I have been playing Skyrim a lot with my DK2 (20+ hours) and I have switched my VORPX configuration quite a bit and I have found some things that can trade off but never be perfected. I have some thoughts and a question.
1) Z-fighting in skyrim engine. I can fix this with fneardistance=20-25 (from skyrim.ini) but this messes with the convergence. I can fix that problem with the focal offset but it never feels quite right. Not to mention this also makes huge hands problem worse and has clipping issues. So I guess I will just live with flickering mountains :/ Stereo Shadows are perfect and water is good but slightly odd in Geo3d. Sky looks fine but I notice the clouds don’t have proper convergence only at sunset and sunrise (night stars and daytime clouds are perfectly fine? I simply just avoid sunset so it works fine)
2)framerate. I have used z-depth a lot and found that it actually did not feel smooth even though the framerate was steady 37.5 (Half-refresh async time warp). It always had a bit of a single frame jump/jitter about once per 2-3 seconds and this was worse with full refresh rate.
In Geo 3d it feels a little smoother despite being only 25-30 fps (while the game frame-rate is stated as 75fps. Does this mean that vsync is stuck on despite the fact I disabled it in Nvidia control or is this normal???). Oddly my fps does not seem to change at all weather I set the graphics to very low, med or ultra … always the same 25-30fps outdoors (with no mods running). I believe this is because my video card is so good that graphics details have very little effect and my bottleneck is my cpu.
MY RIG
CPU Athlon x4 860K overclocked to 4.2 Ghz (8Gb DDR3)
GPU EVGA Geforce GTX 980
My main question is… Would a good intel CPU make a huge difference? Is it possible to get a smooth 37.5 or 75 fps in outdoor areas for skyrim or am I already pretty much maxed out already? Also any insight to why I may have the occasional frame jump/skip problem in the z-buffer mode or is this normal too?
even overclocked the game just cant keep up a high enough frame rate in outdoor areas (especially when enemies show up) with an ENB enabled.
That’s what I thought, until I realized two very important things that now have my modded Skyrim running smoothly with RealVision on my 780ti.
1. Open Steam –> Skyrim –> Play –> “Option” and change your resolution to 1920×1080. Lowering my resolution fixed all my FPS issues like magic.
2. Make sure you’ve correctly setup the ENBoost memory patch. Doing this put an end to all my crash to desktops. This video does a good step-by-step… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdar8cIGd24
Note: I’m assuming you’ve installed the skse.ini memory fix, and are using Mod Organizer.
I have the DK2 and don’t plan on upgrading .. it’s too expensive and I don’t believe diving into another HMD at this point is a good investment as they seem to drop all support for the previous iteration on new release. My content works great as is. Vorpx has done an amazing job and I’d really like to keep what I have working. I’ll be playing Left 4 Dead 2, Skyrim and Fallout 4 for the foreseeable future. So please Ralf, can I keep Vorpx 0.9.1 and runtime 0.8 and my DK2? I don’t really want to update my Vorpx, runtime or drivers. Everything is working beautifully and I’m a happy gamer.
I don’t know how far off Ralf’s update is, but I’m already counting the hours. If you still need to be convinced why VorpX is a “must-have” application, then check out the content on the new Oculus Home site. Warning: to do so, you will have to uninstall runtime 0.8, which means losing access to your VorpX driver (until Ralf’s next update). A decision I’m already regretting after a few of days of trying out most of Oculus’s “Nintendoish” content. Maybe it’s just be a matter of taste, but if Lucky’s Tale had been my first experience in VR, I never would have been impressed enough to actually buy a headset. I’m already considering downgrading back to 0.8 just so I can return to Skyrim, GTA V, and CoD which ironically feels like “real VR” compared to what I’ve been stuck with the last 3 days.
NOTE: I am using a DK2, not a CV1, if that matters. But as Ralf has stated he plans a version of VorpX for Vive, I may upgrade to that instead.
