Ralf: Question/Theory about this. I noticed that when the game installed, it also installed its own DirectX version. For me, after game install, that is when the non-display issues started. First time around, that was solved by windows doing an update to directx. Then it started displaying again. (the game itself wasn’t working yet, but at least VorpX was). When I had to re-install the game (and its directx), it stopped working again – for the most part.
Is it possible that the game’s directX is somehow different in some way, and its causing issues with VorpX for some people?
Just a theory, thinking out loud. I know little in this area, so I could be talking nonsense.

EDIT: Just saw you wrote something as I was writing this. I’ll leave this here cause I already wrote it.

haluzzak: I did eventually get it to work once last night. Didn’t do anything special, just rebooted plus all the known stuff discussed in many threads here. (Check out the discussion in the General forum) I haven’t been able to test enough yet to determine what is causing it to not show in the HMD yet. But this weekend should yield some results hopefully. It definitely started happening each time I installed the game and its DirectX. (I uninstalled and re-installed once) Most of the time, none of my VorpX games worked, then it was just RDR2 that didn’t work. But I don’t have enough tests yet to draw any conclusions about anything.

apollon01: I’ll try that too. I have an Odyssey+, you? Maybe some HMDs have different sensors.

Being at work all day having to wait to try it out again really sucks. ;) All I can do is write forum posts.
I love our little RDR2 support group. I feel like the recovering alcoholic with the most problems and the longest way to go.

Keeping my fingers extra-crossed that I can keep replicating whatever devil-magic got it working for me. This is exactly the type of game I live for. Long-haul, super immersive, gorgeous visuals, story-driven, free-roam RPG.

Couple of things I noticed last night:
    – When it worked, I was running it in a window at 1920×1440? res. It was non stretched, and worked great, so nice and crisp. I was terrified to full screen it in case it crashed but I’ll do more testing once I get a stable baseline.
    – When it crashed, it seemed like it was because the game kept defaulting to 4k resolution (my native). It apparently didn’t like the high res it kept wanting to use.
    – The VorpX thing about not showing in the headset seems like my major concern now as that was happening pretty much all the time. DirectX/VorpX combo related for sure, but we’ll see what more testing finds.

Can’t wait to do more testing tonight and lock this puppy down! I’ll jump through any series of hoops and hand waving I need to, as long as its replicatable. Lol.

Just want to say again AMAZING JOB to Ralf for pulling this all together! Game of the decade right here!

Hallelujah! I finally got it to work (in full vorpX glory) exactly once!
I have no idea what black magic series of events made it work, but it just did. Looks amazing in Z3D, played it for 45 min.

Ralf: Nope, didn’t do any modding.

Seems like some “all the stars align” process between VorpX, DirectX, SteamVR, Windows, rebooting, and the game/launcher.

I’m 100% sure I’ll keep running into this issue of the game not showing in the HMD 90% of the time, but at least I know it works on my system at least occasionally. So hopefully as things tighten up that will be more and more.

I’ll keep posting whatever hocus pocus I figure out.
(And try to replicate this somehow again)

Off to sacrifice a hamster, and then to bed. Try again tomorrow night!

Nope. I only got it to work a couple of times in the HMD before crashing.
Now it won’t show in the HMD anymore at all, even after rebooting many times. After 8 hours of this today I’m almost ready to give up for now.

Well after getting the game to how in the HMD 3 times out of 50, its now back to not showing the HMD after many attempts.

Wow what an ordeal. I finally got into the game using VorpX, however the game crashes to desktop in the intro screen. So I never even get to see any 3D, just a Z3D outline. But it gives me hope that eventually it will work.
Yes I get the same crash.

For anyone having similar issues, I’ll try to sum up things so far.
    – Need to run both Rockstar launcher and RDR2.exe as admin. The latter in compat settings.
    – Rebooting did seem to help once or twice.
    – DirectX 12 is definitely a factor in all this. After reinstalling (and re-downloading) the whole game, VorpX stopped working immediately in the HDM. (still hooked though). The same thing happened the first time as well. So whatever the game is installing (directx i would guess) is messing with VorpX a bit. At least for a while, or sporadically.
    – Rebooting seems to have fixed that (FOR NOW).
    – All the usual things like drivers, win updates, etc are essential.
    – I head bios updates are necessary for AMD machines.
    – Dellrifter, I’m at .449 for windows version. A bit ahead of you.

I’ll keep posting as I find out more.

Good to know thanks, we should all keep sharing info and we can get to the bottom of all this with Ralfs help of course.
I start “WMR for SteamVR”, and that opens the little black steamVR window too.

I think I’ve narrowed it down to something. It seems like the directx that gets installed with the game might be causing this lack of HMD display in VorpX.
When it wasn’t working before for me, a windows directx update is what fixed it. Now, just after installing RDR2 and its directx, all my vorpx games no longer show in the HMD. Which is what happened the first time I installed the game too.

I have done all windows updates.
I got it through epic games, so its not letting me run it through rockstar launcher. I can’t run as admin.

Wow Epic games is a collosal piece of sh!t. I uninstalled the launcher, thinking ok I will just run it through rockstar. Nope, it uninstalled all my epic games without telling me too. Unbelievable.

Haven’t been able to get it working yet, but its not VorpX. I’m now having straight up launcher issues, running it by itself. I ran the game fine a couple of days ago, now its not launching at all. Guess I’ll have to sift through the interwebs to find a solution to that first. Sigh. This game will be the end of me.

Just my two cents, but I think if you released it with the caveat that its “beta and glitchy” and only works sometime, with an expected update coming soon, that would make a lot of game fans here really really happy. Including me. :) :) :)
A somewhat playable RDR2 far far exceeds no RDR2 at all.
Your call, but I loved the beta testing idea.
