Did you check the “Essential Hints” guide in the vorpX help? It explains the essential basics you have to know, e.g. what options you have if vorpX can’t automatically adjust the FOV for a game. Reading this guide really is essential (hence its name :) ).

Apart from that I would suggest to try Direct VR games first, which do everything automatically, so you just have to push a button after entering the game. Save the ones that require manual steps for later when you know a bit better how vorpX works.

BTW: the next vorpX version will have auto FOV for about 40 more games.

Good games to start are (in no particular order):

Skyrim (original DX9 version is usually the better choice)
    Fallout 3
    Fallout New Vegas
    Fallout 4
    Portal
    Portal 2
    Left 4 Dead 2
    Mirror’s Edge
    Bioshock (DX9)
    Bioshock 2 (DX9)
    Bioshock Infinite
    Borderlands 2
    Borderlands Pre-Sequel
    Dishonored
    Deus Ex Human Revolutions
    Black Mesa Source
    Half-Life 2
    Half-Life 2 Episode 1
    Half-Life 2 Episode 2
    Aliens Colonial Marines
    Dear Esther (Source engine version)
    The Stanley Parable

Thank you for the information. I got it to work in Dishonored and Portal 2. I also got it to kind of work in Destiny 2. It is not good in WoW but if they fix it like some on the forums are saying then I will enjoy the program for what it is. Worth the money if they keep making improvements. Makes non VR games work in VR so I can see why you are praising it as this is no easy feat. Interesting how they get it to work. A lot of adjustments which is nice so once you learn the software you can make the game look the way you want it too. The biggest issue is the UI in every game.

Third person games like Diablo 3 or WoW usually start in cinema mode. You can switch to full VR mode in the vorpX menu (DEL key), but that doesn’t necessarily make much sense for every game. Diablo 3 for example has an isometric camera perspective looking down on the playfield, so it’s best best played in cinema mode. vorpX cannot change the actual game mechanics of a game.

However, for first person games, especially those with Direct VR (like Portal 2), the experience comes quite close to native VR games. Portal 2 does not run on a virtual cinema screen with vorpX, it takes you into the game exactly like a native VR game, even including basic roomscale capabilities in that particular case.

Good games to get started (all with Direct VR support) are listed below. Later, when you know a bit better what vorpX can and cannot do and how it works, you will also be able to bring other first person games close to that.

    Borderlands 2
    Borderlands Pre-Sequel
Skyrim (original DX9 version is usually the better choice)
    Bioshock (DX9)
    Bioshock 2 (DX9)
    Bioshock Infinite
    Dishonored
    Fallout 3
    Fallout New Vegas
    Fallout 4
    Portal
    Portal 2
    Left 4 Dead 2
    Mirror’s Edge
    Deus Ex Human Revolutions
    Black Mesa Source
    Half-Life 2
    Half-Life 2 Episode 1
    Half-Life 2 Episode 2
    Aliens Colonial Marines
    Dear Esther (Source engine version)

I guess I don’t get what this software is for as all it seems to do is add Cinema mode but I could already do this with Oculus Rift software and any game I own. I would like to give this software the kind of praises you are but I just purchased it today and feel like I wasted $42. Does VorpX do anything besides Cinema mode for games? So far Portal 2, Diablo 3, and World of Warcraft tried and all of them give me Cinema mode with head tracking. If this is it I would rather play on a monitor. Please let me know what I am doing wrong. Portal 2 was the best of the group as you could scan and then it gives you more of a 3D look but you are still looking through a 4:3 screen.

Just an update on lenova if when starting mixed reality portal if ur choosing seated look left and right but dont look down at floor if u do when u play halo recruit you will be viewing from floor and tracking wont work, now i got halo recruit to work properly . As for steam vr i can only use the big screen program and i used iut to play eso in 2d for 3 hours straight. The text chat is super clear and the sides of screen arent blurry i can see the whole screen perfectly and the screen door effect isnt noticeable even in white screens u can barely make out pixels. It is also so light and comfortable with no light leakage from nose area. I recommend this hmd i hope my controller tracking is issue with iogear bluetooth, if not i will return and
get a replacement. As yet no vorpx so no 3d sigh

    Hello everyone :-)

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read through this!

