Due to the far more complex rendering pipeline direct mode did cost about 15%-20% of raw performance when it was introduced last year. This was however compemsated fairly well by async timewarp, which also reduces latency. So all in all this was a win in most cases despite the lower raw performance.

With the new driver side async timewarp in 1.3 that supersedes the prior custom solution things feel even snappier. In the mid term at least a part of the lost performance *may* (emphasis on may) be gained back. That won’t make it into the first 1.3 update though.

    Hi Ralf,

It’s been a while since I tried VorpX Skyrim with an ENB, and I forgot which specific ENB setting I have to turn off to restore 3D. Do you remember by chance?

Yes, the original DX9 version is usually better suited for vorpX unless you use huge amounts of mods/texture packs that exceed the 32bit memory limit of the DX9 Skyrim.

Usually the original Skyrim performs better, even more important is that it allows actual multisampling antialising instead of the very blurry post process AA of the Special Edition, which just doesn’t work really well in VR.

I know previously it was recommended to get legendary edition over special edition,
is this still the case with the new vorpx version?

Can anyone point to a guide for starting out with VorpX in Windows Mixed Reality? I just spent an hour or so with my Lenovo Explorer in Skyrim SE, but I get the feeling there’s still so much more I can do to get it running. For a start…on the configuration menu, what should I use as my device selection, “SteamVR” or “Generic VR Headset”?

    SteamVR mode
Make sure to run the directVR scan and center view with the other button on the in-game menu first page.
You can get to the in-game menu by hitting Delete
set to geometry mode if you can maintain game FPS of at least 45fps so directVR mode can run at 90fps. You can see keybinds in the vorpX configuration application in the “In-game key bindings” section but pressing Alt f in game will display vorpx FPS info.
If you can not maintain 45FPS game fps so directVR fps is 90 + or – 1 or 2 fluxuating or solid so moving looks smooth then you need to lower your settings/turn off shadows(Not sure how in Special Edition). Or just lower resolution(5:4 resolutions work best for Skyrim LE…not sure about SE).
Skyrim LE or Vanilla is recommended for vorpX last I heard.Skyrim SE is not recommended. Not sure if that has changed.
z-normal or z-adaptive are similar and honestly I can not tell the difference between the two. They are an alternative if your pc can not handle geometry mode. I prefer geometry though because it looks more 3D to me. More real. I got it working barely and I got a gtx970 so you can use that for reference. Your experience may differ drastically because I use Skyrim LE and not SE.
    Any more questions just ask.

If I’m giving bad or outdated info here someone please correct me.

You may tray a Skyrim profile for G3D or any profile which supports “The Devision”, You also could try a profile which works with Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Far Cry 3, Just Dance Nowany or any other 3D ubisoft game past 2014 (not guaranteed). The all use the same engine as far i was able to discover.

“Skyrim ModOrganizer integration removed. Note that MO itself still writes settings changes to the currently active profile”

Why has this improvement been removed?…I just feel this phrase like a kick with this update. I had planned to make quite a lot of use of mod organizer very soon, now that I finally had integration with Vorpx

TESO impossible, integration MOd Organizer retired…clearly these news are not good for me.

Congratulations to the beneficiaries of this update, unfortunately I am not one of them at all.

I am blown away. Not only does the Samsung Odyssey work with Skyrim on Vorpx, but it works better than my Rift does. WAY better! Since the pixel count is almost 2x as high I can turn down the resolution and get a way better solid FPS. Not only that but when I turned the res down it looked better than a higher res on my Rift and the FPS was crap on the Rift with a higher res due to my only having a GTX970. The FPS was SOLID on the Odyssey. I think it only skipped/stuttered like 2x in about 1 to 2hours. Now Vorpx just needs the WinMR controllers thumbstick support and the in-game visualization of the controllers and it will be great. Also the ability to customize its controls. VR in general needs the ability to customize controls btw. Would def prefer an entire new setting for Win MR as opposed to Steam VR for both Vive and Windows MR. Great though. I’m very happy so far. :D Thanks Ralf.

Getting much better utilization and frames now with ‘OneTweak’ mod from Nexus.

    https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/40706/?tab=description

Also added to Skyrim.ini to fix physics issues at 90fps when Vsync is off:

    [Havok]
    fMaxTime=0.011

Also game has numerous mods and 2K textures and is mostly @90fps with RX 480 8GB. I’m sure there will be places it doesn’t like, but I am yet to find them.
    Now for tweaking!

Looks like the next release has a 5-7% boost in most games. Upgrading my graphics card REALLY helped on stuff like GTA V and Skyrim, amazing the framerates I used to put up with.

If that is still the case with FluidSync off, the Oculus runtime decides to throttle down on its own, not much vorpX can do about that. The runtime makes its decision based on GPU load, so you can try to reduce that (e.g. by switching to Z3D, reducing graphics detail etc.).

As said above, rendering everything twice for Geometry 3D and sending the image to the headset costs a lot of performance. To reach 90fps in Skyrim with G3D at least in some parts of the game you need a very fast PC.

Set the “FluidSync” option on the “Display Settings” page of the vorpX ingame menu to “Off” or “Auto”. That will allow games to run at the full headset refresh rate (90 in your case).

Caveat: that makes most sense for games that can run safely at 90fps all the time, which is not the case for Skyrim, even with a GTX1080Ti. Rendering in 3D and to your headset costs a lot of performance.

BTW: The “thousands of frames per second” you see in Skyrim’s menu on your monitor don’t have any meaning since almost nothing is rendered there.

As title. I’ve turned off V-Sync in the .ini files and get thousands of frames per second and my GPU goes “SCREEEEEEEEE!” with coil whine when on monitor. But can only get 45 fps with Vorpx and cannot turn of asw?

Ahhh baloney! It does NOT work out of the box. It’s not even VR 3D, its 2D in cinema mode! My normal FONV works fine both standalone and through ModOrganizer. I’m using 17.3.2. I’ve tried every other profile in the cloud, and those don’t work either (not that there is a lot of them). As the original poster mentioned, the profiles are all binary files, so there is no “tweaking”, you make a change in the game, save it, exit, export it. The help is practicaly non-existant as far as documentation and what each setting might possibly do. The Skyrim game works (ish… lots of black flickering), Deus Ex HR works sort of, can’t adjust the vertical centering, just the horizontal. Dishonored has an inverted picture flickering in the upper left corner of the left eye (taking up 1/4 of the viewing area). Still haven’t been able to even launch Fallout 3 GOTY! It just sits in the task manager after vorpx “attaches” itself to it. I have a HTC Vive with Fallout 4 VR, and it works fine (Alienware system 16 gigs of ram with Radeon RX 580 and latest drivers). In other words, it’s not the system, it’s the software. I expected to have to tweak some settings, but they are not even close for FONV! The DirectVR mode doesn’t work either, in fact it makes things worse (in just about every game). So far I’m not impressed in the slightest.

About ENB Boost working I was replying to the post by lipplog. Just wanted to make it more clear that the way to use ENB Boos with VorpX is to use the Injector version of ENB. He says that it can, but doesn’t say how, so I wanted to clarify.

About the Windows update, I hope I’ll be able to test it this weekend with MO2.
In general it is expected Oldrim to keep crashing as before. Here is a discussion I had about this ( I was expecting the crashes to be fixed). https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/757orf/minor_update_to_windows_10_performance_guide_for/do48ts0/

If Oldrim is indeed not crashing for you because of the memory usage it would be very cool if we could find out why.
