Hi, I am trying to use VorpX with Fallout 4 and no matter what I tried I could not get a high enough FPS to play normally. I first thought to try different settings and use lower resolutions but nothing seems to change the low FPS (around 30 – 35 FPS).

Within VorpX I excluded a lot of the processes and services and made sure that I run with only necessary services but again no change.

I then saw that just having started VorpX consumes a lot of CPU power and I think this is why I get problems in game. Each of the two VorpX processes consumes between 25 – 30% of my processor power and that together with a idle processor use of around 20 – 25% means the CPU is running almost at limit (regularly around 84% to sometimes almost 97%). What can I do to get this under control because at the moment I can not use VorpX.

I am using a PiMax 4k with the latest driver version for it, on a computer with GTX 1080, Intel I5-3570K and Windows 10 Pro Version 1703.

Thank you very much in advance for any help.

Make sure to run Fallout 4 with a 16:9 or 16:10 resolution, those are the only aspect ratios really supported by the game. With a 4:3 aspect ratio (usually better for vorpX) the game boots up fine, but the UI gets messed up. Among other things that leads to the lockpicking screen being invisible. Not a vorpX issue, just the game only working correctly with widescreen resolutions.

If you still experience issues afterwards (e.g. the camera being misplaced on hacking terminals), disable the positional part of Direct VR in the vorpX menu. The normal positional tracking will still be available.

You can get a quite immersive experince out of cinema mode by choosing he “None” or “Ambience” scene and then moving the screen closer to you. That is quite useful for racing games where vorpX cannot change the ingame camera with head tracking.

I always find it difficult to name top favorites, be it games, movies, books, music or whatever. There’s something good to be found in so many things.

That said, what I recently enjoyed immensly was the first hour of Half-Life 2 Episode 1. Even more than the rest of the game this first hour is an almost perfect for VR mix of shooting and (easy) physics puzzles. If I was to make a VR first person shooter, it would be exactly such a mix of adrenaline driven sequences and puzzles to cool down in between. Must! be played standing with motion controllers.

Then there is of course Fallout 3, I just love the mood and atmosphere of this game which is amplified by VR ten fold. If you like other Bethesda RPGs more, they are also always a good choice, of course.

Next would be Bioshock 1, again mainly because I love the mood and atmosphere of the game. Exploring this beautiful Art-Deco underwater world is breathtaking in VR even if you already played through it on the monitor.

As number four I would name one that generally is considered a mediocre run of the mill shooter, but personally I find it surprisingly good, at least in VR: Aliens: Colonial Marines. If you like Sci-Fi themed games or Alien in particular, give it a try.

And last but not least there is one that isn’t actually officially supported for various reasons: Descent/Descent II with the fan-made OpenGL port D2X-XL. Probably my all-time favorite shooter game. Far from what one would consider perfect with vorpX, but if you are fond of 6DOF action and don’t mind the extremely outdated graphics, I can still recommend it. That’s a highly subjective assessment though, I’d almost be surprised if anyone else would agree. So be warned.

Honorary mention: Resident Evil 7. I really wanted to play this one and it’s great, but in the end actually too scary for me. I chickened out before the introduction level was over… VR horror isn’t for everyone, I guess.

Note that I only play games in Geometry 3D (always with a resolution of 1920×1440), as I’m one of those rare people that don’t see a difference between Z3D and 3D Reconstruction = OFF. This might be important to know for people also seeking games playable in G3D.

    For comparison purposes, my specs:
    -Oculus Rift / 1 Sensor
    -i7 4770 (4 x 3.4GHz)
    -MSI GTX 970
    -8GB RAM

As you can see, these are the absolute minimum required components for the Rift.

    5. Alien Isolation:

    – DVR scan never fails

This is one of the most fearsome experiences. Can’t play this at night. It has a clean minimal GUI, correct hand/body scale, runs very smooth at highest settings. A very fine game in VR.

    4. Fallout New Vegas:

    – DVR scan never fails

Works out of the box in DirectVR
(after the scan). Around 20 mods installed, played 15 hours and no crash. I enjoy this game very, very much. The only annoying thing is the dialogue zoom which gives me a real headache at times.

    3. Fallout 3

    – DVR scan never fails

Same as above, I just like the atmosphere in FO3 a little better.

