Lockpicking should work with a 16:9 or 16:10 resolution. That’s a limitation of the game that messes up the lock picking screen at other apect ratios. For the hacking minigame try to temporarily disable Direct VR (ALT+B) before entering the minigame, alternatively you can disble positional Drect VR completely, with Geometry 3D you will still get the normal pos tracking. Weapon FOV: It’s dialed in that way because the value also affects the Pipboy.

BTW: Next vorpX update will have 100% perfect G3D shadows for Fallout 4.

Wow, VorpX support for Fallout 4 sure has come a long way!

In Direct VR Mode (in an Oculus Rift) after using the Game Settings Optimizer, everything is just… so good, it’s coming awfully close to rivaling many made-for-VR games.

The graphics quality is surprisingly good, the scale looks great (albeit maybe a little too zoomed in? Any way to fix that? The FoV is set at 110 so i’m not sure what the issue is) head tracking is very smooth and aiming weapons via headlook is the second-best thing to motion control support I can think of.

Initially had an issue where interacting with Terminals in Direct VR mode would cause me to slide backwards five feet or so and lower my view to floor-level (???) while sitting in a chair would cause me to float right into the ground, before teleporting back to the current map’s “starting point” (a failsafe of the game itself, I assume?) HOWEVER that problem went away after using the Game Settings Optimizer, and trying to interact with a terminal from third-person view instead of first-person. Not sure which of the two fixed the issue, but everything seems fine now.

Hand/Weapon scale in first-person is still unfortunately an issue though, and I’ve tried using the console command “fov 120” followed by “refreshini” but it doesn’t seem to do anything, at least not in Direct VR Mode..

Adjusting the “First person FoV” setting in the VorpX menu comes pretty close to fixing the problem, IIRC it caps at a setting of +30? At that point the hand/weapon scale is STILL too large, but significantly better than at a setting of ~0. I feel like if that setting could go up to +50 or +60 we might reach a natural scale..

Of course the caveat is that the Pip Boy is ‘virtually unreadable’ anywhere above a setting of ‘0’, and imo looks best around -3 to -6. Is it at all possible that future VorpX patches could allow for the first person FoV scale to toggle between two numbers, dynamically, based on whether the pip boy is being activated or not? Alternatively does anyone know of a mod that shrinks down the scale of hands and weapons but does not affect the pip-boy at all?

Also experienced the occasional hard CTD, once when trying to activate Direct VR mode, and the last time when making the area transition from Vault 111 to the surface.. but honestly it wouldn’t feel like a Bethesda game without the occasional CTD, right? Hopefully the next time I load the game up I’ll be able to progress past there without further issues.

If anyone knows ways to enhance the experience further, feel free to suggest them. And Ralf, you keep up the good work! After getting used to VR, I’m not sure I could play games like this without VorpX!

I went through the Troubleshooting FAQ and still get stuck.

Fallout 4 starts, shows the starting screen with that vintage TV Test Screen and the logo from Vorpx, then it freezes and nothing more happens.

I have to open the Task manager and stop all tasks manually to get back to the desktop.

If i stop Vorpx and start FO4 normally it works fine.

Any Idea? If not it was a waste of 30Bucks!

BTW, this forum software is as fast as a snail!

    Hey everyone,
I’m running HTC Vive on an older laptop (i7-4700 and a GTX 770m), and originally planned to make an extended step-by-step guide on running Morrowind with modern mods through Vorpx.. citing my “low-spec” build and how it runs, versus my future high-spec build so others could have ease of access to run a modern rendition of many people’s favourite RPG, but I have encountered a big problem that has gotten in the way of such a thing:

Due to the fact that I have an older laptop(I’m assuming), running SteamVR with Direct Mode on will not work(and oh god have I tried), which in turn, unfortunately, neuters the functionality of Vorpx.

On the plus side, I’ve managed to circumvent this issue through using the following steps:
    1.Turning off SteamVR
    2. Choosing “Generic VR headset (extended mode)” option under the Device Selection drop-down in general options
    3. Choosing the “Show on all monitors(clone)” selection.
    4. Run the game.
    5. (Optional) While running the game, re-enabling SteamVR,going into SteamVR settings, and enabling the vive headphone functionality in the Audio Settings tab.

This works fine and dandy with geometry-3d (and its gorgeous by the way!) and DirectVR setting seems to inject fine as well. Minus one critical feature: Head-tracking. Head-tracking is turned off by default, and is the only thing missing to an otherwise totally functional experience for people in my situation.

