Topic: Black mesa drop fps
in forum Technical Support
skynet24xParticipantHello, I tried to play black-and-white mesa in the mode of cinema mode and geometry = 1 and a rounded screen. The game looks beautiful and the immersion effect is present, but in the game there are moments of FPS drawdown to 40-50. If such moments pass without BP then drawdowns go up to 100 fps. I understand correctly that the workload is loading the video card so much that any amount of FPS when playing on the monitor will be approximately equal to the number of FPS divided by 2 in virtual reality glasses? Or is it possible to make a setting somewhere in the workspace so as not to lose so much in the FPS?

RalfKeymasterThe game is not officially supported. If you want to create a user profile for it and are certain it’s an OpenGL program try to take some other OpenGL profile as a base for a new one (e.g. Quake 1-4, Amnesia, Jedi Knight II). Try more than one if the first one doesn’t do the trick right away. Be aware though that OpenGL G3D support in vorpX is limited to fairly old (fixed function) OpenGL versions.
A much better way to experience (a re-imagined) Half-Life 1 is Black Mesa: Source though, which you can purchase on Steam. Basically Half-Life with way better graphics. For the Steam version of Black Mesa: Source a fully featured DirectVR profile exists.
May 7, 2020 at 4:17am #194475In reply to: Tiny flicker
FATHERParticipantI’m getting this exact issue as well.
Black Mesa is running perfect in VR otherwise. But this random flickering every random interval ruins it.
The flicker shows a frame of what looks like frame data of the camera’s view + 90 degrees to the left, basically something the player view would never be able to see under normal conditions. What the hell is it doing XD
1440p set in-game, in vorpX, and the Win10 desktop. No competing processes, steam overlay off, av disabled, Xbox overlay disabled, fresh system install…
Anything special I could try?

HelloJoeParticipantCan someone explain to me why this happens?
In Half-Life 2, I can use my x360 gamepad to control the Vorpx settings menu, i.e. use thumbstick for Edgepeek & open vorpx menu etc..
In Black Mesa, I can play the game with the gamepad but the Vorpx menu doesn’t recognize my controller inputs. I have to use the keyboard to open Vorpx menu, mouse wheel for edgepeak etc.. I just want to use my gamepad.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
RalfKeymasterBioshock: there are two flavors of positional tracking. The default positional tracking that is theoretically possible with every G3D game and DirectVR positional tracking. If available DirectVR positional tracking is a bit better since it changes the position of the actual game camera, but if you encounter any issues with it, just disable it on the DirectVR page of the vorpX menu. The default G3D pos tracking will still be available in Bioshock.
What you could also try is re-running the scanner if that happens. In Unreal Engine 3 games the memory addresses for DirectVR can become invalid over time. Usually not within the same level, but maybe sometimes they still do, can’t rule that out entirely.
Black Mesa res: the resolution isn’t set by DirectVR in this game, hence resetting the profile doesn’t change it. You have to set it manually.
slydog43ParticipantFound something else that doesn’t seem right. I have been playing lots of different games with vorpx recently and went back to black mesa this morning. I had the profile set up to change resolution to 1920p and an AHK script to change my desktop to 1920p before launching bms (since you can’t change resolution in game). This seemed to work fine for a while. Something got screwed up and bms would crash upon launching. So I figured I would start over, so I reset the profile, reset settings under troubleshooting reset computer and started again. This time bms did load up and I was in VR mode, but when I pulled up the profile settings, I see that 1920p was still selected. I thought it would go back to 1280p (I thought that was the default). Am I doing something wrong.
I also saw in some other threads (bioshock) that positional tracking was not working right. I too see that sometimes, meaning when I move my head nothing really happens in the vr world. I then turn off posiitonal tracking and strangly the world seems to move when I move my head. Isn’t that the opposite of what is suppose to happen. Thanks
Mar 24, 2020 at 8:24pm #193406In reply to: Did anyone play Half-Life Alyx yet?
slydog43ParticipantI’m so glad you posted this ralf. I have play 2 or 3 hours so far of Alyx and have enjoyed it mostly. I started out playing on a brand new Index that I was lucky enough to pick up when it went on sale last time, but I really hate the controllers. I really don’t like how to grab and crush things with force, I really prefer the Oculus Touch controller and their grab button. I also hate the touch pad area on the Index Controllers for switching weapons (well I guess its alright).
I rebuilt a PC just for this release and ran into all sorts of issues and I’m a super computer nerd with over 40 computers in my house (3 VR stations even). After having issues with Oculus Home loading up because of HMD not detected, I uninstalled Oculus software and reinstalled everything (took like 12 hours). Played 1 hour with the Index and then switched to the Rift-S. The visuals are truely amazing and the best that I have ever seen, but looks is not everything as I still play old 1980’s arcade games :)
I too have thought that I really did prefer VorpX games like Half-Life 2, Black Mesa (awesome), Bioshock, Borderlands, etc. I like to sit down on a swivel chair and it just works sooo well now.
Thanks Ralf for your incredible product and can’t wait for the next release. Hope that Doom Eternal could be possible at some point in the future.Mar 23, 2020 at 5:45pm #193394In reply to: positional tracking keep failing
steph12Participanti have a htc vive gen 1 and 2 lighthouses, i’ll try to set them up differently, thank you for this advice :)
my issue with positional tracking is in all games now, black mesa, skyrim, i think there is something in my setup broken or not set up right, i’ll try to fix it.
i also ordered a valve index but i wont have it anytime soon specially in that corona period :/
i noticed since months that one of my light house makes weird noise, still solid green light tho but i’m not sure if it’s working 100%.

