In reply to: Skyrim – Is this supposed to look good?
RalfKeymasterResolution:
As said a few times above, the default res of 1280×1024 is a general compromise between quality and performance.
For the best possible image quality use 4:3/5:4 resolutions like 1600×1200 or 1920×1440. If you know how to do that, you can also use custom resolutions with the exact aspect ratio of the headset screen, which will be slightly faster. 1080×1200 or 1296×1440 for example. The latter is quite close to the Rift/Vive internal render resolution and provides the same image quality as native apps do.
In Skyrim and a handful of other games you can alternatively supersample with the “Internal Resolution Upscale” option in the vorpX ingame menu.
If you want foliage antialiased, you need to activate AA and also force transparency AA in your graphics driver. This will reduce performance noticably though. Skyrim itself does a hard on/off transparency on foliage, nothing vorpX can do about that.
Performance:
Skyrim with Geometry 3D is mainly CPU bound with vorpX. Since it has to render everything twice and on top of that there is an additional overhead, performance in Skyrim isn’t exactly great.
With an unmodded Skyrim at medium to high settings you should get about 45fps in most parts of the outside map with Geometry 3D (more in interiors, less in towns and areas with dense vegetation).
To enhance performance you need to lower graphics settings (especially object draw distances) and/or switch to Z-Buffer 3D, which doesn’t look as good but is a lot faster.

BuckleBeanParticipantSomething is very wrong on my end with Deus Ex Human Revolution + vorpx, especially, when using DX11. I’ve tried both versions. With DX11 enabled, framerates are abysmal, similar to yours with G3D, Z3D, even 3D off. I was messing with it last night. Setting it to DX9 yielded better framerates, but it didn’t seem like ATW was working. Lots of stutter when looking around when framerates drop below 90fps. Other titles, for example, still have buttery smooth headtracking even at 30fps, so it leads me to believe something is wrong with timewarp – either the oculus SDK or vorpx’s version. Also, for one of the games, the Z3D modes defaulted to 0.00 3D strength. When raising this setting, it seemed to alter IPD instead of 3D separation. Also, CPU usage was @ 100%. Weird stuff going on that I think is game specific.
Dishonored, on the other hand runs very well on my system. In most cases, framerates are high enough not to notice issues. I see drops when there are a lot of AI wandering about the larger outdoor areas. In those cases, I switch to Z3D for a spell. The Hound Pits pub is notorious for lower fps, though.

prinyoParticipantIf I understand correctly, the intended optimal FPS combo (shown via Alt+F) is 45/90.
All the tweaks with resolutions, 3D mode, graphics quality, mods and so on should revolve around that.
Also switching the resolution to the non-16:9 ratio helps a lot.I decided to test with FO4 as it is a somewhat more “modern” game. 1920×1440 resolution helped a lot not only to make the HUD readable but also to prevent dizziness as it makes the world sharper. At Z3D (Adaptive) and 80 image zoom I was able to run up and down a hill with no discomfort or dizziness so that’s quite cool :-)
There are two problems I found about FO4. The dialogue wheel is too low on the screen, but that can be fixed with a mod. The other one, that is also valid for Skyrim, is that in 3-rd person the player character is quite on the left side of the screen. This is very confusing when you try to walk or run around obstacles as you need to keep in mind that the correct position is the one of the character and not yours. But it is harder to access it as you only see half of him/her. I haven’t noticed this left offset by now, I wonder if there are mods to fix it.Jul 4, 2016 at 3:00am #104319
RalfKeymasterIf you are prone to motion sickness, you should always favor a high frame rate over image quality. I would consider 50-60fps the minimum unless you are largely immune. That’s enough for timewarp tp be able to compensate for the rest largely unnoticable for most. The closer to the optimal 90fps for Rift/Vive, the better of course. The best way to achieve that in Skyrim is switching to Z-Buffer 3D, which doesn’t look as good, but is a lot faster.
HUD: Try a higher resolution than the default suggestion, which is a general compromise between quality and performance. Since Skyrim is largely CPU bound with vorpX, 1600×1200 or even 1920×1440 may be possible without a large performance hit (check with ALT+F) depending on your GPU. This will not only enhance image quality, but also help tremendously with HUD readabilty when scaled further down than the default.
Regarding enhancements for novice users: the Essential Hints Guide in the vorpX help which explains the two most important things (field of view and head tracking sensitivity) will open automatically with vorpX on every launch in the future. It is already linked from many places in the config app and also highlighted in multiple ways, so it should be almost impossible to overlook it, but apparently that is still not enough for everyone to find it.

