If you are usiung a DK2 like me, the powerplug of the DK2 can be unplugged. The DK2 will still work on usb power, but the screen will be darker.

ps. I know in some way this is pretty lame :P , but this can be applied to all your games :D

So I’m just wondering if this is just me or if anyone else notices this. Is it normal for games to appear generally washed out or too bright?

I don’t think it really bothered me at first cause I was just thrilled to have any games working in VR at all, but maybe now I’m just getting picky, hah.

Games like skyrim, alien isolation, or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. seem to have a lower contrast or something, especially Skyrim seems pretty washed out. Call of Pripyat seems to have this problem the least, but even adjusting gamma sliders doesn’t seem to make any difference as if it’s just disabled.
I was thinking that maybe the darkness levels in games just ‘appears’ brighter since theres no ambient light hitting the “screen” (as you are locked into a headset) or maybe because you’re so much closer to all the detail or something so everything is just more visible.

Anybody know any tricks to maybe get the darks to look more dark?

I’ve created and added a profile that enables Geo3D for Layers of Fear. Start the game in the directory with Layers of Fearsub.exe, you might have to change the gamma in game as it was too dark for me in the Rift compared to a monitor.
I can run the game with all settings on high and use DSR on 1.5 without frame rate loss on a GTX 970.
There are some graphical glitches which seem to be based on positional headtracking so you might want to disable it if you can stomach it and it bothers you.

    Hi,

I’m trying the Steam version of Dark Messiah of Might and Magic and it won’t start. It just hangs up in the Oculus waiting screen saying Please wait, mm.exe is taking a while to load.

All other supported games work just fine.
I’m using the latest version of VorpX with a GeForce 1070.

    Any tips?

Part 5: Sacrifices must be made!

You’ve added higher rez textures. You beefed up the flora. You improved Skyrim’s outdated memory and core/thread management. The game looks fantastic and you are ready for MOAR!!! Now it’s time to add Framekiller #3. The lighting and weather mods.

There’s just one problem. You find that when you add a lighting/weather mod like Enhanced Lighting and FX, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/27043/? your framerate heads into the toilet and you start crashing like a Boss. WHAT VILE SORCERY IS THIS!?!?!?! THIS MOD SUCKS!!!

No, it doesn’t and Unfortunately it’s the sorcery of simple math. You have hit the limits of the mighty Titan, at least as far as Skyrim’s ability to use it is concerned. With three of the most intensive GPU hogs (By their powers combined!) we can use, added to Skyrim’s kludged 32 bit code and the processing overhead VorpX places on the system, You done sailed into the perfect modding storm. Talos frowns on your Shennanigans and Clavicus Vile revels in your suffering.

Now what? Once you’ve seen the glory, there’s no going back. You’ll always know how good it looked and be miserable playing at lesser visuals knowing what could be. Actually, you’ve only seen ‘part’ of the glory.

(Puts on Matrix hat) Neo, what if I told you that I currently have 106 mods loaded up, Skyrim looks better than I have ever seen it, there’s no crashing involved and I’m still pulling 43-45FPS in all but the traditional trouble areas? This is the art of compromise and balance. Give some here to gain some there. Pay attention to the things that matter, etc.

Here’s what I discovered. Skyrim’s code, more than anything else is your real limiter. Not the GPU. Not the CPU. Although they certainly play a part. Yet when I was back to a slow, stuttering mess, the absolute worst I saw in Afterburner’s monitors was the Titan spiking once into the 80% use range and the CPU into the 70s. The Titan COULD handle a lot more mods. VorpX could process them just fine. But 32 bit DX9 Skyrim CANNOT.

First is the memory cap. With the HD textures, SFO and ELFX, I hit the 4 gig memory cap during heavy weather events and crashed. and even without the weather events going on, Skyrim simply was not processing the data it need to at the rate it needed to through/with VorpX.

