So the next question is – how do I open the VorpX menu?
My problem is that I can’t use the keyboard in my standing/room-scale space.
I wonder if some things can be done with Voice Attack. Or maybe completely remapping the right touchpad because I want to block this way of rotation.
I did manage to run DirectVR once and I had a problem where during a dialogue my view slowly shifted down to the ground and stayed like this for the whole time I was speaking to the NPC.

Speaking of this, can I trigger the DirectVR scan and the pov re centering via the controllers?

Direct VR is rotation+position only for Oblivion. for the FOV open the console (“~” key) and enter “fov 111” (without the quotes) for the default ImageZoom of 1.0.

The next vorpX version will do this automatically with a perfectly calculated FOV after the DirectVR scan has been run and also solves a pesky issue with the FOV being reset in Oblivion every time you change to third person view inadvertantly with the mouse wheel. Also shadows and light fx shown at wrong depth have been fixed.

Since the game plays a lot more comfortable without these glitches, I would recommend to wait a little longer. I still don’t have a release date yet though.

No Direct VR for Morrowind currently.

So I started on the DLC content of New Vegas since I am nearing the end game and am contemplating playing my next non VR game in VR using the amazing VorpX. With New Vegas I’ve effectively been playing the game in VR from start to finish.

I am thinking of playing Oblivion next. I don’t want to play Skyrim or Fallout 4 since these will have native VR modes in the near future. I want to focus on gems that will unlikely have native VR support in the future, like New Vegas which VorpX helps make it feel like a native VR game especially when played standing.

If I recall correctly, Direct VR doesn’t support Oblivion. This means there won’t be positional headtracking right? And rotational head tracking would simply be emulating the mouse? What should I expect when trying to play Oblivion in VorpX vs my present experience with New Vegas where I rely on Direct VR?

Is this bug only with DirectVR or geometric 3D? If so it would be easy to just turn off for these short portions of the game.

Just to add to running old Skyrim in VR at 4k…if I reduce the settings in the Skyrim launcher to medium…I can run old Skyrim in VR at 4k, Geomitry=on, DirectVR=on with nearly consistent 45fps outside. The fps drops to about 38 or so once in a while but is nearly not noticeable visually and mostly stays at 45fps. Plus…since I have a cast iron stomach (been gaming since early 80’s…when it all started) I don’t ever feel the sickness.

So upgrading to a 1080Ti will probably suit your needs Tiggerdyret!!! As long as you have the CPU and SSD to handle the rest.

Tiggerdyret, if I play old Skyrim in VR…I run it at 2560×1440 (even tho Ralf recommends 4:3) with no visual gliches that I can see. Also, I run it at High settings, AA=2, AF=16 in Skyrim menu (no difference in visual quality going to Ultra in VR and loose a bit of FPS if doing so). I have SS set at 1.5 for Rift. With all this I get consistant 45fps with Geometry=on, DirectVR=on. Running 1080Ti slightly boosted but don’t really need to…I just have it set that way as standard for my overall system. I also have about 13 visual mods going in old Skyrim too.

As I am also spoiled with 4k…it’s kind of hard to go back to lesser resolution…even with these settings on the Rift…but only for Skyrim for some reason. The AA in old Skyrim doesn’t really do much other than suck up FPS when set for use in Vorpx. Thus the reason for only setting it at AA=2. No visual difference going to 4 or 8 on my system in VR. I can run old skyrim in VR at 4k resolution but the FPS falls below 45fps to often and not worth it. It does look quite a bit better than 2560×1440 though. The jaggies are nearly not there in 4k but are still there in 2560×1440.

Oh yes, I agree about the SSD. It makes a difference in loading stuff big time…

Just to expand. I made a guide for New Vegas a few months back. It was before DirectVR, but I honestly always try to setup my games to run without, since it is kinda unstable in many games.
My guide does have a lot of mod suggestions and fixes with or withou DirectVR:

New Vegas in Vorpx looks and plays gloriously. Here is how to set it up.

Minecraft is a good example of a game that a modern studio wouldn’t touch but has had the longevity and engagement that surpasses your Fallouts and your GTAs.

