You sure you arent Yoda? Because you just got me to lift the proverbial X wing out of the swamp…or at least the wool from my eyes ;)

With the multicore/affinity thing unfortunately ruled out, I dove back into the numbers and thanks to finally getting Skyrim Performance monitor working CORRECTLY with VorpX and showing me good data, I made one hell of an interesting discovery.

    In the picture linked below…
    http://s931.photobucket.com/user/NormLenhart/media/Ram%20limit.jpg.html
…the framerates arent registering but this run was in the upper teens to lower 20s in Skyrim in Markarth. That is with EVERYTHING turned up full. Maximum possible load with the intent of making the system work as hard as possible. The 4790K @ 4.7 Ghz is the red line in the lower chart. CPU bind is not the problem. The Titan is the black line that never hits 60% usage. Clearly it isn’t the problem.

But look at the green line on top. Thats Bill gates freaking 4 gig DX9 cap in windows 10 ruining the party. ENBoost is reserving the other 500ish meg thats not being shown. It’s a memory problem. Memory appears to be the only thing stopping VorpX/Geometry from running this config far above 45FPS and likely well above 90.

All the dips are when looking at high detail areas. Things that I had believed to be a draw call problem. But look at the CPU. It’s not remotely stressed.

When I looked at this before, it was with the really big texture packs installed and hit that cap, which I expected with the Antialiasing/weather/lighting mods. But my current load is on stock size textures. When I switch back to monitor, Skyrim is barely over 2 gig of memory use. Between the ram requirements of Skyrim and VorpX though, it’s hitting Billy’s asinine limit.

So it looks like from what I can tell, Geometry mode/draw calls arent the main issue. An 8Ghz CPU and 4 titans would be meaningless. It’s purely a memory wall.

Skyrim Remastered cannot get here fast enough. Well, if nothing else, this has been a learning experience for me.

I’m redownloading Fallout 4 now for a stock reinstall. Since it seems there’s nothing more I can do for Skyrim till the remaster releases, I might as well start digging into Fallout to see what I’ll be in for when it releases.

    Hi Ralf,

Got a tech question. I’m planning for an upgrade to either X99 or Z170/Kaby Lake and 3-4000MHz ram, from my Z87/4790K@4.7/2400MHz ram system. I have been reading about core assignment and affinities lately and I am wondering about getting a 6 or 8 core and assigning VorpX to 2/4 cores of it’s own and Skyrim/Fallout/whatever to the other 2/4.

Is VorpX more CPU or GPU heavy? Since I’m topped out with a TitanXP without going the SLI route, and with Skyrim Remastered releasing next month, I’m looking where to go next for better performance out of VorpX/VR. So it’s either another TitanXP or more than 4 cores and overclocking.

    Help me Obi-Wan! You’re my only hope! ;

So I’m just wondering if this is just me or if anyone else notices this. Is it normal for games to appear generally washed out or too bright?

I don’t think it really bothered me at first cause I was just thrilled to have any games working in VR at all, but maybe now I’m just getting picky, hah.

Games like skyrim, alien isolation, or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. seem to have a lower contrast or something, especially Skyrim seems pretty washed out. Call of Pripyat seems to have this problem the least, but even adjusting gamma sliders doesn’t seem to make any difference as if it’s just disabled.
I was thinking that maybe the darkness levels in games just ‘appears’ brighter since theres no ambient light hitting the “screen” (as you are locked into a headset) or maybe because you’re so much closer to all the detail or something so everything is just more visible.

Anybody know any tricks to maybe get the darks to look more dark?

Infinite loading is a common thing for skyrim.
Iirc it’s due to incorrect memory allocation.
There are several solutions you might want to try out.
SKSE allows setting a bigger initial memory allocation.
So does ENBoost if I’m not mistaken.
And if you already have SKSE you might want to try out SafetyLoad. You can find that on the nexus, that solved my load problems.

    Edit:
Right after writing this I realized… you can’t use those with vorpx. xD
    Sorry.
You might still look into the infinite loading screen problem on google. There are lots of guides out there that address it.

If this also happens without vorpX running, it’s probably just an odd concidence. vorpX doesn’t do anything while it is not running.

If you used the vorpX Game Optimizer and want to be extra sure, you can also revert all changes to your Skyrim.ini it potentially made in the config app.

The panels are too close by about 15% when I open a inventory.. now I can use the bind to view the windowed display, but can the pnels be made a bit smaller in the game config?

I have a new oculus and have been using VorpX for 3 days so just realize this MAY be a bit scattered… BUT, as stated in Skyrim about every 4 – 6 scene loading (like walking into a inn) the game just loads and loads… it doesn’t lock up, it just never comes back from the loading.

This has only started happening since using the VorpX.

These aren’t all FPS games, but are excellent picks:

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is AWESOME in VR if you’re into mystery adventures
Elite Dangerous if you like space exploration games
The Elder Scrolls Series – primarily Skyrim.
    Fallout 4
    The Batman Arkham Series
    Metro 2033
Call of Duty Black Ops 1-3, Battlefield 3-4 and even Hardline, Any Splinter Cell or Crysis game
    Alien Isolation
    Quake I-III
    Half Life 2
    Portal
The Witcher 1 and 2 if you like extended campaign games that will suck all your time, not sure if Witcher III is manageable at acceptable graphics levels
    Bioshock: Infinite
    Borderlands
    GTA IV and V
and to tickle your fear of heights check out Mirror’s Edge

Essentially if your computer can run it, and it’s built on a major game engine like Unreal, Unity, and quite a few others – it’ll play in VorpX. The less popular it is the more tweaking you’ll have to do though because it won’t have been done already by someone else. Once you get used to the Vorpx in game menu you’ll be able to get games to run. Whether you get a true stereoscopic experience depends on how the game was coded though.