    2. Bioshock 1 & 2

    – DVR scan never fails

Such awesome experiences! Looting is easily done without Edge Peek. Everything is sharp and clear as it can get. You have to rescan DVR after loading/entering a new level, but the scan usually succeeds. Only slight issue: Sometimes horizontal positional Head Tracking doesn’t work after DVR scan.

    1. Fallout 4

One of those crash-free wonders. Despite the low to medium settings to run it at a moderate framerate, it’s my absolute favourite and it’s still a true eye and ear candy. DirectVR ALWAYS fails for me, even when I tried it without mods. BUT…

After fiddling around for days, I found a very pleasant setting:

    – Edge Peek
    – G3D
    – rest = default values

I’m having a blast building and organizing settlements and watching settlers passing by. Combat and looting is also very addicting (much more in VR). V.A.T.S. feels ok as well.

@ Ralf: I’m really curious what your favourite VorpX games are. After spending so much time optimizing all these games, are you bored of all of them or do you still enjoy particular games using your software?

When I set custom resolution to 1280×1440 with CRU, my monitor becomes scrambled in game when I tried it. I know windowed mode may solve this, but the resolution is unavailable in windowed mode. I am tring this in Fallout 3 at the moment. Is there anyway to make the custom resolutions appear in windowed mode for this and any other titles I may try in the future?

300 and up Euros for an I7 at the moment here in germany. I think i wait for a few versions of VorpX futher before spending that ;-)

I think ill first try some “weaker” games which ill do anyway because i have so many of them and keep Fallout 4 for later.

Maybe ill throw my VR glasses in the bin one day when i dont soon get used to that serious motion sicknes i am experiencing. So ill wait a bit in any case.

Anyway, thanks i appreciate your advice.

Unfortunately that’s a belief that’s outlived it’s truth. Some games used to benefit from disabling hyperthreading but that’s long been sorted out. the issue was that it could cause stuttering. Games like Skyrim that REALLY needed all the power you could give it had that issue but code updates have long since fixed the problem. The other meme that overstayed it’s welcome is about ram speed not mattering. It does today with the amount of data being moved at high CPU clocks in most games. Some like the Bethesda games see double digit frame increases going above 3000mhz. Others, less. But it’s a rare exception today in games, when faster ram doesn’t help.

Today, the issue is that there are too many PHYSICAL, much less virtual cores for games to fully utilize. Which is a good problem to have, all things considered ;). I’ll give you my standard advice. Buy the biggest and fastest you can afford. ESPECIALLY ram. Fast ram will help a LOT. As in 3200 and up. A 4 core/8 thread I7 of 6700K or above clocked to the hilt is a beautiful thing and will do the job admirably on any game out today in VR/VorpX even with a lot of mods (as in Skyrim or Fallout). It will likely be a couple years before the games catch up to Ryzen and the new Intel core monsters so for now, clock is still very much king…but a 4 core/8 thread chip really is a must for VR.

I would maybe hold off on the GPU and think about maybe an SSD if you don’t already have one for your SKyrim/Fallout rig. I would think your video card will give you the same performance on those 2 cards compared to an upgrade, just because the limitation of the actual games and how they are made to function. That being said I would start your SKyrim VR roll with OldRim.

Get it set up and running and looking the way you want BEFORE adding a ton of mods. Once you got it looking good as far as resolution, FOV and vorpX tweaking then its time to patch it up. Get all the memory patches boosters installed and calibrated for your system alongside your ENB injector to make them work. Once you got it to that point you can go nuts with mods, but be smart about modding, use the same common sense you would for modding flat screen and you’ll be fine.

You should be able to get what you want now from your system and GPU, just make sure you patch your OldRim. Also I would recommend using a game pad over motion controls at this point simply because of a lack of inputs. If your clever you can get your controller to have all needed inputs plus some that are required from mods. Around 1000 hours deep after 3 years of playing with vorpX and it only gets better so if your a Skyrim freak just dive in and get it set up, you’ll be glad you did.

Minecraft is a good example of a game that a modern studio wouldn’t touch but has had the longevity and engagement that surpasses your Fallouts and your GTAs.

Indeed. Minecraft is amazing in VR with the Vivecraft mod too.

