The above video is based on a recent 2018 vorpX version and more in-depth in detailed than everything we could have provided ourselves. There are a few inaccuracies, but it’s still great.

Regarding the two games you tried:

For Bioshock make sure to use the original game, not the remaster, and add ‘-dx9’ to the launch options in Steam. Bioshock (the original in DX9 mode) has pretty much all the bells and whistles that vorpX has to offer. This is a very good game to start with since it requires zero manual configuration.

For Fear 2 please make sure that you use the Steam version of the game. With older games like this one there is a certain chance that other versions aren’t detected correctly. Some old CD versions might use a main .exe that is named differently for example, which would prevent vorpX from loading the correct profile.

Make sure you’re playing the original Bioshock (DirectX9 version).

The Remastered versions only work in 2D as you describe.

    Red Ocean (G3D)

Great First Person Shooter with nice explosions and underwater action. Reminds me partly on Bioshock.

    – Good 3D in all modes, FULL VR has headtracking but i decided to optimize the profile for Cinema and Immerice Screen because of getting less sick of character shaking when walking.
    – If you decide to use FUll VR Mode, turn up 3D strength
    – Change Resolution=(width), (height) in Red Ocean.ini ( /users/username/documents/Red Ocean )
    – download profile from the cloud

    (3D FOV enhancement = lower)

    (3D FOV enhancement = higher)

Make sure to run Bioshock in DirectX 9 mode by adding -dx9 to the launch options in Steam. With DX9 you get full Geometry 3D. You should see a notification stating that when you start the game. Tomb Raider 2013 is Z3D only currently.

……and it looks like my version of BioShock is BioShockHD :), so that explains that.

Witcher3 is crashing after I hit ‘Play’ now on the launcher (during the title screen). It has loaded a few times before so I must have borked something. I tried loading from steam, loading from the exe, not sure what I am doing wrong there.

Portal2 loads and has the DirectVR Scan option so excited about that! Only issue there has been flickering screen while playing so need to play with some setting to get that to stop.

Thanks again for the help and quick replies,
    Thump.

The situation is better than before, but apparently still not perfect. I literally spent two full weeks on this, rewrote half of the DX9 pipeline, even implemented a custom memory allocation just to find the root cause of this issue, but no dice. Extremely odd and diffcult to debug problem that seems to be exclusive to this one game.

The next vorpX version will get support for the HD versions of Bioshock 1+2. While they perform worse with vorpX due to their extremely lackluster DX11 conversion, you should be able to play Bioshock 2 without crashes that way in the not too distant future.

Thanks for the update Ralf. I agree it seems this one game is just so unstable yet based on an engine that works well in other titles, but you’ve clearly tried your best on this.

At least I know there’s nothing more I can do but wait for the HD support version to come in future- I’ll just hope DX11 doesn’t cripple performance too much for my 1080 to handle! Cheers.

This should be addressed in the next vorpX version 18.2.0.

I’m not 100% certain since the issue was semi-random, but I was able to get past a notoriously crashy section in the game more than a dozen times now without a single crash, so it’s very likely fixed.

Feedback welcome after vorpX 18.2.0 is released (no date yet though).

    Hi Ralf,

I’ve been keeping an eye on this thread because I too have found Bioshock 2 to be an issue, even though Bioshock 1 worked very well in DirectVR.

For me too, Bioshock 2 on Steam crashes frequently, even with 18.2.2 release 26th May 2018 in DirectVR mode. I can reach points on the first level when it will crash each time (when you first enter the sea), then during Ryan Amusements stepping off the train at the start on the 3rd level. I can play normally outside of VR in standard monitor mode to get past a crashing moment so I know it isn’t the game itself, but it happens so frequently and instantly it makes i impossible to continue in VR. It can also crash when trying to save progress, so it seems this Unreal Engine title is particularly unstable compared to Bioshock 1!

I’ve tried updating my nVidia 1080 to the latest drivers (they were only a couple of months out of date anyway), turned off all graphics options in the GUI, changed resolutions and have been through most relevant VorpX options in its GUI too, but no progress.

Are you able to try Bioshock yourself to see if it happens to you too- for me, it will crash from game start within 10 minutes of gameplay on that first level alone.

switch off dof…… i experienced this very badly in GTA5. Everyhing looked fuzzy and blurry even if dof was switched off. What i did was disableing all graphic enhancements. If u use nvidia u can increase the DSR resolution to to 2 or even 4 times.
Then after u deisabled all grahic enhancements u will need to enable one by one again and try different combinations. My gta 5 is blurry free and even the distant lights look pretty decent.
GTA5 ws the only game that was fuzzy and blurry and flickering. FO4 Skyrim Bioshock infinite ( very clear and beautifull).
    Maybe that helps…

Hey, nieda, you said your GTA V was blur free … could you post your settings here for me to try? Still struggling with how to improve the image of this game …

DirectVR is a collection of multiple features that help to make games a better experience when you play them on the headset, it is not linked to the kind of stereo 3D that is available for a game. It can take care of resolution, FOV, settings-tweaks and head tracking. Which of these four potential DirectVR options are available varies from game to game.

Oculus Touch/Vive wands work with almost every game, that is unrelated to DirectVR. You can use the VR controllers to either emulate mouse and keyboard (freely configurable) or a gamepad.

