It‘s not supposed to be that way. If you have the game installed on a harddrive, try a SSD if possible to minimize hitches caused by streaming in new geometry/textures. Also try without any mods if you have mods installed and last but not least try to delete your fallout3.ini, the game will create a new one on start.

Thanks, but it isn’t any of those basic issues. And yeah it sure isn’t supposed to be that way, but the old engine used in FO3 was really, really awful about these sort of things. There have been major problems right since the beginning, and there are some solutions, such as FOSE plugins etc to try and correct it, but there can be hours and hour and hours of testing, and tweaking, and testing again, before you get it right, and “right” can be different for every configuration, video-card, etc. Throwing all the power in the world at it doesn’t make a difference, because they are fundamental game-engine issues. I was just hoping that maybe I wouldn’t have to go through all the trial-and-error and work of getting it to run correctly again; if maybe there was a new, easy, solution I didn’t know about. Maybe I should just wait for the Capitol Wasteland project to finish (or for Bethesda to finally release an “SE” version running on the FO4 engine, which has far fewer of these sort of issues).

OK, it was time for a long-overdue full clean install of Win10 anyway, so I did that and things work working better now. Don’t know what the problem was.

Fallout 3 is working and looks good, but has all the original problems that Fallout 3 had (I’m maintaining nearly 90fps even with vorpX activated, but it looks more like 15 or 20 fps while playing Fallout 3, which has all kinds of weird frame-rate issues, stuttering, etc.)

Rather than start a new thread, does anyone have a good fix for Fallout 3’s bizarre apparent frame-rate issues?

I have a feeling I’ll be using this quite bit in the future. I’ll give it a whirl with the Witcher 3 when I get time. Even with the Pimax 5K + HMD I now have, my old 1080p Sony Playstation 3D display in Above/Below mode is still much sharper, and hopefully I’ll be building another 3D home-theater soon using a 3D 1080p projector (historically I did my stereoscopic gaming on a 720p 3D projector using frame-packing mode, so very sharp and I only needed to drive games at 720p to be able to play them without at native resolution without any scaling – I put a lot of thought into that setup and it worked very well). Considering that so many games I enjoy really won’t translate well anyway to VR, it will be nice to continue to have the option to use my traditional displays.

Just a quick updated: After extensive testing it looks like the Pixax HMDs in particular have serious issues with AMD cards (the Pimax tool does not detect the HMD when connected to various AMD cards). I was able to borrow a lowly RTX 2070 for testing and all HMD detection settings were immediately resolved, so I ended up returning the 5700 XT. Too bad because the performance was good and the price in-line with what I wanted to pay. Have and Nvidia card on order but paying a lot more for it of course (especially as vendors are currently gouging for the RTX Super line of cards).

Yes, it builds the 3D scene using the in-game depth-maps, similar to TriDef “Power 3D” etc. So it does create the same types of halos/distortion as all other similar 3D methods. But, it’s really pretty darn good overall, with a lot of settings and can provide pretty darn good results in many cases. The lack of a performance hit is also great (running FO4 (even with uGrids set to 7), the Witcher 3, MEA, etc. at 2560×1440 on any reasonably modern card is easy, for example.)

Thank you! This is very interesting. I have finally gotten an actual VR HMD, but have played games using traditional stereoscopic tools for almost 10 years now (TriDef mostly). Now TriDef is gone and Nvidia is officially dropping all support for 3D from their drivers as well. That leaves only SuperDepth3D (BTW, this has become quite good. It’s got artifacts of course, since it is geometry 3D, but it’s really quite acceptable and has essentially zero performance impact – there is also a VR module for that project). It’s really nice to see this, as there are games I might play in a group-setting on a 3D DLP with multiple-persons using 3D glasses. Obviously can’t do that with a VR headset.

I’ve posted a few times about vorpX adding support for traditional 3D displays. It would open up the product for a LOT of users.

Same question about using vorpX with standard controllers: Just got the last components of my VR rig but NOT motion controllers. I’ll probably get some in the future, but the vast majority of the games I play really aren’t suited to motion controllers, or use their own dedicated controllers (FFB wheels / pedals for racing sims). So mostly I’m in it for the head-tracking and 3D. I have little interest, for now, in the motion controller aspect of all this.

So if someone could just quickly point out, for us newbies, where in vorpX we set things up for use with Keyboard and Mouse, or Xbox controllers, that would really be appreciated.

