Got it, thanks again Ralf! Loving VorpX support on my Vive!

How exactly did you fix this issue? Portal 2 simply refuses to work, I have reinstalled VorpX, Portal 2, tried running as both Admin and not Admin, yet it is still unable to find the settings file.

    Thank you :)

So far the game I have thought worked really great, with a good 3D effect and acceptable framerate and usability:

    Skyrim
    Morrowind
    STALKER games
    Farcry 3
    Fallout 4

Ive found that I am most comfortable in the virtual cinema, with the screen as close as possible, with headtracking enabled. It still feels like Im in VR, and I can always look down and check the HUD easily. I usually completely forget that I am in the cinema, and it works great for keyboard and mouse use. All of my experience is basically directed at this type of use. Here are some other games I have tried that Ive enjoyed, but have some minor drawbacks from my testing:

Outlast: This game works great, but I find that Geometry mode creates weird shadow issues, and on other 3D settings there are some minor graphical issues. Its not bad, and totally playable. on z3D modes, it seems like there could be a little more depth with the 3D slider.
Oblivion: Slow on G3D, Z3D modes dont seem to give quite enough depth that I would like. Game still looks great, and is very playable.
Portal 2: Something just does not look right in this game. Im not sure what it is, but it looked very very wrong when I tried it. I might try it again, but the first experience really put me off.

I may have forgotten some games that I have tried. So far I have been very impressed with VorpX!

    Viver here.
I have regular crashes+reboots as well.
Sometimes I get a game in a working state with vorpx (~half of the time), but then it crashes later.
    Some observed events triggering issue:
    – portal 2 level change
    – when I try to bring up the vorpx menu (del key), this usually does the trick
    – or simply starting up game and after cutscene videos, showing game menu.

Fwiw, I had similar crashes+reboots with Virtual Desktop, altspaceVR, and sporadically some others.

    gear: asus mobo + r9 390
Clean radeon driver install of latest drivers + removed all the shovelware like playstv, raptor, + removed asus AI suite + removed OC tools like msi afterburner and sapphire trixx.
No overclocks, stable temps on hardware.

Just adding info to the pile, hope it helps.
When vorpx it works it is pretty neat; I’m just sore I can’t get it to run stable.
    (Gorram bleeding edge tech… ;-)
    Cheers.

Hi, I also have this problem with most of my games, setting path not found. I think the only ones it hasn’t been working on are ones that store the configs in the steam folder. (ie fallout 4, dead space 3, bioshock infinite work fine and I know they use the docs folder, while Portal 2, Metro Last light redux, serious sam, talos principle, antichamber did not work.)

All software runs under the same account and level (ie user only, no admin use) although I did try running the config as admin to be sure, no folders redirects to network shares (home folders all default locations), tested games have all been run at least once.

Registry entries correctly point to steam folder:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam]
    “SteamExe”=”d:/steam/steam.exe”
    “SteamPath”=”d:/steam”

Running Windows 10, fairly clean and new install, rest of system is on C drive, only steam is on D drive, no issues with any other software that accesses configs or games folders without manual input.

If this is not fixable, couldn’t a simple option to export optimized game settings be added so you can replace the configs yourself?

Edit: Btw I am running the latest Beta version, with the Vive and so far after a lot of tweaking it has been working fine.

I have a DK1 and Runtime 8. Today I tried to use vorpx like normal and I noticed it was starting very slowly. It eventually popped up a message that it was updating as a newer version was available. The update completed and I tried to start vorpx. I noticed it takes a long time for vorpx to start and I mean a long time. Like in the area of 2-3 mins from the time I click start to the time the program shows up in the tray. I then tried to run Dirt3 and a error message pops up saying vorpx failed to initialize Oculus. I tried portal2 which worked well before and the same error.

Are the DK1 and runtime 8 still supported? If no can I get a version that wont auto update until my CV1 arrives in a couple of months?

Please make sure that the mouse is enabled in Dear Esther. If there is mouse look in a game, there also always automatically is head tracking with vorpX.

Not really sure about the others, sorry. Half-Life 2 and Portal were recently tested here during the Vive tests, so they should definitely work. Have to check Bioshock 2.

First and foremost try to disable Avira. It may also affect injection, just as it caused your install issue. Also look into potential injection conflicts with other programs on your PC. Disabling all background processes that would not be there after a fresh, Microsoft only Windows install is the best way to trouble shoot.

I suspect I’m having the same problem. I’ve tried both half-life 2 and portal 2 and both (usually) give me an error stating “Failed to create D3D Device!” and close. When they don’t give me that error I just get audio and a black screen on the HMD. I finally got Skyrim to load into the intro stuff, but I only get audio and it sticks on the Bethesda logo with no actual menu. I tried disabling the intro video and then it just sticks on the imperial symbol with no menu text.

In both cases I’ve tried swapping to the vive as my primary display. That’s how I got Skyrim to load into the main menu, but both HL2 and Portal 2 still didn’t work. Setting the game resolutions to the vive’s native resolution had no effect. Disabling steam overlay and SteamVR theater mode had no effect.

