RalfKeymaster@ dellrifter : Experimenting with different things in regard to sub 45fps performance will be this week’s work, so nothing I can say right now unfortunately.
Personally I wouldn’t base my decision for a headset on vorpX alone, but if that is a major consideration for you, currently I would recommend the Rift. That may change though if I get vorpX’s custom timewarp to work in a decent way on Vive. Currently it doesn’t really work as intended.
If that can be addressed this week one way or the other, both headsets will be on par in regard to vorpX. If not, the Rift will have a clear advantage in regard to vorpX.
BTW: It’s important to note that frame rates below 45fps aren’t really desirable on the Rift either, you should always aim for something in the 50-60fps range minimum if possible and rather sacrifice visual fidelity for that.
@ cyrilp : Yes, either through the vorpX desktop viewer with almost any video player, or better using MPC-HC or VLC, which both are are supported with a special high quality video player mode in vorpX. Side-by-side or over-under 3D content can be configured directly in vorpX regardless of the player you use.
@ Serzhas : I couldn’t agree more.

RalfKeymasterYou can watch 3D movies with vorpX. It has a special video player mode that works with VLC and MPC-HC and allows you watch almost any movie that these players support. Quality wise this is one of the best solutions to watch movies on your headset.

Unrelated: As a litle reminder for those who didn’t read the pages before: Vive support is not ready yet. As soon as it arrives, implememtation will begin.

RalfKeymasterDid you use the Game Optimizer in the config app for both programs? This sets the video output best suited for vorpX in both programs (if you want to do it manually: OpenGL in VLC and “Enhanced Video Renderer (custom presenter)” in MPC-HC).
For MPC-HC it’s also recommended to use a nightly build: https://nightly.mpc-hc.org.
Apart from that you can use many more video players with the vorpX desktop viewer. Not as good as the distinct video player mode quality wise, but without a direct side by side comparison you probably won’t notice a difference. The Windows 10 built in video app also works for example.

BadlywrapdkebabParticipantI’m looking for some help displaying 3d movies on my OR DK2 running Win10 and SDK0.8.
I’ve tried using vlc but have the following problems. Playing a file in VLC hooks up the HMD no problem but when I go to image settings and choose content type side-by-side the right eye shows the menu display while the left eye shows the video image. After that the menu seems to crash and I have to close VLC.
I’ve also tried MPC-HC (32bit and 64bit) but this just fails to hook up the HMD so I can’t go any further.
Both problems occur after applying the appropriate settings in the game optimiser.
Any suggestions or alternative media players would be appreciated.

RalfKeymastervorpX hooks automatically into VLC and MPC-HC, and also tries to hook into any other player that is based on Direct3D or OpenGL.
If you do not want it to do that, you can either exit vorpX before watching a video or select “Pause Watcher” in the tray icon’s right click menu, which will also prevent vorpX from hooking into any other program.

everix1992ParticipantI installed the latest x86 nightly build and everything is working for MPC-HC now. I also re-bound the in-game menu button for VLC and everything is work there.
On a separate note, great job on the Virtual Cinema Ralf. Picture quality is as good, if not better than the best VR video players out there and the Lounge environment looks really good!

ComgenieParticipantThe [Delete] button as hotkey does not work with VLC player for me, even if the window is correctly focussed. I’ve tested it multiple times. Changing it to [Num Lock] made it so that it works with my VLC Player. Maybe VLC Player already uses this hot key for something else and stops it from processing in vorpx?
An addition for when the Video Player feature does not work: The screen in VLC Player stays black, but the video plays (Audio is there). The Oculus Webcam light turns on, but the DK2 light stays amber.
I’ve not tried MPC-HC yet. But I’ve used the vorpX Game optimizer for VLC Player.

RalfKeymasterOne issue with windowed apps like video players is that it’s easy to loose mouse/keyboard focus on the window. Many of the “menu does not show” cases are probably related to that. Make sure to click into the player window, so that it has mouse focus.
MPC-HC: please make sure that ideally you download the latest nightlies from the MPC-HC website, it contains a small addition for vorpX that allows for better data exchange between both players.
For both VLC and MPC-HC please also make sure to apply the vorpX Game Optimizer setting in the vorpX config app.

RalfKeymaster@ Phil_Giordana_FCD : No. There even are gamepad presets for playback control. The video player help page in the vorpX help explains them. Maybe you could try MPC-HC if VLC doesn’t work for you.
@ Karlor : Thanks. Have fun!
Oct 5, 2015 at 6:32am #90016In reply to: Can you guys bring support to WinDVD 11 Pro!?!?!?!
RalfKeymasterThe next vorpX version will have special mediaplayer profiles for VLC and MPC-HC which probably are two of the most popular players. This includes support for side by side and over/under 3D movies and pre made gamepad emulation profiles for basic playback control.
Capturing the desktop is not a good way to handle movie watching on the Rift. The main issue with that for movie playback is that it makes the movie blurrier than it has to be. First the video player scales the image up than it is captured and afterwards scaled again for display in the headset. Each scaling process makes the image blurrier. With the VLC player vorpX can grab the video at its original size and display it directly, which saves the first quality degrading scaling step. vorpX also does the unavoidable scaling step in a special way that preserves image clarity better.
Apart from that simply capturing the desktop also introduces an additional framerate conversion issue as the video is first converted from (for a normal movie) 24fps to the desktop refreshrate (usually 60fps), then captured at the desktop refresh rate and converted again to the 75fps (Rift DK2) of the headset. Similar to the scaling each of these steps degrades quality, in this case visible as micro stutter. Regardless of the player used vorpX always captures the video at its original framerate, saving the first framerate conversion.
vorpX will be a pretty good choice for watching movies in conjunction with MPC-HC and especially VLC. Image quality wise, which in the end is what counts the most, arguably the best.
In a nutshell: if you care about image quality when watching movies in the Rift, use a specialized VR movie player or vorpX 0.9 (available later this month) with VLC, but do not use something that just captures the desktop.
