Never tried an external gamepad tool tbh, you should be able to use xpadder if you change the “Handle gamepads internally” option in the vorpX menu ([DEL]). You can also change key bindings for the internal gamepad emulation there, that will most likely be enough, except for complex multi-key macros.
Skyrim runs below 60fps on most machines outside, hence the judder. Reducing graphics settings will help, also vorpX’s “G3D Latency Enhancement” (input page of the ingame menu). If you can live without Geometry 3D, Z-Buffer 3D doubles your framerate, but has a less convincing 3D-effect and no positional tracking.
First of all, great work so far Ralf. For a beta injector I’m pretty impressed with the work you’ve done. I searched for answers to my questions but didn’t find what I was looking for in the forum.
I have Skyrim running fine with the DK2, positional tracking and all. However I’m vexed by the controls. I prefer to use an Xbox gamepad with games like Skyrim so that I can sit back and relax while using the rift. I’m aware that you suggest turning off gamepad support via the game menu in favor of the built in controller emulation. I am, however, finding that the controls are quite finicky using the gamepad with the emulation.
I tried using Xpadder to create my own controller map but it conflicts with the built in emulation and leads to all kinds of problems.
My questions are as follows:
1) Is there a control map that shows the Skyrim gamepad controls used by the vorpX emulator, and can they be remapped?
2) Is there a way to disable the built in emulation so that I can use Xpadder instead without the conflict? I’d like to have access to the vorpX-specific macros like [SHIFT][SPACE] to recenter, middle mouse key to edge peek (seems to be initiated with Start with vorpX emulator…?) and shift+middle mouse key etc.
Controls and judder are my two biggest roadblocks to enjoying Skyrim in DK2 right now. That actually brings up another questions, is there a way to see the FPS in game without a third party app like FRAPS? I know you don’t recommend FRAPS, but I think performance is to blame for my stuttering issues. I have a 3770K and two 780Ti’s (SLI disabled per your suggestion) but I still need to play with the graphics options to get smoother experience. I think the graphics are still set to Ultra and I do have some texture mods, I’ll have to play around with them to get an acceptable framerate.
But yeah, TL:DR – gamepad controls, is there a key map and is it rebindable and barring that, can I disable the emulation to use Xpadder, and FPS counter.
Thanks for your time, keep up the good work!
ok, I think I have fallout 3 and skyrim working. I was using an emb with skyrim and I think that was causing vorpx to not “hook in” and recognize. As for new vegas I changed the resolutions, but still I’m getting the render error. Here is a new question. I’m using an xbox 360 controller and everytime I play skyrim or fallout 3 I don’t have any head tracking and need to use the right analog stick and suggestions on this issue?
Positional tracking is Skyrim only currrently. More games to follow.
Regarding FOV please refer the the “How to get the most out of vorpX guide” in the documentation. There are several strategies how to deal with this.
For Bioshock vorpX offers a pretty easy one by using the ‘Game settings optimizer’ in the config app. If the optimized settings are not applied for some reason in your case, you can also use the built in “3D FOV Enhancement” or edit the according .ini manually. You can usually find short tutorials for many games by googling for “FOV + gamename”.
Thanks Ralf! I got it to work by making sure the resolution of Skyrim is 1920×1080. And i set my other monitor to extend desktop instead of clone with my rift as primary monitor. makes it a little tricky to start a game but hey it works.
Skyrim looks really great with the rift so kudos to vorpx for making it work.
One problem I have is the foliage in the game seems to be flashing a little bit (like a neon lightbulb, but only a small value change) which gets nauseating after a while. It could be my quality settings are too high though. have to experiment.
Please send a screenshot of the processes tab of your task manager showing all running processes to support |at| vorpx com . Maybe we can spot something you overlooked. Skyrim is definitely not known to cause such issues regularly, this almost certainly is a local issue.
Along with it please also send your vorpx.log after trying to launch the game a few times. The logfile can be found in your temp folder. Usually C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\temp
This will be looked into tomorrow. It’s very late here already, also Sunday.
