    Semi related sidenote:

    The next vorpX will finally have G3D support for the fan-made System Shock 2/Thief/Thief 2 DX9 renderers.

    Since these DX9 renderers use DX9 in a rather unusual fashion that clashes with how G3D normally works in vorpX, G3D support requires a specific new method that probably only ever will make sense for these three games. So that always stayed on the backest of all imaginable backburners. ;)

    But – low and behold – mere 13 years after wondering for the first time why the heck this doesn’t just work, it finally will very soon. G3D, scalable HUD included.

    The working profile has been uploaded to the cloud.

    After trying the official profile without success, I was able to achieve depth using a different official profile.

    The 3D effect breaks every time you take out a weapon or a blackjack. After using them, always hide them using the ~ key (or any other key you assigned earlier for that purpose). This restores the 3D effect. In most other games, this issue would make the game unplayable in 3D, but in Thief it’s irrelevant, as the game focuses on stealth and exploration.

    With everything properly configured, the game looks as good as Blood in G3D. The City in the “Endless Rain” and “Winds of Misfortune” fan missions is breathtaking.

    Once everything is set up, the 3D effect is strong, creating a real sense of moving through space and observing objects with depth.

    Steps to make everything work:

    Install TFix 1.27 for Thief I, Thief II, and Thief Gold.

    Copy (clone) thief.exe and rename it to thiefvorpx.exe. Repeat the same process for Thief II and the executable inside the Thief Gold folder.

    Change the FOV to 140 in cam_ext.cfg. Don’t forget to remove the “;” so the optional FOV setting works. You can adjust the FOV to your preference, but remember you may also need to tweak VorpX Immersive Mode settings and save the changes.

    Set the resolution to 3840×2880. For this resolution to appear in-game, you must select it in your screen settings after launching VorpX Virtual Desktop. To enable this, create a custom resolution in VorpX Virtual Monitor. Once created, launch VorpX Virtual Desktop, right-click on your desktop, open Screen Settings, and select the resolution. Then launch the game and choose 3840×2880.

    Websites like Thief Missions and Keep of Metal and Gold host over a thousand fan missions. Most are unrated, but the only way to judge them—especially in VR—is to play them. Even a simple mission aesthetics can be great to look at in 3D. With the sense of moving through space, you gain access to countless new places to explore, with VorpX acting as the only secret door to them.

    Use AngelLoader to catalog and launch fan missions. Start them through VorpX Virtual Desktop via AngelLoader.

    After playing for a while, adjust VorpX Immersive Mode settings to your liking—distance, scale, curvature, and so on.

    Use Alt + Space to recenter if you feel too short or if you feel that the picture is misaligned.

    Optional:

    Set F5 for quicksave and F9 for quickload—you’ll use them frequently.

    You can also try cloning the Dark Messiah of Might and Magic VorpX profile, as more options seem to work in Z-Normal mode. However, there may be ghosting issues.

    For the best immersion, use Peltor (or similar) noise-canceling headphones together with Panasonic in-ear buds, and a backlit keyboard for night play.

    Consider using a Samsung HMD Odyssey Plus headset for excellent colors and contrast in Thief and The Dark Mod. Since darkness is a core part of the experience, display quality matters greatly.

    The Samsung HMD Odyssey Plus still offers outstanding color and contrast thanks to its AMOLED screen technology.

    When buying one, ask the seller whether the USB cable (which is long and sturdy) works properly. Signal interruptions can crash AMD drivers. If the system detects a signal loss (VorpX acts as a virtual monitor), it may switch to standard graphics drivers, resulting in a black screen.

    Note that AMD Adrenalin driver crashes can still occur even with a fully functional cable. In such cases, both the monitor and headset may go black. You may need to restart your computer and manually reinstall the graphics drivers—often twice, as the first attempt may fail—via Windows Device Manager.

    Minor scratches or blurring on lenses can be removed using PolyWatch Plastic Polish. However, on some headsets, it may cause additional blurring.

    Only use PolyWatch if you are certain it’s safe for your device, as improper use can damage the lenses.

