One of the things I found is that the mods like Skyrim Performance Plus were great for framerate because they pulled out a lot of Inconsequential items. But they ARE rather consequential since without them, your eyes more readily focus on whats left…so you see a lot more problems when they happen. While thats great for troubleshooting, it royally blows for having a fun game/immersion experience.

DynDOLOD seems to give you the best of both worlds. I just spent an hour running through blizzards, tundra and forests and my framerate was fine. But it was a whole new Skyrim as instead of seeing lots of blank or barren areas, there was a LOT of ‘missing’ things replaced, including the things ‘missing’ in the normal game.

It is a great thing to stand atop the clif at the archer chick’s cabin in the mountains and suddenly see Falkreath in detail, Pinewatch and the island to the lake in the north … along with a ton of much closer stuff that is normally just not there.

    Damn mod is a miracle.

I’m considering one of two upgrades to improve the FPS for my Vive/vorpX:

    1. Buy a SECOND EVGA 1080 FTW card for an SLI setup. Or…

    2. Upgrade my i5 4670 3.4Ghz CPU and MSI z87 G45 motherboard to something like you have.

So just to confirm… If I buy a second 1080 FTW card, and it boosts my Skyrim on a traditional display from a 200 to 400 FPS average, then theoretically it should boost my Skyrim on the Vive from a 50 to 100 FPS average, no?

Or do you think a processor upgrade would do more to improve performance? I know most games are not effected by CPU, Skyrim being an exception.

That is indeed unusual. With medium to high settings you normally should get 40fps+ with your system in most parts of the map with a few dips below that (~30) here and there in towns and areas with dense vegetation. Everything below that is definitely not normal.

If you use an older Skyrim install, please first and foremost follow the above advice and try a fresh install without mods. Also semi popular graphics enhancing ini-tweaks (uGridsToLoad etc.) reduce performance severely. So make sure you don’t use anything like that.

Also don’t use the “Ultra” graphics preset in the Skyrim options. Try “High” or even “Medium”. The latter shouldn’t be necessary though.

You need to make sure that the game runs at a decent framerate. Native VR apps usually run at 90fps, so yes, 15-20fps is too low by far. This also causes the flickering. The OpenVR runtime does not work well with low framerates.

You need to make sure to reach 45fps for a comfortable experience by lowering graphics settings and/or switching to Z-Buffer 3D in the vorpX ingame menu, which is a lot faster than Geometry 3D (but doesn’t look as good).

In case you use mods, please also try a fresh Skyrim install without any mods. Many graphics enhancing mods and tweaks can reduce your frame rate severely.

    Hello,

I got vorpx a few days ago and was really excited to play skyrim on it. My system specs:

    gtx 980 ti
    i7-5820k CPU
    16Gb DDR4 RAM
    Windows 10 64-bit
    HTC Vive

I read about the settings and fired up vorpx and a clean install of Skyrim with no mods. I made sure to select the right headset in the configuration menu before starting a game. After setting the FOV I realized I had horrible flickering and very low FPS (15-20).

I figured out the flickering issue and it totally went away after applying the optimal settings. Yay! I’m not sure what to do about the low framerate. I feel like my system should be able to do a little better. I have messed around with different settings but can’t find anything that helps.

Another issue – I wanted to get past the first part of skyrim so at least I’m outside because after 5 minutes of gameplay I was so sick I had to quit. I don’t know if it’s the low framerate or what. I have not gotten sick on any VR game yet so this was a little surprising. I decided to at least play it normally to get past the first part but now my normal skyrim game is all distorted. I made sure the vorpx driver was disabled and no vorpx icon was showing on the taskbar. But the game is all fisheyed and that makes me feel dizzy just on my monitor.

Did something in the optimizer do this? Can I fix it? Any suggestions to feeling ill or getting a higher fps?

    Thank you so much!

You can remap gamepad buttons on the gamepad page of the vorpX ingame menu.

Alternatively you can enable the *experimental* Direct Head Tracking on the head tracking page of the ingame menu, which currently is avalilable for Skyrim and Fallout 4. This enables native gamepad support. Be aware though that this is truly experimental. It might or might not work on your PC.