Indeed. Minecraft is amazing in VR with the Vivecraft mod too.

I also disagree. I had some incredible VR gaming experiences in Star Trek: Bridge Crew, Ironwolf VR, Bullets and More, Pavlov, Onward, Vivecraft, Raw Data, Climbey, The Art of Fight, Quell 4D, Warpaint, Elite, and Battlezone.

On the other hand I’ve also been having a blast playing New Vegas for 95 hours and counting using VorpX. I love both VorpX and native VR games.

I think you can and should enjoy all the options 🙂

I am curious. Are you playing New Vegas in Cinema / Geometry mode or in full directVR mode?

I play New Vegas in full Direct VR mode with a wireless Xbox One controller standing. It feels very immersive even with a gamepad. Ralf also suggested to me to try it using the Vive controllers instead of the gamepad because it frees up your hands.

It really feels great to be able to turn with your body and look around with your head. With standing mode you basically take full advantage of the rotational and positional tracking.

I am running 17.2.3. I don’t really consider it a big deal to do a DirectVR scan before enabling the xbox controller in new vegas, but I will try doing a reset to see if that fixes it.

I have managed to get a pretty satisfactory standing mode setup for new vegas. Previously I played it sitting with a mouse and keyboard. Playing it standing is a step above that in immersion, and just slightly below full motion controlled experience.

vorpX normally switches to the native X-Box controller mode after Direct VR is enabled.

The whole reason for the gamepad emulation is that in some games, Fallout games included, mouse and gamepad can’t be used together. That’s not issue with Direct VR though since in that case vorpX doesn’t need the mouse for headtracking and consequently the gamepad emulation is disabled.

With one exception: if Touch/Vive controllers are detected and set to keyboard/mouse mode, this auto disabling gets overridden. Maybe that is happening for you.

Please try to either disable Vive/Touch controllers or set them to X-Box controller mode in the vorpX menu. This way Direct VR should always disable the gamepad emulation, regardless whether Touch/Vive controllers are detected or not.

Quite an odd issue you are experiencing though: did you maybe change the vorpX menu shortcut to the same key that you have bound to crouch in New Vegas? Just a guess, but sounds like the most reasonable explanation to me.

I tried disabling the Vive/Touch controllers completely, but VorpX stuff still pops up when I press certain buttons in my xbox controller.

Also just for an FYI I need to do the DirectVR scan first before enabling Xbox support within New Vegas otherwise the scan will fail.

I didn’t change the VorpX menu shortcuts at all.

Do you have any thoughts like Valve’s latest async reprojection updates? Supposedly the async updates help with some Oculus games like Lone Echo if you use Revive (which I do also use), but I found that it seems to cause more reprojection with VorpX at least in New Vegas than before.

How do I completely disable the Xbox controller in VorpX? After pressing delete and setting controller emulation to none, my Xbox controller is still being used by VorpX to do things I do not want. I am having an issue where when I crouch in New Vegas, VorpX constant pops up the virtual button mapping menu and beeps. It’s pretty distracting.

I want to completely disable the Xbox controller in VorpX and use New Vegas’s own Xbox implementation since it doesn’t seem to conflict with the DirectVR head tracking.

Also has anyone noticed a change in performance of VorpX after SteamVR changed how it handles Async reprojection? It seems like it’s a bit worse than before. I’m noticing more reprojection and it seems most visible when my weapon is out.

I din’t run it in DirectVR, because it crashed and the scan didn’t work in some areas, which made it pretty unreliable. I ended up using it without DirectVR after a few levels. Make a scan in the first area and turn DirectVR off and on, then mess with the settings of normal mode and compare with DirectVR mode until it is as close as you can get it. I don’t have my settings anymore, but it wasn’t hard to get it almost right.

Sorry if this has been answered already, but I’m trying to play Skyrim with an XBox controller. When the game starts, edge peek is bound to the right thumb stick, which I like. The problem is that once I do a DirectVR scan, the bindings are reset to default Skyrim bindings (no edge peek). If someone could tell me how to get edge peek on my controller after a DirectVR scan, it would be greatly appreciated.
