It’s been a while since I reported here, but I finally put together a video that covers the entire end to end process for both the Steam and Epic or GOG editions of the game. In addition to this video, my final version of the PDF instructions are linked in the description for quicker reference.

The setup guide covers absolutely everything along with the known issues you’ll have playing this game in Full VR and offers visual helpers for every step:

I highly doubt this person knows what they’re doing. He launched the game without binding it to any profile – that or he’s bound it to the vanilla BL1 profile and did a DVR scan that failed head tracking. The head tracking is visibly dead. The G3D is almost certainly not working. I’d be one to think that “first party VR” at least has half decent head tracking, but this guy’s bar is rock-bottom low.

Most of us can do a far better job of loading this game with VorpX including everyone who posted in this thread.

@Ralf Oh wow, thank you for fixing that Bioshock Infinite FOV hitch! I didn’t know if it was possible to have DVR head tracking while letting the game handle its own FOV but here we are!

Looking forward to recording my next session with that game, which now appears to have become even more of a showcase title for VorpX!

@lipplog Also, it seems I screwed up with the head tracking for one specific reason: I actually blasted the game’s mouse sensitivity and forgot I had done so, then adapted my HT sensitivity value to that maximum setting. I do believe your setting is likely correct, although I’ll try to get my profile updated for this properly, along with my instructions document.

After juggling all these possibilities (different versions, different cheat tables, etc) I totally dropped the ball on the mouse sensitivity :D LOL

However the correct value is almost half of what you proposed. After multiple tests I’ve found 0.95 is what it should be at. I’ve updated my cloud profile and my instructions to reflect this.

    Ok, good news:

First I uploaded my GOG/Epic edition profile to the cloud. If anyone wishes to use that please be my guest. The name of the profile is “What Remains of Edith Finch (GOG/Epic)”.

Second, I’ve updated my instructions document and it should now cover ALL versions of the game. Take care that some steps have a different action for the Steam or GOG/Epic version, and other steps are only for the GOG/Epic version. If you’ve made custom profiles for the game before, or downloaded some off the internet, scrap those and start from scratch as my instructions show you how to either use the built-in profile (Steam) or create a proper copy for the game (GOG/Epic).

Ok, sorry it took me a while to catch up, here, guys.

First off yes I can upload my profile on the cloud, although it really only is a copy of the original WRoEF profile with very slight changes to it (ie image zoom, separation strength, HT sensitivity)

Secondly the image zoom thing: We’re stuck at a 16:9 resolution (I now own the Steam edition of the game and I’m just as unable to launch that one in windowed mode as I am the GOG edition, both versions crash on launch unless I’m running fullscreen) and thus, Image Zoom at 1.0 is absolutely unplayable given the image is so enlarged, the aliasing is visible and the game is a blurry mess… the game’s artificial AA techniques actually make it worse, not better.

I’ve tinkered around until I found the best balance between pixel density (image sharpness), performance and of course viewing area. In no way, shape or form is the game “unplayable” with image zoom at 0.75. Sure it produces slightly visible edges at the top and bottom, but if you turn “Background” in Image Settings to “Ambiance” you will forget about these edges after 30 seconds of gameplay. The result from this chain of settings is much, much less aliasing without having to use the game’s own terrible blurry anti aliasing methods (basically you leave AA on Low), a slightly lower FOV thus giving the game a boost in performance (the higher the FOV, the more work the game needs to do) and a visible area that’s far superior to cinema or immersive screen modes, all while enjoying that full blown 360 head tracking.

If we could run at custom resolutions, something I haven’t been able to get working yet, image zoom could probably go up to 0.8 or 0.85 while having the same image detail, but right now being stuck at 16:9 there’s not much we can do but endure a tiny slither of visible edges at the top and bottom. Keep in mind the edges are only really visible when you move your head up and down at which point the asynchronous timewarp does its thing.

Ralf has helped me confirm how to make this work with the Steam edition too, so I’ll be updating my instructions guide shortly, providing a solution for each edition.

@Ralf Actually it seems that the FullScreenMode value gets saved elsewhere (the registry?) after it’s read inside that ini file. It’s very strange but the game will pick up whatever you’ve put in the ini file and remove the entry when you launch the game, and will keep loading with that last fullscreenmode value until you specify a different one in the ini. Both the GOG and Epic editions also remove that line after loading it.

    @lipplog
For the crash with the Steam edition I’m afraid the base game files don’t like running with that replacement EXE, which effectively invalidates that solution. This does leave one hope, however, but I’d need someone with the Steam edition to verify this for me: There is another CheatEngine table that supposedly works speicifically with the Steam edition.

This is the alternate cheat table:
    http://www.wsgf.org/phpBB3/download/file.php?id=1810
This one is a bit trickier to use, mostly because it’s trying to cover v1.0 and 1.1 of the game at once. I’m assuming you’ll want to edit the v1.1_FOV value. So basically run the actual Steam edition of the game (FinchGame.exe), open that process in CheatEngine while this table is loaded and finally set the v1.1_FOV value somewhere near 0.0123 by double-clicking on the value itself. I’d love to know if this table still actually works. If it does, I’ll feature it in my eventual video setup guide.

FINALLY! Good to know the GOG edition works but it’s worrying that the Steam edition is such a stubborn hindrance. I’ll hold back on making a video tutorial before I can confirm how to make that little bugger work.