    Removing scratches requires applying firm pressure—don’t be afraid of pressing too hard, but proceed carefully.

    If you’re doing this for the first time, watch several YouTube tutorials. PolyWatch works by dissolving plastic on a microscopic level, so avoid overuse, as it can deform or reshape the lenses.

    Tips for new Thief players:

    Always pick up rope arrows—they are reusable.

    You can pull yourself up by pressing and holding Space after a jump.

    Shooting rope arrows close to edges makes climbing easier.

    Some surfaces (like windowsills) are wooden—these can support rope arrows if you aim carefully.

    Certain pipes can be climbed.

    Some roofs can be climbed by jumping and holding Space, similar to windowsills and walls.
    Doors and windows can be deceptive—some that look unusable can actually be opened. Always check them up close.

    Knocking out peasants is not always a good idea. They may serve a purpose, such as opening doors, which they cannot do if unconscious.

    Hey everyone,

    So, I feel like a TOTAL IDIOT. I have had some Vorpx games I wanted to go back and play, such as Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, or older Deus Ex games, Thief series, etc… That dont support controllers.

    I did try Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines like 4 years ago, but ran into a problem during the “Hacking” sequences and navigating in a computer in the game; along with some abilities just not being available from a lack of buttons.

    Now, I think I have found a fix for this problem; and its been staring me in the damn face for years.

    The Xbox ChatPad.

    Its a small keyboard that plugs into the bottom of your Xbox controller, and features a full keyboard, along with numbers 1-9 and 0, like a regular keyboard.

    For instance, in Vampire the Masquerade, I would need to press specific buttons to access hacking and other things, which resulted in me having to take off my headset, find the button on my keyboard, then proceed… In the end, it became too much of a Slog to actually do it long term and I quit.

    Now, I think we have a fix. You can map your controller in Steam as you like for the game, get movement, some main attacks and camera controls onto your Controller, then add this piece of hardware in to give you access to all the shortcuts youd have with a regular keyboard, but actually attached to our Controllers.

    Here is a guide on it – I have no lept in to buy it yet, doing some more research on it; but these might be a boon for other players who, like me, prefer Vorpx VR with a controller; but have been held back by the keyboard shortcuts not being available to us.

    Im probably going to get this, this seems like way way too good of a solution that I have known about for years and never put two and two together. It also may help any of you just playing normal games without controller support, put basic movements, camera control on your controller; then use the Xbox Chatpad to access more shortcuts based upon the game’s actual Keyboard controls.

    Here is the guide, Im going to be looking into this some more. Just wanted to point it out.

    Take care, all

    Try the Dark Mod with the game’s VR mod.
    The dark mod is a standalone game that is based on thief.

    Hey guys. I am using VorpX after about 1 year break and nothing works as expected. I try Elder Scrolls Online, it doesn’t hook with OpenXR, needs SteamVR. This works but horrible graphic glitches / bugs / texture errors. I tried Portal, flickering, very low resolutions, screen jumping around, message box “try 4:3 resolution to avoid flickering”, I try 4:3 but same, my weapon is jumping around, textures flickering black-purple-white-black-purple-white. I try Thief 2. even though its listed as “supported” game I have no 3D at all. The game is working with my headset but I have no depth / real stereoscopic 3D at all. I try supported local profiles, I try cloud profiles, there is not a single game that works without errors / glitches / graphic bugs.

    I have HP Reverb G2. nVidia RTX 3070

    Hey everyone,

    Was looking at getting Thief Gold and the Dark Ages for cheap on steam and was wondering how well the controller support was for those games with Steam’s built in controller support/modification options. Do the games work well in Vorpx with controller or would I kind of ‘have’ to use a mouse/keyboard?

    I wouldnt mind having to use a mouse for like inventory management and stuff during pauses, but didnt know if the gameplay itself worked well with a 360/Ps4 controller, etc.

    Thanks for any help!

    I have completely reinstalled the game without making any changes and I have the same problems.

