It’s is probably slower in almost any game with true geometric 3d. Vorpx requires even better specs since it isn’t optimized as well as native VR apps. But you could run in some of the simpler 3d modes and get better frame rates. And then there are old games like Portal, Mirror’s Edge or Half-Life 2, that may run well even on your system.
I always laugh when people say there are no games for VR I am so glad Vorpx exist. It’s amazing exploring your favorite games in Virtual Reality there’s nothing like it.I really can’t wait for the updates to the program and experience some new AAA games in VR.It’s funny the first game I beat in VR was Mirror’s Edge no motion sickness at all and it was fantastic even better was playing F.E.A.R. it’s my favorite FPS of all time so playing that in VR was a dream come true.
These aren’t all FPS games, but are excellent picks:
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is AWESOME in VR if you’re into mystery adventures
Elite Dangerous if you like space exploration games
The Elder Scrolls Series – primarily Skyrim.
Fallout 4
The Batman Arkham Series
Metro 2033
Call of Duty Black Ops 1-3, Battlefield 3-4 and even Hardline, Any Splinter Cell or Crysis game
Alien Isolation
Quake I-III
Half Life 2
Portal
The Witcher 1 and 2 if you like extended campaign games that will suck all your time, not sure if Witcher III is manageable at acceptable graphics levels
Bioshock: Infinite
Borderlands
GTA IV and V
and to tickle your fear of heights check out Mirror’s Edge
Essentially if your computer can run it, and it’s built on a major game engine like Unreal, Unity, and quite a few others – it’ll play in VorpX. The less popular it is the more tweaking you’ll have to do though because it won’t have been done already by someone else. Once you get used to the Vorpx in game menu you’ll be able to get games to run. Whether you get a true stereoscopic experience depends on how the game was coded though.
I’m sure that’s clear as mud now.. lol. But hopefully there are a couple of games on there you can check out that are well established as compatible.
VorpX Supported Games
Good to hear, I hope it goes well. I haven’t tried Mirror’s Edge Catalyst yet but I’m definitely looking forward to it.
The vanishing of ethan carter simply crash before the menu appear. Chivalry only show around 50 percent of the screen. Skyrim, need for speed rival have inverted Head tracking camera and the invert option does not work. Mirror’s edge have stretching edge when i rotate my head. Is there a way to manage width and height of the screen notch by notch ?
Hi,I been playing Mirror’s Edge 2008 and every time I take damage a white box on the upperleft corner of the screen will appear it will eventually go away but I’m wondering is there a fix? I turned off Dynamic shadows I’m using Geometry it only appears in that mode is there way to fix it without turning off Geometry?
My list of favourites:
Dishonored
Outlast
Mirror’s Edge
Aliens: Colonial Marines
Shadow Warrior
The Darkness 2
Dear Esther *
Life is Strange *
Dead Space 3 *
Max Payne 3 *
* Unlock prosiontal tracking form advanced options
These are my favourite perfomance wise. I would add also:
Alan Wake, who doesn’t suppuort geometry 3d or positional tracking but runs so well with Z-Buffer that you won’t miss the 2.
All these games works great with 970 and Vive at 1920×1400 with medium detail setting or so.
I’ve been trying, with limited knowledge, to see if I could get Mirror’s Edge Catalyst to work in vorpX. Figuring that it was first person and Frostbite based I went with the Battlefield 4 profile but it just crashes on launch. Are there any more comprehensive profile authoring documentation/tools available. I’ve read the blog post titled “Power to the People!”.. I’m guessing that is still in the pipeline?
I’ll post here if I make any progress. :D
Hi there, i use the resolution of 1920×1080 instead of 1920×1440 with games having some unsolvable FOV problems (in my case, Call of Duty Ghosts is an example, but also The Crew and other games without 3d rendering). Doing so the upper and lower portions of the screen are occupied by a dinamic effect called “ambience”. This effect can be disabled with the Virtual Cinema mode but not with the regular Vorpx visualization. I think that black screen, in this case, is much better thatn any effect as it blends with the hud itself and the loss of vertical FOV is minimal and can barely noticed using a black background (i am pretty sure of this because of some games like Mirror’s Edge). On the other hand, ambience is like a constant reminder of the adaptation.
I wonder if there’s an advanced setup i can use for that, or if Ralph can consider this for the next Vorpx version. Thanks for any reply.