Ralf has made it clear in previous posts that Direct Mode is what Vorpx is programmed for, but considering its current near-perfect functionality in extended mode (Testing on Fallout: New Vegas), what i’m wondering is if there is any way I could fiddle with the settings to enable head-tracking? Maybe using a previous version would help out as well? Any advice on the situation is much appreciated, I can get by for these few months without head-tracking but if there was another way to go about this I’d love to give it a whirl. Thanks for reading, I hope this issue can be resolved so others with sub-par gaming rigs can jump in on the VR experience before building their super rigs as I have :)

Hi, Ralf! Could you please return back the possibility for gamepad key mapping even if a game supports the gamepad natively? This feature in vorpx was awesome! One can do so much more with it than just using the in-game control options. You could make this feature available only through the advanced vorpx options, if you prefer to emphasize native support. Actually, there is also a minor problem with the new approach. When I use xbox controller for Fallout 3, and lock the Y movement on the right stick, there is a judder whenever I accidentally move the stick along the Y axis.

Please first try remove all mods, that might be a factor.

Positional Direct VR failing isn’t really aproblem in Fallout New Vegas BTW. The game still has the default Geometry 3D positional tracking without it.

Check your frame rate (ALT+F). You need constant 45fps for smooth gameplay. Reduce the graphics detail (Fallout 4 launcher) or/and use the Z3D mode in vorpX if your framerate falls below 45fps. For a 1070 the “Medium” graphics preset is usually a good choice.

    Hi all,

Been a while since I’ve been posting. Been doing more playing than talking for a change.

Some may remember a few months back, I did a post/series of posts on Skyrim and the Titan XP. My system consisted of the Titan, a 4790k clocked to 4.8ghz and 2400 mhz ram fed by SSD’s in Raid0 and I was able to mod Oldrim pretty extensively and get playable performance at high resolutions.

Finally I have been able to upgrade to a Kaby Lake 7700K which I have clocked to 5ghz on a Z170 Maximus with the normal bios upgrade (for Kaby) and am running 4266mhz TridentZ ram. Although I haven’t spent time getting hard numbers, I wanted to pass on some of my experiences and conclusions thus far.

First of all, there has been a metric ton of blather about Kaby and how it’s just a higher clocked Skylake. And that is true. However, what all the tech guys seemed to have missed out on is that Kaby’s memory controller can handle some seriously stupid fast ram. And guess what benefits VR/VorpX better than anything I have yet found? Fast ram.

I noticed a significant boost to performance running Skyrim under VorpX back when I did the Titan posts, moving from 1600/1866 DDR3 to 2400Mhz DDR3. Outside of VR, the increase holds as well and Digital Foundry and others verified that open world games like Fallout/Witcher/Skyrim/GTA do in fact see serious benefit that scales as speed goes up. The old wisdom no longer applies at least in open world games. Those textures moving in and out benefit from faster ram speed.

Since going to my new setup, I have been able to shut off fluid sync and no longer have stutter/’flashback’ issues when doing it at 1920×1440 and 1.4 SS. Framerates stay mostly above 45 with a 100 mod loadout and gameplay is smooth. This was impossible before.

So basically, I just wanted to let you all know that yes, faster ram is a good thing. Run the fastest your CPU/motherboard can handle and you WILL have a more enjoyable experience. Oh…and the added 200 mhz on the clock is nothing to sneeze at either and only benefits the process as Sky/Fallout are CPU bound and clock sensitive games to begin with.

I managed to finally get Vorpx working with ReShade. I tested it with Fallout 4, but in Geometry mode whilst having ReShade injected the right eye goes black, this could look incredible with ReShade, but another bump in the road, any idea why it would make the right eye view go blank?

    Regards

    how?

    What Reshade dll? DX9? Dx11?