RalfKeymasterYou don’t have to wait for the next update to play Black Mesa. Only their new DX11/9 hybrid menu doesn’t work currently, the game itself works just fine. You can work around that by adding -oldgameui to the game’s launch options in Steam, which brings back the original DX9 menu.

AaronclsParticipantI agree that G3D is usually the best rendition but do not underestimate a proper Z3D implementation!
As everyone else, since my early 3D days using Tridef for flatscreens I would always prefer G3D and get a bit bummed out if it didn’t work well or at all.
However, I have noticed that a few z3D (Z-normal mostly) profiles actually look pretty damn good! And not only that, the performance gains, the correct shadow alignment and far-near controls makes Z3D a worthy contender.
The only issue that could be a deal breaker is the ghosting or outlined blur for near plane objects. However this can mitigated but scaling down the main 3D slider.
In any case, here is my best performance G3D so far:
– og Bioshock 1
– Black Mesa
– Half-Life 2
– Resident Evil 6 (cloud)
– Resident Evil 7
– Resident Evil Revelations
– Dark Souls 2 SotfS
– Bayonetta

RalfKeymasterThere is an official profile since ages. If you don‘t have a profile named ‚Black Mesa: Source‘ in your local profiles list, try either a factory reset or redownload it from the cloud.
Mar 16, 2020 at 12:05pm #193268In reply to: Black Mesa
RalfKeymasterThe scale is spot on per default (or VERY close to it). If you believe that may not be the case for you, changing the 3D-Strength is what you want to do. Just be aware that if you consider 1.0 (or VERY close to it) being wrong, objectively it’s your impression that is wrong. Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh, I just want to make it as clear as possible.
All you have to do to play Black Mesa is setting a 4:3 resolution and running the DirectVR scan. There is nothing to tweak here. I understand how tempting tweaking is for some of you, but with full DirectVR profiles like this one all you can really achieve by tweaking is screwing things up.
Ground height: monitor games are made to look good on a monitor, thus the camera typically isn’t placed with VR in mind. You can alleviate that with the camera height modifier option in the vorpX menu. Be careful though, depending on the game that may cause other glitches, e.g. when aiming down the sights.
Mar 13, 2020 at 9:24pm #193199In reply to: Black Mesa
slydog43ParticipantNot sure why it wasn’t working for me the other day, but I have it working fine now with a little AHK script that changes the windows desktop to 2560×1920 resolution and I also changed the BMS profile to not change Resolution. I can then run Black Mesa in a very nice looking resolution. Half Life has never looked so good.

Topic: Black mesa drop fps
Hello, I tried to play black-and-white mesa in the mode of cinema mode and geometry = 1 and a rounded screen.
Can someone explain to me why this happens?
In Half-Life 2, I can use my x360 gamepad to control the Vorpx settings menu, i.e. use thumbstick for Edgepeek & open vorpx menu etc..
In Black Mesa, I can play the game with the gamepad but the Vorpx menu doesn’t recognize my controller inputs. I have to use the keyboard to open Vorpx menu, mouse wheel for edgepeak etc.. I just want to use my gamepad.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
