If the FOV still isn’t 100% correct, please either use a slightly higher value in the .ini or compensate for the rest in the vorpX ingame menu by adjusting the ImageZoom value (image page).

3D: Far Cry 4 “only” has Z-Buffer 3D, which provides less depth for foreground objects (not in the distance though), but is a lot faster than Geometry 3D, which renders everything twice.

For better image quality, please choose another resolution. The resolution that utilizes the max. amount of pixels on your headset would be 1920×1440. Just keep an eye on performance ([ALT][F]). You need to maintain 45fps+ at all times for a pleasent experience.

Thank you for the quick responce. I only have one profile and I have it set to FOV 1.81 already. but it looks weird still and crappy, like pixalated and still zoomed in a little to much. Hard to explain it doesn’t feel natural. And why is there no 3D or depth? Here are my settings below.

As said above images are pre-warped by the headset runtimes to counteract the lens distortion. Hence there is no 1:1 relationship between screen pixels and original image pixels like on your monitor across the whole image. 5:4/4:3 are good for vorpX’s timewarp (also mentioned above already). I can not get into details about this, sorry.

The suggested resolutions for quality (1600×1200/1920×1440) make sure that you get an image quality like with native games in vorpX. Since games with vorpX are often more demanding than native games you should use the performance recommendation (1280×1024) for newer games though.

If you want to learn about lens distortion and how to address it mathematically, I can recommend the below Wikipedia article, it’s a great starting point. In practice both Oculus and OpenVR runtime work different these days, but the article still provides you with the basics: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distortion_(optics)

Points of view.. my games work great.

I just tried deus ex human revolution. It’s working, but took more than one hour to optimize via vorps settings, in game. And synchronisation is bugging with xbox controler, I must play directly on my keyboard.

And must notice that the quality of the textures is lower than half life 2 (2004) in VR (that is not requiering vorpx). I feel like playing a game of 2000 and not 2011…

I don’t like playing Deus Ex on the Vive so much. Which means that in my opinion that’s not one of the best VR adaptation. To see what Vorpx can do you should try other games especially Dishonored, Outlast, Bioshock Infinte, Aliens Colonial Marines, The Darkness 2… These are the ones i have offering best perfomance and easy configurations. Visually, they look great. But you will need a powerful rig to play in VR while keeping high resolution (1920×1440) and in game detail. Then it’s all about teaking and the way each games performs in VR. Some games may not be perfect but still highly playable, i would say Max Payne 3 and Duke Nukem Forever for example. Basic configuration is similar in most games but then you will see there’s always one or other little thing that can be fixed or adjusted to achieve the best experience.

Dude i tried Human Revolution: Directors Cut and it’s seems to be working quite well. It was one of the first games i tried and i couldn’t configure it properly that time. For your control problems i suggest to partially override the controller: both sticks but not the button. Then fine tune the sensibility of each sticks until it works well and do the same with head tracking sensibility. About the visual performance, i am getting very good results with gtx970. I set the resolution to 1920×1440, Fov 110, asyncronous time warp deactivated, lowered in game details. Then do the usual things like adjust the 3d strenght and image zoom. I just played a bit, i need further testing but i would say that this way it was working very well, and the game looked and sounded better than ever in this new prospective. I hope the vr gameplay will keep up but everything seems good so far!

You should have basic to medium knowledge in regard to using Windows and your graphics driver control panel to follow these steps.

vorpX now has support for arbitrary game resolutions and aspect ratios. You can take advantage of this to substantially improve both performance and quality in many games. Here’s how to do it:

    1. Create a custom resolution with aspect ratio 8:9 in your graphics driver control panel. It can be anything, but a few options are: 1280×1440, 960×1080, 1600×1800, and 1920×2160. A good choice quality wise is 1280×1440 (if possible on your PC). If you are after performance, choose 960×1080. You can create the resolution in NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Catalyst/Vision Control Center. Not all the above resolutions are possible in every case. If you want to set a resolution higher than your monitor allows, you may need an externel tool like the Custom Resolution Utility.
    2. Select the newly created resolution in-game. If it does not show in your game’s resolution list, you may have to set it manually by editing an .ini file or the registry. Instructions can usually be found via Google.
    3. Depending on the game, you may now not need an FOV as high as before. If that is the case for your game, about 100 are enough now, instead of 120 before. As a pleasant side effect, this trick enables you to play titles that don’t permit FOV to be set above 100 degrees without having to resort to workarounds like using vorpX’s letterbox modes.
    4. You may need to adjust “Separation (3D-Strength)” to maintain a correct world scale in the game’s vorpX settings. For example from 1.0 to 0.6.

    That’s should be it!

Here’s how it works: in the Rift, each eye view must be rendered with a fixed aspect ratio of 8:9, since the 16:9 display is divided between the left and right eyes. Because traditional games don’t typically render at this aspect ratio, vorpX normally gets around this by setting the FOV to something really big (about 120-130 degrees). Although vorpX doesn’t render all of it in all cases in the end, this is still a very wasteful process, as all internal game calculations are done with this high FOV. By using a custom 8:9 resolution, we can ensure that the game only has to calculate what is really shown on the headset.

With special thanks to reddit user u/eVRydayVR.

    Hi Ralf,

Is this still a relevant post? Can I still use these steps to create a custom resolution? What if my desktop display isn’t capable of ratios like 8:9? It’s a cheap flatscreen TV.