I also disagree. I had some incredible VR gaming experiences in Star Trek: Bridge Crew, Ironwolf VR, Bullets and More, Pavlov, Onward, Vivecraft, Raw Data, Climbey, The Art of Fight, Quell 4D, Warpaint, Elite, and Battlezone.

On the other hand I’ve also been having a blast playing New Vegas for 95 hours and counting using VorpX. I love both VorpX and native VR games.

I think you can and should enjoy all the options 🙂

I am curious. Are you playing New Vegas in Cinema / Geometry mode or in full directVR mode?

I play New Vegas in full Direct VR mode with a wireless Xbox One controller standing. It feels very immersive even with a gamepad. Ralf also suggested to me to try it using the Vive controllers instead of the gamepad because it frees up your hands.

It really feels great to be able to turn with your body and look around with your head. With standing mode you basically take full advantage of the rotational and positional tracking.

Hi guys I’m new to vorpx and as these two are my favorite games I tried to get them working right away. I searched the forums and it wasn’t good news a lot of people only got them to work with no or barely any mods and support for fully modded versions just wasn’t there

but I’m stubborn so umm yeh it actually works this is what I have/did I hope it helps anyone that wants to go back to these amazing games.

(fallout 3 with fose and fully wanderer edition mods is on bottom of post)
MORROWIND WITH WORKING DISTANT LANDS! WITH LANDMASS MODS/GAMEPLAY MODS/GRAPHIC SHADERS/REFLECTIONS WORKING)

    modlist
Morrowind rebirth (giant land mass/city/gameplay overhaul better then MOSG imho)
Tamriel rebuild (giant main land added right of morrowind)
    Better Heads
    Better Armor
    Better Bodies
XE Sky Variations (from MGEXE sky and weather mod)
LGNPC (dialogue only version, large dialogue mod)
    Quick char (to skip intro)
Merged Objects (merged list to make all armor/clothing mods work better)
    Morrowind Graphic Extender XE
    4gb patch
    Morrowind Code patch

This all runs at 1600/1200 or 1440/1080 depending on your machine. FPS drop in seyda neen/balmora but are decent everywhere else
Cinema mode close up to the screen 80-90% you can use vorpx controller or just go keyboard.

Key to not getting the graphic glitch that makes everything grey/white. In MGEXE make sure you turn off the extenders FPS counter. This is the reason your graphics is glitching out. You can have the ingame engines fps counter (which will be bottom right) but any other fps counter will cause vorpx to glitch out into white/grey polygons.

This is the same glitch you get after installing MOSG and I know that has an fps counter to so I’m sure that’s linked to the white/grey polygon screen glitch BUT I haven’t tested it on that cause I’m using rebirth. Rebirth changes more on the landmass then overhaul does so if rebirth is working you should be able to get overhaul working also.

Assuming you get all the latest mod versions from nexus make sure FPS counter is disabled you can just run distant lands and use ALL SHADERS/reflections etc etc it looks amazing really and hooks without issues. Use MLOX for mod load order amd testool to merge lists if needed depending on your preferred mods.

On MGEXEgui you can easily reproduce the graphic glitch by ticking/unticking the fps counter on the first tab.

FALLOUT 3 with FOSE working WANDERER EDITION
so I spend a ton of time getting all recommended mods to play on wanderer edition.

    MODS
    Fallout 3 Wanderer Edition
    Marts mutants
    weapon mod kit
    project beauty (fallout redesigned)
    EVE
    texture packs
    DarnUI interface
    blackened compatibility patch
    FOIP for weapon mod kit
    Expanded Unofficial patch
    4gb patch
    LOOT (mod load order)
    FO3Edit for making merged patch

theres an extensive guide on wanderer and steam how to do a perfect new installation (theres to much steps) so you can just follow that. Make sure your using Fallout mod manager.

Then after doing all that and making your merged lists and what not it plays but it wont hook unless you don’t use fose. Problem is your mods wont work without fose right?

So make sure the game runs, try it out without vorpx.

You can play with controller but youll miss a lot of keybinds for all the new gameplay additions so id go with keyboard mouse on this one.