I’m sure that’s clear as mud now.. lol. But hopefully there are a couple of games on there you can check out that are well established as compatible.

Actually I made the whole thing up…

    Just kidding!

It is phenomenal how far that Titan went beyond my old Crossfire setup. 390s in tandem are damn powerful but Good God…The TXP is just monsterous.

I am sorely tempted to do another reload just to see how Skyrim would look/run stock at the 1920 rez for the hell of it but I have things pretty stable now and don’t want to tempt fate. Same reason I havent installed Enderal.

Without going to an SLI setup, I am out of ideas to get any more performance out of my rig or Skyrim in VR. More efficient/newer versions of VorpX might help some whenever it comes out but the real limit as far as I can tell is Skyrim’s DX9/Gamebyro hybrid coding. The CPU/Draw calls need more raw MHZ to overcome.

The Remaster coming late October should help a lot because of the inherently better performance of DX11 by comparison, but I am now researching Kaby Lake pretty heavily regardless just in case. Skylake will supposedly hit over 4.8 on water pretty easily and with 2 full generations of improved IPC over Haswell, that will be most likely be my next upgrade. Sabertooth Z170 (I love the Sabertooth line), 7700K on water clocked as high as water will get it, and 3000mhz DDR4.

    Hello,

iam using vorpx to play Skyrim in VR.
After setting all esential elements like FOV and headtracking sensibility it plays very well for the most part of gameplay.

I mainly have these problems left:

-The camera in dialogs feels very strange because you cant move your head

-getting hit by and blocking attacks produces still a very confusing camera sway. Is there a mod wich disables all of the camera sways?

-Using Edge Peek is sometimes difficult, because it doesent show up right in front of me but somewehere in the room (for exampel behinde me)

That shouldn’t happen at all and I honestly never heard of that before, so I’m a bit at a loss here, sorry. Head tracking is enabled per default in the Skyrim profile, you just have to adjust its sensitivity. Might make sense to reset the profile to default in the vorpX config app.

In regard to the big hands:

    1. Open [Documents]\My Games\Skyrim\Skyrim.ini with a text editor
    2. Set the fDefault1stPersonFov value to 120. If it doesn’t exist, add it under [Display]
    3. Save and run Skyrim. You may need to swap between third and first person or even open the quad (star) menu and from there the map to apply the new value for some reason. After doing this once it will stick.

I haven’t played Enderal yet, but I really liked Nehrim a few years ago made by the same guys based on Oblivion. There also was a NPC sitting around somewhere that was probably named after my Oblivion modder nickname. That alone made it worth playing. Seriously, everyone who likes Bethesda RPGs but sometimes wonders how they would be with a little bit less sandbox and more story instead should play this. Nehrim was fantastic, and I would be very surprised if anything else can be said regarding Enderal.

Usually I don’t look into official profiles for mods, but this one is large enough for that. If it requires changes to the Skyrim profile, they will be made.

GPU and CPU having to wait for each other at several occasions is the main reason for both not being fully used. The frame rate drop you see is too extreme though. Typically you should expect 50-60% for geometry 3d rendering and then another 15-20% for the direct mode thread rendering/syncing. In your 120fps mono example that should yield something around 40fps (120*0.4*0.8) worst case.

If you experience something dramatically worse with a modded Skyrim, please try an unmodded game without any .ini tweaks besides the ones the vorpX game optimizer applies. Also do not use the “Ultra” quality setting. Try “High” or even “Medium”.

DirectX (especially DX9) can only handle a certain amount of draw calls efficiently. Skyrim itself already uses many of those, stereo rendering doubles them and the “Ultra” quality setting, mods or popular quality enhancing .ini tweaks (uGridsToLoad etc.) may finally be too much in some areas of the game with much geometry to render.

Also check for any hi-res texture packs you may use and get rid of them. Those might not get disabled by disabling mods. Since vorpX requires a fair amount of additional GPU memory, hi-res textures can cause a severe performance drop on anything but the latest high end graphics cards if textures have to be swapped in and out of the GPU each frame.

I’m pretty modded up so it’s entirely possible/probable. I added a few mods since I last played it in VorpX so it could be any number of them. There have also been a couple updates to SKSE lately due to some Bethesda changes and there will be another coming for sure after Nuka World releases next week.

I think I’ll stick to Skyrim on Vive until after Nuka and SKSE get sorted then just reload and re-mod one at a time until I find the issue if it resurfaces.

I just learned my AIO/NZXT Krakens from my 390s will work on the Titan so thats the next project. They say a stable/solid 2080 to 2100mhz on water is pretty common now that a few guys have waterblocked or AIO’d them so I’m looking forward to another good boost in power. My God this card is a monster. And it’s still BIOS locked on voltage.

Maybe this helps to config Skyrim in vorpx https://www.vorpx.com/forums/topic/titan-pascal-vs-vorpx-skyrim/

I did look over that previously, but its not really relevant to what I am asking. Even with zero mods installed I have the same massive gap in fps with and without vorpx.

The mods barely make any impact at all. If I run a clean vanilla game I will get only 1-2 frames more than I do with 120 mods turned on.
