Hi ralf,
Just want to let you know i finally got it working with outlast. I don’t know how, but i read up some guide: disable steam overlay and desktop home threate and surprisingly it works. Values around 120 to 150 is comfortable for me. 160 or more is unbearable and screen starts to flip 180 deg upwards. Now the only problem is the game menu zoomed-in, is it intentional?
Gameplay inside outlast seems fine for me. Maybe full vr works for me afterall, just have to do some tweaking or stuff.
Game setting optimizer works by the way. But not sure for other games such as battlefield 4. This is the only game i got it first working with vorpX.
I quite confused with the extended mode and direct mode you talking about. Not sure what mode i am. But pretty sure i am in extended mode. Just got htc vive headset sorry newbie here :).
Hi again, Thanks ralf.
I tried outlast without htc vive. Everything seems normal, fov all working. 190 fov turns your screen upside down. 130 fov seems to be the sweet spot.
The only problem is that i notice all games that i run seems to be unaffected by fov changes.
Need any help from htc vive users who use vorpX. :( stuck at this problem or issue for 3 days on.
edit: the only thing that work for me is the virtual cinema mode. But for full VR, it’s extreme zoomed in
Sometimes the optimizer may fail if it can’t find the directory where the ini is stored for a game or the file itself is write protected. Some mod managers for Bethesda games for example can cause that. Another potential cause of failure may be GOTY editions of games, which sometimes use different storage locations that the Optimizer does not know.
For Outlast the ini is expected to be [Documents]\My Games\Outlast\OLGame\Config\OLGame.ini. If it is stored in a different location in your case, the Optimizer will fail.
The FOV related ini-values the optimizer changes for this game are: DefaultFOV, RunningFOV, CamcorderNVMaxFOV, CamcorderMaxFOV.
If the optimizer fails for some reason, set the first two to 130 manually and the camcorder ones to 110.
You can create copies of existing profiles on the local profiles page. To do that select an existing profile and then click the button labeled “Create a new profile based on this one”. Doing that with a random profile before you exit vorpX will suffice to save all settings to disk that you made before. You can safely remove the newly created copy again afterwards.
For Outlast the Game Optimizer should be able to handle FOV, Battlefield 4 only takes the ini setting into account in multiplayer. Single player FOV can not be changed unfortunately, Flawless Widescreen might help with single player.
Hi! thanks for the reply.
1)
Not sure what you meant by “performing any action that writes settings datebase to disk in the config app before closing vorpX.” Are you saying i have to edit the ini file or something directly in the folder? Is it located in the settings folder?
“Just creating a copy of a random exisiting profile and deleting it again afterwards will suffice.”
Hmm, i never encounter this before. The profile are you referring to local or cloud profile?.
I glad the issue will be fixed in the next version. Hopefully, because i facing issue such as in-game vorpx and game setting optimizer not saving at all. Is there anyway i can edit the file directly to prevent it from overwriting it?
2)
“A handful of games may overwrite those changes again if you change game options ingame afterwards, so ideally avoid adjusting video options in such cases after applying the Optimizer settings.”
For battlefield 4, even through i change FOV in-game. It doesn’t work at all. It still zoomed-in and unplayable. Back to the point 1 i just made, i couldn’t adjust the fov higher or lower in game settings optimizer due to the setting-reset issue.
“For games without the option to adjust the FOV with the Optimizer you either have to use the workarounds vorpX provides, edit ini files manually or use an external tool.”
Okay thanks, some games such as outlast won’t allow you to adjust fov. So i guess i have to tweak it by ini file. The only problem is the game setting optimizer, the fov doesn’t work, maybe it being overwritten or something.
3) “Unsupported games: Try to create a new profile based on an existing one in the config app (Local Profiles page) for games that vorpX does not support.”
I notice games boot up with vorpX if they run in dx9. Games with dx10, dx11 will not work at all and instead will display on your monitor instead of the hmd. Need some htc vive users to confirm it?
Thanks for the reply.
Hi everyone,
I’m a htc vive user here and facing issues with vorpX.
1) Settings not saved: I don’t know if this only happens to me or not. But i noticed my in-game vorpX menu is not saved at all. For example, i change to virtual camera mode and next time i boot up my game again. it revert back to non-virtual camera mode.
Not only this, i face issues in game setting optimizer as well. I can’t seem to change the fov as well (default:120) and will keep reverting back to default as well even through i click optimize settings and apply & close, no effect.
2) Zoomed in issue: This is common to newbies, i fully aware i have to set the fov higher or something or i will face this issue. But however it doesn’t help at all. I set fov to 120 or maybe higher in game setting optimizer and nothing have changed, not only that it will keep reverting to default 120 as i mentioned in point 1. All games such as battlefield 4 and outlast are affected.
3) Game compatibility issue: i don’t know if i the only one who face this. But i noticed games that ran higher than dx9 will not work and won’t boot up with vorpX. They will display on your monitor instead of your HMD. For example, i change dx11 to dx9 settings in far cry 3 and surprisingly it booted up with vorpx. But for games such as team fortress 2 it doesn’t even start at all.
Please help, i have spent around 2 days or so but couldn’t get around this problem. I a newbie and have much to learn. The only solution so far i thought of is to reinstall but i fear that my key might not work again that have sent to me via email.
Hey, small updated, just turned off the beta client, went to a stable SteamVR version, and the same issue is happening. Tried out games Outlast, Portal, Portal 2, and Fallout 4. None of them worked and we got the same error. Unknown error (308).
