Can’t get vorpx to attach to The Surge here. Downloaded the profile for it. Vorpx hooks into other games I have, like Kingdoms of Amalur, STALKER: Call of Pripyat, or Titan Quest.

I am sure the profile is working, when I attempt to make a new profile and attach it to TheSurge.exe I get the error message that there is already a profile attached to that.

It doesn’ even attempt to attach when I’m booting the game. I have a Lenovo Explorer (WMR), which I use with a USB Headset and an XBOX 360 controller (wired).

I run Windows Mixed Reality Portal, Steam VR on top (which also starts up Revive), then I run VorpX. VorpX is set to link into Steam VR. Game is on Steam, so Steam is running in background.

I have Steam Overlay disabled, Nvidia Experience overlay disabled, Windows gaming whatever-its-called xbox bs overlay disabled, BitDefender Shield is my AV, which I disabled for 1 hr before attempting to run. Also GPU Tweak and GII Monitor, I have task killed before trying to run the game.

All I’ve got left on my task bar are Rainmeter, Bluetooth Devices, GTX 1050 Ti Display (that thing for switching what GPU games run on), Steam, Steam VR, Revive, VorpX control, SpaceDesk (disabled), and the lovely windows security icon to tell me my computer will explode since my AV is off.

When I run the game the “attaching to” dialog never even shows up. Any idea what could be stopping VorpX from attaching?

Not currently, sorry. Making official profiles overridable in a safe way, i.e. in a way that is easily restorable when the override gets deleted again, should have been part of the last larger update, but unfortunately proved to be a lot more complex than it should be. Long story short: it will come eventually, I just have to find the time.

Re the game specifically I’d suggest to play with G3D at day and switch to Z3D at night.

I have this problem in all games where async will turn itself on even thought i have it turned off. If i go in to the vorpx settings and enable it and turn it straight back off again it works fine but it will randomly turn back on again and il have to do it again.
Anyone else having this or know a way to fix it?

Iv been getting it in games where i get drops to 89 fps even, it will drop to 45 and stay there even though all the settings are turned to off.

Well FOV is extremely important for VR, and really welcomed for any game or app included 180 vids, or Vorpx. It adds a huge layer of immersion, since current 100 FOV headsets feel like looking through a scuba mask. Once you’ve tried Pimax high FOV, it’s really hard to go back.

However 5k/8k FOV have a few issues. First, they have 3 levels of FOV, low/mid/high. High has a very noticiable distortion on the sides (like a glass border reflection), mid is currently almost invisible but can be noticed, and low is distortion free. The good thing is that low FOV is still much bigger than every other HMD in the market, and it’s completely distortion free, besides it’s actually very easy to adapt to the distortion with time, it like using glasses, the first day you notice the border all the time, in a week you completely forget about it.

The thing is for your use case, you won’t take much advantage of high FOV, since Vorpx FOV is determined by the games FOV options, which normally don’t have over 90-100 FOV. The second issue is that high FOV has higher requirements, so you’ll need a great computer to make a game work on high FOV with Vorpx. The 3rd issue is that Pimax by itself requires a more powerful computer than average, since it has such high pixel panels and FOV, it needs to push a ton of pixels, so a great computer is required. Add to that the parallel projections feature of Pimax, that has a 30% performance hit since canted screens require a software adjustment, and has to be turned on in almost every game or app.

However currently Pimax has done a great job improving performance with a feature called Brainwarp that’s similar to ASW on Oculus and similar solutions on Steam and WMR, together with the option to lower refresh rate to 60hz and lower FOV, it’s actually very usable in many cases.

Also just like 3d vision, to render a game in 3D it hits half the performance of 2d in many cases, and also that for games to look great they need heavy supersampling (I run vorpx vames at 2529×1572 DSR resolution, or 2400p internal Vorpx resolution for them to look good), so add these to the mix, you get a ton of performance hits from every corner.