    I’ve done some more testing:
    – The VorpX cursor (Alt+C) makes navigation in the game menus much better.
    – The only parameters modified by VorpX are in the registry (no modified ini file).
    – My game is installed in “D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Thief\Binaries2\Win32\…” (default Steam path)
    – My screen and game resolution is set to 4:3

    But I have a new problem, I can’t reset the profile of Thief 4, when I reset it in the vorpx configuration software (Restore Game Settings) it disappears as it should, but when I restart the game my old modifications are still there (lumasharpen, contrast…) it’s been 4 times that I reset it without success.

    Hello Ralf, I wanted to play Thief 4 with the new update, but I couldn’t.

    The Thief 4 profile does not work, there are several problems:
    – The mouse cursor does not appear on the screen (but the buttons work)
    – The game doesn’t play any sound in my headset (the sound from my Rift S is on the headset audio channel)
    – The game camera moves in all directions if I move my head, and I have the impression that the FOV is not good (it’s hard to determine) which makes the game completely unplayable in FullVR (Putting the option in VorpX “Input Settings > Try Pitch Lock > On” alleviated the problem)
    – There is no DirectVR Scan button?

    Other than that the VorpX hooking up is good and the G3D seems to work well.

    I’m also using this post to give some settings I found (and that work) that could improve the VorpX profile of the game:

    Disable motion blur (Thief\Engine\Config\BaseEngine.ini):
    motionBlur=False
    motionBlurPause=False

    Disable the black/white vignette effect around the screen (ThiefGame\Config\ThiefGame.ini):
    mbForceHideCloakEffect=1

    Mouse setting (to be tested):

    Disable mouse smoothing (ThiefGame\Config\ThiefInput.ini):
    bEnableMouseSmoothing=false

    Reduce mouse input lag (Engine\Config\BaseEngine.ini):
    OneFrameThreadLag=False

    Reduce mouse lag (ThiefGame\Config\ThiefEngine.ini):
    bSmoothFrameRate=FALSE
    MinSmoothedFrameRate=0
    MaxSmoothedFrameRate=0

    (I use the new update, The game is running on Oculus Rift S, I have a RTX 2060 on Windows 10, I don’t have Antivirus, only Defender and no software running in the background. Excuse my bad english)

    Some other profiles that will do Z3D are Mortal Combat X and Thief [2014]. One of those may provide better control over the 3D strength. The SoulCaliburVI profile on the cloud does a fairly decent G3D, but some HUD elements only appear in one eye – may be possible to fix with the shader authoring tool.

    All of these require dgVoodoo and the game doesn’t like to be hex-edited so just ignore the warning from vorpx.

    OK, did some testing and here comes the result:

    In order to make it hook, I have to follow exactly these steps:
    – run WMR
    – run Thief 2014 from Steam, but only to the launcher
    – run SteamVR
    – run vorpX
    – click on Play in the game launcher

    It looks great and is indeed nice experience.

    For some reason, vorpX does not allow me to switch to 2160p from the ingame menu. It changes the resolution to 1440p only. So I let it to set the FOV, set manually the desired resolution to 2160p in the registry and then disallowed changing game resolution in vorpX app.

    Hope this helps others if having the same issues.

    Hello,

    I am reviving this thread since it is also about Thief (2014), which I grabbed for next to nothing in the current Steam sale.

    It does not hook (I will investigate more this evening).

    But what surprised me is that there are two pop-ups with the message that vorpX is attaching to XY.exe. I get just one such pop-up with other games (that hook OK). After some time the hooking times out and voila. Can one pop-up prevent the other to hook and vice versa?

    I am a bit confused here. Any ideas?
    Thanks,

    Milan

    No memory scanner is perfectly normal. Try a full factory reset please on the trouble shooting page of the config app. If you have profiles with settings that you want to keep, drag and drop them from the ‘Local Profiles’ list to your desktop first!

    With the default Thief [2014] profile vorpX is supposed to auto-adjust the FOV and apart from that all should just work unless you changed the game’s mouse sensitivity, which would require to re-calibrate head tracking.

    Resolution: Can’t recall whether this is the case here, but some games have the unfortunate habit of not allowing resolutions higher than the current desktop res. In such cases you would have to change the desktop res first.
