I had the same problems some time ago, and fixed it by re-installing steamvr and mixed-reality-portal a couple of times, until the mixed-reality-portal app asked me to set it as default OpenXR runtime.

try to re-install the mixed-reality-portal, and make sure that WMR is your default OpenXR runtime

I can give this a shot, but I am running on a very fresh (less than two weeks) Windows 10 installation. I have only tried a couple of games so far, so maybe I just got unlucky.

Want to add that “OpenXR session init failed” popup will still occur on some apps that used to work (Far Cry 5 / mpc-hc) since roughly the last quarter of November 2021. OpenXR is used by mixed reality portal and SteamVR also confirms OpenXR is being used.

The only way to run those apps is to set VorpX to use SteamVR.

    Using samsung odyssey wmr headset,

You have to make sure that WMR is your default OpenXR runtime. The WMR portal should display an according warning message if that is not the case.

If your ensured WMR is your OpenXR runtime and the issue still occurs, something is wrong. Difficult to tell what, but in that case simply stick to SteamVR as a workaround.

    Perhaps also interesting:

As soon as I want to start the VorpX Desktop Viewer, the Mixed Reality Portal starts as expected. I can also catch a glimpse of the Dekstop. However, as soon as I move my head under the VR Device or press a Keyboard or mouse button, I only see a kind of loading screen on which several “balls” move. Endless….

I’ll start some other games and create the support log. Thanks a lot for your help!!! :)

    I’m getting desperate…

My HP Reverb G2 seems to be incompatible? I can use the device via Steam VR and Mixed Reality Portal without any problems.

However, I can’t get any game to display anything at all in the glasses. It always just pops up the attach to… window appears without anything happening. Have also tried the alternative hooking method and the driver. nothing.

All of course with multiple games, with and without local profiles. The glasses stay black! :(

yeah it’s bizarre. rebooting or restarting the portal didn’t work for me. It hasn’t worked for the last week, but now I just started a game, and about 10 seconds after it loaded the headtracking kicked in.. so i guess i can use openxr again at least for now.. frustrating… but hey.. it’s working

I’ve noticed a few times recently where I launch a game to soon discover there is no head roll or tracking – HP Reverb G1 OpenXR. It never seems to happen on a fresh portal boot or first game launch, but sometimes on a 2nd or 3rd game attempt. Rebooting the WMR portal seems to fix it, but I have not experienced this bug prior to Windows/vorpX updates this month.

Along side this new occurrence, I can no longer play some Ubisoft games in OpenXR. I’ve been playing FC5 and FCNewDawn in OpenXR just fine for a month, but now I get an “OpenXR init failed” for both games. They still work in SteamVR mode, but with less ideal performance. Other games still seem to work fine with OpenXR, including the AC games. Odd.

I remember when that happened. Did some posting about it. Then the problem disappeared for months.. so I wonder if WMR portal occasionally does some updating in the background that isn’t friendly with the vorpx cold.. because it just came back out of the blue and is relentless

Can’t really recommend anything else than switching to SteamVR in such a case (or restarting the PC and hoping for the best).

There was an issue a while ago where OpenXR failed to init on WMR headsets entirely while native WMR (the WMR portal) still worked. I was able to track down the issue to the head tracking, so whenever that occurs now, instead of OpenXR failing entirely, only the tracking init fails. That’s probably what you are experiencing.

There is no real pattern to if or when this issue occurs, at least none I could detect so far, and personally I haven’t encountered it in quite a while, so at this point switching to SteamVR is really all I can recommend if you encounter this issue.

For better performance in SteamVR mode, try to disable ‘FluidSync’. However: WMR headsets over SteamVR are quite prone to judder, hence for this combination FluidSync is on per default. So if disabling FluidSync causes judder, you will have to live with the capped framerate.

Applying the DirectVR FOV in Portal 2 relies on constantly brute force overriding the game’s FOV in memory. If e.g. some invasive antivirus program slows down the overwrite process with a badly written memory monitor, that might cause some FOV jitter.

Judging from your description that might be the case here. So if you happen to use any third party antivirus program, consider switching to Windows Defender by removing the third party AV.

A similar effect may occur if you have a 2-core CPU (unlikely these days), where vorpX can’t occupy a whole core for the FOV override, or if you have a lot of demanding stuff (e.g. video encoding) running in the background.

I have the same judder problems in Portal 2 using Full VR mode :(
I tried all the settings in Vorpx, and graphic settings in Portal 2
There’s no judder in immersive mode, so how is that different?

I can get it to hook on the first go, if you close and open it does not hook, turning on or off alternative hooking method seems to help or rebooting seems to help sometimes.

windows mixed reality portal must be open before

The Vorpx menu indeed could be brought up as well as CNTRL+ALT+SHFT i have been able to run the vorpx commands a few times but then they wont work again. Got pretty exited seeing them work but then could not replicate again. cycled through all the settings could

did a few other things, turned off steam start, turned off other device drivers, unplugged them like tablet, and uninstalled Nvidia experience app. but was not able to replicate getting the menus back

i thought running vorpx as admin would do it since i had the vorpX menus one time i did that but not the second. guess its just luck of the draw? but usually computer stuff is replica table of you know the sequence you did to make it work /boggle! maybe its something minor missing like an start option for vorpX?

    Hi Ralf
Thank you. But it’s not not hooking. Never get a error message about hooking. TESO is falling into the background and is no longer responding. Mixed reality portal is also crashing showing 4 circling dots. As soon I kill TESO Mixed reality portal is working again. I found out that this happens with OpenXR, with Steam VR it’s working more or less but the windows is falling into the background from time to time.

    Best regards
    Yves