Did you try other games BTW?
This indeed sounds like something preventing vorpX from hooking into the game. Please check whether there is a d3d9.dll present in your Skyrim folder. Might be there from a so called ENB mod for example. Remove it if you find one.
There are more things that can block vorpX. If you haven’t done so already please go through the trouble shooting guide in the documentation.
Yeah managed to tweak it in skyrim and worked really good after playing with the settings a bit. Realised that I wasn’t pressing OK SAVE so nothing was changing. Looks good now. Though in some games its impossible to keep the [del] menu open and the mouse cursor does not work so cant navigates vorpxs in game menus. Are there any fixes for that?
I have tried following the instructions in the VorpX guide and setting FOV to 120 (like in Skyrim) and it still seems very zoomed in. Maybe this is how the game looks? I also tried Dear Esther in which VorpX tells you to set the FOV slider all the way and so I did, but the game is still really zoomed in.
Finally get it work. Everyghing was more or less confusing bue here its all the things what I noticed. At first if I chosed “only on rift” with display as main sceen, it was started normally at sceen like I said and if I chosed “only on [main display]” it crash _but_ error and black game screen goes to rift. So “I want rift” -> main display, “I want screen” -> rift. Also resolution was confusing since some way when I check skyrim settings it just didn’t show me any options to resolution, so I just think that ok vorpx is maybe doing some magic???
Anyway problems was that it just didn’t run on right resolution I thin.
I get it work with these setting Rift as main screen and manually set 1080p resolution to config. On last try when rift was primary, vorpx “only on screen” -> screen “only on rift” -> rift, but if rift was primary “only on screen” -> screen, “only on rift” -> screen(!).
But yea its not fun to use still, have to test this with better display since without clone and as rift primary screen this is very uncomfortable to use.
It’s not officially supported, but you should be able the use ENB with the ENB injector (can be downloaded from the website of the origial ENB author). The versions where DLLs are copied into the Skyrim directory will probably not work.
That being said, there are absolutely no guarantess regarding any ENB mod.
Thanks for the answer Ralf!
No, i don’t do anything special, it’s running in true fullscreen mode. This happens even with only DK2 as a display, not only in extended mode, which makes no sense at all. Same thing when i select my regular TV as the only screen, the game runs in VorpX mode but the “multi cursor” error doesn’t disspapear.
D2R does not work for me in Skyrim, i get the following error when launching the game in that mode:
Other games like Alan Wake or Mirror’s Edge work just fine. By the way, i’m using Windows 8.1, R9 280X
I hope this feedback helps!
Do you run Skyrim windowed or force it to be windowed through some external tool? If so, please do not do this. Make sure the game runs in true fullscreen mode.
Not sure what else may cause this, especially with the Rift as primary display and vorpX set to “Use system settings” display wise, which is the most compatible option.
Trying ‘Direct To Rift’ mode might also be worth a try. It’s not officially supported by vorpX at all currently, but may work in Skyrim.
vorpX only provides head tracking in games with mouselook per default. Positional tracking is Skyrim only currently.
You can setup vorpX to act as gamepad on the input page of the ingame menu for some head tracking in F1 2013 and similar games, but that’s not the best option. It’s better to use an external program like OpenTrack (which might not be DK2 ready yet though). Unfortunately we can’t implement similar TrackIR emulation due to legal reasons.
If you use Windows 8, please check the Windows 8 sticky in the general forum section.
Now were getting to the easier parts:
The zoomed in image can be resolved by following the hint in the first vorpX window that appears when you start Skyrim. The keyword here is FOV. Check the “How to get the most out of vorpX guide” in the documentation for more about this in general.
Menus: vorpX has a special feature to deal with this called EdgePeek (press or hold the middle mouse button). Additional information about this and other useful things can be found in the “quick reference” of the documentation.
Reading both sections of the documentation will help you a lot in regard to learning what vorpX can do. Most basic usage related questions that came up over the last 10 months are covered there.
