In reply to: Image remains unsharp despite custom resolution
RalfKeymasterPlease be aware that using this tweak creates extremely large final render target textures with vorpX (roughly 6000×8000 pixels). vorpX already does something like that internally. Adding the tweak on top of that leads to excessively large textures.
The right way to enhance image quality with vorpX is to set the game resolution as high as your PC can handle without loosing too much performance, which also has a far larger effect on quality.

archeriaParticipantSolved, I used the debug tool and setting “Pixel per display pixel override” to 2 fixed my problems. Sorry for making the thread, I should have actually tried it from the start.

13FParticipant4k with wider 210 fov is very impressive, but the pixel density could be similar to cv1/vive due to the additional 100 degree and the screen door effect is expected.

RobLocksleyParticipantRight. Saw your post on Nvidas forum or was it Overclockers.
Well, I got my Titan Pascal and I put in an order for EK-waterblock that will arrive in about 2 weeks.
From what I’ve gathered from reading reviews and tests (with and without water) it seems that 1.It is bound by the power it can draw (about 300W if one is generous) and 2. Problem with heat, that water will alliviate.
Overclocking the GPU first hand then push the memory, since you don’t want to starve the gpu of power funneling it off to the memory (give less fps raising mem).
I can’t test anything since VorpX wont accept my registry number. Bought it last week before getting my Titan but it just wont start the license. Bugger it all :(
And it looks like I lost a memory channel on my cpu, will try and reseat it sometime in the future but I don’t have high hopes…
Well, I guess I will just play Elite.
And yeah, was somewhat dissapointed in the resultion – it is both better and worse than I imagned. Better becasuse it is more than I expected, worse because at the end of the day I want more pixels :)
Cheerio!

monkeyfistParticipantYou can run it on lower resolution, even at the same resolution as CV1 and HTC. But you will not have the same screen door effect as the pixels on the screen are so much smaller.
Its nice to notice, that no matter what forum you post stuff. The people who are most inclined to reply are the basic yber negative forum lurkers. The reason i do not waste time on forums, as there is always the people who says “the manual says no!”.
Also found out that the position tracking is easy to do with 3 ir leds, webcam and software like freetrack or opentrack. Usually every problem is solvable. Unless you listen to the people of the forums. Then everything is IMPOSSIBLE!

monkeyfistParticipantCost was the main issue using cheap lenses. That is just the way it is.
“A Fresnel lens is an optical component which can be used as a cost-effective, lightweight alternative to conventional continuous surface optics.”
And fresnels are fresnels, they are the cheapest possible way to make lenses. They can be stamped out of plastic.
It´s a product, they make it to make money. They cut cost on everything they can.
Vr gear is extremely simple, so it does not take ages to make something that works. It was merely an issue of components did not exists yet.
And like i said, the S1 is 3rd generation device from 3Glasses. It’s not like they just knock em out in a month.
It’s a big market also in China. You seem to just have the basic western exceptionalism attitude.
People are already noticing how limiting the low resolution on htc & oculus is.
I have a monitor with 1920×1200 resolution, and it fills about 1/8 of my field of view, and i can see pixels. So what happens when i fill my whole field of vision with less pixels? Does not take too much math to realize it’s not exactly optimal.
This is why, resolution is the key for all VR gear. And i would never pay 800$ for a system that is trash after one year when better devices with actually usable resolution come out. I would just lose most of my money trying to sell it for 1/2 – 1/3 of the price.
And yes, i bough DeePoon E2 for little money used. And will gladly pay 300$ for 4k device if it has some support. This is why i’m askin VorpX to support these, as they are mostly HMD with proper resolutions. I have no interest playing childish VR games with weird dongle controllers jumping in my room. I only need a high resolution HMD with head tracking, for stereoscopic 3d.
And china is the only one who is offering devices like these currently.

monkeyfistParticipantThe lenses are low cost, they try to use software to do it more cheaply. They try to correct all the lens problems in software. Everyone knows proper glass lenses cost money. And now single element lens is ever corrected enough. You need at least 3 elements to do an anastigmat lens.’
Plastic lense also scratch really easily.
I think microsoft published instructions on how to replace Oculus lenses with achromatic glass ones. Also published comparison photos that showed they were clearly far superior. Like you would assume from real glass lenses.
And fresnel lense, they are the cheapest possible alternative. Nothing i would ever use in any optical path. A clear cost cut, gotta maximize the profits. Fresnels are fit for lighting gear etc. like i said. I have plenty of experience using fresnel lenses on many different applications, but never in optical path.
The chinese things probably have the same low cost plastic lense, but not fresnels. At 300$, i don’t dream of high quality glass lenses. But with 4k resolution, it would be super nice.
And as i said, the new 3glasses S1 is actually 120hz and has 2k resolution. And there was no data about the PIMAX 4K UHD.
You really believe that 4 times more resolution equals to “less clear image” ? :) It’s a pretty simple device, you have a display and lenses. If the lenses are even close to oculus level or same, then you have a lot better image thanks to 3 extra megapixels.
Saying it’s like google cardboard, is again dumb. As there is only one phone with 4k display out there, and the processors on them can’t actually run 4k content like PC can. And “just more resolution”, that i pretty much the whole point. More resolution = better. But if you like playing games on low res..
I also think the 300$ price is really fair, compared to Oculus Cv1.. it’s 1/3 of the price. The price even included shipping. And it’s 4k. The problem is just, does it work with games etc. I have no idea. If it does, i would buy it.
The main reason in my interest for them, is the 4k. As i think the current stuff has too low resolution to put any serious money on them. They will loose all the value when they finally will have proper resolutions for actual gaming.

