Are you using Windows 10 to play? I have the GOTY edition but am unable to get it working with Vorpx due to the d3dx9.dll fix for getting Fallout 3 at least working with Windows 10.
I had to come give further props to Ralph and vorpX. I’ve used it for a long time, ever since I got my DK2 when those first shipped. It’s always worked, and been a great tool to enjoy non VR games in VR. I got a Vive now and am going over all my favorites to see how they play now. I tried the direct VR in a few games and it worked great as an easy solution to just tweaking settings like the old days. But when I ran it in Fallout 3 I about fainted.
I have to say vorpX has really, really knocked my socks off yet again. After running the direct scan in Fallout 3, it just feels like your actually transported into the wasteland. The FOV gets set, the position locates you and bam your there… Its damn near perfect 1 to 1. Crystal clear image, the best image quality in an injected game I have ever seen. The vanilla textures even look good in VR! They’re muddy up close but the clarity of the image and the fact that parallax textures now work in 3D and you got a feast for the eyes.
The room scale works so good I’m actually stunned. You can use cover, peek around corners, walk around and browse and loot. Its unreal how good they got it working for this game. This feels as close to a native game as your going to get. Sure there are some issues with UI and CTDs but that’s more a Fallout issue then vorpx. Really need to patch the memory and get some other UI mods to see if I cant solve these few issues..
I was so floored by how amazing it worked that I ended up playing until 5am two nights in a row. I haven’t even tested out mods because I cant resist popping back in to Fallout 3 VR. Its just so damn good, its freaky…. Really guys, if your half a Fallout fan you must try It in Direct VR. Even if you think you’ve played it with older vorpx versions, try it now, you wont be disappointed.
I am curious and want to buy a new Pimax 5k or 8k headset, as a headset to experiment with higher resolutions and field of vision, but I would like to know Ralf’s views on these things, especially regarding their use with Vorpx.
Do you think it could work or be feasible to work with some regular games with Vorpx?
It seems that Pimax will also be able to work with SteamVR, but I am concerned about some other things, such as not knowing how far it might be possible to make video games work at fov values higher than usual today like DK2/ CV1/ HTC.
I would love to have a unit to experiment with Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Oblivion, Skyrim e.t.c. with some mods, but I still have no guarantee to think that this may be possible, for now …
Sorry for the necro, but I haven’t found much more about this and I think it would be an excellent feature, (and something Fallout 4 VR is planning to implement in a couple months.)
Ideally, holding the left trigger would allow for touch aiming as well as the in-game aiming/zooming. So as you held the index-finger trigger on the left controller (right mouse button,) you’d bring up the right controller to aim at the screen as the character brings up the gun to aim down the sights.
It looks like for Fallout 4 VR there isn’t even an aim mode, instead the left trigger teleports the player forward, etc.
I was seeing some internet posts that state Vive controllers could be mapped and used with vorpX in an upcoming release. Has this been done? Say for a Fallout game can the Vive wand be used to move Left/Right/Forward/Reverse? I was thinking of buying vorpX but I can’t really use it if only keyboard / gamepad is the only supported option. I know different games work differently, just wondering in general has this interface been somewhat implemented. Thanks for your time..
So, i tried various settings right now.
My direct VR FOV looks to be 128.5 – YES, between 128 and 129.
But of Course i can only enter whole Digit numbers in my Fallout 4 tweaker by Bilago.
Anyway, i doubt that the flicker goes away with direct VR active, because what i experience is exactly what Ralf said, a quick altering of the FOV of direct VR. so this will not be cured by the “right” FOV values.
I play without direct VR.
Please Ralf, what is your opinion?
Thank you,
Werner
I do have this known issue of quick altering FOV when zooming or in 3rd person view with Direct VR enabled. If i disable Direct VR (pressing Alt-B) then it works fine.
My question to Ralph:
– is there any benefit to run direct VR scan at all then in Fallout 4?
– any chance to fix or turn off the FOV altering of Direct VR?
Thank you for your time,
Werner
Is that Resident Evil 7 glitch as bad as people in this thread say it is? I’ve seen a lot of people praising RE7 in VorpX and comparing it favourably to the PSVR version. None of them even mentioned this glitch.
Like with Fallout 4 and Skyrim I’m holding out for a PC native VR release since I think it’ll be likely released to PCVR once PSVR exclusivity runs out and have mainly been focusing on using VorpX on games that we’ll never see a native VR port of like Fallout New Vegas.
ref flickering. I do have flickering in G3D as well.I found it got worse using direct vr.So u should try to set fov manually with console command, that almost eliminates all flickering. OT. I had some strange flickering in Fallout4 if i switch to third person mode when aiming.. that was due to vorpx tried to adjust fov back to first person fov even i was in third person mode. Its all related to fov play with that and u might find a sweet spot.
I am using ESet Internet Security but already tried disabling it as well as included it in the excluded programs in VorpX.
Also I had already setup Fallout 4 according to a guide on youtube, made by Stereo3DProductions, which included setting everything to medium apart from textures and disabling all the special effects at the bottom. I had done this before I posted here.
I will try your other suggestion on the Geometry vs Z3D in a bit.