Now is this a VorpX issue? No, because flipping over to Fallout 4 in Geometry mode with ALL the sliders maxed out and weather/lighting/flora mods and textures running, the Titan cruises at that 45FPS without a problem. The major difference is 32 bit DX9 vs 64 bit DX11 and far older and more inefficient coding.

Yea so what do we do now?

You mod smarter so that terrible and Mighty Talos, he who is both man and DIVINE! (hat tip to Heimsker) will haZ a happy.

Remember back to what I refered to earlier. What matters to you most? Do you need 2048 rez textures? or even 1024? Do you need a massive increase in the variety of flora to fill the spaces as you look across Tamriel or just better versions of whats already there? Are you satisfied with the stock weather or do you want more storm in your life? And what combo of the above will get Talos to his happy place?

You might notice that I left out lighting. Because IMO, that one isn’t negotiable. Skyrim’s stock lighting works, but it washes everything out. Nothing is ever truly dark in Skyrim, day or night, north or south, mountaintop or deepest dungeon. It’s at worst, eternal twilight. For me, that’s a ‘must fix’ at the cost of anything else because properly lit, even lower rez textures look a lot better.

    Part 4: INI files

First, go to your C drive and in documents/my games/skyrim, you’ll find skyrim.ini and skyrimPrefs.ini (depending on your system, the .ini extention may or may not be shown. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Back them up now.
    ——-

Once thats done, welcome yourself to either agony or extacy because you’ll either help your cause considerably or hose your game to the point you’ll be glad you made a backup to revert to.

When you open Skyrim and see the options tag, the screen that lets you set low/med/high/ultra detail etc. is editing these files. It’s a dumbed down front end for them. All direct editing of the files does is bypass that and give you the keys to the kingdom. And thats why you can really hose things. Using the panel, the worst you’ll do is make something ugly or slow. With direct editing, you can prevent the game from working at all.

Fortunately, Skyrim has been around long enough that many people already learned the hard way what NOT to do and what works in different situations. The answers can be found in the links below.

    Nexus Skyrim INI Tweaks
    http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/articles/1153/?

First, let me save you some time and just say, Do all the listed edits given on the Nexus ini page. The most important of them all is the Multithread/Havok edits. They will suddenly open up a lot of headroom for you as Skyrim is now able to use more core/threads. But don’t think you will suddenly be able to max everything. At best, you will get more smoothness, less pop in and a few FPS. Which your future mods will be eating into, consuming entirely and asking for seconds. This goes back to my earlier comments about building a foundation and attending to the details. What I’m doing here is simply giving a general view/direction to learn from and pointing you to it as again, explaining all these in detail isn’t the point of this post and would take tens of thousands of words to do. that info has already been posted at the links above so no point in repeating it.

Read the STEP and Nvidia guides once you have the basics down as you want to get further into customizing your game. For sane modders, the STEP guide is the Bible. It is the result of many people working to have the most stable and enjoyable Skyrim experience possible. The guide will not steer you wrong.

However, everyone is different. Some, like me, will put up with a lot to achieve certain goals with the game. For me it is max detail at max FPS. I’ll deal with lower framerates and even occasional instability because I don’t get VR/motion sick and I want to see how far the game can be pushed/how well it can look and play at the same time. But for many, thats the opposite of what they want. They simply want a stable game that looks better than Bethesda delivered and that stock settings can provide. As I said before, it’s all about tradeoffs and only you can decide which ones you are willing to make.

So far, the Titan X Pascal has performed like a champ and handled some real framekillers that few believed could be employed with VR/VorpX. But it has it’s limits. Even when overclocked as far as locked voltage and air cooling will allow. Yes, it is a monster. No there is nothing faster -atleast without SLI- but modded Skyrim has humbled every card to date and the Titan is no different. It just lets you pretend you’re Capt. Kirk and boldly go where no man has gone before. Including green chicks if you count Orcs…

We now come to the point of deciding which tradeoffs to make.

