Thank you very kindly for the quick feedback, I look forward to the upcoming version. =)

Think for now I will stick to Skyrim in the Rift and GTA on monitor.
Was never able to get a feel for controlling GTA with the keyboard and mouse, it’s actually what motivated me to go out and get the controller to begin with. Moving around on foot is fine, but driving drives me nuts.

I can only speak for the unmodded Skyrim. With this book content is a 2D layer and thus considered a HUD element by vorpX. Because of this the text is scaled down if you are using UI scaling and may be hard to read.

You can work around this by using [ALT][MOUSEWHEEL] to raise the HUD scale while reading books and then lower it again the same way when you are done reading.

Yes, two are available in the dropdown in extended mode, but i usually output only to the rift due to refresh rate issues. Turns out this is due to latest nvidia drivers (anything higher than 350.12). while skyrim is ok with these it turns out fallout is not, tried every trick I could find with no result. after finding multiple reports of the newer drivers causing problems, clean installed the nvidia 350.12 drivers and everything loaded up fine with oculus 0.6.0.1 runtime, but now getting some random in-game crashes. maybe will drop back to 0.5.0.1 and see how this runs. thanks for your help Ralf.

Wondering if there was any update on this. running 0.8.1, Fallout 3 with no mods as well as trying with the recommended mods for vorpx use (unofficial patch, etc) crashing on startup. No ENB, tried all suggestions, compatibility mode, etc. Music plays, vorpx is putting out in stereo, but the screen loading is extremely slow, input non-responsive. Had it almost working once in windowed mode, but couldn’t get it to happen again when using fake_fullscreen or other workarounds. plays works fine when vorpx is turned off, other games (i.e. skyrim) playing fine with/without vorpx. Oculus utility version 0.6.0.1.

I completely agree with this review, it points out the key pros and cons of Vorpx. Also, in a sea of complaints there should be some positive reviews coming from satisfied users. Fortunately, I encountered only one issue with VorpX where it didn’t hook to Metro Last Light but the problem got solved easily with Metro LL Redux version. Except that, all the games ran flawlessly, I finished BF3, BF4, Metro series and Stalker series so far. It has been my dream to be able to play Stalker Misery mod in VR and VorpX made that dream come true. So I have nothing but respect for Ralf and his creation.

Initially I didn’t wanted to give money for a 3-rd party driver so I tried the free Vireio Perception which does a pretty good job for a few games, but has VR boost and user interface issues, frame counter impacts performance heavily etc. But all that only works on nVidia GPUs, I’m an AMD Radeon user and almost every supported game doesn’t hook in VR properly or has severe issues after level or savegame loading. Vireio developers said on reddit that they all have nVidia GPUs and will optimize for AMD in the future. So I had no other choice for playing great non-VR games in VR, other than VorpX. So after days of reading long reviews and watching youtube videos, I decided to purchase VorpX and after 2 months of daily VR gaming my conclusion is: damn was it worth it !

It has a very well made Windows and in-game interface with lots of useful options to set the best possible VR image. And after doing that a few times, it gets very easy and the user can port those settings from one game to the next, making only a few modifications to fine tune the experience. If the VR image is set properly, with best calibration, FOV, aspect ratio, head tracking sensitivity, edge peek screen distance etc, you can obtain a very immersive experience that is way better than playing the game on 2D displays. Most of the games I played were in Z-buffer mode which is a “less 3D” way of experiencing a game, but still 3D enough to perceive the spatial depth of objects. Generally this is the way most games are played in VorpX because only a few are compatible with Geometry 3D. Of course, Geometry 3D is the best way to go, total immersion, feels like a native VR game, but has a higher impact on performance which might be a problem if it’s a demanding next gen game and the GPU and system are not very strong. If you have a high end system, Geometry 3D will not decrease performance in most cases.

If you don’t have an issue with playing a game with mouse and keyboard or controller on DK2, or if you get used to doing that, I see no problem with playing games using VorpX, it feels very professional, the interface doesn’t miss any needed option, it’s easy and intuitive, it is very stable and if the user is lucky enough not to encounter the issues I sometimes read on this forum, then it is worth the price in my opinion, seeing how many AAA games will you be able to play in VR. The only small inconvenience I had throughout these 2 months of VR gameplay was the fact that not all games can be set to move the HUD elements towards the center of the display in order to be visible in DK2 and some games like Fallout 3, Skyrim or Stalker series which have RPG elements (inventory, map, dialogue interface etc) are displaying them in fullscreen which can’t be entirely visualized in VR. In order to bypass this issue, you click the middle mouse (scroll) button to enter Edge Peek mode to view the whole screen like a projection in front of you and look in the corners of the screen using head tracking. And if the text descriptions are too small or some objects are not clearly visible, you can decrease/increase the distance between the Edge Peek screen and your face (Expert options must be enabled). After a few days of use I adjusted to this method just fine, it comes naturally now, so I guess it’s not such a major issue.