My vorpx install is a relatively fresh install (within the last two weeks) and I reinstalled Skyrim to see if that helped but not portal 2 or HL2. Neither vorpx or steam are run as administrator.

The 45fps aren’t 45fps in your headset. vorpX adds async timewarp, so in your headset the game runs with 90fps. Nothing to worry about.

If a game runs as fast as Portal 2, you can disable FluidSync in the vorpX ingame menu (display page). This way it can run with native 90fps. That’s only recommended for older games that run fast enough though, otherwise please leave this at the default.

Some games allow you to adjust HUD size and depth on the image page of the vorpX ingame menu. Not sure ATM whether that is true in Portal2.

Another option would be to disable the crosshair in the game’s options menu. I’m quite sure that this is possible in Portal 2.

Adjusting FOV is crucial for a good experience. If the optimizer fails for some reason or there is no optimizer entry, please either check for tutorials online (google FOV + Game) or use the workarounds that vorpX provides if that also fails.

The link below for example explains how to bind the FOV command to your W key in Portal 2 if the Game Optimizer fails for you.

There also is a quick and dirty setup described in the vorpX help, called the 1-2-3 Game Setup. While not providing the optimum possible, this essentially works with every game within seconds, supported as well as unsupported. You can find it in the config app.

For me, Vorpx is not an expense for a game, but a tool to adjust the VR on all 3D games

All these games are supported except theHunter, Vorpx hooked .dll
but for all, remains add manuelement setting, and even with online profiles, it did not help.

What I have seen is a feeling of being too close, too zoomed. And when I move the head, a kind of mismatch between the geometry of perspective and apparent motion. maybe due to lag, FPS, or even not optimum parameters.

Portal 2 for example, the Game Setting Optimization seems to fail (no path found), W Key appears to do nothing
I can change FoV 120 with consol, but it will not be saved
and make changes in the game is pretty exhausting because you have to read the small text too often, or too close, even with the Vorpx Ingame Menu. If one reduces the zoom, this shifts the mouse cursor postion in the game menu buttons

Ralf, have you some tips on how to establish a good base ? (I already rule my resolution to 1280×1024 the game, off Vsync, quality min, 4/3) but I do not know if the beta version still has some problems or if I lack settings.

Only the Vive support is beta, not vorpX in general anymore.

Talos Principle: seems to be broken (again) after a patch. Thanks for the heads up. I will look into it. It’s agreat game for VR, but it might just end up being taken from the compatible games list this time. Something similar happened three times already.

DXHR: Please try switching between DX9 and DX11. This is one of the DX11 test cases here. It *should* run with 45fps+ normally with G3D in DX11 with dips below that in some areas.. Maybe Dx9 works better for you though. Also make sure to try the default graphics quality settings and set the resolution to the recommended 1280×1024.

Just checked GTA5, HL2 and Portal to make sure not to say anything wrong. All three worked.

General advice: games not hooking at all are usually a sign of an injection conflict with some other program on your PC. Typical candidates are anti virus programs, any sort of GPU/CPU utility, ingame video recording/streaming programs and generally everything that can show notifications in games (like some chat programs for example).

The best way to trouble shoot this is to close/uninstall every background program that would not be there after a fresh Microsoft only Windows install.

I purchased VORPX for my HTC Vive too and it is an interesting experience – however, only half of the games I’ve tried are working :

    1) GTA V will not work : after seeing the GTA Launcher, I get a message “GTA5.exe not found, please re-install the game”. But that only happens when VORPX is loaded, otherwise it launches fine.
    2) Deus Ex : with all settings to minimum and a very low resolution, I barely get 10 fps (although I have a GTX 980 ti and good CPU too).
    3) Talos Principle : will not launch, I get a “Croteam crash reporter” (but then again, that is only if VORPX is loaded in memory)
    4) Portal 1 and Half Life 2 will simply load normally on my screen and do not even show in the Vive.

Otherwise, Mass Effect 2, Portal 2, Alien Isolation and Mirrors Edge work fine …

I understand we are still Beta but was wondering if anybody had same problem and found a solution ?

The install isn’t working for me.

    1. It wants me to shut down Chrome (which I do) and Cortana and Search (which I don’t seem to be able to do).

    2. I am using a non-administrator account (which is where I do all my day-to-day).

    3. When I run install sometimes it works and launches the config.

    4. There is NO VorpX icon in the start menu (windows 10) or on the desktop.

    5. I can go to the folder and run the VorpX desktop from there–but:
    (a) when I launch Steam I see it *sometimes*. Moving my head makes it go away.
    (b) when I launch Portal (the only thing I’ve tried) the Vive indicator light goes red (turns off).

    Help?

Portal 2 only shows a vertical bar of the game. It’s listed as compatible yet it doesn’t work. What’s up?

I’m using the Rift CV1 and the latest version of VorpX