Right now, we have the game looking far better than the Bethesda version. We have a pretty consistent and smooth game that can be played and enjoyed all day long. And for many, thats the end of the road in a thusfar painless process. If you skip my ranting and simply install the mods thus far and make the basic ini changes from the Nexus page, you’ll spend less than an hour of your life and take massive advantage of what the new Titan can give you. And it just gave you a LOT you could have never done without it.

Or you can come to the Dark Side, Luke. Screw Kirk and his green women. There’s pain ahead. Untold misery. Crashing. Black screens. countless hours pissed away. Headaches. Frustration…

…God how I love it so.

    Hey everyone.

got a problem I was hoping someone might be able to help me with.

Dark Souls 3 on Vorpx is running well overall – but there is a constant studder, noticeable when moving, but VERY noticeable when standing still.

When I have the VorpX panel up, though.. the game runs 100% smooth. Is there anything I can do about this?

I am open to anything – even if it means just finding a way to drag the VorpX menu to a corner each time I play then just play with it off to the side, out of view.

Anyone know what I should do? Really wanting to play Dark Souls 3 but this is really detracting from the experience.

TLDR: Game runs smooth when VorpX in game menu is up, on screen. When I turn the menu off, the game begins to studder.. very strange situation, looking for help.

    Thanks everyone!

I just dusted off my trusty DK2, which suffers heavily from black smearing in dark scenes. Older Vorpx versions could fix this, but in the latest the ‘fix black smear’ ootions doesn’t seem to do anything. Is this a known issue or am I missing something?

TL;DR: Turn back now, it’s not worth it. It’s complicated and the game isn’t a good VR experience.

I spent all day getting City Car Driving to work, thought I’d put together a guide for anyone interested. You should know that there are a few things which in my opinion make it unplayable:-

    – The performance is BAD. The game is poorly optimised and even with everything on low I averaged around 30FPS (G3D) 35 FPS (Z-Buffer) with a GTX 970.
    – Positional tracking is reversed with no fix that I can find. If you lean in, it leans you backwards.
    – Lots of problems with scale. You may have more luck messing with VorpX settings than I did. I got close, but it still looked off.
    – Head tracking will only work if the right mouse button is held down to activate free look in the game. This is hard-coded, and the only workaround is complicated (included below).
    – Vertical view is locked after a certain point. When you try to look up/down too far, it will stick and mess up your orientation. You’ll have to constantly re-centre your view.

    The Guide:-

    1) Create a new profile for the game using “Dark Messiah Of Might & Magic” as a template. Leave ‘Keep Game Specific Options’ unticked.

    2) Launch the game and set Graphics Mode to Directx9
Be sure to unbind the ‘L’ key, we’ll need it later.

    3) The only way to get head tracking working correctly in-game is to:

Find startup.tcl and open it with Notepad (Typically in the folder *\City Car Driving\data\scripts).
    Edit the lines
    .map “relmouse0:btn1.down” “rmbDown”
    .map “relmouse0:btn1.up” “rmbUp”
    .map “relmouse0:btn1.pressed” “rmbPressed”

    to

    .map “keyb0:L.down” “rmbDown”
    .map “keyb0:L.up” “rmbUp”
    .map “keyb0:L.pressed” “rmbPressed”

Now save this. If you have problems saving it, then save it to desktop and drag the file back into the folder.

This will change the Free Look key to ‘L’ for the next part, as the game doesn’t allow you to mess around with emulating mouse clicks.

Now download and install a program called JoyToKey. Set up your Gamepad or Steering wheel and choose a button you want to use to unlock your view, then double click it. In this screen add L into the top box on the left side, and then tick ‘Toggle between On and Off’.

Now you can finally turn Free Look on without holding our mouse constantly. Just push the button you set a couple of times and it will turn on correct tracking.

It’s also useful to choose another button to assign to re-centre the view (you’ll be needing it a lot). Do the same, but this time choose Mouse from the edit screen and just tick ‘left’ under Mouse Click.

