    Hi Ralf,

I’ve been having the same problem as the guys above, I haven’t fixed the problem yet however the nature of the beast has changed which will hopefully lead to a solution. Before this turns into a thesis I’d like to state that Oculus Apps, 3rd party apps (whirlwig etc), vorpx desktop viewer and video player (VLC) are working fine.

    I’m running the following:
    Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
Nvidia driver 364.72 – latest non beta.
    Oculus runtime 1.3
    Vorpx 16.1.2
    Avast Antivirus
I don’t run any other apps that hook into the games and I have ensured that Nvidia shadowplay is disabled.

Initially I was receiving the “Sorry, we’re having trouble loading vorpControl.exe.” error message however VorpX Control was still running, upon trying to launch supported titles from steam, Uplay I would receive “Sorry, we’re having trouble loading xxx.exe”.
    – VorpX was running as administrator
    – Tried disabling antivirus temporarily
    – Tried Far Cry 3 + 4 and GTA V

I completely removed VorpX and the Oculus software from my workstation, restarted and reinstalled both of them with antivirus temporarily disabled. The Vorpx behaviour was more or less the same however the game hooking was completely broken this time around (no more Sorry, we’re having trouble loading xxx.exe). Launching games via steam/uplay would result in generic error messages or time outs if Vorpx was running (installed and running with administrator rights). If I attempted to launch the game exe’s directly I would receive access denied error messages, pausing the Vorpx watcher would result in the game launching normally.

I’ve been looking through some procmon logs for clues, unfortunately I don’t have a sound understanding of what’s going on here but I noted the following:

VorpXControl.exe failed to create these files immediately.
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\games\Far Cry 3\bin\d3d9.dll
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\games\Far Cry 3\bin\dxgi.dll
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\games\Far Cry 3\bin\d3d11.dll
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\games\Far Cry 3\bin\d3d10.dll

The farycry3.exe, vorpxcontrol.exe and OculusVR.exe continue after this point. Logs end abrubtly after the initialisation of audio drivers, haven’t been able to narrow down the culprit yet. I suspect it’s Avast antivirus as it’s still got it’s finger in the pie in procmon when its supposed be disabled…

I have found that killing off Avast antivirus has resulted in games working (still takes 2-3 attempts).

Hello, I haven’t purchased this program yet but I probably will in the near future when my CV1 arrives in a few weeks.

I signed up for this specifically because VorpX appear to be a must purchase with the Oculus Rift. I am planning to buy the CV1 but won’t have a delivery until July or perhaps by end of summer 2016. Can we assume that Vorpx will evolve and support the consumer version of the Oculus Rift? The Rift + VorpX looks like the deciding factor for me in terms of which way to go as far as experimenting with VR technology.

I am an avid Nvidia 3D Vision user using a 120 Inch projector setup for some real immersive gaming experiences. I have been active in the Nvidia 3D Vision forums and the work that the community has done on game fixes and tweaks for 3D Stereoscopic is mind blowing. Dead Space series in 3D Vision on a 120 Inch screen is just amazing and has to be experienced to appreciate. I’ve seen a user inject the 3D Vision fix with Far Cry Primal along with VorpX to obtain good results.

Far Cry Primal + VorpX + 3D Vision Fix

Question for anyone here, can these fixes be useful with VorpX? The 3D Vision fixes has ini files that can be set to inject or chain DLL’s. You have to visit the two links that I included in the body of this post. The scope of all that has been done in the last several years is a must look for those that are interested in real immersive gaming for the PC.

Helixmod – 3D Vision Game Fixes & Tweaks

    Nvidia 3D Forums – Active

VR appears to be steps forward in immersive gaming and based on some Youtube videos of users using VorpX with the Rift, this seems like the right fit for me. Room scaling for the Vive seems half baked to me and while it has glowing reviews, I cannot justify the extra cost for this especially for the first time I am spending any money on VR technology. I suspect I should get several hours of enjoyment with VorpX and the Rift even though it’s not fully refined. Anyone who has this kind of setup, please give me your thoughts and comments for the amount of enjoyment, if any that you’ve had. I realize this cost will be more experimental into VR gaming until the industry matures.