prinyoParticipantOK, so I’v found the answers to some of my questions.
On point 3 I was confused by the “peek” in name (EdgePeek) that it is only active while the mouse wheel is pressed. I’ve found out that the view will persist if the wheel is pressed and quickly released. This helps a lot with using the game’s interface.
I’ve also discovered the setting to zoom the HUD elements which also helps. But there are some problems with it. I’ve only tried it in Skyrim and it seems the notifications are not considered part of the HUD and are still not visible. And the bigger problem is if I zoom the HUD enough in order to it to fit in my view it gets unreadable. I can’t find a zoom level that makes the HUD both readable and fitting the view (so I don’t need the EdgePeek) at the same time.On the motion sickness point I have found out that zooming the HUD so the compass is always visible helps a lot. So is zooming out the whole game.
I understand that until now VR was mostly a field for advanced users and the default Vorpx settings are made for them – it throws you in the deep immediately. But there are more and more users like me who will have problems understanding how to set it up and use it.
My first 3 days trying to use it all follow the same pattern – 10 minutes in experimenting ended by strong feeling of dizziness and followed by hours of real world headache. It was on the 3rd day that I discovered the arrows on the top of the Vorpx in-game interface to change the pages with the settings…Testing and tweaking Vorpx is different from any other software I have used in my life in the fact that it has real life health consequences.
I would like to suggest that there is a “noob preset” or change to the default settings that is friendly to the new users. For example start with zoomed-out game and visible HUD and let people discover that they can change that to more immersive levels. As opposed to now where the default settings are quite extreme and hostile to novice users.P.S. I tried solutions for the screen resolution but I still can’t make Skyrim run at more than 25-30 FPS.

HawkJizbelParticipantvorpx won’t hook into Diablo 3 and I have no clue why or how I to troubleshoot it.
the more games I try with vorpx the more I regret buying it

