I have a wishlist with nice-to-have features longer than you may believe. Since changing the bindings can be done inside the game, this isn’t really high priority, sorry.

I am having a similar (but it doesn’t seem exact) problem with SkyrimSE. Starting Vorpx, starting SkyrimSE from inside Steam (“Play”) – the Launcher comes up. Press “Play” on the Launcher…Launcher exits and then restarts. I never get to the game when using Vorpx. Works in 2D (normal mode) fine. I’m running the latest SkyrimSE (steam updates automatically) and Oculus (also updates automatically).

Any chance your problem has returned?

Sorry Ralf – I might be being thick here.

    I’m asking:

“What is the most performant way to display a game inside VR in ‘virtual theatre’ mode”.

I know of a few alternative methods:

    1. VorpX’s virtual cinema
    2. Steam itself
    3. Bigscreen
    4. Virtual Desktop

I don’t expect you to know for sure whether 2, 3 or 4 are more performant. But is VorpX likely to be faster or slower than any of them?

In your answer you said “directly hooking into games is almost always the better alternative compared to capturing the output with external program like the vorpX desktop viewer or other programs that work similar do.”.

I wasn’t actually talking about the desktop viewer – I’m talking about playing a game in VorpX’s virtual cinema for any game that can be tricked into doing so.

Is *that* likely to be more performant than the other 3 options?

Hi, I started vorpx today after a few weeks abscence, it updated itself and now nothing works.
I have a Vive headset and confirmed it works with flyinside + fsx and with steam vr games.
    I uninstalled vorpx and resinstalled.

arx fatalis just starts without being detected.
Operation Flashpoint and Arma 3 give me the message: “vorpx could not initiailze your Occulous Rift. could not load libOVRRT” multiple times until I kill the game in task manager
Assassins Creed 2 just flashes something too quick to read and dies unless I kill vorpx, in which case it starts on the desktop.

I tried creating a desktop shortcut with the same result. With and without virus checker enabled. All are steam games.

I don’t really have a solution to your issue besides very general hints like updating graphics drivers, headset runtime etc., sorry.

One important heads-up though: disabling the asnyc rendering option severely reduces performance and – if at all – should only be considered for quite old games where that doesn’t matter since they run fast enough anyway. Without async rendering there is a lot more “time warping” happening inside your headset’s runtime (meaning inserted artificial frames in between real frames), which probably is the cause for what you experienced.

Does vorpx or is there a future release that supports multigpu (both SLI and crossfire)? Flyinside (a similar product for FLightsims) for FSX & P3D is starting to implement multigpu in their drivers.

3D is possible. I made it possible with depth buffer access in reshade through a custom shader by blueskyknight for SBS 3D

I havent been able to use 0.6 runtime for Oculus (in extended mode) with headtracking as of yet because of opentrack detects the oculus when its in direct mode, not extended. Which is strange it can’t. I dont care that much if there is a latency issue, it isnt a fast paced game, so it wouldnt be to terrible for the sake of added immersion that you can turn your head while being hunted down, or just in the game in general. I played the first hour with 3D depth alone and no HT, it was still a great level of immersion inside the headset. Ill work on it more when I have time and hopefully come up with a solid method. (As of now might only work with people using Devkits and runtime switcher.)

Guys, it’s $40. How much money have you heaped into your VR set up? Stop acting like babies and crying about a damn demo. ALL of the “native” VR “games” are just DEMOS. If you want to enjoy AAA titles in 3D then Vorpx is the solution. Just as Ralph states over and over, YOUR MILEAGE WILL VARY. It’s not “dodging” the question, its the answer. Depending on how nit picky and bitchy you are about certain things YES certain Vorpx experiences will most definitively bunch up your panties. HOWEVER: if you ARE the type of person who is comfortable with reading and following instructions, as well as being able to think for your self and adjust settings then Vorpx is the solution you’re looking for. It’s worth the money. No doubt about it. Vorpx is a must have for me as I honestly cant stand the Oculus crap they pump out and call games. The only other VR app with as much polish and continued updates is FlyInside for FSX. These 2 VR apps are worth 10X what they charge. I’ve spent 1000’s of hours using these 2 products and will continue to do so. Thanks again Ralph, you’re the man.

If you ask me, then I say that the immersion that the world of a Skyrim or Bioshock provides in VR outweighs any potential technical glitch by an order of magnitude.

Well, using your words, I´m afraid of those glitches breaking the previous immersion. It is useless to have Skyrim in VR if I have to suffer issues with headtracking or other problems constantly. It kills the immersion completely.

