Does this have 6dof? No offenece to paradisedecay, but the guy runs a lot of videos claiming games are fullvr with working headtracking and either 6dof is non-existent or the stereo doesn’t render correctly (like Doom2016). Would like clarification on that before I purchase the game.

For clarification, is the mod out for the regular version of vorpx yet or is it just the standalone version at the moment? if it’s just the standalonee version, is there an ETA when regular vorpx users can expect to see it rolled out in an update?

Kinda don’t want to mess around with varying installs in order to keep things clean.

I haven’t tried virtual desktop’s synchronous spacewarp with vorpx but I tried it with Project Cars 2 and a few other heavy PCVR titles… it was a horrible experience and it was super horrible compared to airlink. I suspect the claims it’s better than airlink’s own variant is based on hyper specific scenarios of on screen movement and performance loads. Airlink performed far superior in terms of perceived framerate smoothness and reducing motion artifacts.

I have a lot of empathy for VD and its developer. They’re in a tough spot and facebook’s treatment of them has been petty and cruel, but VD just doesn’t perform as well and is just a rather clumsy layer added to a not particularly great user experience.

I had no idea they had rolled this out until reading these posts.

The updated motion smoothing implementation seems to be a BIG improvement on the previous effort based on some quick and dirty tests. I previously found the oculus variant lightyears ahead of the competition and mandatory for a select few games. For comparison, I found the motion vector variant for the HP reverb to take (a somewhat distant) 2nd place, and steamVR dead last.

Project Cars 2 and various other race/flight sims were usually a case of fidelity compromise in order to prevent steamVR’s ugly motion smoothing kicking in and introducing ghosting or oddball artefacts.

I’d say this updated smoothing variant puts it within spitting distance of Oculus ASW. Project Cars 2 felt very smooth for me with shadow, track, car and MSAA at combinations of med/high/ultra at either 120 or 144 hz which was something I never felt previosly even when those settings were low/med at 80-90Hz to try and squueze performance out of the game.

I could always tell when motion smoothing kicked in or was being utilised because track side detail would strobe or jitter. Now I can’t really spot it.

I haven’t tested DCS yet, which is where I find motion smoothing sinks or swims in terms of performance, but I am hopeful based on what i’ve seen thus far.

This all sounds really promising. Fingers crossed an official profile rolls out in the future.

Are we sure it’s dx12 only? I’m to understand the game has two launchers, a dx11 version and a dx12 version (for RTX effects).

Its spec listing on steam also seems to suggest it’s dx11 compliant.

I’ll co-sign this. The original observer works really well in vr. It would be nice if the remaster would too.

I have access to the Rift-S, Pimax 8K+ and Index. My personal take is the Rift-S is the most frictionless experience, be it in terms of setup or *perceived* performance. The Index is close and is a more technically advanced bit of gear, but the steamvr eco-system is starting to show its seams. The motion smoothing solution for Oculus is far more accomplished than the SteamVR equivalent. Project Cars 2 / DCS World with its graphics options turned all the way down with no super sampling on the Index *feels* about the same as playing it on a Oculus with maxed settings and some super sampling despite the Rift-S having a lower refresh rate. The Oculus ASW implementation simply resolves motion and reduces artefacts far better than the SteamVR equivalent. There’s also other odd quirks to SteamVR… like performance tanking if you have another GPU in your system running secondary monitors (even if there’s no other apps or additional windows open/running in the background).

That said, I found Vorpx works better with the Index and Pimax than Rift-S.

The clarity/res/fov of the index is great and has vastly reduced SDE over the Rift-S but the Index has an occasional glare/bloom/halo issues.

Oculus games work well under revive and is rather painless/frictionless. I was to understand Stormland was a resource hog or not optimised for non-Oculus HMDs but it worked fine for me with very little tweaking.