Well, I went with the AMD 5700 XT. Price to performance is usually how I buy cards, and it seem to currently be the winner in that category. It is much faster than my old r9 390, which already ran very well. It’s also pretty quiet, which is surprising, so maybe I won’t have to invest in a liquid cooler for it.

Also just received my Pimax 5K Plus HMD and will hopefully have time to at least get it setup this weekend. Gotta finally buy vorpX also, but will most likely get it all setup with something that supports VR out of the box (PCars 2 maybe. Would rather use it in AC since it has vastly superior physics and FFB, but I hear that’s a bit tricker on the VR end so I’ll probably tackle the tricky things later).

Thanks for the responses in this thread, they were helpful!

Are you only interested in isometric RPGs, or do you enjoy other RPGs?

I enjoy many of the classic-style isometric RPGs, but also enjoy many of the newer ones. Probably the best “blend” of traditional and new was Dragon Age Origins, which I would whole-heartedly recommend even to people who “only like real isometric-style RPGs. Other than that one things go non-traditional pretty quickly, but if you can adjust don’t hesitate to try the rest of the Dragon Age series, the Mass Effect series, Fallout 3, NV, and 4, or even Skyrim (not a very good RPG, but a nice open world wandering-around kind of thing), and don’t forget Witcher 2 and 3. All good, or even great, RPGs that you might enjoy.

Oh, and I don’t know if it will work with VorpX, I’m not quite there yet, but NWN2 is still a fairly good RPG even by today’s standards, and it did work with TriDef so there is at least some chance you can get it to work with VorpX.

    @mr_spongeworthy

Do you still play 3D games on your monitor ?

If so NVidia has 100’s of community fixed 3D Vision games and hacks before making a decision I would check the NVidia forums.

IMO this would get you the best of both worlds. VorpX and 3D Vision.

Yeah, I considered that, but NVIDIA is dropping 3D Vision support completely a the driver level, so that’s not really a consideration any longer. Can’t believe they are doing that, it’s nuts.

It’s also another reason that vorpX should consider support traditional 3D modes instead of just VR equipment, IMHO.

Getting back to the original question, there are no specific features from either AMD or nvidia that give you better performance in VR vs. normal rendering.

OK, that’s more or less what I’ve been reading, but it’s always good to get feedback from people actually doing it.

I’m currently leaning towards the Radeon 5700 XT at this point as they currently appear to be neck-and-neck or outrunning the 2070-super by small amounts in many real-world benchmarks and is a bit cheaper. I can invest the difference in a liquid-cooling adapter (I currently run an r9 390 with an adapter designed for Corsair coolers; a budget solution yes, but it dramatically reduces fan noise). I’m also really liking what I’m seeing with AMDs new driver-level upscale-with-sharpen features.

Thanks, but I’m also looking for any brand-specific features I might otherwise be unaware of. For example, there are various frame rate amplification technologies, that try to help achieve that magic 90fps minimum for VR.

Just thinking that there might be some real advantages to one brand over the other in VR, even if the cards otherwise perform more or less the same.

Well, it’s not on the list, but I would like to be able to add custom “super resolutions”. As it stands, if you have, for example, a 1080p display you’ll only get two “super resolutions” above that. It would be great to be able to enter whatever arbitrary values I want.

Thanks for the replay. That sounds like a nice set of tools. Don’t know how much use I’ll make of things like on-screen keyboards as I have a tendency to want my games to be as immersive as possible and often use mods or shortcuts of other types that allow me to completely hide even the in-game UI as much / often as possible. But I’m sure I’ll try out all of the features before deciding on a set I like. It would be interesting to try playing a game like DAO using the motion controllers. I can’t imagine how that would work since it is so keyboard/mouse focused, but it will be interesting to give it a try.

Really good to see a built-in gamma, saturation and sharpness controls, a that’s all I use ReShade for about 50% of the time, and simpler is always better. Other times I use ReShade to do things like add Film Grain or AA. Any problems with ReShade and Vorpx that you know of? I know that ENB often interfered with TriDef, and in the distant past even ReShade would occasionally cause issues.

Great to hear that Pimax support is being added. I’ve been waiting for a wide-fov HMD to become available at a reasonable price and it looks like the Pimax 5K is exactly what I’ve been sitting on my hands for.