RobLocksleyParticipantVery nice!
I got liquid cooling and I would say it’s the best thing I did to my computer; had it on a few builds the last ten years or so. Now it is ‘only’ on the cpu and gpu, don’t see the need to cool other parts, besides in restricts flow.If it is not a total fail I will be getting Deep Mind 12 when Behringer releases that Synth. Just got the Korg Minilogue a month ago and I really like it (I know not all are sold on the sound though).
Interesting that 1920×1440 gives such an impact, one wonders what is happening with the pixels when oversampling makes such a huge difference on a lower rez display.
Good luck in all your endeavours :D

FredthehoundParticipantOK folks, here’s the deal on ENBoost. It works. It’s stable. It does a couple strange things like flashing out to the ‘grid room’ and back on rare occasion for no reason I can yet determine. And it helped me get a majority of 45FPS at 1920×1440…but I had to back off some things to get there. However, the increased rez helps a lot.
First, Upscaling had to come down to 1.2. AA and Anio set at x4 and x8 respectively. Ambient occlusion off.
I had tried upping my 4790K to 4.8Ghz which helped very noticeably, but it became unstable and BSOD/clock errored so back to 4.7. As I am currently on a single 110mm AIO cooler that has thusfar been a champ, the 10 deg jump wasn’t shocking getting this close to the edge…but there is no way to up the voltage to try stabilizing 4.8 and keep it cool enough as is. A 240mm rad might be enough to do it with good fans or push/pull/both.
It seems the key to smoothness is keeping that GPU clock stable at all costs. So Liquid cooling will be in my future whether or not it helps ultimate top speed.
As for ENBoost…

The higher supersampling settings/AA/Ansio induce stuttering. Not 100% sure the definitive source of that as I am forcing AA/Ansio in the drivers, not skyrim and the CPU/GPU is still far from maxing out…at least as far as Afterburner is reporting. Could/likely be a CPU bind on I/O. VorpX itself shouldn’t really care one way or the other if I understand its functionality correctly. However, getting this far at all, and the level of improvement so far are about 1000 times more that I think anyone could have imagined anyway.

monkeyfistParticipantThe S1 has 120hz and 2k display, also i don’t think LCD is so bad as everyone is pretty much gaming on them all the time.
I would consider gaming on a low resolution a bigger bummer, than a little bit of motion blur.. that i actually don’t see even on my LCD monitor. I know its supposed to be there, but i just can see it while i play. 4k means 4megapixels per eye, it’s a huge difference compared to the oculus & htc 1.2megapixels.
I would not dismiss these things without actual user experience.
The positional tracking is pretty useless and of no interest at least for me, i don’t think vorpX supports it anyhow. And the S1 actually has that.
I would not call 4k a “gimmick”.
Also, i don’t believe that 60hz is too slow, as you rarely even hit 60fps in games. And standard frame rate for movies is under 30fps. Didn’t the DK1 have 60hz? DK2 has 75hz. Not much difference there.
Aug 16, 2016 at 7:43am #110259In reply to: Performance/Quality Tweaking with Custom Resolutions
sponge101ParticipantThe highest I could go is 2048×1536 while maintaining that 4:3. Tried 3200×2400-4:3 and 2560×2048-5:4, but they didn’t show in the setting (wish I could increase resolution even further). Also tried inputing 2 in the Oculus pixel density tool and I think there’s a difference but not sure to be honest.
As long as I can maintain reasonable fps I would gladly increase resolution with tradeoff in performance. Though the 6700koc and 1080oc are holding up very well. Only when I’m doing something crazy is there a noticeable temporary stutter.

in forum Technical Support
sponge101ParticipantJust started testing the game but when I enter the vault there’s a pixelated shadow emanating from faces of people and objects that light is shinning against. Moreover, with G3D there’s a blury smear from everything when I’m moving. Probably normal but just wanted to report it.
Just want to say how grateful I am for Vorpx. Amazing piece of software.
Aug 1, 2016 at 9:16pm #105212In reply to: New to VorpX (games I'd like to get working)
RalfKeymasterFor games that don’t have HUD scaling available in the vorpX ingame menu, using EdgePeek is the weapon of choice in regard to invisible HUD elements in the corners. EdgePeek can be enabled by pressing the mousewheel.
I’m not really sure what you mean by floating, but if it’s related to head tracking, try to adjust the head tracking sensitivity in the ingame menu. That needs to be done once per game.
The ambient color bars that are visible in some games can be removed by settings the ImageZoom to 1.0 and the Aspect Ratio Mode to “Pixel 1:1” (the default). Both settings are on the image page of the ingame menu. Be aware that this may require a higher game FOV, scaling the image up reduces the perceived FOV.
If you know which game/3d engine an usupported game is based on and there is a profile from a game based on the same engine available, you can try to make a copy of this profile in the config app and assign your game to it. No guarantee that this will work, but it’s always worth a try.
Jul 29, 2016 at 8:08pm #105151
RalfKeymasterIf you set image zoom to 1.0 and use the “Pixel 1:1” aspect ratio mode (both on the image page of the ingame menu), the headset screen is always filled completely both horizontically and vertically.
You will need to use a higher FOV though compared to a scaled down image since scaling it up reduces the effective FOV.
