Rendering performance however is roughly cut in half in Geometry 3D, since everything has to be rendered twice, but not so in Z-Buffer 3D, which works almost as fast as mono rendering.

This is from a another thread, and I wish the performance hit would be so low for me. ;) This happens basicly in every game but Im using F.e.a.r 2 as an example.

Opening scene with normal monitor = 250-400fps
VorpX running + Rift, no “3D” modes enabled = 60-100fps
    Vorpx running + Rift, 3D geometry mode = 10-40fps

Needless to say, its unplayable and something is wrong since even running the vorpx drops the fps so much. Im using 290x and normal rift games run much better, some vorpx games don’t give that big of a performance hit but still too much (mirrors edge, skyrim etc)

Hmm, did you do anything special to get Space Engineers to work with VorpX?
For me, when I start Space Engineers via steam with VorpX running (and watching) – the game starts on the Rift, but as a normal monitor.
Its -one- image and there is no VorpX menu.

I tried making a shortcut for SpaceEngineers.exe (both 64 and 32 bit) via VorpX but executing that as administrator – same effect as starting via steam.

Other games, such as Skyrim, work just fine with VorpX and it “hooks” right into it.
My Space Engineers is vanilla shader wise; I only have some workshop models in the game.

    My Issue in short:
    – game starts on the oculus, but VorpX doesn’t hook/inject into it (no VorpX Menu)

I dunno man. Skyrim in geometry 3d looks pretty eye popping awesome to me! In the opening scene when you first encounter the dragon and it is attacking you, when it snaps its teeth at you it definitely comes at my face seemingly. That and the depth far is still good. I use FOV 120 and have adjuster the IPD to match my eyes. Maybe that is also a setting you should try out. Your eyes might be closer together or further apart from the “average” that oculus defaults to. Try playing around with that setting a little and with FOV it might help greatly. :)

    Hi there,
I just tried VorpX with both Skyrim and Left 4 Dead 2, after a lot of fiddling I was able to get it running somewhat smoothly, but what really bugs me the 3D effect I get.
At default settings everything feels very flat, like as watching a movie on a flat screen, and only objects that are really close seem to have 3 dimensons. If I crank up the 3D Strengh slider all the way up I now get a nice 3D effect from farther objects but everything seems zoomed out/small, feels like I am inside a dollhouse or something. I
I tried raising the FOV both through console and the FOV Enchancement slider, but everything still looks small.
Is this how things are supposed to be? You just strike a balance between 3D Strength and FOV that is suitable to your tastes or is there an optimal setting to correct this where you can have both a nice 3D effect from distance and a good scaling/FOV?
By the way, I tried both Geometry and the Z modes in Skyrim, they both seem to behave like this…

    Thanks!

If the Rift as secondary, vorpX to “Show on DK2” method does not work for you (normally it should for Skyrim and most other games), you have to resort to DK2 as primary, vorpX to “Use system settings”.

That is pretty inconvenient for sure, but not impossible. You can either try looking through the Rift’s lenses with one eye, and use the desktop this way, or rearrange your whole desktop including moving the taskbar back to your monitor as a more permanent solution.

Direct to HMD is not supported currently. It may work with some games (including Skyrim), but Direct to HMD directly conflicts with what vorpX does, so this is not officially supported at all currently.

The two “official” setup options are described in the DK2 Setup Guide in the documentation.

Please also check your Skyrim folder for a d3d9.dll and remove it if you find one. In case you use many mods, try a fresh install without any mods.

I try to get skirim to work. This is what I have tryed so for:

    Rift as primery:
Not possible to start the Game because the Icon and the splashscreen to start the game is on the Rift disply. The monitor is empty.

Rift as secondary. Rift set to Extended. VorpX to ‘use system settings’:
Game starts with Vorpx enabeld but on Monitor not on the Rift

Rift as secondary. Rift set to Direct. VorpX to ‘use system settings’:
Game starts without VorpX in a small window on monitor.

Rift as secondary. Rift set to Direct. VorpX to ‘show on all monitors’:
Game starts without VorpX in a small window on monitor.

Rift as secondary. Rift set to Extended. VorpX to ‘show on all monitors’:
Skyrim Error message. Failed to set up renderer. Resolution not supported.

Rift as secondary. Rift set to Extended. VorpX to ‘show on DK2’:
    Skyrim refuses to start.

    And recommendations?

A few games already should work in Direct HMD mode, Skyrim for example. This may be system dependent though, so consider this *very* experimental.

There is a another way though:

    1. Set the Rfift to Extend Desktop
    2. Set the Rift as secondary display in Windows
    3. Set vorpX to “Show only on Rift DK2”

Just be aware that this does not work with everything. For some games you will have to revert to the DK2 as primary display.

The above setup is explained in greater detail in the DK2 setup guide in the vorpX documentation.

So I finally figured out how to enabled the in-game VorpX menu using Del – this was not well-documented. I switched over to Z-Buffer in Skyrim for the better performance; however, when I did, I’m no longer able to zoom out the UI using Alt + Mouse-Wheel. Is there a way to re-enable this using Z-Buffer?

Also, what’s the difference between the two Z-Buffer modes?

    Thanks.

Actually stereo3d adds very little to the vram usage. The data needed for the 2 images is not double. The rendering is doubled so the speed and efficiency of the GPU is more important. Most tests see around 5% increase in vram usage when running in stereo3d. Though these tests are for shutter glasses and NVidia 3dvision they are very comparable. As far as stereo rendering they are doing the same thing. So in short unless vorpx is very different from other stereo drivers you would definitely see better performance with the 780ti. As for Skyrim if you are thinking more vram more mods you should look up what happened to people who bought Titans for all the vram. Skyrim seemed to crash when vram usage got up to past 3gb whether you had more than 3gb or not. Unless somebody fixed that 6gb is wasted on that game. Titan Z is a dual GPU card but only one of the GPUs will work in vorpx, Right now the best card for VR is a 780 Ti.