Once your game is running perfectly its time to get your VR on.

go into your steam folder and rename your falloutlauncher to something else, like falloutlauncherbackup. Now rename your foselauncher to falloutlauncher.

Now you can just launch the game from steam and it will use fose to launch BUT NOW IT HOOKS!!!!!

if you need to change resolution or graphic settings you can do this in your fallout mod manager. I’m running at 1600/1200 with AA and every setting maxed, lower if needed.

For me I prefer cinema mode over direct VR even tho direct vr works normal framerate seems fine but when you turn your head it stutters at times for me so I prefer just go cinema, its better for pipboy/interface/dialogue imho anyways.

    Theres 2 things for preference.
There is no FOV slider in game but if you go to your documents/my games/fallout3 folder you can tweak the fallout.ini,

    under [display] find
    fPipboy1stPersonFOV=70.0
    fDefault1stPersonFOV=85.0000

this lets you tweak first person FOV but also how close your PIP boy is to your face when you pull it up. This setting worked best for me but its all personal preference play around with it.

On the pipboy the bottom 3 buttons click seem a bit off the mouse but clicking on the actual options in the pipboy seem fine.

then I upped the FOVassist in vorpx by 0.5 (again personal preference) somehow felt the depth feel more right in megaton etc.

Hope this helps anyone out there wanting to play these classics but maybe didn’t cause they couldn’t get it to work with mods!
These 2 are definetly in my top 5 games of all times and I absolutely love replaying them in VR.

I bought it and it’s just awful I wasted my money over someone who won’t help me? let’s see.
I launched steamVR and it broke completely and I had to reinstall it again. I started up vorpX and configured RE7 and Fallout 4 both did not work anymore. Fallout 4 wasn’t detected through steam and Resident evil 7 crashes.

Hi, so I’m trying to get DAO to work with vorpx. So far, Vorpx has worked well for Fallout 4 and Saint’s Row 3 for me, but I’m only able to make it start in Admin mode. Otherwhise, it doesn’t do anything. Now, for DAO, even in admin mode, Vorpx doesn’t do anything and the game gets stuck in an endless loop closing itself and restarting every 10 seconds. Any idea on what I could try? I’m using the HTC vive.

Hopefully find the form or some method to actually get this.

With the arrival of new future announced VR versions for Fallout 4 and Skyrim, VR support by using Alien isolation mod, Doom3 mod and bfg edition, silent update for native Dying Light support with Cv1, and the currently developing mod For Half Life 2 VR …
The current situation makes Elder Scrolls Online now, among a few others, one of the new best candidates to play in VR using Vorpx.

The inclusion of 3D Geometry for games based on Unreal Engine 4 and Frostbite engine, would also be an improvement that Vorpx and users, shout out in this times.

How well Fallout 4 looks hugely depends on your PC’s specs and how much performance you are willing to sacrifice. If you can afford it, run the game (any game actually) at high resolutions, e.g. 1920×1440 or even higher. That has a profound effect on Fallout 4. Due to its blurry antialising high resolutions help tremendously in regard to a crisp image.

Even on a high end machine it’s advisable to reduce graphics detail though for higher resolutions and/or switch to Z3D, which is a lot faster, but of course doesn’t look as natural as Geometry 3D.

The hand/weapon FOV also affects the Pipboy, hence unfortunately it doesn’t really make sense to adjust it. Technically that is possible on the Direct VR page of the vorpX menu, but doing so makes the Pipboy appear too small to read anything.

@Ralph,, pls can u hint what graphic effects to use with CV1.

    Watercooled I7 6900k, GTX1080TI watercooled, 6 ssd 500gb

    Skyrim is perfect !
I do have skyrim at a 1920X1440 res. installed. No effects only vsync enabled.
The image is very clear , no coronas flickering or other distorting things just a pain clear image.

I do have GTA5 installed but the image is not comparable to skyrim its so bad.
The resolution is 1920X1440. The image has coronas, flickering no clear image fences look like flickering endless.

same in Witcher 3 (checked all resolution even 4k )slightly more clear as GTA5 but it looks like too crispy with little corona on everything

Fallout4 has a decent image almost comparable to Skyrim.

Which effects to avoid and which to use , i tried all day long and iam fed up now .
The image on screen is ok but in cv1 its all screwed pls give some hints