In conclusion, if you love VR gaming and can tolerate DK2’s screen door effect, VorpX is the best solution to this date. All it takes is a few tweaks and settings, occasionally using an external FOV tool like Flawless Widescreen and you’re all set. The issues that some users are having with VorpX are generally caused by other software products that interfere/prevent VorpX to function properly or incorrect setup of DK2/games/VorpX. Best way of making a decision is to read as many user experiences and reviews as possible. I for one, am completely satisfied, as it made possible playing my favorite games in VR in a much better way than initially expected. Fully recommended 10/10, kudos to Ralf and any other parties involved in making VorpX.

Ive since solved the problem, turns out I had to use an older oculus runtime. I don’t know why, but it works just fine now

GTA is awesome, skyrim is great

    thanks

    Hey there,

I’m quite new to the whole oculus thing, and I just bought Vorpx today. Anyway I’m having problems with the extended mode, but I’m more focused on another problem

Although Vorpx (the actual program) recognises the rift in direct mode (it gives the warning about it), in the configuration settings, It only has Use System Settings, Show On All Monitors (which is greyed out), and Show On PHL 273V5 (My monitor)

When I load up Skyrim with Direct, it loads only on the monitor, with head tracking coming from the oculus, but the oculus is still on standby

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as playing skyrim in vr was the main motivation into getting a rift

    cheers

Assuming I’m not the only one whose Rift screen uncontrollably spins on the horizontal axis when the wireless Xbox controller is activated in Skyrim, has anyone found a fix for this?

I sure hope Ralf can get this working again if it is in fact broken with the latest GTA update. As far as I am concerned it is a better example of the possibilities of VR than most of the new VR games being announced at E3. Third person VR really doesn’t do much for me. So unless they create some immersive worlds like GTA I am happy to play with my DK2 and GTA5 until then. Thanks Ralph for making VR possible with these games. Too bad they seem to get messed up with updates. Right now mine is working great with the previous version and my new GTX980TI makes it smooth as silk. Is there any chance this will ever run in geometry mode? The Geometry mode in Skyrim is fantastic. Can only imagine GTA5 w geometry 3d.

    Hi,

I’m having a problem with Skyrim with SKSE, where it’s giving me a “Failed to Initialize Renderer. Unknown Error Creating the Renderer.”

It seems to happen any time the Rift (DK2) is in Extended mode. Occasionally it will work after spending lots of times fiddling with settings. I can never reproduce it working however. I’ve tried with the Rift as primary, as secondary, various options in the Vorpx config.. all to no avail.

If I run Skyrim SKSE with the rift NOT in extended desktop mode, but in Direct mode, it always starts. I never get the Renderer error. Vorpx will also inject properly, as expected. However it’s always on my main computer’s screen. Vorpx never pushes it to the Oculus’s screen in Direct mode.

Am I missing something, either with Vorpx or Oculus that is causing this error when the Oculus is in Extended mode? I’m out of ideas at this point.

If I can’t get that to work, is there anything I can do to get it to push the output in Direct mode to the Oculus? I heard Skyrim and Vorpx work okay in Direct mode, but it’s never showing up on the Oculus’s screen. Is there something else I need to do to have it show up there?

    Thanks!

OK since latest June 10th update I cant get any 3d out of Vorpx in GTA5. It works otherwise in 2d but no 3d either in cinema mode or straight vr. I know one difference is that flawless wide screen wont work anymore for this new update until it is revised but I am not using that at the moment just the recommended zoom settings in your post. Bummer since I was enjoying Vorpx and GTA5 so much I splurged and got a new GTX980ti to up the framerate. I don’t think that hardware change is the problem since it works fine with Skyrim and Vorpx.

Generally the settings look OK, except one thing: the way things are configured in your screenshot the game should open on the main display, not the Rift. Three things you should try:

    1. Either select the second adapter in the “Graphics Adapter” listbox of the Skyrim options window (that may be what you meant by “adapter 1 trick” though).

    2. Or Select “Show on Rift DK2” in the display adapter listbox of the vorpX config app.

    3. Or Use the Rift as main display in Windows and leave vorpX at “Use System settings”. This isn’t exactly a comfortable solution, but the most compatible one. Shouldn’t be necessary for Skyrim normally though.

Apart from that there are two other things worth checking:

    1. If you have the 0.6.0 Oculus runtime installed, go back to 0.5.1
    2. If your notebook allows you to disable the integrated graphics card, do that. Just to make sure it’s not some Optimus graphics card switching issue.

Hello VR world! Man has it been cool to re experience these games on the Oculus. Except for the one I really want :( If anyone can help me out I’d really appreciate it. I’ve clicked pretty much every relevant google search and forum post but I get the error “Failed to initialize renderer. Unknown error creating the renderer”

I’ve tried messing with every possible setting on my resolutions, skyrim graphics, oculus config and vorpx config. I’ve checked and unchecked everything, even played with the preference file, went full screen, tried the adapter 1 trick. I’ve tried reinstalling the game, removing mods and doing a clean vanilla install, updating drivers. Nothing is working. My specs are Intel Core i7-4710MQ CPU @ 2.50 GHz, 16gb RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4600. And Geforce Gtx 980m.

    Attached my current settings.

Thank you again for your time :)
