Some DX9 games could crash on start or when changing the game resolution (e.g. Outlast, The Darkness II

I am a little unshure, does this mean Darkness 2 is supposed to work now ? I am asking because it behaves just the same as HL2. Game showing on Monitor w. VorpX Logo, but not in HMD. (Win7/64)

    vorpX 19.2.2.1 has been released.

This hotfix addresses a severe issue causing several DX9 games to crash on start. No other changes.

Just checked Outlast and there seems to be an issue with the game. Nothing Rift S related, it’s a general problem, happens with all headsets. I’ll see what can be done.

I changed the device literally 2 weeks ago to S. I played outlast, and a couple more games that now do not work on S. The computer is quite powerful, I did not install new programs that could affect the work

When you rename the exe, the Outlast profile is no longer triggered. VorpX attempts to auto hook any unassigned directx app that starts running, even though it isn’t sure how to handle it.

This means it probably is displaying in your headset, but without any 3D options nor proper view settings.

I tested my old steam copy of Outlast just now. I can confirm that alt tabbing at any time wont let me back in, just black window. A brief skim through the steam forums says many people encounter this.

My game seems to launch the logo screens in windowed mode, but then auto switches to fullscreen for the menu screen. It’s possible this is in part because I have game resolution set lower than my monitor’s native resolution. Unsure.

As long as I’m not clicking outside the load window or alt tabbing, I can load in and play as intended.

Maybe load in without vorpX and make sure the game is set to fullscreen first. Or if that dosn’t work, change it to windowed first. Trying your native resolution or one lower maybe also. Try not to tab out or click anywhere.

And as always, make sure you’re not running any side apps like fraps or afterburner, or programs that record or use overlays in game.

Found a solution after doing some research…

I have to rename OLGame.exe (in the actual win64 folder in directory for outlast), I renamed it to “OLGame1.exe” and it works completely fine. However if renamed to OLGame.exe again it will not launch…

I also tried this with the win32 folder and it did not work. Very weird but at least I found a fix and got the game working.

    Hi guys,

I’ve just purchased vorpx and have not been able to get it working well at all, I launched outlast and it launched perfectly fine, got to the menu screen of the game however there was a pop up that just told me vorpx changed some settings and the game may need a restart so I decided to exit and launch it again.

Now I cannot get past the loading screen without it just going blank indefinitely. I managed to get it working somehow after about 20 tries however when I alt tabbed out to check some settings, I could not go back to the game as it was just black and I cannot get it to launch again.

The loading screen comes up fine but when the menu is meant to appear it simply stops working! using a rift s.

    Help is appreciated

There is no problem with head tracking, for example, in resident Evil 7 or outlast, I cannot go to the left stick. On the left stick, for some reason, I have to turn my head like on the right stick. As if I had 2 right stickes on my gamepad. at the same time, head rotation is working fine.

I had Bioshock Infinite, installed it, and it plays/looks/feels a lot better than either of the Outlast titles.

Thanks for the suggestions and help.

The only setting I change in the Nvidia control panel is power to max, everything else is default.

I tried changing the Fluid Sync, both instances using Alt-f in game it shows “Game Fps:45 Direct Mode Fps 85-90”, so the menu fps warning is somewhat off I guess? I did have ASW on for the fps test.

This was in Outlast, with resolution at 1280 x 960, and all settings at “Very Low”.

I don’t think I’d be able to play for too long though. It’s still “not smooth”, and makes me feel queasy after a few minutes. I’ve had vr long enough now (1.5 yrs) that I’m used to it, and can play everything for hours without feeling queasy, but not running like this.

I think I’ve tried all the optimizations I can in Vorpx, I certainly can’t set the game any lower.

As stated already, I’m currently using Z-buffer3d. It still doesn’t answer why that fps value never changes when I change game settings. I can run Outlast on higher settings, it shows 26-28 fps. I can then set everything to absolute lowest, and it still shows 26-28 fps, and I don’t really see any difference in game.

Sorry, but non of this is making any sense.

I’m seeking help and my posts keep disappearing?

Ok, I’ll edit this one as it seems to be hanging around.

Seeking any help with a strange phenomena. In ever game I get a red warning about the fps being too low, it’s always showing 27-28 fps. I then start changing settings in game, and it seems to have no affect. Changing in game Vorpx settings also doesn’t seem to help

I can set the resolution high, shows 27-28 fps, I can set it to the lowest possible, still shows 27-28 fps. I can set every in game setting to the lowest possible, it still shows 27-28 fps.

Right now I’m trying to get Outlast, and or Outlast 2 to look respectable, and at least playable. I can set the settings, and resolution high or low, it always shows 27-28 fps, and really doesn’t look very good.

I have a lot of other vr titles like DCS, Elite Dangerous, Xplane, about 20 Oculus games/apps, and about 20 Steam games/apps. All of them play at medium to high settings without any issue.

I have a Rift Cv1, and always turn ASW off, I can’t stand it, and will never use it. I have it disabled whenever I start a game up.

My system is a i5 8400, 16gb DDR4 2666, GTX 1060 6gb, running up to date Win 10. Like I stated earlier, all my other vr games/apps run fine at med to high settings, or more.

Why am I only seeing 27-28 fps when using Vorpx, even after changing all settings to the lowest possible?

And yes, I’ve read all the “essential reading” sections in these forums, nothing seems to help.

If you are new to vorpX, you probably want to hop right into the action instead of learning how to configure vorpX. The list below contains first person games that work with litlle to no configuration in ‘Full VR’ due to vorpX’s DirectVR functionality, which can configure important things like field of view, head tracking or resolution automatically.

For third person games that are usually played best in immersive screen or cinema mode not much configuration is required in general, so this list focuses on first person ‘Full VR’ games that can be a little harder to configure without DirectVR.

If you are stuck, make sure to check the ‘Essential Hints Guide’ and the ‘Quick Reference’ in the help. They help you understand a few basic concepts.