@ Karlor : Not sure if I understand the question. What do you mean by ‘spectator other screen display thing’? If that means the mirror window, you should be able to use it with just a little performance impact. Normally there should be no need to adjust settings to use it.
@ Nikolay : In general the raw FPS are about 10-20% lower than before due to the far more complicated rendering pipeline that was necessary for the Direct Mode. but that’s countered by the async timewarp, which makes things still look smoother. Can’t really imagine Mirror’s Edge at 120fps in G3D on your 960. With a GTX970 it always ran around 60 before in the start area. Crysis 3 didn’t have G3D before, 15-20 still sounds quite low even for a GTX960 in Crysis 3. With a GTX970 the game runs at about 35-40fps in the start area (ship in rain) when using Geometry 3D. Low settings IIRC. From testing various GPUs I would say a GTX970 is a reasonable recommendation, it’s also what Oculus suggests for the Rift in general.
You could also take a look at the Reddit thread linked below for advanced tweaking, a similar advanced tweaking sticky will follow here shortly:

@ Cy : That sounds odd, especially since it happens in games that run perfectly fine at 75fps. Anything special about your setup (SLI, Optimus or uncommon in any other way)? Can you make a video of this? A frame by frame analysis might be helpful to at least understand what’s happening. I could provide you with an FTP account to upload it.
It’s strange… Everyone says about performance improvements since update, while I have severe performance impact. I have GTX960, 8GB DRAM. For example, Crysis 3 runs up to 100 fps on High settings without VorpX, and I had just about 20-30% performance impact while using VorpX 0.8.0.1 with Oculus Runtime 0.6.0.1 (Extended Mode). But after update the game runs just on ~15-20 FPS, and even lowering graphics settings to lowest doesn’t help at all! It seems that main problem is Geometry 3D mode: after I’ve switched it off to Z-buffer, performance got up to 30FPS on high settings and started to react to changing graphic settings adequately. What’s worse, same issue remains even with pretty old games with Geometry-3D support, like Mirror’s Edge: prior to 0.9.0 update the game used to run extremely fast: 120 FPS and higher with Geometry-3D activated, but now it runs 20-30 FPS only. Async Rendering set on “half” helps though, but it still doesn’t give even 75 FPS except disabling Geometry-3D which bumps it to 150+ FPS. I’ve tried Oculus Runtime 0.6.0, 0.7.0 and 0.8.0.0, updated NVidia driver to 358.78, tried to recover it back to official stable 358.50 – and I can confidently say that’s not the cause.
Both Mirror’s Edge and Outlast can be optimized with the Game Settings Optimizer in the vorpX config app (2. in the above answer). If that fails or isn’t available for a game, the first thing you schould try is 3. from the list above. The vorpX ingame menu can be displayed in every game when it runs with vorpX.
Here’s the FOV part of the Essential Game Hints for your convenience again:
You can get most games look almost perfect in this regard. And even for those that do not offer FOV control, neither directly, nor through vorpX, there are functions in vorpX to make them playable, although not in a perfect way.
From best to worst here is what you can do:
1. Set the game FOV directly in the game if it provides to dial in an FOV of 120°,
2. Set the game FOV directly with the vorpX Game Optimizer (vorpX config app) for games that support it.
3. Set the game FOV to 120 manually through an ini tweak or external tool (avaliable for many games, google FOV + game name).
4. Use the 3D FOV Enhancement in the vorpX ingame menu (availabe in Geometry 3D games).
5. Use one of the letterbox aspect ratio modes in the vorpX ingame menu and/or ImageZoom
6. Play the game in Virtual Cinema Mode
7. Use the 2D FOV-Enhancement in the vopX ingame menu (be aware that this distorts the image)
It kind of work with Mirror’s Edge thanks to the in-game menu.
But the said menu doesn’t work or appear in Outlast or Half-Life 2 so it’s unplayable.
Also again, we tried vorpx on two computer and two screens, and the zoomed-in problems were exactly the same, so if we could we had to use Geometry 3D the same way: so why isn’t vorpx set to do that directly?
I’ve tried skyrim, black ops and mirror’s edge. I’ve restarted my pc multiple times, but it still doesn’t work. And yes, I mean it looks like the normal monitor.
I can launch Far Cry 4 and The Escapits. But Mirror’s Edge and Batman and others games.