    Cheers all!

Just wondering is Far Cry 3 no longer working? I did all the troubelshooting steps around here. At first it kept telling me FarCry3 has stopped working as soon as it should have come up on the Rift. After going through all the troubleshooting (disabling overlay, creating shortcut, pausing the watcher, Uplay Offline mode, now it just no longer hooks and starts on the desktop normally.

99% sure I did everything listed all over the forum just wondering if anyone else is able to get it working or if its possibly a uplay update that is now preventing it from working.

Vorpx was working fine for me in every game

    Skyrim
    Zombiu
    Dirt 3
    Aliens vs predator 3
    Penumbra
    Amnesia
    Bfbc2
    Alien isolation
    Necrovision
    Gtaiv
    Gtav
    Bf3/4
    Payday 2
    Far cry 3/4

Then after the 0.9.1 version I got the error “unnable to initiate oculus runtime”, this was because the new driver invalidated every occulus runtime version below version 7.

Now only Skyrim and Zombiu work.

Updating to windows 10 made every game on steam and several others crash instantly upon starting, despite them working perfectly before the update to 0.9.1. and after several days of troubleshooting I am certain the problem is privilege related, to uncontingent framework dependencies, and those are basically just i/o. What really changed was not changed by me.

Im guessing the reason you couldnt use clone screen but used direct to HMD is the same reason i am getting the crashes, because the process that simulates direct to hmd is what is malfunctioning.

So I am instead forced to do a system restore to fix this, but the vorpx autoupdater is a pain, I have to be offline to use it.

If there was an option to not update beyond a certain patch i would be very grateful, at the current time whatever features are added do not matter because i am unnable to run almost any games with them anyway.

In windows 10 there is slight mouseacceleration which makes it unservicable for practising counterstrike unreal tournament or starcraft II at a competitive level, and i am not talking about the improved pointer precision feature.

I would bore you with links and videos of how i can compete at any level with the occulus rift as the FOV inflation makes you extremely accurate (try it for yourself if you dont believe me!) but giving an alternative just for me and a couple of others who struggle with windows 10 is a longshot anyway.

The reason i dont mind using direct to HMD is because i have gotten extremely good at running it, first i turn the HMD on, then i use launchy to start executibles using touch such as Vorpx, i never have to see them even open. For windows i close one eye and have perfect perception, i have to admit it was very difficult in the beginning and i understand the efficiency is much greater with the “Direct HMD access from apps” mode, but the compatability renders this useless for consumers that are not developers.

Are you certain 0.9.1. works with the games i have listed?

Either way vorpx is the best software for vr gaming, the customization perticularly with the real time IPD, 2d FOV and headtracking sensitivity was worth every penny i spent, when fully optimized i can play for days and not get motionsickness, so thank you deerly Ralf and the vorpx team.

    @Ralf:

Although Vorpx hadn’t been sandboxed I think some windows files had and that seems to be the cause. It’s stopped corrupting now.

Still don’t know why vorpx isn’t setting the FOV on games using the optimiser. It’s saying it has but not reflected in the game. I’m setting FOV manually at the moment.

    @adisplinter

IPD really made a difference with Metro LL but I didn’t realise the FOV wasn’t being set in other games like Arma 3 and Crysis 3. Can only go so far using the vorpx FOV/image zoom so I have to manually edit the FOV for these games. Arma 3 looks correct since manually editing FOV to 120.

My IPD of 67 I got via my Oculus rift profile (after doing the calibration.

Serious Sam 3 looks great on vorpx.

I’ve been spending time with Crysis 3, Arma III and other games and all have this zoomed in view that makes them unplayable. Adjusting FOV to 120 doesn’t help here and IPD also doesn’t make any difference.