In my case (intel i5 4670k, 1080ti) with a Pimax 8k, at low FOV, 60hz and Brainwarp on, I can play many games in fullVR mode and real 3D (called geometry 3d or geo3d in Vorpx), but most of them are old. Games that work well in terms of performance for me are for example Bioshock 1/2, Dark Messiah, Half Life 2, Borderlands 1 GOT enhanced, Amnesia, Bulletstorm, Duke Nukem Forever, Firewatch, Metro 2033 Redux, Fallout New Vegas, The Stanley Parable to name a few. Still several games, even old, have mid-low performance like Dishonored, TESO or Shadow Warrior 1. Still those that work are absolutely incredible and really feel like you’re inside the game.

However Vorpx has a home theater mode, that it basically creates a floating virtual screen, and in that case performance is way less important. In full VR mode, low fps will hit your brain hard, since any slow down can make you sick, but in virtual theater mode or floating screen mode, you can play at lower fps just fine, like it was a real monitor or projector. Another thing to have into account is that if you don’t have good VR legs (have your brain trained to detach virtual movement from real movement), you can get really sick with Vorpx when your brain tries to understand why it’s moving (virtual reality) but you’re actually not moving in the real world. It get’s time to get used to it, and it’s even harder with Vorpx since real games move you at very high speeds that your brain takes time to get used to.

So for example, games like Witcher 3 or Batman Arkham Knight are perfectly playable in Vorpx theater mode at 30-40 fps in full real 3D, both reasonably demanding games, however games like TESO can melt your brain in FullVR since they have a hard time hitting 60 fps in real 3d, so head movement and game movement aren’t completely in sync.

Also since Pimax has such a huge FOV, the pixels need to fill a much higher screen size, so even having two 2k screens (5k) or two 4k screens (8k) doesn’t mean it looks a lot better than normal HMDs, and they are comparable to Index in the case of 5k, and close to Reverb in the case of 8K afaik in terms of image quality/SDE.

That’s why I said that for your use case, probably Rift S, Reverb or Odyssey Plus are the best devices. Only VR games really take advantage of the huge FOV of Pimax, but you’re not interested in VR gaming that much as far as I can see.

So for me, I’d put it like this:
    1) Rift S for a really good rounded device both for VR and 3d/vorpx/video at a good price, but Facebook walled garden market.
    2) Vive Pro for a slightly better, more expensive experience compared to Rift S.
    3) Reverb for a extremely good 3d/Vorpx/video experience, average VR experience at a high price, but hardware issues.
    4) Pimax for the ultimate VR experience, but very high price, very high requirements, it’s not sold with either controllers and tracking LHs, so you need to get them from elsewhere.
    5) Samsung Galaxy Plus: Best entry device that can be found for 300-400 for the full VR kit, very similar image quality to Rift S ( http://360rumors.com/samsung-odyssey-plus-vs-oculus-rift-s-299-399-budget-high-resolution-vr-headsets/ ), average VR experience. The good thing is that it has high availability, and Samsung has a great return policy, so if you don’t like it, they’ll take it back, no question asked in almost all cases.
    6) Index: The best case overall VR experience without any compromises, but high price, low availabilty.

    Topic: Dying light!!

Today i managed to get dying light working beautifully. It is still in z buffer but the quality is far superior to any other profile i have tested. I would say it is as good as the built in vr the game has but with a lot of the customization vorp x offers.

It is a must try for anyone who enjoys this game. Im sure someone out there could make this even better, my knowledge is very limited but here is a guide to what i know so far.

Step 1: Call your boss, you are going to need at least a week off for this!

Step 2: Download the profile off the cloud, the description says Must try!

Step 3: Make sure your screen resolution is 1920 x 1080 or less before starting the game, il explain further later on.

    Step 4: Start the game.

Field of view can be altered in a file located in… Documents\DyingLight\out\settings
    The file name is video.scr
Open it with notepad and edit the value of ExtraGameFov(60.00) to suit your liking. 60 is what i have it set on for full vr or about 50 for cinema mode (which looks outstanding!)

The biggest problem iv found so far is that if you go over 1920 x 1080 there is no 3d effect at all. It could be that is my monitors native resolution. I don’t have one with a higher res to test it out.

Something that may or may not work is altering the super sampling in steam vr. Once vorp x hooks to the exe it becomes available in the applications list in steam vr settings where you can alter the SS levels. I can’t say for sure if it helps but it seems to a little for me. Maybe someone can fix the resolution problem.