Games that have all four potential DirectVR features are for example the ones below, a lot more have support for at least one of the potential DirectVR features.

Skyrim (original DX9 version is usually the better choice)
    Fallout 3
    Fallout New Vegas
    Fallout 4
    Portal
    Portal 2
    Far Cry 3
    Far Cry 4
    Far Cry Primal
    Left 4 Dead 2
    Mirror’s Edge
    Bioshock (DX9)
    Bioshock 2 (DX9)
    Bioshock Infinite
    Borderlands 2
    Borderlands Pre-Sequel
    Dishonored
    Deus Ex Human Revolutions
    Black Mesa Source
    Half-Life 2
    Half-Life 2 Episode 1
    Half-Life 2 Episode 2
    Aliens Colonial Marines
    Dear Esther (Source engine version)
    The Stanley Parable

I was getting Access is denied messages from Steam when I tried to launch my games and the following steps fixed my problem.

Modifying settings in Windows Defender Exploit Protection:

    1. Open Windows Defender Security Center
    2. Select “App & browser control”
    3. Click on Program Settings
    4. Click “Add a program to customize” and select “Choose exact file path”
    5. Add vorpScan.exe and vorpScan64.exe
    6. Scroll down and find “Disable extension points”
    7. Click the Override system settings box so that Off is now active
    8. Do the same thing with the game you are attempting to run, for example if this is Bio-Shock Infinate you would add <PathToSteam>\steamapps\common\BioShock Infinite\Binaries\Win32\BioShockInfinite.exe

Close and restart Vorpx, launch your game.

    I tried again..

First of all I bought the software yesterday, so I beginning to experiment a bit.

Let me thank you already for the great way Bioshock Infinite works. It already justifies the money for the software! Once I type Alt + L the game is really well optimized. The only thing I dont like is the right thumbstick of the touch being a bit too sensible. Can you help me with that?

About Pray 2017. If I undertand it doensn’t still support headtracking, which of course makes it much less immersive. Nevertheless, I think it’s ok just if you just want to take a look to the great enviroments. It also run very smooth (gtx 1070).

On the other hand I cannot get a decent experience with Gta V.. The automatic setting gave me the following setup: no head tracking, a resolution of 800×600, and even with that resolution the framerate was incredibly low. Is there a way to get a better experience with this game? This was one of my main motivation for getting VorpX.
Thanks a lot for any help!

I’m not Satya and not at a PC ATM, but there should be an option to override ingame AA settings. When that is enabled, you can choose between 2x, 4x, 8x. There also is a Transparency AA setting which helps a lot with aliased trees, shrubs etc. in DX9 Skyrim.

Be aware though that forcing AA can cause issues in some games with vorpX (e.g. Bioshock running at 5fps), so it’s better to do that per game in the nVidia control panel instead of globally.

Another thing to consider is that MSAA costs a certain amount of performance. But since it would allow you to reduce resolution for comparable image quality, that would still almost certainly be a net win performance wise.

No need to import profiles from the cloud for these games. Please make a factory reset in the config app (trouble shooting page) in case you imported an outdated profile from the cloud.

WoW is a third person game, hence it opens in cinema mode, not much point in playing a third person game in full VR mode, especially one that is so interface heavy as WoW. There is a new mode that sits in between cinema mode and full VR immersion wise in this vorpX. Switch the ‘Play Style’ to ‘Immersive Screen Mode’ to try that. Basically that’s cinema mode as immersive as possible.

However, if you want to check how first person games work in full VR mode, I would recommend one of the games below, they work in full VR out of the box.

Good games to start are (in no particular order):

Skyrim (original DX9 version is usually the better choice)
    Fallout 3
    Fallout New Vegas
    Fallout 4
    Portal
    Portal 2
    Left 4 Dead 2
    Mirror’s Edge
    Bioshock (DX9)
    Bioshock 2 (DX9)
    Bioshock Infinite
    Borderlands 2
    Borderlands Pre-Sequel
    Dishonored
    Deus Ex Human Revolutions
    Black Mesa Source
    Half-Life 2
    Half-Life 2 Episode 1
    Half-Life 2 Episode 2
    Aliens Colonial Marines
    Dear Esther (Source engine version)

Did you check the “Essential Hints” guide in the vorpX help? It explains the essential basics you have to know, e.g. what options you have if vorpX can’t automatically adjust the FOV for a game. Reading this guide really is essential (hence its name :) ).

Apart from that I would suggest to try Direct VR games first, which do everything automatically, so you just have to push a button after entering the game. Save the ones that require manual steps for later when you know a bit better how vorpX works.

BTW: the next vorpX version will have auto FOV for about 40 more games.

Good games to start are (in no particular order):

Skyrim (original DX9 version is usually the better choice)
    Fallout 3
    Fallout New Vegas
    Fallout 4
    Portal
    Portal 2
    Left 4 Dead 2
    Mirror’s Edge
    Bioshock (DX9)
    Bioshock 2 (DX9)
    Bioshock Infinite
    Borderlands 2
    Borderlands Pre-Sequel
    Dishonored
    Deus Ex Human Revolutions
    Black Mesa Source
    Half-Life 2
    Half-Life 2 Episode 1
    Half-Life 2 Episode 2
    Aliens Colonial Marines
    Dear Esther (Source engine version)
    The Stanley Parable