could anyone help please?
ty
Hi. The only way i got it to work is by turning on the vorpx desktop viewer and then going on diablo. The reason the other way doesn’t work is because battle.net is strict about people trying to intercept their video output from the game.
I also noticed that the service provided by vorpx(Except the desktop viewer) is provided by steam for free. All you have to do is add a non steam game to the steam library then go to its properties then select the vr theater option. Once ur ready to play, turn steam vr on and you will be in a movie theater playing the game.
Jun 27, 2016 at 3:05pm #104104In reply to: low frames and seated mode only??? Vive
RalfKeymasterYou can’t compare vorpX performance to your normal monitor gaming performance.
Playing games with vorpX is a lot more demanding than playing them on your monitor. For one vorpX has to render everything twice in Geometry 3D mode, which lowers the framerate by ~50% compared to playing on a monitor. On top of that there is another small frame rate drop (10%-20%) because of a second rendering process taking place in parallel that renders the image to the headset. Depending on the game the limiting factor can be the CPU. In such cases a GTX 1080 will not provide any advantage at all.
For better performance lower a game’s graphics settings and/or switch to Z-Buffer 3D, which doesn’t look as good but is a lot faster since it doesn’t have to render everything twice.
Games with Geometry 3D and positional tracking support can be played standing despite the headset being initialized in seated mode. Whether that makes sense or not is another question, but with a gamepad you can also play standing. The next vorpX version will also allow to map WASD for movement etc. to the Vive controllers.
Jun 25, 2016 at 3:00pm #104049Topic: Outlast not launching
in forum Technical Support
Manc_UK_VRParticipantHi All, I just bought VorpX with the sole purpose of playing outlast in VR (which I hear works quite well) – however the game failes to launch whenever the watcher is running, nor does it work with the watcher disabled and a shortcut from the shortcut generator on the taskbar.
HTC VIVE
Comp Spec:-
Windows 10 Pro N (WinVer 1151 – OS Build 10586.420)
Asus Z170 Deluxe
Asus STRIX 980ti 6GB (Nvidia Driver 365.19)
32GB DDR4 (corsair)
500GB (SSD)
2TB (Seagate mech)I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong here, but I’ve tried every executable in the outlast folder (win 32 and 64 binaries) and nothing seems to work, the HMD doesn’t even go dark like it’s trying to load something.
If I use the watcher and go straight to the OLGame.exe (Win32 folder) I get the error message “Windows cannot access the specified device, You may not have appropreate permissions to access the device”.
Please note: I have tried starting VorpX as administrator also (Start > All Apps > Start vorpX > as admin), the results are the same as above – permissions error.
If I pause the watcher the game launches as normal.
Can someone please let me know what I’m doing wrong, I’d dying to play this in VR!!
Thanks in advance for any help!
Jun 21, 2016 at 5:25pm #103901In reply to: Question about resolution
reanorParticipantWhen we set a resolution for a game in Cv1,for example 1280×1024 game running in Vorpx…
Is this shared all resolution between the two screens,or total resolution is represented twice being one for each separate screen? This doubt is exclusive to work with Vorpx, standard behavior with native games is out of the question.
regards1280×1024 is a middle resolution considering performance and quality. If you want better resolution in games, create custome resolution 1920×1440 in your graphics card settings, then run the game in that resolution. You can also use a trick with oculus debugger to increase pixel ratio, one of the forum posts explains how, it will make image clealerer. Using that and having 1920×1440 in-game resolution will really make the experience better.
After this, the only thing I could have wished if resolution of the oculus retina displays was a bit higher, then it would be a winner. To get above described working well, you need latest GPU. – GTX 1070, 1080. Both, pixel ratio and high resolution, will put extra load on your GPU, anything below 980, will struggle badly, and even 980 may have a problem to support both tricks while keeping good steady fps.
Jun 18, 2016 at 10:16pm #103779In reply to: some hints for VIVE users ?
RalfKeymasterYou only need to use the image zoom if you can’t adjust the field of view (FOV) for a game. If you can set the FOV to 120°, you don’t need the image zoom, allowing you to use the full screen area of the headset.
For BF4 for example the FOV can be adjusted with a single click in the vorpX Game Optimizer in the config app. COD Ghost has an ingame FOV slider IIRC. If a game or vorpX don’t provide an internal solution, an external tool like Flawless Widescreen or Widescreen Fixer can often be used to enhance the FOV.
The two games you mention indeed only have Z-Buffer 3D, many others allow to switch between Geometry 3D (rendering everything twice) and Z-Buffer 3D. Be aware though that G3D is a lot more taxing. In many newer games you will have a hard time to get VR compatible frame rates with G3D.
Jun 16, 2016 at 3:44pm #103710Topic: Shadows/reflections in games
in forum Technical Support
goldiefoxxParticipantSo the 3d of vorpx is absolutely fantastic. But the only thing ive noticed is that shadows and reflections look really weird on geometry 3d.
For example looking at the reflection of the sun in a lake, on my right eye the reflection was angled like ‘\’ but on my left it was ‘/’, making the mixed image look very strange and immersion breaking.
Is this normal/is there a way to fix it?
Jun 16, 2016 at 10:24am #103683In reply to: Skyrim – Is this supposed to look good?
RalfKeymaster@ borum : For 1:1 head tracking you need to adjust the head tracking sensitivity on the head tracking page of the vorpX ingame menu like described in the Essential Hints guide in the vorpX help. If you didn’t do so already, please read this guide. It also contains other vital infos.
If you use Geometry 3D, vorpX renders everything twice just like native apps do. With the FOV set up correctly, you get the exact same kind if 3D like in VR games. Z-Buffer 3D however uses a different approach that doesn’t look as good, but on the other hand is a lot faster. So you can to choose whether you prefer performance or perfect stereo 3D.

Topic: Outlast not launching
Hi All, I just bought VorpX with the sole purpose of playing outlast in VR (which I hear works quite well) – however the game failes to launch whenever the watcher is running, nor does it work with the watcher disabled and a shortcut from the shortcut generator on the taskbar.
HTC VIVE
Comp Spec:-
Windows 10 Pro N (WinVer 1151 – OS Build 10586.420)
Topic: Shadows/reflections in games
So the 3d of vorpx is absolutely fantastic.