    Hey,

I’ve been playing Skyrim with VorpX a lot and really enjoyed it. My combination of mods, Skyrim settings and VorpX settings has been working pretty well, until now.

After about a 2 weeks long break, I find that the game stutters anywhere – Even small places with great framerate, and places that have been smooth as butter before. The stuttering is hard to describe – It doesn’t feel like bad framerate, but it seems like the image “lags” behind or jumps around somewhat now and then, and sometimes it feels like I’m seeing double for a split second.

The weird part, which I hope might help solve the problem, is that this issue is completely gone while the VorpX menu is showing on top. As soon as I bring that up, everything is as it was before. But I’d rather not play with that in the middle of my vision :)

The only system change I can think of that has been made since I last played is an Nvidia driver update, and I have tried rolling back the driver to one I know worked well, without luck.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be the reason?

Edit: I can add that I’m using the Rift CV1 and that I’ve tested some native VR games after I discovered this issue, which worked perfectly.

An i7 6700k at default speed. Maybe you are expecting more than what is OK for me. What I get with the 1080 is a ~60% boost compared to a Rift/Vive minimum specs GPU (GTX970). Since I didn’t really expect any improvement at all due to the wrongly assumed CPU limitation that was a quite nice surprise.

With a 970 there are some difficult areas with dense vegetation that bring the frame rate down to about 30fps at high settings on Vive, which means the OpenVR runtime likely starts to flicker. With the 1080 you should get a high enough frame rate to avoid that more or less everywhere, but you still won’t get 90fps on the outside map if that is what you were hoping for. Not using Geometry 3D and high settings.

It also might be important to note that I used the “High” settings preset, not “Ultra”.

And just in case (because of your other recent question): also make sure to leave Fluid Sync at the default (enabled) on Vive for Skyrim! Disabling it raises the workload on the direct mode/timewarp render thread, which can reduce the achievable game frame rate considerably, especially in difficult situations. That’s the main reason why disabling Fluid Sync is only recommended for games that can reach 90fps easily on Vive.

Shadows should work just fine, not sure why they didn’t for the author of the reddit post you linked. So normally you shouldn’t need any shadow related ini tweaks. In regard to mods I would generally recommend to install not too many of them. With all the nice things available I understand that it’s tempting, but at least graphics enhancing mods often degrade performance, which should be avoided.

The one extra tweak I would recommend is forcing transparency antialising in the graphics driver control panel. Helps a great deal with foliage in Skyrim.

You might be able to gain a few extra FPS with some more arcane ini tweaks, but I honestly would rather spend that time playing instead of tweaking to gain 5fps.

    BTW:

After setting up a new machine with a GTX1080 last weekend Skyrim was one of the first games I tried. With that machine an unmodded Skyrim finally worked quite nicely at 1600×1200 using the “High” options preset in the Skyrim launcher on Vive doing nothing else than FOV/Optimizer and transparency AA in the graphics driver.

I always was sure the CPU was the limiting factor in Skyrim, but apparently I was wrong. A faster GPU helps a great deal.

Does it still improve performance applying certain tweaks to either the skyrim.ini or skyrimprefs.ini files like the ones suggested HERE and HERE?

Or does applying the cloud profile and game optimizer do this automatically now?

    OK fixed.

I downloaded new drivers for my GPU, and that auto put my Vive into Clone mode.
Yep I was barking up the wrong tree all this time changing the display in Windows, when it should have been the Nvidia control panel.

So a lesson learned. The hard way.

But seeing as I couldn’t see an option for deleting this post.

Maybe it might help some other bod in the same pickle.

Now Skyrim is running as sweet as a nut.
And brother its freaky how real it is, when NPCs are life size.

    Hello.

I have tried for hours to get Skyrim running. Have managed it twice. Though sheer luck, even though it was really low res.

    My specks are.
    GTX 980ti 6gb.
    16 gig 2400 DDR3.
    i5 4690k
    Win 10
    etc.