As for the other things you say: I may have screwed up with the term “Separation strength” which is now called “3D-Strength/scale”. Most importantly if your 3D reconstruction is not on Geometry 3D, you have a bad profile loaded for this game (it’s the only way you wouldn’t see 3D-Strength/scale). Please tell me you are able to set 3D Reconstruction to Geometry… at that point you should see the 3D-Strength/scale option. I wouldn’t play the game if Geometry wasn’t available; all other options are glitchy 2D and simply aren’t worth our time. VorpX built-in profile works perfectly with Geometry 3D both in immersive screen and full VR modes.

Another sign you may have a bad profile is that head tracking sensitivity. That option never varies from person to person: UNLESS you’ve lowered mouse sensitivity in your game, which would directly affect the strength of the head tracking. Did you ever play with mouse sensitivity? If not, then I’m suspecting you have the wrong profile loaded (in addition to not seeing 3D-Strength/scale)

Lastly AA on Low is actually the same as Off. I should clarify that in my setup. I tend to forget they call it Low unless I’m directly looking at the menu :)

Ok, I’m not sure where you obtained the What Remains of Edith Finch – Epic Games profile (maybe downloaded on the cloud) but my copy of Vorpx which is fully updated didn’t include it. What you did is correct, deleting it and using the copy as I instructed.

Your new problem may likely be due to the FullScreenMode problem. Are you launching the game while VorpX is running, and it blows up right after the three start-up logos? If so:
Refer to Step 8 in my document (About setting FullScreenMode=1 in GameUsersettings.ini) …I know you tried different resolutions and it may well be your game is trying to run in windowed mode, which is known to crash immediately after the starting logos with VorpX.
If it’s crashing even without VorpX running, do let me know.

If you’re running FinchGame-Win64-Shipping.exe I highly doubt it’s firing off FinchGame.exe. I do believe you’re doing that part 100% correctly. If you want to make sure, exit out of Steam completely and launch FinchGame-Win64-Shipping.exe… this should still start the game normally. If it does, then you know you did that part right.

Here’s an image as reference for GameUserSettings.ini
    GameUserSettings.ini
This file can be found in C:\Users\(Your User)\AppData\Local\FinchGame\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor

No… this isn’t a cloud profile. Go into Local Profiles, select the WRoEF profile and click “Create a new profile based on this one”. Tick the “Keep special shader definitions” box. Click OK.
Then click the Add button on the top right and go find the FinchGame-Win64-Shipping.exe file. Then you should be all set.

Ok, the PDF is modified to explain those steps properly. Thanks for the help, I wouldn’t have known of this issue since I don’t have the Steam edition to test with, myself.

Do let me know if these fixed instructions work. You should be good to go.

Ok, it looks like I need to modify Step 4’s footnote into a step of its own – here are the modified steps:

For Steam edition users, your original game EXE is called FinchGame.exe, while the replacement EXE from step 4 is called FinchGame-Win64-Shipping.exe, which you should place in the same folder as FinchGame.exe. When you launch the game, manually run FinchGame-Win64-Shipping.exe (do not run FinchGame.exe or launch the game from Steam)

Copy the WRoEF VorpX profile and bind it to FinchGame-Win64-Shipping.exe (When you copy the profile, check the “Keep special shader definitions” option) or the game won’t hook properly.

Note: Basically CheatEngine won’t hook to the game if it’s not specifically called FinchGame-Win64-Shipping.exe.

(Repost since the original was somehow removed after an edit… TWICE?)

    @eincrou
Thanks for keeping everyone caught up on the process and the possibility of running this game in full VR. Also thanks for the credit :)

If anyone wants to run WRoEF in Full VR I’ve drawn up a document explaining what to do to get everything working correctly and I tried to include every single required step from avoiding a possible game crash all the way to adjusting FOV and everything in between. I plan on making a video with visual aids which should make the process even easier, but for now here’s a PDF file of the instructions me and Eincrou have built up so far.

VorpX Instructions for What Remains of Edith Finch in Full VR

If anyone tries these, I’d like some feedback, notably those using the Steam version which we are unable to test with (since I own the GOG version and Eincrou uses the Epic version)

PS: @Ralf , please add FinchGame-Win64-Shipping.exe to your default WRoEF profile so we don’t have to rename the EXE or copy profiles when we’re using the Epic Games/GOG edition. Feel free to read through my document as it might help you create a built in profile to run this beauty in Full VR. Thanks for all your hard work, too.

Well, yeah, the hand models are fixed… at first I was jumping with joy. I proceeded to play for about 2 hours.

The problem is however, somehow we’ve managed to end up making every single character go bald. All the hair is now gone. One problem gone, another new problem arrived.

Credit where credit is due, it’s bloody terrifying; exhibit “A” bald Mia (at 29:25):

Also looks like I have bald Marguerite in the actual thumbnail.
Jokes aside I hope it gets fixed. Looks pretty ridiculous.

Thanks for the pointer Ralph… I do have a Reddit account but I waste so much time on Twitter I barely check in anymore :P

I’ll get around to this; I see kurry got ahead of me on it – thanks for that! I do recall a few of my information videos were shared there and they exploded! Really appreciated.

Hope in the end we just get more people using VorpX. Since DirectVR, not only is this *for real* but also, Bioshock Infinite has finally made be believe a non-VR game can fully, fully, fully, fully go VR with this tool. we’ve gotten close before, but BsI is undecipherable from a real seated VR game right now.