By the way is there a manual available explaining all the in-game menu options of VorpX, as there does not seem to be any tooltips?
If you use any other anti virus than Windows Defender, please check wehther disabling it helps. vorpX runs a watcher process that constantly checks for newly started programs. Should’t use more than ~5% CPU normally, but some virus scanners may interfere with that.
If you can’t solve the issue, there still isn’t much to be concerned about: as soon as a game is hooked, the watcher stops watching and doesn’t use any CPU resources anymore.
Fallout 4: make sure to use the medium quality preset in the FO4 launcher. With a GTX1080 that should yield a reasonable framerate with Geometry 3D. Fallout 4 is a tough one though performance wise. Might still make sense to switch between Z3D for the outside world and G3D for interiors. The default shortcut for that is ALT+K.
Hi, I am trying to use VorpX with Fallout 4 and no matter what I tried I could not get a high enough FPS to play normally. I first thought to try different settings and use lower resolutions but nothing seems to change the low FPS (around 30 – 35 FPS).
Within VorpX I excluded a lot of the processes and services and made sure that I run with only necessary services but again no change.
I then saw that just having started VorpX consumes a lot of CPU power and I think this is why I get problems in game. Each of the two VorpX processes consumes between 25 – 30% of my processor power and that together with a idle processor use of around 20 – 25% means the CPU is running almost at limit (regularly around 84% to sometimes almost 97%). What can I do to get this under control because at the moment I can not use VorpX.
I am using a PiMax 4k with the latest driver version for it, on a computer with GTX 1080, Intel I5-3570K and Windows 10 Pro Version 1703.
Thank you very much in advance for any help.
Make sure to run Fallout 4 with a 16:9 or 16:10 resolution, those are the only aspect ratios really supported by the game. With a 4:3 aspect ratio (usually better for vorpX) the game boots up fine, but the UI gets messed up. Among other things that leads to the lockpicking screen being invisible. Not a vorpX issue, just the game only working correctly with widescreen resolutions.
If you still experience issues afterwards (e.g. the camera being misplaced on hacking terminals), disable the positional part of Direct VR in the vorpX menu. The normal positional tracking will still be available.
You can get a quite immersive experince out of cinema mode by choosing he “None” or “Ambience” scene and then moving the screen closer to you. That is quite useful for racing games where vorpX cannot change the ingame camera with head tracking.
Since I only mentioned my top three I’d like to add TES:Oblivion to the mix. It’s probably my number 2 and IMO is much better than Skyrim and Fallout because of perfect hand models. It runs great even with 4k, Unique Landscapes mod and TES4LodGen on ultimate, which makes it look even better than Skyrim. I do admit I have a GTX 1080 TI, but I honestly think the game is bottled-necked by either the cpu or the engine itself and not the GPU. This is probably my favorite Bethesda game of all time and I’m happy to say it also runs just as good as Fallout NV and much better than Skyrim and Fallout 4 with Vorpx. If you liked SKyrim and never played Oblivion than there has never been a better time than now!
Mods that enhance VR (all can be found on http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion):
– FOV Modifier (A must! For a constant FOV)
– Oblivion Stutter Remover (Must for smooth framerate)
– Enhanced Camera
– Dot Crosshair
– Darnified UI
– Loot Menu (tweak the mod’s ini to fit inside the vorpx screen)
– Hud and Camera Toggler (set hotkey in mod’s ini file. Google “oblivion key code” to find out the codes for different keys)
Look through this list for Gameplay mods:

And this for graphic mods (be conservative):

Be warned Oblivion is a crash fest compared to Skyrim, so don’t through to many big overhauls into the mix all at once!
I always find it difficult to name top favorites, be it games, movies, books, music or whatever. There’s something good to be found in so many things.
That said, what I recently enjoyed immensly was the first hour of Half-Life 2 Episode 1. Even more than the rest of the game this first hour is an almost perfect for VR mix of shooting and (easy) physics puzzles. If I was to make a VR first person shooter, it would be exactly such a mix of adrenaline driven sequences and puzzles to cool down in between. Must! be played standing with motion controllers.
Then there is of course Fallout 3, I just love the mood and atmosphere of this game which is amplified by VR ten fold. If you like other Bethesda RPGs more, they are also always a good choice, of course.
Next would be Bioshock 1, again mainly because I love the mood and atmosphere of the game. Exploring this beautiful Art-Deco underwater world is breathtaking in VR even if you already played through it on the monitor.
As number four I would name one that generally is considered a mediocre run of the mill shooter, but personally I find it surprisingly good, at least in VR: Aliens: Colonial Marines. If you like Sci-Fi themed games or Alien in particular, give it a try.
And last but not least there is one that isn’t actually officially supported for various reasons: Descent/Descent II with the fan-made OpenGL port D2X-XL. Probably my all-time favorite shooter game. Far from what one would consider perfect with vorpX, but if you are fond of 6DOF action and don’t mind the extremely outdated graphics, I can still recommend it. That’s a highly subjective assessment though, I’d almost be surprised if anyone else would agree. So be warned.
Honorary mention: Resident Evil 7. I really wanted to play this one and it’s great, but in the end actually too scary for me. I chickened out before the introduction level was over… VR horror isn’t for everyone, I guess.