I’m having an issue with Portal 2, where basically I can configure everything just fine for the game to run under Vorpx, and I’m even able to launch the game successfully, start up a new game, but after the first few frames of the game appear, the game basically hangs/freezes, and I have to close out the application from the computer side. I have tried fresh installs of Portal 2, but to no avail. I’d love some suggestions / help with this! I’ve been able to play Skyrim just fine, along with Fallout 4. This is the first game I’m having this problem with.

I am able to run Portal 2 on my desktop without Vorpx running, just to note.

    Thanks again everyone!

Edit: I am using a Vive (and I have all Vorpx settings set accordingly). My system specs are: i7-4770, 32GB ram, NVidia GTX 1080.

Hi, I’m trying to figure out what’s wrong with my setup. Vorpx hooks into BF4 and it automatically attaches the mouse to headtracking. However, no matter what I do to “3d reconstruction,” there is no change. If I turn it on to Z normal or Z adaptive, I see no 3d effect. If I move any of the sliders, there is no change. If I load up Portal 2, I do see a 3d effect and moving the slider will change the intensity. What’s wrong with BF4?

Yeah forget that sequel I will just play the first one, I hope that Prey is in Geometry 3D!!! Also please play Sanctum 2 – it’s excellent!

I heard Shadow warrior 2 works with Vorpx and also seems a good game…
How about mass effect 3? It should be half polished by now with all the updates?!?
It’s a shame that I played all the best games prior to getting my Pimax (half life, deus ex, portal, etc.)

Anyway I hope Fallout 4 will keep me going after Dishonored!

The best games to start with are undoubtedly those with Direct VR support. After applying Direct VR these have perfect 1:1 head tracking and perfect FOV without the need for any further setup. In *some* cases Direct VR even provides basic roomscale, i.e. you can walk around a bit more freely than with the normal vorpX positional tracking.

    In no particular order:

Bioshock 1 (original version in DX9 mode)
Bioshock 2 (original version in DX9 mode)
    Bioshock Infinite
    Borderlands 2
    Borderlands Pre-Sequel
Skyrim (original DX9 version is best for VorpX)
    Fallout 3
    Fallout New Vegas
    Fallout 4
    Dishonored
    Half-Life 2 (incl. Ep. 1+2)
    The Stanley Parable
    Dear Esther (Source engine version)
    Portal
    Portal 2
    Black Mesa
    Deus Ex: Human Revolution
    Left 4 Dead 2
    Mirror’s Edge
    Aliens Colonial Marines
    Duke Nukem Forever
    Quake III
    Star Trek Voyager Elite Force
    Return to Castle Wolfenstein [2001]

My latest personal recommendation would be Half-Life 2 Episode 1, which I just recently played for two hours. Something I don’t do nearly as often as I’d like to these days. Call me heavily biased, I am for sure, but that was more fun than 99% of made for VR games. I actually ended up doing that after buying and trying a bunch of highly praised made for VR titles the same evening.

In case someone never played HL2 Episode 1: right at the start you enter an alien fortress, which not only still looks great after all these years, it’s also a perfect-for-VR mix of shooting sequences and (easy) physics puzzles. Most importantly: all that in a highly intense atmosphere that almost inescapably sucks you into the game. Creating such an intense atmosphere is the hard part of making good single player shooters and it really makes all the difference in VR. Hard to top if you ask me.

Similar things could be said about Bioshock, Black Mesa (Half-Life 1 remake), the Fallout games, Skyrim or – insider tip – Aliens: Colonial Marines, which may just be a mediocre shooter on the monitor, but is actually great with vorpX.

Important side note: whenever possible play standing with Touch controllers or Vive wands!

