Quite simple: the reason for this are the considerably lower sales taxes in many parts of the US. This makes it possible to sell slightly cheaper over there. If you live elsewhere, your local tax rate applies, regardless of the currency you pay something in. So unfortunately that wouldn’t change anything.

    That is great Ralf.

It’s amazing how much you can customize your Oculus experience by swapping out for custom lenses. I’m using some 5 times magnification, double sided lenses and 1600X1200 resolutions and I can see everything including menus and HUD elements.

The ability to adjust the FOV and 3D depth will be essential to allow such customizations to work right I would imagine. I am stoked for the opportunity to tweak everything and see what combinations work the best.

That was also something I was wondering about. Since the Oculus is pretty much one single piece of hardware, the usual options I know from 3D software is not as neccessary. And so far in the native Oculus games/demos the only real value you had to put in was the IPD.
Is vorpX is pre-calibrated like this as well, so that the IPD is all you need if you use stock hardware?

Yes. You can customize everything that is needed to make vorpX’s output a perfect fit for your individual eyesight (and in your case lensmod). Standard settings do work great for most people, but if needed, there are enough advanced tweaking options to spend half a day experimenting with them. ;)

The demos I have seen look good and I look forward to purchasing this software.

I have a question about display customization. Will there be settings to adjust Field of View and other things such as 3d depth to customize the experience?

I have been playing around with other side by side software that works okay with older games but requires adjustment each time I play to make the experience bearable. Vorpx seems like it will work well out of the box but will we also be able to customize the experience if necessary if the field of view or 3d depth rendering arent quite what we want?

This would be particularly great for me as I have “created” custom lenses for my rift using magnifying lenses from eye monocles in place of my standard B cup lenses. The increased field of view is great but im crossing my fingers that vorpx will allow me to adjust settings as necessary. Or is it designed to give everyone a uniform experience on a standard rift configuration?

    Thanks for the hard work!

Yes, something like that is there. And there is lot more that is focusing on making games actually playable on the Rift instead of just adding 3D.

That’s the intention behind vorpX, and that’s why it’s called ‘3D Driver and more’.

I’m not really sure if I read somewhere that vorpx will some day have it, or if I just made it all up, so I’m asking.
What I seem to remember is a feature where you hold a button, and the whole screen basically turns into a 2D image in front of you. Then you can use your headmotions to look around the whole screen (like for instance in an inventory), and release the button to go back to the normal way of navigating the game with your headmotions.
So, is that something I just thought was cool at some point, or did I actually read it?

@ Happy: Thanks for your continued interest in vorpX, although you already seem to know that other solutions are superior. ;) We all know your opinion by now though. Please advertise other products elsewhere, especially if you have nothing more to say than just assumptions based on nothing. Thank you.

i think its good to wait. i rather there be a lot of game support and less having to manually set up things. also i want the headtracking to just “work”. both tridef and perception just arnt there yet. and for 50 bucks i rather wait for a bit to have a driver that works…..that doesnt feel buggy that feels like a polished driver with many features. i griped before of it taking forever but seeing how both the other solutions in my opinion fail right now (more so tridef considering it costs 50 bucks they should have did more interial testing rather then rushing out a half baked beta that only offically suports nearly as many games (few) that perception does). i can wait a bit for someone to finally get it right. i hope Vorpx will be awesome!

What the hell Mr.Geddings, just a week ago you were screaming at Ralf and calling him a dick for not having a release yet, now you are saying it’s good to wait?

I think you better prepare yourself for disappointment because it doesn’t sound like you understand the fact that ‘retrofitted’ drivers (which is what VorpX is) will never be perfect.
Tridef never ‘pushed out’ a half baked beta, they make it clear on their website that the beta is ‘experimental’ and in a very early state. As well, for those of us who had already purchased Tridef for it’s stereo drivers, the Oculus Rift support is a nice addition to an already great product.
You could almost guarantee that many of the games that VorpX officially ‘supports’ will run at about the same level as many of the games that you can play with Tridef but are currently listed as ‘unsupported’ due to the amount of tweaking that are currently necessary to get them working just right.

Just wanted to say i am sorry for being a jerk and ranting like i did. but now that we have an annoucement of info on a release date for the beta in not to long thats great. Honestly seeing the other options out there, both felt rushed. So i understand now that something like this needs to be taken time to do. and theres no real since to allow people to try out something thats not quite there yet, case in point: the preception drivers and the tridef beta. both are not there yet. tridef i am really dissipointed in as i think they more or less just ripped half of the stuff from the perception drivers as i find it interesting their rendering is nearly the same with it being more long ways and how only a small “handful” of games work with it offically yet.

plus in both cases the headtracking just isnt there yet. I find that with the Rift the headtracking is so good that when its not quite right….you feel it. tridef with Skyrim just didnt feel right the 3d was fine but the headtracking just was not quite there. Same with the perception drivers in that case the headtracking felt a bit wobbly like you would move side to side and it felt like it was swaying a bit more then it should like sideways…..

so yeah. I am sorry i was a jerk over it. I guess i thought it would be forever, but it seems in cases like this it needs a lot of time. I think with a game driver for the Oculus Rift its better to wait till it works good then to just rush it out ..because if you rush it out and it doesnt work so well its just that more frustrating. the headtracking needs to be spot on if possible. otherwise i think it just makes the whole experience not quite there.

so im glad that your taking the time and at least we will have a bit of news soon when the beta will be avaible just try to keep working on headtracking and making sure it “feels right” with most of the games. as i think that will be one of the biggest things :-).

thanks for your hard work and i look foward to it when it comes out! sorry for being an a pain in the ass!

A firm release date for a vorpX beta version will be announced within the next few weeks. Please keep an eye (or both if you like) on the announcement sticky above.

@ All, and especially Mr. Geddings: The forum was so utterly cluttered with ‘release it already’-threads that it got next to unusable. Because of this those threads were all merged into this one and every new thread regarding this will be merged into this one too. Nothing wrong with discussing the matter, but please discuss it here instead of opening the same thread over and over again. Thanks. :-)

The only reason we are nagging you so much about this, Ralf, is that what we have seen of this driver so far is above my wildest expectations ;)
I’ve fiddled around with 3D some years ago with TriDef and Nvidia, but vorpx is just plain better than anything I remember from back then.

The worst is knowing than such an awesome piece of software already exists ;)

At this point I would recommend a 14 day trial period for the driver so people can see the superior feature set of your product. People are not going to turn around and spend another $40-$55 for another product after they just bought the Tri-def driver to do the same thing, without a compelling reason to do so. A lot of people are on the 14 day trial of Tri-def, so if you release soon you may still be able to get ahead of it.

…the profit will continue to dwindle…

Either that, … or something else. ;) I might decide to broaden the approach towards stereoscopic displays for example, which I didn’t do on purpose until now.