    Enjoy.

Strange. It’s been a while (year +) since I’ve played csgo, but I don’t recall any problem with geometry at all. Only struggle I remember is having to deal with the low fov.

You are suggesting a game update has broken it since? It does get updated often. Maybe I’ll have a look.

Does vorpX Z3D even work with anything source anymore? Seems like HL2 and other based mods I’ve used lately don’t produce.

I tried the free trial yesterday and G3D was not working – the other Z modes were.

After messing around with it for a while, I decided it was most likely the frequent updates that did it.

For anyone who didn’t get to try it: I found the game to be quite laggy sometimes even without Vorpx, but if you can ignore the shop the environments are nice and should be better later in the year with NPCs.

Well Three kingdoms does play in stereo 3d on a monitor with nvidia stereo (as long as you don’t update to the newer drivers). The 3d has lots of issues but in compatibility mode its pretty clean but no really good 3d pop/ convergence.

And yes I think it is dx11. I may try some other profiles but not hopeful and the nvidia stereo is keeping me 3d satisfied for now.

There are some workarounds to get Tridef VR working, I think, even though the company has gone belly up and the software has self destructed with no on line licence renewal (even though we paid for it). Again a lot of trouble for something that used to work fine.

Would be nice if Vorpx picked up the slack but I guess Ralph has a lot of other things on his plate.

Yeah, HP need to clean up their act, it’s getting ridiculous. Luckily, i’m living in Germany and have good return policies. And who knows when my Reverb will arive, could be July or even August, quality control will hopefully get better until then.

That said, the majority of the reviews are positive and issue-free, so i’m not that worried.

Sebastian from WMR has the flicker. I think the reviewers really didn’t put the cable through a proper usage stress test, my experience looking this has been the opposite as I see more and more Reverbs being returned. I will wait for the consumer version, that one isn’t being released till later for purchase and hopefully is a batch of units with out issues.

Hey guys. I was messing with TT isle of man today and managed to get it to run perfectly in G3d. Everything looks great and the fov adjuster even works!
The profile also works well in z buffer mode if you need better fps but sadly the fov slider isn’t available there. Profile is up on the cloud if anyone is interested.

You’re right. I just looked up Vulcan compatibility and it turns out that even nVidia 600 series support the API.

Luckily CP2077 will be so crazy popular that in case it doesn’t work out of the box, Ralf will get flooded with requests and will have the justification to invest the time. :)

I’m not opposed to paying for big upgrades either, as long as they’re optional and don’t occur too often (every 3 years is a good compromise IMO).

It’s possible Empire and Napoleon are dx9, I can’t remember. If the New games are dx11 (?) that could explain why they wouldn’t hook at all.

If you haven’t already, it might be worth trying the “Unity 5 Base Profile” which I believe hooks dx11. Pretty sure I used a unity variant for Napoleon.

After that you could try profiles from other common engines to try your luck. Unreal 4, Cryengine 4, maybe even Assassins Creed Unity and Life is Strange: Before the Storm (these have surprised me a few times). Alien Isolation is another I would try, as it is listed as being loosely based off the same Warscape engine.

I probably tried some 15+ profiles before I got Napoleon working. You don’t always get lucky, but I’ve been surprised how often you can get at least Z3D to work.

Any “new” or updated settings people have found ? I’m running an Oculus Rift, and while VR is pretty good, it still has a long way to go to get it great. I’ve tried the AC Unity profile and Yohaskan’s profiles.

I think part of the issue is, I don’t know enough about graphics/VR to even search for answers, because I can’t explain/know what the issue is. The game just feels off.

If anyone has some targeted questions, or a newer (most info I’ve found is from last summer) settings profile, I’d appreciate any help I can get!

I was under the impression that Total War will support 3D VR back then by these two videos

It ‘s still amazing to watch them again eventhough , sadly it not gonna happen

To get an ideal how Tridef3D immage looks like for Warhammer 1, please see this video in VR

I really hope Vorpx could create true 3D like this for Warhammer in near future