One last thing: not a Direct VR game, but also extremely intense (and visually great) is Resident Evil 7. I chickened out before the introduction mission was over. Good luck with that one.

Since January both Fallout 4 and Portal 2 have full Direct VR support. Among other things that means that FOV is automatically set 100% correct for both games without anything needed than a click on the Direct VR scan button after entering the game.

Of all the games I tried, only 2 are actually good enough to be properly playable. Thief (2014) and BattleFront.
Most every other, the FOV can’t be set high enough no matter what. I can fake it a little bit with Portal 2 but either the fps isn’t high enough or the FOV is off even after adjusting what I can in VorpX. It’s just funky enough to not be worth it.
Fallout 4, again I can fake it enough but it’s still not quite right, there’s a couple other titles like this but most are just terrible. If you can’t have a real 120 fov horizontal, it just never looks quite right.

So basically I play using the cinema screen and I’m ok with that as long as I have the 3D option but the lack of UE4 support is killing me as so many games use that engine. Dishonored 2 isn’t playable at all with imported profile and some won’t even hook, especially if you want to use ENB series or Reshade. As such I never recommend my VR friends to get this.

I just wish Ralph was able to put more resources into VorpX, usually the lone coding wolf for software like this just never pans out enough to have polish. Too bad Valve doesn’t try to make an app like this.

    Hey cornfzd :D

    Try this:
    Start up Portal 2
Open the console and bind the command: cl_fov 120 to a key like ‘X’
    example: bind “X” “cl_fov 120”
Now, go ahead and load into your game, but do *NOT* run DirectVR.
Simply set the 3d to geometry 3d and tweak the 3D settings to your liking. I also do not recommend changing any FOV settings in the VorpX menu, just use the key you bound in the console. :)
This part is optional if you wanna use a controller, but once you have the 3D strength to your liking, scroll over to your gamepad settings, go ahead and pick a button on your controller to assign to the key for the FOV change as you will need to press it on every new level that loads (pretty sure you can set up an autoexec script for portal 2 somewhere but I haven’t looked into it yet)
You can assign it to a button on your oculus touch too if you want.

    There you go! :)

Head tracking should turn on by default in g3d mode on Portal 2
This completely eliminates flickering and for me, even fixed the sideways portal issue! :D

I no longer turn sideways when going through a portal although sometimes (very rarely) the camera just flickers when going through. :)

However, as with directvr, this does have the jumping through a portal glitch that can leave you staring at the ceiling or floor. Easy fix tho, just pause the game, look down and center the view. :P

    Enjoy

EDIT: Oh! one last thing! I also highly recommend, using vorpx to bind ALT+SPACE to a button on your controller ;) This helps when you have to jump through those pesky floor portals ^^

EDIT 2: To VorpX programmers: Would it not be easier to have VorpX just run the console commands sv_cheats 1 + cl_fov 120 + sv_cheats 0 every so often? That would eliminate any memory writing issues with the FOV as the game then completely handles that. It also eliminates objects disappearing in your peripheral as it modifies the correct FOV values. I figured out the whole controller thing and I understand that with DirectVR, but I have no AV software, its a clean install of Windows. I even disabled Defender but with directvr get tons of flickering. Using this console command instead of writing over it in memory would completely eliminate any flickering (on any resolution) :) and this applies to any source games

I tried the binding a key to -viewmodel_fov 120 and it didn’t do much for me. I thought disabling the virus software helped but not enough. What I was seeing was my portal gun flicker (pop up for a split second) mostly. Tried removing all other background apps but didn’t help.

Also I couldn’t optimize the game from “Optimize Game Settings”. I made my C: and E: drive userdata folders no longer read-only, but to no avail. I’m not using any symbolic links to my games, and Portal is installed on the E: while my Steam exe is on the C: drive.

I was excited to try Portal 2 at first but now I feel sick. Hopefully I’ll recover in a hour or so. Any advice?

    Thanks!

BTW: I’m really excited to have VorpX. This is the first game I tried that didn’t work.