Hi, I’ve tried googling this issue and I haven’t found much about VorpX itself but have found variable answers for 3dVision.

If I was trying to decide between a GTX 780ti at 3gb VRAM or a 780 6gb VRAM for the sole and specific purpose of running games through VorpX, which would lead to higher frame rates and no studdering (outside of SDK issues) with a game like Skyrim at max settings in Geometry 3d mode? I understand it’s a taxing game and that is why I’m asking about VorpX. Does VorpX need the 6gb VRAM due to rendering the image twice? Or is the more horsepower of the 780 ti more important? How much extra VRAM does VorpX typically use? 2x as much? Or is the extra processing mainly affect the processor on the card?

I know that’s a lot to ask, but for those of use who are looking to upgrade our graphics card for smoother high quality geometry 3d in future releases of VorpX supported games it would be beneficial to know what’s most important. Clock speed or VRAM.

Note : I’m aware the next series of Nvidia cards are coming out soon but that’s when I’ll be buying one of these two cards. They will most likely drop in price or can find them used. If money wasn’t an issue I’d get a Titan Z lol. Thanks for all help. :)

    Found a workaround for it.

Alt-tab does get the extra mouse cursors off the screen. Sometimes it takes a few tries, but it does work eventually. Just make sure you have a folder open to alt-tab to as just using alt-tab to exit to the desktop doesn’t work. You’ve got to go to an open folder or other window and then back to the game. I recommend a folder because it’s won’t tie up your resources with an active process and drag the game performance down.

That doesn’t solve the minimizing issue though.

I’ve figured out what is happening with that though. The problem is that the Windows mouse cursor doesn’t interfere with the game as long as it’s on the same screen that Skyrim is being displayed on, but it’s not restricted to the game screen for some reason. It’s moving over to the extended desktop screen and that’s when it minimizes the game screen. As long as it stays on the Rift screen with the game it’s fine.

The workaround is simple, just set the Rift up so it’s the only display. Keep the Oculus Config in extended mode, then use the Windows Display screen and simply set it so that the Rift’s screen is the only active display. This has completely solved the minimizing issue I’ve been having.

You might want to remove the lenses for a moment so you can move some of the icons to the center of the screen to make launching the game easier, but once you get everything set up it’s not so bad.

I’ve got the most common icons I use for VR and a folder full of shortcut for VR games and programs in the center of the screen when my Rift is the only display. It’s a little awkward, but not too bad as long as you remember you can drag open folders and windows about by holding down left click on the top portion of them to get a better look at them without head tracking. It also helps to close one eye so you can see what you’re doing a little better.

It’s well worth the effort it takes to get Skyrim working right, but I’m still hoping this will be fixed in future updates.

Having the exact same issue. Skyrim has 3 cursors on screen, my Windows cursor looking like an hour glass, the VorpX cursor, and when I’m in menus the Skyrim cursor. My game is constantly being minimized when trying to play due to this.

Skyrim looks greats, my SLI’d GTX 550 tx’s may be a little underpowered for Ultra-geometry mode (and SLI could be increasing my latency, not sure), but mostly I’m having trouble bringing myself to play it a 3rd time :).

If oblivion is as good, I haven’t played it and would buy it in a heartbeat, now.

    Any reports/experiences would be appreciated.

    Hey.
    1. Is the a fix for the doubled UI in Skyrim? I know that they have a fix for it in Vireio, which actually works great.

    2. Is there a way to adjust the sensitivity of the positional tracking? It doesn’t seem to respond that well.

    3. How do I setup the controller in vorpx? I started the game turned off ingame support, turned on my controller and tried fiddling with vorpx, but nothing seemed to work.

yeah Skyrim is working great! I have about 60 mods now installed and it even looks beatiful. My GTX 680 and 8 core AMD CPU handling Skyrim very well on High settings through DK2. I try not to move the head too much as there is still some jittering going on even though not too much. Smooth like a baby’s butt experience in dungeons and world maps, but if I get into city turning head or looking up or down is a bit jittery.

I don’t have to run DK2 as primary display. I usually change resolution of my monitor to 1024×1028, and set it to 75Hz and everything is golden. IPD was the only problem in my case. That’s why things looked doubled. Thanks for VorpX. Without it I’d be still poking around short Demos, some are nice but playing a full game like Skyrim is a whole lot better experience. I almost pooped my pants last night while I was going to the dungeon for quest and all of a sudden this black wolf jumps me from behind the tree. What the heck! LOL.

If any improvements possible I wish VorpX to have “profiles” that can be used in specific games. Like pressing DEL there are bunch of settings to play with while setting VorpX for your best experience. So separate profiles that you can assign to specific game would be great after you play with settings through DEL inside the game and find optimal ones for your eyes and that game, so that VorpX could remember them, or some pre-coded profiles that would change to several optimal settings templates to try etc.

My main gripe probably is that headtracking gives a bit weird impression, thats probably because Skyrim doesn’t really have OR support and VorpX doing its best. I tried to play with image zoom, and different FOV until found the configuration that I could live with.

Anyways, keep up the good work Ralp! You have a birght future ahead of you if you can make VorpX support as many best games as possible, especially these AAA titles like Skyrim. IMHO OR will be very popular in gaming community and being able to play old games with OR on would be an awesome change of experience.
