Great. Yes auto-switching sounds like a disaster waiting to happen especially with high frequency switching near the critical point (need like a digital PID regulator or something). Switching rapidly from Z3D to G3D would probably make you sick and dizzy since they look pretty different.
Anyway a simple key shortcut gives the user control and is a very simple concept and seems like a dead easy thing to implement. Could you make the specific key customize-able? That way anyone can just chose any key they please to avoid conflict. Of course you can always shift around your skyrim keys too in the options.
Just another great reason to look forward to the next exciting VorpX update :D
I find my FPS is way better in original Skyrim.
Original Skyrim 40-55 fps around whiterun in G3D and 89-90 fps Z3D (with mods)
Skyrim SE 20-40 fps around whiterun in G3D and 60-70 fps Z3D (NO MODS)
RIG: intel i-7 and Geforce 980
However, Skyrim SE does have the ability to switch G3D to Z3D without exiting!!! SO… I have a question / suggestion. Can you make a key-shortcut to switch G3D – Z3D????
That way you can use Z3D outdoors to boost FPS and G3D indoors where fps is usually better (35-45 fps for me). I would like to switch without having to bring up the VorpX menu each time (gets annoying after a while). @ Ralph: would this be simple to add to the profile if it is not already possible to do in VorpX?
Overall I like original Skyrim better, but the nice clear distant detail with no flicker z-fighting in Skyrim SE makes it worth playing for sure.
Thanks Ralf, I’m getting similar fps in both versions.
I like the color and trees in Skyrim Special Edition better, so I think I will stick to playing the new version.
Thanks for all the hard work!
got it to work! it turned out that avg antivirus was causing the crash. turning the active protection off while playing took care of the problem.
now though, i find myself thoroughly disappointed with the z-adaptive 3d implementation in this game. it’s nowhere near as good as skyrim’s 3d geometry. is this normal or is there a setting i should look at that could make it better?
i’ve tried running this game on 3d with my samsung gear vr using tridef and the implementation there was much better. it looked like real 3d.
This was my problem with Skyrim in VorpX. It’s always ‘near’ perfect, never ‘perfect’!
Thank you Ralf!
Just a quick post with my results, it’s getting soooo close to awesome, 1:1 headtrack camera would be the ultimate to alleviate minor warping when looking around with the Vive. And roomscale (I know…)! 10/10 would lean into Camila for a kiss and get skull clipping again:
skyrimprefs.ini=
ivsync=0
fullscreen=0 (whatever)
iHsize and iVsize is 1600×1280
VORPX=
G3D, 0.6 strength
pixel 1:1 and 100% zoom
headtrack at default 1.2, position on
Seeing 50-85fps indoors, 35-40+ outside, yay! Only tested first indoor/outdoor map with Ralof, I’m sure gets slower in Whiterun.
Disconnected my silly hdmi TV and turned off vsync, THEN got above 60fps.
HTC Vive
Win7 x64
i5 6600
eVGA 980ti
16gb ram
256gb ssd
Thanks Ralf!
I’ll know for myself in a few hours, but how are the new shaders working in 3D?
Fallout 4 is such a disaster in the shader department in G3D that I find it completely unplayable. I’m really worried some of that will carry over to Skyrim SE.
Opinions on lighting aside, what are the referred-to downsides of using VorpX with SE vs the original?
The preliminary Special Edition profile is now available from this post in game settings sub forum.
Make sure to follow the instructions! It’s extremely important to run the included gamesettings.cmd, otherwise all you will see is a blurry mess.
Update 2017/11/18
A recent Skyrim SE update broke the Direct VR FOV scan. If you experience this issue, please download the updated profile named ‘Elder Scrolls: Skyrim – SE [vorpX]’ from the cloud into your local profiles database (config app/cloud profiles).
Fresh vorpX installs already include this updated profile. You only need to download it if you installed vorpX prior to 2017/11/18.
Update:
A new and improved version of this profile is now included in the latest vorpX version 17.1.0 – No need to download the profile anymore. I’ll leave the discussion pinned for now since the game seems to be quite popular.
Hey, I’ve been playing Skyrim in Z-normal mode because I can make it look alot better with great performance. However, there’s one issue. Pretty much all meshes are surrounded by a sort of distortion halo that’s thin and surrounds the edges of the meshes. This affects actors and scenery like mountains. Is this a known problem? Is there a solution? I use ENB if that helps (Specifically Realvision with all options turned on). Even when I disable the ENB effects, though, the problem persists.
I’m not sure whether I really understand everything you Skyrim pros are talking about, sorry. But you will very soon have the choice yourself and can then experiment and see what you like best for what exact scenario. I will make a recommendation that I think is the right one with vorpX for people who just want to play the game. At least for now that is the DX9 version.
That might not be the right choice for installations with dozens of mods, texture packs etc. though.
Not the ENB graphics mod, the ENBoost memory fix. It fixes the game’s memory allocation and greatly improved performance.
The big question here is, will the Vorpx provided performance of fully modded 32-bit game, even with ENBoost fix, be equal to the Vorpx provided performance on 64-Bit engine, considering that you don’t need really need to mod any graphics now. I always thought that 64-Bit and integrated graphics upgrades would outperform heavily modded old skyrim.
Since Ralf talks plain engine, no mods, having SSE in vorpx over old skyrim is already a big win, since unmodded old skyrim looks like a poop at dusk, and SSE, while there is still room for improvement, already looks great and provides huge boost to performance (after VS and file integrity issues are fixed) thanks to 64-bit engine.
Right out of the gate, SSE looks like moderately modded Skyrim. It’s too good to let go.
I think Ralf doesn’t give himself enough credit. VorpX is an amazing tool that already does the seemingly impossible. In time, I’ve little doubt both it and SSE will only improve. Hell, only a couple years ago the idea that anyone short of NASA with a rack of Crays could walk around in ANY VR world, much less Skyrim fully detailed was the stuff of an opium dream.
Yet here we are.
It’s amazing to me how people on the Vive forum are blown away by the most basic looking VR games that are natively coded and yet here we are discussing modding already high detail textured worlds.
Yes, also – I could not get the ENB stuff working with vorpx, which left the original graphics which are a bit dated :( Figured I just wait for the SE to work.
The SE semi-works with a fallout 4 profile – no 3d, I can not tell any difference between any of the 3d settings. Also note: could not get FOV changed in game or using vorpx – but if I used the Skyrim console (~) I could type fov 100 and it would work fine, between game loads and restarts as well. So thats a start.
I agree with you. Also i am too lazy to go back to old Skyrim and mod it’s graphics. I like SSE because it already has improved graphics and in addition – 64 Bit client. I believe in Ralf’s kung-fu. He will teach Vorpx to take advantage of the SEE 64-Bit engine.