    4) Set FOV ingame. Note that you will have to do this every time for each new car. I found 100 was a good value. Follow this Youtube guide to set your FOV : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUE3MD3ykMI (You likely will need to run the game as Administrator for this to save without errors – Right-click the shortcut -> Run as Administrator.)

    5) Now setup VorpX as normal with the settings in-game. Every time you bring up the VorpX menu you will have to push your freelook button again a couple of times to re-enable tracking.

If you’re determined enough to want to try this, then this should get you running. They’ve stated they’re not updating Oculus support again, so this is the only option. But really, trust me, it isn’t worth it ;)

Any chance of getting this working with DAOC? I keep getting the error game.dll is taking too long to respond. There is a login patcher that the game loads from that may be getting in the way. I believe similar to most MMO’s. I tried multiple ways but needed to create a shortcut, set run as admin mode, and then run the shortcut as admin just to get to the error. Would LOVE to see this classic available one day.

bigthriller, I got The Long Dark to work with vorpX by doing the following:

    1. Create a vorpX desktop shortcut
    2. Right-click on the shortcut and select “Properties
    3. In the Shortcut tab, find the “Target” text field
    4. At the end of the Target text field entry, add “-force-d3d9” without the quotes.
    5. Use this shortcut to start The Long Dark and it should hook.

This software really kicks ass, it just needs a bit of practice to make it work at its full potential. I got nearly native results with a bunch of amazing game (i wrote a small list on another thread). I am collecting VR games on Steam so i made quite a lot of experience with VorpX as well and i can tell that beside these ones, which i consider the more performant, there’s many many others that may have few glitches or minor incompatibilities but still worth to be played in VR with Vorpx because they are 100% more engaging than the monitor in any case. This is the most honest review i can do after 2 months practicing with Vorpx and many many games. I cut&paste the list of my favourites here:

    My list of favourites:

    Dishonored
    Outlast
    Mirror’s Edge
    Bioshiock Infinite
    Aliens: Colonial Marines
    Shadow Warrior
    The Darkness 2
    Dear Esther *
    Life is Strange *
    Dead Space 3 *
    Max Payne 3 *

    * Unlock prosiontal tracking form advanced options

These are my favourite perfomance wise. I would add also:

Alan Wake, which doesn’t suppuort geometry 3d or positional tracking but runs so well with Z-Buffer that you won’t miss the 2.

If you have a good pc and are interested on 2 or 3 games above you shouldn’t hesitate because, once learned how it works, you definitely won’t be disappointed in my opinion.

Hi All, I just bought VorpX with the sole purpose of playing outlast in VR (which I hear works quite well) – however the game failes to launch whenever the watcher is running, nor does it work with the watcher disabled and a shortcut from the shortcut generator on the taskbar.

    HTC VIVE

    Comp Spec:-
    Windows 10 Pro N (WinVer 1151 – OS Build 10586.420)
    Asus Z170 Deluxe
    Asus STRIX 980ti 6GB (Nvidia Driver 365.19)
    32GB DDR4 (corsair)
    500GB (SSD)
    2TB (Seagate mech)

I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong here, but I’ve tried every executable in the outlast folder (win 32 and 64 binaries) and nothing seems to work, the HMD doesn’t even go dark like it’s trying to load something.

If I use the watcher and go straight to the OLGame.exe (Win32 folder) I get the error message “Windows cannot access the specified device, You may not have appropreate permissions to access the device”.

Please note: I have tried starting VorpX as administrator also (Start > All Apps > Start vorpX > as admin), the results are the same as above – permissions error.

If I pause the watcher the game launches as normal.

Can someone please let me know what I’m doing wrong, I’d dying to play this in VR!!

Thanks in advance for any help!

I cannot play Amnesia Dark Descent at all. Both eyes get flashing flickering of the game and the frame rates is so low it would be less than 1 frame per second. Im running win 10 64 bit. AMD fx-8350 Black edition and an R9 390x video card. Quake 2 does the exact same thing. I have tried many settings to no avail. Games like Skyrim and fallout 4 run just fine. It seems to be a possible issue with Open GL not really sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
