I had a similar one-time problem that was opposite. The screen was black unless I used edge peak. So it was black, but when I used edge peak it re-appeared. Luckily it was just an odd one time problem that went away when I restarted VorpX.

I have noticed some strange y-axis HT sensitivity in Skyrim before. I found it had to do with the FOV. Sometimes the y-axis sensitivity would go severely down compared with the x-axis and feel odd/warped when I looked up/down. This problem would correct itself if I opened the in game map and closed it (which resets the FOV, which I changed to 120 deg in the skyrim ini).
I found using the VorpX set fov (ie the skyrim console FOV=120) would not solve the problem and only opening and closing the map worked for me.
I use mouse for HT and not x-box controller.

geometry 3D is true stereo with 2 fully rendered images (one for each eye). This is very intensive and will cut your frame-rate in half.

VorpX can also run with No 3D separation at all (no stereo) and I actually find that playable too even though it does not feel real and may make some people motion sick. This is not too intensive and you should get about 75-95% of your normal game frame-rate.

VorpX also has a fake Z3D that makes 2 eye views from a single image. This gives the illusion of a stereo 3D effect but is not true 3D. I feel it kind of has a pop-up book look to it where things look flat but are separated in each eye view. This is not too intensive and should run almost as good as No separation.

With the async time warp I find most games feel comfortable above 40 fps. So you want to make sure you can get 80-100 fps running a game normally on your monitor in order to play well in geometry 3D. If you only get 60+ fps normally you should use Z3D. If you get less than 60 fps normally it may be hard to play in VR.

I find you need a powerful graphics card (GTX 970 or better) AND you should also have a powerful CPU. I have an AMD athlon 860 x4 and it is really not good enough. I wish I went with Intel.

You can definitely get above 30fps in many games if you have the right rig.

I have found that this performance and stuttering problem seems to persist even at high frame-rates.

For example when I turn fluidsync off I can get to 60-75 fps in interiors with z3D.

But even at 60 fps I get this jitter/skip once every second or two so it does not seem to be a frame-rate issue but it does feel very uncomfortable. I did not get this in version 1.6.1.2. It feels like I am going crazy but I am sure there is a problem that was not here before. I am not sure if it is VorpX or new oculus home or even new Nvidia drivers

I have tried resetting VorpX todefaults and 1280×1024 resolution and nothing seems to help.

I would like to try and go back to VorpX1.6.1.2 if possible because I know this worked well for me. I will send support request. I have a DK2 so I am fine staying with an older version and not getting updates.

Upon further trying with default settings I am still seeing problems and I noticed they reminded me of the performance problems I had with version 1.6.1.1.
I barely remember these since VorpX was quickly updated to 1.6.1.2 and everything was fine.
However, I see that 1.6.1.2 had this
“This is a maintenance release that mainly addresses a few DK2 related issues”

I use a DK2. Is it possible that the DK2 issues fixed have crept back into 1.6.2.0?
It just seems that optimizing for a 90Hz CV1 may not work as well for 75Hz Dk2

If possible can I roll back to 1.6.1.2? Please let me know as I would like to try that build again.

I would never disable async for Skyrim.
However, I will try this default reset tomorrow and hopefully that will help. (Although it was at factory settings when I updated to 1.6.2)

Also I noticed occulus runtime updated and it seems to run the home studio thing with sound effects and everything and pops up instantly when I quit Skyrim. Hopefully that is not taking resources because I don’t think it can be disabled. Also the new Nvidia drivers may have changed some other settings in directX.

I also tried with Skyrim default “low” graphics settings which has low shadows LOD and 1024×768. The frame-rate and frame skipping were the same as with ultra settings (no noticeable difference)
I will say that it is not exactly the same as “judder” as with no async at all. There is some smoothness but the screen skips and jumps around uncomfortably around 2-3 times a second occasionally.

When I go home I will try disabling fluid sync and see if this helps.

    I was using 1440×1280 with DK2

Are the 8/9 resolutions no longer recommended ?

Also It seems my frame-rate (30-35) is close to the 1/2 refresh rate.

There no longer is the Async option for “full” or “half” refresh rate.

Can I return it to full by disabling the fluid sync ?

    3) By new options I really mean “fluid sync” ???

    SOLVED.

I updated my NVIDIA graphics drivers. Then the update worked perfectly.
(not sure if this was the true solution but try it if you have the same problem)

“getting head tracking right” – Is it working at all or just poorly ??? I find the HT sensitivity is very touchy and changing it by 0.1 can significantly change the feel.
I use 0.75 but it depends on your mouse sensitivity and mouse acceleration (and multi-thread input)

As for frame rate I have a gtx980 and AMD athlon 4 860K. My frame rate in GEO 3D is not that great either (25-55fps exteriors and 50-75fps in interiors). I am not sure if anyone really gets a solid constant 75fps with skyrim so disappointing as it may sound you may want to try z-buffer 3D.

I have had this before. Edge peak uses head tracking for looking around (3D edge peak) and you can set the background to black instead of “ambient”.
In my case sometimes the head track got switched backwards so when I was edge peaking the display would look plain black. BUT if I turned all the way around (180 deg) there it was behind me. Try using the recenter view button when you edge peak.

    Hope this helps.
If your display is turning all the way off you may have another problem.

Oblivion works fairly well for me.
Try the 9:8 resolution and fov of 120 with geometry 3D.
One annoyance is the fov resets every time you talk to an NPC. If you set the FOV to 120 in the Oblivion ini file then buttons and icons do not line up properly.
There is an OBSE mod that fixes this but I had difficulty getting OBSE to work properly with vorpX. So I suggest just running plain old Oblivion and having a nice easy hotkey for setting the FOV (default for vorpx is alt+V) but I suggest an easy single key because you will be pressing it a lot.
Otherwise oblivion is great. (Sorrry no experience with morrowind yet)

After you play a bit a flat screen just won’t look the same again! You really get a feel for the scale (make sure to play with the 3D seperation until it feels right, I use 0.7 for 9:8 resolution with fov 120 but is different for everyone). I found Skyrim to be the most profound because the mountains just go up and up and you don’t get a proper feel for the height and scale when you play on a monitor. Morrowind should be good too!

3D effect does not work with all resolutions even if the game does load in VorpX.
For example in skyrim you can play with a 1:1 resolution (I played with 1400×1400) and it works BUT geometry 3D does not work unless I go to 8:9 or 9:8 (or standard resolutions like 4:3 or 16:9). So for geometry 3D I play in 1280×1440.
I am not sure about other games but this was the case for me with Skyrim

You must have the oculus home software running in order for the runtime to work and to connect with VorpX.
However you don’t have to be in the store and have all that other stuff running. I like to start up the oculus home software then “sign out”. This leaves the oculus home software running and VorpX works but the whole gui with the store and all that is not open (only the user sign in screen).
So far this does not seem to affect framerate or performance, but I just don’t like to see the store, friends list and all that unnecessary stuff that is already present in Steam and a bunch of other software.
