Hi Ralph finally I understand now I wasnt using the Half-Life 2 video options I have now and its working now Thanks

@ FrostWarrior: I’m not really sure whether I understand the issue. If you created a custom resolution of, let’s say 2240×1680, and select this resolution in the Half-Life 2 video options, you are set.

All you need to do is making the game run with your added custom resolution. In case of Half-Life 2 that has to be done in the game options.

In other supported games you can do do it from the vorpX menu, which is what moadepht is refering to. Doesn’t work for HL2 though.

I’m getting horrible double vision in my pimax 5k+ I see this listed in the trouble shooting guide
    “Game Resolutions

In contrast to other headsets 4:3 resolutions usually aren’t best for Pimax 5K/8K. Unless 4:3 is required for a game to work correctly (mostly Half-Life2, Portal 2 and other Source engine games), 16:10 seems to be a perfect fit for the FOV setting recommended above.

Try 1680×1050, 1920×1200 or 2304×1440. Depending on the game and your GPU these should usually provide a decent quality/performance ratio. You can also use similar 16:9 resolutions.”

How do I make these aspect ratios and resolutions? I don’t see anything on the in game vorpx menu to do that? Forgive my vorpx noobishness.

vorpX now officially supports Pimax 5K/8K headsets (vorpX 19.1.1 and above). For the best experience please check these recommendations.

    Brainwarp Settings

    • Compatible with parallel projections: has to be ON.
    • Compatible With Vive Only Game: has to be OFF.
    • Turn on smart smoothing: should be OFF to avoid judder
    • Refresh Rate: 72Hz: not necessary, but reduces CPU/GPU usage.
    • Field of View: Small: better performance, still provides very decent ~130° horizontal FOV, also helps with games that have a hardcoded FOV limit

    Render Quality Settings

    • PiTool: Rendering Quality: 1.0 (default)
    • SteamVR: Video: Manual Override: 50%

These settings produce a large enough headset render target to play games at common vorpX resolutions.

The above was tested with a 5K+, for Pimax 8K SteamVR quality at 50% might already be overkill. Try 30-40% instead.

    Game Resolutions

In contrast to other headsets 4:3 resolutions usually aren’t best for Pimax 5K/8K. Unless 4:3 is required for a game to work correctly (mostly Half-Life2, Portal 2 and other Source engine games), 16:10 seems to be a perfect fit for the FOV setting recommended above.

Try 1680×1050, 1920×1200 or 2304×1440. Depending on the game and your GPU these should usually provide a decent quality/performance ratio. You can also use similar 16:9 resolutions.

    Conclusion

With these settings older games can be run on your Pimax even on a midrange GPU like a GTX 1070/2060 in Geometry 3D at 1200p resolutions. For more demanding games and/or higher game resolutions a faster GPU is highly recommended.

Potential performance issues like judder can be addressed by reducing a game’s resolution and/or graphics details or by switching to Z3D in vorpX, which is a lot faster than G3D.

Hi Ralf, I have written earlier but no answer yet. Big thank you for this program.

All games work perfectly Witcher3, Mass Effect’s and other.

But I won’t play in HL2,ep1,ep2, black mesa source and I read on the forum what other people can play in it but not me. What is my problem?

Vorpx is injected and on the monitor display – I see logo Vorpx but in Oculus headset I see only logo HL2 and text “loading”. Cursor follow by my headset.

I use a cloud setting. Trying with steam VR and without – with steam and no steam – hl2 update, hl2 classic, ep1, ep2, black mesa – result only one – “loading” text and game logo in the white room in Oculus headset.

Windowed, fullscreen, 4:3, 16:9 and other resolution… no matter.

Windows 7 x64. Oculus Rift CV1. Last update for Oculus and Vorpx.

Please help me if you can, I’m waiting for your answer. Thank you, regards.

I have a Pimax 5K Plus I am trying to get Half-Life 2 to work with Vorpx I have tried the default HalfLife2 profile settings and an online profile settings from the Vorpx cloud but the image renders wrong on the VR HMD it looks like a mirror image I see double of everything in the game although the head tracking works perfectly. Is there any way of getting this game to render properly on the 5K Plus?

I’ve just finished Portal 2 using vorpX and that’s one of the best VR experience I ever had !!!

I have also finished the Half-Life 2 trilogy, and though it was great (especially the episode 2 which was really good in VR), Portal 2 is just spectacular.

I really can’t understand why Portal 2 hasn’t been released officially in VR, as the game is SO good playing that way (oh maybe because VR games are primarily made for people who can’t stand VR and they would puke jumping everywhere in Portal ?)

