ve done a clean steam install of Last light and for the life of me cannot get it to look right. It’s definitely something to do with the FOV, but I was expecting 17.3.0 to take care of that. Also, since the new update…Metro 2033 redux just crashes part way through the beginning when it takes you through the tunnel before it gets to the end where you select to start, continue game or set options.
In Last light everything looks warped and un-natural when inside the game using full VR. As vorpx writes it’s own configuration to each game. Could it be that the config files aren’t getting written to the game in this instance? Stumped. Suggestions? No rush though.
Hi Ralf,
Just loaded the new Vorpx, trying out the profile for Metro 2033 based on the release notes:
– Metro 2033 Redux: G3D/Z3D, full VR, Direct VR: FOV, resolution, tweaks
However, I cannot get Direct VR to run with Alt-L, nor do I see an option in the Vorpx in-game menu. Did the release include this feature for Metro 2033 Redux?
Thanks,
Satya
Every time I launch Metro 2033 Redux, the game crashes immediately. I’ve tried messing with some settings but everything results in the same outcome. Any help?
So far other games work fine, just not Metro Redux.
I have having the same problem, but with Deus Ex Human Revolution: Directors’ Cut. It will start just fine if VorpX is disabled. When VorpX is running, it tries to start and fails with the “Failed to start game (unknown error)” Steam error. Other games (e.g Skyrim, Bordlands 2) work just fine. Metro 2033 Redux and Serious Sam also worked fine (after I did the VorpX Desktop trick once). DEHR:DC, however, still fails when VorpX is running, even using VorpX Desktop.
I’ve recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
Today I started vorpX for the first time on Win 10 and was greeted with an error stating that the “vorpX VR Driver Control” has crashed (according to Process Explorer it’s the “vorpControl64.dat”.
vorpX remains in the task as tray icon and can be configured.
As a verification if the driver is doing anything, I tried running “Skyrim” (which worked before on Win 7) and it worked fine.
I also tried to run “Metro 2033 Redux” (never tried before on Win 7) and it just displays the output on screen, or if I force DirectX 9 in the config file, the game just crashes.
Since I don’t know if that’s a game/configuration problem right now or related to the driver crashing from vorpX, I’ll leave questions about that out for now (since one game works and the other doesn’t).
I’ve reinstalled vorpX just to be sure that it wasn’t the Win 10 Upgrade messing with things, but the problem remains after reinstall.
You start vorpX and it goes “vorpX VR Driver Control” has crashed.
OS is Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit (Build 10586.164)
If you have further questions regarding this issue, please ask.
I hope this issue can be resolved.
Thanks in advance and for the otherwise great software!
There are three things that you need to take care of once for each game:
1. Field Of View
You can get many games look almost perfect in this regard. And even for those that do not offer FOV control, neither directly, nor through vorpX, there are functions in vorpX to make them playable, although not always in a perfect way.
From best to worst here is what you can do:
- Set the game FOV directly in the game if it provides to dial in an FOV of 120°.
- Set the game FOV directly with the vorpX Game Settings Optimizer (vorpX config app) for games that support it.
- Set the game FOV to 120 manually through an ini tweak or external tool (avaliable for many games, google FOV + game name).
- Use the 3D FOV Enhancement in the vorpX ingame menu (availabe in Geometry 3D games).
- Play the game in Virtual Cinema Mode (can be enabled in the vorpX ingame menu).
- Use one of the letterbox aspect ratio modes in the vorpX ingame menu and/or ImageZoom.
- Use the 2D FOV-Enhancement in the vopX ingame menu (be aware that this distorts the image).
It’s NOT woking ! I’m trying now for hours and hours to change the FOV setting and it still not working at all, game is ultra zoomed.
” Set the game FOV directly in the game if it provides to dial in an FOV of 120°. ”
=> Impossible on fallout 4, metro 2033 redux, metro last light redux
Set the game FOV directly with the vorpX Game Settings Optimizer (vorpX config app) for games that support it.
=> the same ! ” optimize setting ” for FOV = 120, then ” setting applied ” then ” apply ” then…. NO CHANGE in game !
All my games are original, on steam, and not modified. I paid 35 euros for something that is not working, you have no video of tutorial on your website… great !!
Gone Home: hooks correctly here (Win 10, Steam version), but then freezes when going into the actual game from the main menu. Might be related to Win 10, which seems to require to run the game windowed to work at all here with or without vorpX. Will be looked into.
Metro 2033 Redux: works fine here (also Steam version). May have to be run in safe mode on some machines if I remember earlier reports correctly. If you also have the Non-Redux version of the game, using that is generally perferable BTW as it offers Geometry 3D when run in DX9 mode.
HL2: When support for HL2 was done, there was no VR mode. Besides that it still makes a lot of sense for stand alone mods like Black Mesa. Personally I like the way vorpX does it better BTW, but that’s almost certainly a minority vote.
In general: if you have problems with multiple games not hooking at all, please check the trouble shooting guide in the help. The most likely cause of this is some other program on your machine that creates a conflict with vorpX.
You can also try to create a special vorpX desktop shortcut to a game’s main .exe (right click the tray icon, choose “Create Destop Shortcut”), which sometimes works more reliable than the normal hooking. Doesn’t help with most Steam games unfortunately, but would be an option for the Metro 2033 GOG version for example.
I finally built a powerful computer and am getting back into Rift experimentation. I installed VorpX 0.9.1 in conjunction with Rift SDK 0.8.0.
I then reviewed the official VorpX ‘supported games’ list and tried the first three games in my Steam library that are listed on the VorpX site. The results were disappointing.
– Gone Home: Rift will not come on at all.
– Metro 2033 Redux: Rift will not come on at all.
– HL2: Rift comes on and VorpX is enabled (but presumably worse experience than the native VR now included).
My question is, do the first two games listed above simply not work with VorpX? If not, why are they featured on the Supported Games list?
If 2/3 of the listed games I tried do not work on VorpX, how many others on that list should I avoid?
Otherwise, any suggestions on how to get the first two listed to work with VorpX?