All the headsets have pros/cons and, with the exception of cost, those pros/cons put them on a level playing field or at least it really comes down to personal preference. The limited FOV killed me, so I used the Pimax and was happy but the quirks of its software and colour reproduction haunted me so I went with the Index and was happy and then the handholding and ASW quirks of steamVR annoyed me so I went back the Rift-S, and then the cycle continued…

I think 2021 and beyond will be exciting for HMDs, but if you’re more or less happy with what you have now, I don’t think switching to a currently available HMD is really going to be a game changer.

It’s not a definitive or official resource, but PCGamingWiki has it listed for G3D, Z3D and DirectVR. It should work.

I can confirm HL2 Update (along with various texture mods) still works with Vorpx.

I forgot to add I did find the oculus touch controls work better for me in vorpx than the index controllers, if only because they’ve got actual buttons to use as shift-modifers and for edge-peek/vorpx menu calling whereas with the index controllers ‘grip/squeeze’ equivelant is just not as functional/tactile. Obviously less of an issue if you use a keyboard/mouse/gamepad or are in a game that doesn’t need a lot of edge-peak usage or varied button mapping.

I’m using vorpx with the 8K+. It works really well.

I upgraded to the Pimax after using the rift-s but there was a massive gap between me using the two headsets so any impressions I have over image quality is maybe not the best. FOV is obviously better, colour production maybe the same or maybe the smallest bit not as good as the Rift-S.

I’ve only really gotten vorpx to work at the ‘normal’ or ‘small’ fov on the pimax, but only because I deliberately stuck with the default settings and couldn’t be bothered drilling much deeper into things to get that extra percent of FOV (which is typically distorted anyway) on games that really aren’t optimised for VR. As others have pointed out, the ‘small’ setting is still wider than quite a few HMDa already.

Oddly, I found vorpx with pimax needs less hand holding in setup for certain games than the Rift-S. Half-life 2 was a bit of a nightmare under the rift-s. There was a convoluted start-up procedure I had to maintain otherwise it would CTD. On first successful launch of HL2 under the rift-s, I also had to do a directVR scan and dial in some settings. Via the pimax, it launches no problem and works right out of the box. Maybe there was push-pull issue previously with oculus home and steamVR wrestling for control.

The only other thing I would say is to run games at full-res (or beyond for super-sampling) to get the most out of the pimax displays can be a bit heavy on performance in G3D. Frame rate and FOV is more important to me than image fidelity, so I’m happy to take a small hit on resolution to maintain those two other things. As such, I also found oculus’s asynchronous motion smoothing to be cleaner than what is used by steamvr/Pimax. I noticed this the most when playing a heavily modded fallout NV.

Finally, if vorpx is your main port of call for your HMD, I would recommend the deluxe audio strap mod for the pimax. It makes quickly getting in and out of the headset (or otherwise peaking at real world surroundings) for misc tasks (like finding your keyboard/mouse/gamepad or misc windows tasks) easier and is a nice quality of life improvement.

In summation, I’m very happy with the pimax and don’t really see myself going back to the rift-s (which I still think is a very good bit of equipment).

I’m interested in this as well. Using vorpx for a lot of games and very happy with it. Want to buy Pathologic 2 but not unless there’s a vaguely decent profile out for it.

I understand it’s not a widely popular game though, so the effort vs reward ratio is probably against it.

    Still… gotta keep hope alive.

I took the plunge on this because I was curious. It appears to work good with the overhaul mod. I used the auto-installer for the latest version of the mod (v5). I had to delete a .dll file for vorpx to hook properly (I suspect the mod used it for some post-processing reshade functionality) and drop down from the Ultra quality install preset because performance wasn’t great for me (Pimax HMD | RTX2080super | Ryzen 3900x).

I also got stuck in a game launching loop when quitting the game, but there is a fix listed in the mod readme for this. This issue apparently only occurs for some people.

On the subject of Aliens: Colonial Marines, is anyone aware if vorpx is compatible with the overhaul mod by TemplarGFX? It apparently fixes stated AI bugs and makes various other amendments. I’m tempted to try it but kinda want to wait for confirmation before taking the dive.