Instead of thinking inside the game..I would end up thinking about the glitches.

Just be aware that vorpX applies VR to games that were never ever meant to be played in 3D, let alone in VR, and that that can imply some technical compromises. Whether that is OK for you or not, only you can decide

    Actually I cannot decide.
I have to BUY it (40U$D) just to see how it works.

There is no TRIAL or DEMO version. Videos on youtube are clearly not enough, and I´m not sure about possible issues. so…

That is something that makes me doubt of buying, if the software is good, then a way to test or refund should be available to let users DECIDE.

stuttering with headtracking only happens if you open vorpx once in a game.
do your settings inside the game, once you done, save vorpx settings then restart the game, stuttering is no more once you restart it, but once you open vorpx inside the game, stuttering comes again.

maybe there is a way to change the fov inside the game, by tweaking the ini.

maybe there is a vorpx game profile compatible with this game even if re7 uses a new engine.

if someone finds a working vorpx profile with 3D geometry for re7 please let us know, thank you !

I agree, especially now that we can load custom backgrounds.

I recently enyoyed Woolfe: The Redhood Diary a lot in cinema mode. A nice little 2.5d jump & run. Would love to see Limbo or Inside supported.

Sorry if that question been answered before, but is the VorpX is a seated only experience on the Vive? I played a VR mod of Doom 3 and Penumbra and they were fully roomscaled, I had to go on my knees to crawl inside corridors etc. Thx! :)

Great news – Take On Mars runs in VR just fine with vorpX!

This is the first short guide, after getting it running properly for the first time. Maybe there will be better ways in the future. Its fun, and its really playable.

    * First, you need vorpX installed and basic knowledge about it (vorpx.com). More important you need time and patience to get vorpx/TKOM running – its not plug-and-play.
    * Then create a new game profile based on ArmA 2 and set the tic box for “Keep games specific options” (>Local Profiles> button “create a new profile based on this one”… > ok)
    * Now you have to assign the TKOM.exe to this new profile (open/activate the new profile > Add-button> navigate to Steam…>Take on Mars>TKOM.exe. Finally apply this profile to vorpX >apply button).
    * Start the game and access the vorpX-ingame menu. The vorpx-menu is normally bound to the delete key.
    * Once the menu is open change the 3D mode: >Main setting> 3D-constructions > choose “Z-Adaptive”. That will change the weird split view in your VR-device to a proper playable perspective.
    * Change the graphic options depending on your GPU (see my settings below). Choose FOV 90 degrees. Because you are inside a space suite, a much wider angle would move you too deeply inside the helmet – does not look good.
    * Start a mission. And there you are on Mars in VR! Have fun!

I run TKOM with a game resolution of 2556×1440 and medium/high graphic settings (HTC Vive, i5 6500, 8 GB RAM, Sapphire Nitro R 390 8GB GPU RAM).

@ Immersivegamer : Thanks for the kind words. I can’t promise anything regarding the controller mapping, but I will think about it. There are a couple of things to consider here. The two most important ones are that for one profiles/mappings are supposed to always work on Touch and Vive wands (and potential future devices) the same way, which limits options a bit. The other one is that I always try to find a balance between desirable customization and the ‘too-many-options-issue’ that somewhat plagues vorpX already. Always a tough decision to not offer a specific option that sounds absolutely useful on it’s own, but sometimes there may be a greater good that speaks against it. That said, your suggestion is worth to be considered, I just can’t promise something here and now.

BTW: If you can live without the DPAD, you can disable the “Allow Left Stick Shift” option, which will maintain the left stick’s normal functionality with the shift button pressed.

Not sure about your gamepad issue in Fallout NV. Seems to work as intended here in both keyboard/mouse mode as well as in gamepad mode, at least in a short test. Stupid question: did you enable the gamepad in the Fallout NV options?

The Bioshock Infinite Direct VR profile seems to be a bit wonky indeed. I almost feared that while doing it, but included it anyway since the game is just too good in VR. I’ll definitely check whether something can be done about the cutscenes issue. Having to restart the game after each cutscene isn’t good. Fingers crossed that there is a way to address it. If there is one, it will be done.

@ Tigger : Two reasons for the visible controllers: 1. It feels a lot more real if you actually see something, even if no physical interaction is possible. 2. The controllers always show the current button mapping, which I consider essential unless you know it inside out. There probably will be optional, more fitting representations for different types of games in the future (maybe wooden wands for fantasy games, a pistol for shooters etc.) for people who don’t need to see the mapping anymore, but there definitely should be something. It adds a lot.