Anyway thank you so much for that awesome experience :)

Try to run the game windowed if you are running it fullscreen currently or vice versa. A 4:3 resolutions is mandatory for Half-Life 2, otherwise you will encounter image flickering.

Make sure not to set a resolution that your monitor cannot display, doing so may cause a black screen.

Check the “Custom Resolutions” section in the vorpX help to add resolutions to your PC that it cannot display normally. That’s a great way to play less demanding games like HL2 in high resolutions like 1920×1440 or above.

The first time I started half-life 2 update, I had a hell of a time and the screen in my vive would stay black with a green outline around the upper left eye. I would still be able to hear the menu sounds and change vorpx settings, but there was no image present. I tried downloading a new cloud profile, and the game worked x2 until I messed around with some resolution settings. I am now back to square one. Black screen regardless of the profile, reset profile, factory reset vorpx, reinstalled hl2, nothing. Same problem with the black screen. I do not know what else to try. I did notice, after setting the game back to wide screen 2k without vorpx, when I do open the game it tries to set a 4:3 ratio. Any suggestions on how I can tweak this issue?

45fps as game fps is perfectly right with Fluid Sync enabled in vorpX. If you are sensitive to motion sickness, you might want to stick to older games for now that can reach full 90fps and ideally also have DirectVR head tracking for 100% perfect head tracking with as little latency as possible.

Half-Life 2 that dellrifter suggested above fits into both categories, you will find others in this list.

I am not the most advanced pc user myself but i was able to setup vorpX again fairly easily. The first game i tried with vorpX was Half-life 2 / Orange Box episodes & Portal etc…Fantastic!! Simply brilliant Direct vr support. The sharpening tool among other tools etc with 4x msaa, 4.3 ratio, 1600×1200 res, oculus touch was bang on for me… vorpX in game tools work really well. This is true full VR without a doubt and i am thoroughly impressed. I tried vorpx a few years back and did’t care for it…far to difficult to setup for someone like myself and Firewatch recently did not test well but Direct Vr is amazing overall so far. 2018 Vorpx update is a major game changer. I am Just in my first week of testing vorpx after a long time so i will need to explore many more Direct vr adventures. Great job sticking with it Ralf my small investment is paying off it appears! Cheers & Thank you!

If you can’t see the crosshair, try to experiment with the HUD scaling factor (image page of the vorpX ingame menu).

Also make sure to enable MSAA in the game’s menu. That has a greater effect on image quality than raising the resolution.

The game resolution isn’t mapped 1:1 to the headset’s screen resolution since the VR runtime warps the image to account for lens distortion. You can go as high as your PC allows performance wise, just make sure to use *exactly* 4:3 for all Source 2 engine games like indicated by the vorpX message to avoid issues with the DirectVR FOV override.

If your PC can handle it, you could try 2880×2160 for example. For a game as old as Half-Life 2 that might work with a fast machine, but for newer games you will have to make compromises to maintain a decent framerate. Stereo rendering is computationally expensive.

Works fine here with “Half-Life 2: Update” from Steam directly, which MMOD seems to be based on. Unfortunately I can’t check mods for mods, sorry.

“Half-Life 2: Update” alone without MMOD already contains many of the changes of the additional MMOD, so you might want to give that a try.

The first few minutes after the train ride in Black Mesa are a common test case here. Last time I checked it there were no frame drops, with a decent GPU you should have no problems normally. Might make sense to set the game’s graphics options to default and try with and without antialising.

Never tried Half-Life Source, a clear oversight. Probably not too hard to get it working with full DirectVR support. I’ll look into it.

BTW: Also check HL2 Episode 1. The first hour or so in the Combine fortress is a mix of action and puzzles so perfect for VR that I consider it one of the best VR experiences to have, with or without vorpX. Make sure to play it standing with Touch/Vive wands.

I’m noticing a bit of an impediment to using VorpX I’m hoping can be addressed either now or in the future. In multiple games now, (I tested Assassin’s Creed Unity, Half-Life 2, Serious Sam), I’m finding the maximum 3D strength (5.0) to still be a tad too flat for me. If I use the FOV enhancement tool in addition to that, that can make the depth look acceptable for me, however that invariably causes errors on the side of the screens, so I try to avoid it. In Source games, I can manually adjust the FOV to be higher, but then everything looks tinier. The ideal solution would to be increase the 3D strength / scale some more.

Is there a way I can hack in going beyond 5.0 for the 3D strength value? I feel like something like 6 or 7 would be perfect for me.

For what it’s worth, I’m playing in Cinema mode with Geometry rendering.