    The problems I am having.
All the native VR games work on the Vive. But when trying to use VorpX.

1, When I try to put Vive into “direct Mode” it just keeps going round and round telling me that “Steam VR is in extended mode. And Extended mode is not recomended, please switch to Direct mode?”
So I click on “Enable Direct mode>” it then restarts dierct mode, cancelling the game launcher in the process. And then the popup appears again, above the SteamVR box saying the exact same thing,
“Steam VR is in extended mode. And Extended mode is not recommended, please switch to Direct mode?”
    What am I doing wrong?

2, Ralf in another thread mentioned that “vorpX only works in direct mode, extended mode pretty much is a thing of the past. I’m a bit surprised even that it is still available in SteamVR.”
But I dont see an alternative, in display settings there are only 2 choices for the monitor, and the Vive, Extended. or Duplicate? so which should I set it to.
And again why is the direct mode not coming on? is it because I have the wrong mode selected.

I have also looks at the FAQ on “what is wrong before you post. And it says to clone the monitors not extend. But when I duplicate, (Which I assume is Windows 10s clone)
Steam wont launch any games, even native VR gamess, as it says, “I need to enable extended display.”

I then get a series of other popups, and crashes, than seem to be random. The most common is “Failed to initialize render, unknown error creating the renderer.
Popup appears, and I have no idea what to do here.

I have tried selecting Vive as main display.
But that opens a whole bunch of new issues.
1, That I cant access my main screen on the monitor.
And in the Vive, when I click, or hold, or scroll middle mouse wheel I cant get the “edge peek to work.” So I cant read most of the text in popups, or instructions.
So do I need to have Vive as primary display? to get Skyrim working?

And other times the Vive screen just goes red, and I have to reboot the whole thing.

I have tried to Google Guide to VIVE skyrim play / setup / launch etc. But what there is are for the Rift.

I assume I am doing something fundamentally wrong, I just dont know what.

I am not trying to be awkward, I just want get it working, as I know it will with the right information.

    Please., can anyone help.

A step by step guild to starting Skyrim on the Vive please.

    Thank you for any help.

    Andy.

Hey Ralf, thanks for the reply.

I did look at the VorpX settings before, and will be having a good read through in a little.

There were 3 issues. With your help, 2 are solved.
    1, Vive is now chosen.
2, I will ignore the “run Skyrim in both HMD and monitor” popup.

But I cannot got into Skyrim because it keeps saying..
    ““Failed to initialize renderer.
    Unknown error creating the renderer.”

I have set the Vive extended desktop.
And set the Vive to primary display.
I have also gone into VorpX and in the profile for Skyrim, have ticked use 1280×1024 resolution.
I still get the render error popup.
I have also then, gone into Skyrim startup options and selected 1080×1920. Still the popup.
I even tried flipping the landscape screen, (I read a post somewhere saying something about this.) But all that did was turn my Vive environment upside down.

    Any help please.

And sorry for all the questions, but Skyrim is THE game I want to work.
And this is also great learning for other games.

    Thanks Ralf.

    Hello. ☺

Well I,m just trying to get my first game on working on Vive with VorpX.
Skyrim…. the main reason I wanted a HMD. Anyhoo.

I have run into 2 problems.

I keep getting this message “vorpx could not initialize your Oculus Rift. it reported.”

But I dont own an oculus. (Never have). I have a Vive.

And also its saying it will run Skyrim in both HMD and monitor, and says “This may not run acceptable.” or words like that.

Help please Ralf, your my only hope.

    Ok, here it is:

I run Windows 10 on a different SDD, same computer:

    I5-6600 @3.30 ghz
    16gb DDR4
    GTX 970 Strix
    Corsair MK2
    MSI z170 A PCMate

I tried to install the Oculus on that SDD, had to perform a firmware update for the Oculus.
And VorpX does a GREAT job. Skyrim, maxed out settings, no jitter, no lag, just a sweet ride.
I prefer run VorpX on my main setup with W7.
Any idea what driver/problem it could be that prevents Vorpx from performing as well on W7 as it does on Windows 10?