Ive almost got outlast working perfectly but. when i go into the game i notice that it was all black. i tried to edge peek out and now i see the game. Can anyone tell me why this is? playing outlast edge peeked wouldnt be as fun. I have now tried Deus Ex human. and it has the exact same issue of only being able to see the game in edge peek. can someone plz help?
This software really kicks ass, it just needs a bit of practice to make it work at its full potential. I got nearly native results with a bunch of amazing game (i wrote a small list on another thread). I am collecting VR games on Steam so i made quite a lot of experience with VorpX as well and i can tell that beside these ones, which i consider the more performant, there’s many many others that may have few glitches or minor incompatibilities but still worth to be played in VR with Vorpx because they are 100% more engaging than the monitor in any case. This is the most honest review i can do after 2 months practicing with Vorpx and many many games. I cut&paste the list of my favourites here:
My list of favourites:
Dishonored
Outlast
Mirror’s Edge
Bioshiock Infinite
Aliens: Colonial Marines
Shadow Warrior
The Darkness 2
Dear Esther *
Life is Strange *
Dead Space 3 *
Max Payne 3 *
* Unlock prosiontal tracking form advanced options
These are my favourite perfomance wise. I would add also:
Alan Wake, which doesn’t suppuort geometry 3d or positional tracking but runs so well with Z-Buffer that you won’t miss the 2.
If you have a good pc and are interested on 2 or 3 games above you shouldn’t hesitate because, once learned how it works, you definitely won’t be disappointed in my opinion.

All these games works great with 970 and Vive at 1920×1400 with medium detail setting or so.
Hi All, I just bought VorpX with the sole purpose of playing outlast in VR (which I hear works quite well) – however the game failes to launch whenever the watcher is running, nor does it work with the watcher disabled and a shortcut from the shortcut generator on the taskbar.
HTC VIVE
Comp Spec:-
Windows 10 Pro N (WinVer 1151 – OS Build 10586.420)
Asus Z170 Deluxe
Asus STRIX 980ti 6GB (Nvidia Driver 365.19)
32GB DDR4 (corsair)
500GB (SSD)
2TB (Seagate mech)
I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong here, but I’ve tried every executable in the outlast folder (win 32 and 64 binaries) and nothing seems to work, the HMD doesn’t even go dark like it’s trying to load something.
If I use the watcher and go straight to the OLGame.exe (Win32 folder) I get the error message “Windows cannot access the specified device, You may not have appropreate permissions to access the device”.
Please note: I have tried starting VorpX as administrator also (Start > All Apps > Start vorpX > as admin), the results are the same as above – permissions error.
If I pause the watcher the game launches as normal.
Can someone please let me know what I’m doing wrong, I’d dying to play this in VR!!
Thanks in advance for any help!
Head movement translates into jerky screen movement. It’s not smooth, it looks like the screen is always shifting by a bunch of pixels at once instead of one.
tried all vorpx settings and nothing helped.
it’s not performance related.
Outlast was one of the reasons I bought vorpx so help is much appreciated!

Any suggestions to making this game perform better with vorpx? The title screen is so pushed forward that I can’t even go into the options to tweak settings. Is there something I’m missing? I thought this game was supported. I loaded the vorpx settings for Outlast, but between the menu and the way head movement works, it seems pretty unplayable.
Mirrror’s Edge, Outlast, The Darkness 2, Aliens Colonial Marines, Dishonored, Bioshock Infinite works great with Geometry and positional tracking support (the ones i have). I would dare saying they look like native Vr on a good rig. Others like Dead Space 3 still kick ass with Geometry but have no positional tracking.
Points of view.. my games work great.
I just tried deus ex human revolution. It’s working, but took more than one hour to optimize via vorps settings, in game. And synchronisation is bugging with xbox controler, I must play directly on my keyboard.
And must notice that the quality of the textures is lower than half life 2 (2004) in VR (that is not requiering vorpx). I feel like playing a game of 2000 and not 2011…
I don’t like playing Deus Ex on the Vive so much. Which means that in my opinion that’s not one of the best VR adaptation. To see what Vorpx can do you should try other games especially Dishonored, Outlast, Bioshock Infinte, Aliens Colonial Marines, The Darkness 2… These are the ones i have offering best perfomance and easy configurations. Visually, they look great. But you will need a powerful rig to play in VR while keeping high resolution (1920×1440) and in game detail. Then it’s all about teaking and the way each games performs in VR. Some games may not be perfect but still highly playable, i would say Max Payne 3 and Duke Nukem Forever for example. Basic configuration is similar in most games but then you will see there’s always one or other little thing that can be fixed or adjusted to achieve the best experience.
Dude i tried Human Revolution: Directors Cut and it’s seems to be working quite well. It was one of the first games i tried and i couldn’t configure it properly that time. For your control problems i suggest to partially override the controller: both sticks but not the button. Then fine tune the sensibility of each sticks until it works well and do the same with head tracking sensibility. About the visual performance, i am getting very good results with gtx970. I set the resolution to 1920×1440, Fov 110, asyncronous time warp deactivated, lowered in game details. Then do the usual things like adjust the 3d strenght and image zoom. I just played a bit, i need further testing but i would say that this way it was working very well, and the game looked and sounded better than ever in this new prospective. I hope the vr gameplay will keep up but everything seems good so far!