I have a DK1 and Runtime 8. Today I tried to use vorpx like normal and I noticed it was starting very slowly. It eventually popped up a message that it was updating as a newer version was available. The update completed and I tried to start vorpx. I noticed it takes a long time for vorpx to start and I mean a long time. Like in the area of 2-3 mins from the time I click start to the time the program shows up in the tray. I then tried to run Dirt3 and a error message pops up saying vorpx failed to initialize Oculus. I tried portal2 which worked well before and the same error.

Are the DK1 and runtime 8 still supported? If no can I get a version that wont auto update until my CV1 arrives in a couple of months?

Here’s a bit of an odd issue: I’d really like to turn _on_ the Steam overlay while playing games with vorpX

I’m trying to play Fallout: New Vegas with vorpX using a Steam Controller, but to use the controller, Steam’s overlay needs to be running. Also, I’d like to be able to see its overlay (part of the Steam Big Picture Mode overlay) in-game, since the controller has its own menus for hotkeys and profile switching and whatnot.

For whatever reason, this actually works! … but only on the first run after a cold boot of my PC. I’ve been able to play the game with vorpX, Steam’s overlay, and the controller all working beautifully, at least long enough to start making a nice controller profile (even using touch menus within the headset). But, when I quit out of the game and start it again, the Steam overlay never loads and the controller doesn’t function properly. (vorpX injects fine in this case, however)

When the overlay fails to inject, I’ve noticed that I can — with the vorpX in-game menu — turn on “Direct Mode Show Original”. As soon as the game draws on my display, Steam’s overlay injects like it should have at the beginning. This gets controls working, but then Steam only draws its overlay on my actual monitor, and not in the headset.

I’m guessing that in the “cold boot” scenario Steam’s overlay injects itself before vorpX does, but in subsequent runs vorpX manages to inject itself first. Assuming that’s the case, is there some consistent way to make sure Steam injects its overlay before vorpX does (without having to reboot)?

My procedure for starting the game is roughly: 1) Boot 2) Start vorpX 3) Start Steam’s Big Picture Mode 4) Turn on Steam Controller 5) Start game with controller.

(If it helps, I’m using a Rift CV1 on Windows 10.)

Edit: I’ve also tried pausing the watcher before starting the game, letting it start up normally, and then resuming the watcher. Unfortunately this just seems to crash the game.

Reinstalling didn’t work, exactly the same issues, the only improvement is that adding -dx9 to bioshock 2 in Steam injected the game, but still got the unsupported message. I tried to apply bioshock 2 profile on the config menu and expected that it would make those changes, but apparently it didn’t so I did it manually. Tried also with and without admin rights to no avail. When I uninstalled I didn’t remove my licence info for obvious reasons, should I delete everything ayway?

One more thing, whenever I launch a game Steam tells me that it’s going to launch that game in virtual theater mode, yet it never does, and not even with the Vorpx driver off, I don’t know if that’s normal or not.

I’m sending the vorpX_troubleshoot.zip and see if that helps.

I had killed the 2 running processes using task manager not tray icon since I thought it was why DS wasn’t executing properly, but it was unrelated. So if not running it won’t even try to run when you launch games? (e.g. hasn’t connected itself at the registry level to execute first?) Also…didn’t even know there was a tray icon at first. Stupid W10 hiding icons unless you set them on…sheesh. Got it visible now.

Also figured out if it is running I can prevent it autostart with applications (watcher?) at the tray icon. The menu pick wording didn’t quite match what the help page said about enabling/disabling which confused me, but all is good now. Did notice it gets stuck with applications in a ‘can’t find HMD’ text notice loop if the Vive isn’t actually plugged in but watcher was on…prevented me actually getting the focus into Elite until I disabled the watcher and tried again. And of course might not actually use in Elite since it has its own (currently buggy) VR support built in.

Wanted to buy the second I saw Vive support but waiting on new glasses without bifocal lens to really use my Vive for evil <grin>) so might not test again for a week or so. Couldn’t resist the very first day but not worried if it take a few tries to get the right sequence. Probably start with 3rd person games first like Dead Space, Alan Wake, Witcher 2 and 3, to test my nausea response.

Thanks again for the program and look forward to much more time with it.

This is working nicely. Requires you set a custom resolution in Nvidia first (1350×1500 @60 Hz). The resolution does not need to be active. The game just needs to see that it exists.
You need to edit Darkmod.cfg to set the resolution and screen ratio or just copy this one:

As far as resolution goes, the vertical resolution works nicely for the FOV but the game cuts off the tracker. I tried the standard 1600×1200 etc, and you can see a little more FOV of the tracker. But still, the tracker is only half way showing in your FOV. It’s a great start but sadly, I still don’t see the game as playable given the tracker is an essential part of this game. Without it you can’t track the Alien and the suspense is lost.

Plus the lighting details mentioned in the first post really muck with your eyes. Looking in at pickup objects, the 3d effect splits the imagery. The lighting details are only shown in one eye. Imho, you can’t play with this 3D reconstruction for extended periods.

You can use any resolution you want. The higher, the better the image quality. 5:4/4:3 resolutions like 1280×1024 or 1600×1200 are usually the best choice. They don’t have to be added mnually to your graphics driver and also have some advantages regarding async timewarp.

Just keep an eye on performance while experimenting. Maintaining 45fps is important on the Vive. The optimal resolution in the end depends on the game and how fast your PC is, just like with normal gaming on a monitor.

Here’s the debug report. It’s trying to launch but doesn’t quite make it.
I tried a second time and did not get an error; but there was no picture, only sound. Main screen was black, Vive was grey.
Note that I had disabled the Oculus runtime, since it was also launching along with steamvr and that didn’t work out.