No it doesn’t work in 3d. but in 1600 X 1200 with letterbox2 in vorpx with a little zoom that really fun. i see on the web Hoopermation’s video play in 3d with the fix of the nvidia 3dvision (Helixmod) and vorpx !! i have the 3d vision but i can’t find any solution…there a conflict with the d3d11.dll when start the game with vorpx .
Hi Ralf !! Really nice work !! Oblivion !! BF4 !! Skyrim …!!Thanks a lot
so can we have a Z3D for Farcry Primal ??
You could try experimenting with some of Skyrims memory patches. I haven’t tackled it yet for Skyrim but the 4gb patch with Fallout NV and NVSE work with vorpX so I bet there is something that will do the same for Skyrim. If you get ta memory patch to work you should be able to load up a lot more textures and such.
I’ve been trying to do exactly this. Playing Skyrim without mods is just unacceptable. And I’ve gotten it to look wonderful without my frame rate dropping below 75. The only issue is not being able to install the essential memory patch tweak that fixes Skyrim’s flawed memory allocation. I just need to figure out how to add the d3d9.dll file without crashing VorpX.
Is there any possible way to play Skyrim and not have the whole scene move with your head (i.e. not have the head tracking move the mouse) without having to have it in cinema mode? I’m using Windows 10 and Oculus 0.8 runtime. It just doesn’t seem like this is the way it’s supposed to be. You should ideally be able to move your head around as the scene stays still.
Developer went offline? no reply in last one week!! Sent a mail also. Wanted to confirm that you will have my money if u add Vive support especially with Games Skyrim , Need for Speed series and Grid 2, Titanfall etc!! I used Tridef 3d now but they dropped VR support fully, So its your chance to make use of the empty market Space!!! So bad for them and good for you!!!!
I have good news for you. You will be able to run tridef games in virtual desktop steam app. It support sbs games and you have head tracking from virtual desktop. tridef milked money and invested in something else. I am also waiting to hear that vive is supported here and I will play gladly for good work.

I’ve still not been able to launch GTA with it properly, or any game, besides Skyrim.
Yeah…. I can only get Skyrim to work, and that’s about it. Tried to get GTA V, Metro: Last Light and other games. Just doesn’t hook in at all… :S.
I did alot of the same stuff you did as well. I’m on the latest version of VORPX I believe, 0.9.1 beta.
Latest Nvidia Driver, with 3D off, tried with MalwareBytes off, tried launching GTA in diff compatibility modes. Running Windows 10 64bit, GTX 980 TI. Tried to run with Admin rights, but that seems to cause more issues.
Hi there, bought Vorpx yesterday and can’t get it to work on any games. The desktop viewer works perfect.
Windows 10, GTX 970, i5 4670K. All Oculus stuff works fine. I’ve tried creating Vorpx specific desktop shortcuts but still no joy, the games just run on the monitor as usual. I’ve been trying the Steam version of Skyrim primarily, but also have plenty other games to try.
I’ve uninstalled Skype and 3DVision, can’t think what else could be causing the issue. Hope somebody can provide me with a pointer.
Thanks in advance.
Sometimes I’d rather play a game normally on my monitor, yet when I load a game(skyrim), the gamesave I was playing with in Vorpx has a lingering fisheye distortion. Can this be remedied?
So, I just purchased Vorpx and I haven’t gotten it to work on any game yet. The DK1 works perfectly on all of the demos and Desktop Viewers I’ve tried but when I open anything with Vorpx it is extremely Blurry. So far I’ve only tried Skyrim and GTA V. It’s not just the game that is blurry, It’s the entire screen. The Vorpx menu (from pressing [delete]) is also very blurry and the virtual cinema environment is blurry too. Its almost like I’m seeing double and the images aren’t converging.
I’ve tried to change the IPD setting but it didn’t change anything. I’ve tried multiple versions of Oculus Runtime and nothing. Right now I’m updating my nvida drivers to see if that helps.
If anybody has some ideas I would greatly appreciate it.
Yes, Idiot your using the first POS oculus and of course the resolution is going to be blurry. It’s only like 640×480. My old nintendo looks better than that POS.