Hello I have a problem with fallout4 in DirectVR mode.
DirectVR works perfectly on skyrim with mod
and NewVegas with mod but when I try on fallout4
without any mod and vanillia ini file I encounter the following problem

The screen freeze when launching the Rotation scan
And the PC no longer responds for 5 to 10 minutes
if I do a CtrlAltSupp I see that several
windows process uses 100% disk and the scan is unresponsive

    system (ntoskrnl.exe)
    com surrgate (dllhost.exe)
    processus hôte de service (svchost.exe)
    antimalware service executable (MsMpEng.exe)
    runtime broker (RuntimeBroker.exe)

I have blocked several windows processes
and this disk usage problem only occurs in
Fallout4 during the scan, I no longer experience this problem at startup
because it is a common problem on windows 10

I updated the profile by downloading from the cloud

Here is the list of exceptions I added to windows defender
    So it does not scan:

    Files and folder :
    Animation Labs\VorpX (folder)
    Animation Labs\vorpxConfig.exe
    Animation Labs\vorpxControl.exe
    Animation Labs\vorpxControl64.dat
    Animation Labs\vorpxDesktop.exe
    steamapps\common\Fallout 4 (folder)
    ProgramFiles (x86)\Windows Defender (folder)
    Program Files\Windows Defender (folder)
    Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe
    ProgramData\Animation Labs\vorpX (folder)

    Process:
    vorpxControl
    vorpxControl.exe
    vorpxControl64
    vorpxControl64.dat
    vorpx
    vorpX VR Driver Control
vorpX VR Driver Control (32 bits)
    vorpXscan64
    vorpXscan64.exe

I also tried without windows defender by installing
    Avast but nothing change.

with the many test I did with different savegame
and in different cell the worst is that it succeeded only once
the scan rotation and fov was ok and i was able to enjoy the game in DirectVR
but since then it’s always the same problem that forces me
sometimes to force reboot if the CtrlAltSupp does not work.

I don’t know what to try next
then if you have an idea I thank you in advance.

Sorry english is not my first language.
I use FallOut4 In French could it be the problem ?
I notice during the problem that the notification icon
for the volume was on mute and came back normal when i quit fallout.

You can run games at any resolution you want with vorpX. The higher, the better the image quality. Recommendations are: 1280×1024 (performance), 1600×1200 (balanced), 1920×1440 (quality). 4:3/5:4 resolutions are generally best for vorpX, not widescreen.

Please also make sure to update the Fallout 4 profile from the cloud. Yesterdays Fallout 4 update broke the Direct VR scanner, which you can address by downloading the latest version of the “Fallout 4 [vorpX]” profile from the cloud.

You may also consider to set Antialising to “Off” in the Fallout 4 launcher. Both AA modes used by Fallout 4 blur the image.

This should have been an answer to your Fallout 4 thread I guess? The resolution is of no concern for Direct VR. If you play with Geometry 3D you have the normal positional tracking available. So with rotation and FOV you are perfectly fine. Those are the most important ones. Positional Direct VR is the icing on the cake.

There always is a certain chance of failure, for more details on that please check the hint text that is shown during each scan. The next vorpX version will have changes regarding FO4 Direct VR too, with some luck that will help with your position issue.

I don’t have any mods (I deleted everything minus saves… including ini files… reinstalled… started… quit… Ran Game Settings Optimizer for fallout 4. Tried again.

This time, I started from scratch (previously I was running a new game that was just out of the vault… I started over).

I got the first two working, but not the last one (positional I believe). Ran through the vault. Got outside and tried again (still only the first two worked). Saved… Loaded… and now only the first two are working again :(

Also, I’m still only getting the Aspect Ratio when launching for 16:9 in the graphic adapter settings. I’m guessing this is part of the problem. The dropdown itself is grayed out. I also don’t have an option to select all available resolutions like in Skyrim.

If I start in windowed mode, I get 16:10 also, but still no 4:3.

Should I be modifying the ini file for the resolution and trying again?

    Thanks
    Drake

Did you run the Direct VR scanner after entering the actual gameworld to adjust field of view and head tracking?

Direct VR games (incl. Skyrim) are the ones that work best. Current games with Direct VR support are: Fallout 4, Skyrim, Skyrim Special Edition, Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2, Borderlands 2, Bishock (original), Bioshock 2 (original), Bioshock Infinite, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Black Mesa Source. More to come shortly.

For further Skyrim hints please check this recent Reddit thread:

First you should always be aware that vorpX applies VR functionality to games that were never meant to be played in VR. So depending on how you define 100%, either only a few may work without issues or most.

If you are searching for the games that work best, the ones with the new Direct VR feature, which provides automatic 1:1 head tracking and FOV adjustment, are clearly closest to a native experience. Others will require more tweaking. Currently this includes (more to come shortly):

Fallout 4, Skyrim, Skyrim Special Edition, Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2, Borderlands 2, Bishock (original), Bioshock 2 (original), Bioshock Infinite, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Black Mesa Source.