So it seems like the only way I can play these games is with cinema mode which isn’t as immersive and I can’t look all around me.

I’m really starting to feel like I’m wasting my time with it. Trying to reduce the zoomed in view on every game. I use the game optimisations and in some cases manually edit the game’s FOV but the games still don’t look right.

Does it make a difference which Nvidia graphics driver? I’m using an older one: 350.12

The whole thing is starting to really annoy me because it’s so far removed from the visuals I get with native oculus games.

One very important thing regarding the “zoomed in” effect, that almost everyone misses, including me, is calibrating IPD in vorpX’s ingame menu. So do calibrate your IPD following the on-screen instructions, trust me…it does wonders to the resulting image both for FOV and 3D depth and presence feeling.

I tried a few games like Crysis, Fallout 3, BF3, BF4 etc and no matter what methods I used for improving FOV, including FOV enhancement tools and vorpX’s FOV options and zoom, it still felt a bit “zoomed in”, especially on close range objects.
So after finishing the whole BF3 campaign using Flawless Widescreen set to max FOV, Letterbox 1 aspect ratio, 2D FOV-Enhancement and 85 % image zoom, I started BF4 (same settings) which had better 3D definition but after playing for a while, the “zoomed in” feeling became kind of annoying and broke the immersion. Besides that I also got some blurry vision for half an hour after playing, until my eyes readjusted.

Then I started messing with Calibrate IPD option from page 2 (display) and found that 64.00 which is the default average for most males was wrong, so I re-calibrated using the on-screen instructions and ended up at 60.75 where the cross was perfectly visible and most clear (I do not suffer from any vision issues, I see very sharp, near and far).I was stunned by the result as the “zoomed-in” issue was completely gone, the FOV was just like as in an Oculus native supported game like Alien Isolation or HL2. I was stunned even more when I instantly noticed a huge improvement to 3D depth, the distance from my face to every object in the 3D environment was very clear which is a huge boost for presence feeling. And after playing for a couple of hours without any pause, when I exited, the blurry vision was greatly diminished and it completely disappeared in 1-2 minutes.

So this is the most important thing to do besides setting the FOV. You might end up higher than me, closer to 62-63…in my case, might be the VR Cover cloth which I applied over the DK2 and puts a bit of higher distance between the lens and the eyes, although the VR native games didn’t gave me any problems with the 64 IPD default setting in Oculus profile. I’m not sure how that is possible, maybe it differs from one game to the next, but the result is amazing.

Looks like you’re right! Every game has been massively zoomed-in and even after I spent hours last night following the advice to change FOV in game, in vorpx or by modding game ini, it made absolutely no difference. So after finding your advice here I went in to metro ll and adjusted the IPD (haven’t used the in-game calibrate yet – i simply increased the IPD and now the game doesn’t look zoomed in anymore. Also changed the z-buffer mode and increased 3d effect. So many people are posting here about zoomed-in problems and the standard advice to mod FOV isn’t working. Well done for sorting it out!

I have the weirdest problem ever. I used vorpx for a few days to watch videos and play Far Cry 3 without problems (except the hooking prob in 64bit MPC). But since yesterday there’s nothing displayed in the DK2 except the Health Warning at the Start! Everything is clearly getting hooked, the Blue Light is turned on and the Health Warning is shown. But nothing else! And it doesn’t matter if videos or games, it just stays black. It’s driving me crazy because I know this is hard to believe. I had absolutely NO system changes (Win7 64bit, Geforce 970 latest Drivers) and the DK2 works fine with everything else (Demo Scene, other Stuff). I’m totally stumped here…please help anybody!

After adding “FC3UpdaterSteam.exe” to the List of excluded Programs I got it to run. However the DX11 version crashes on start and with the DX9 headtracking doesn’t work well and Geometry 3d doesn’t seem to work at all. Is it as bad with the non-steam Far Cry 3 ? Any tips for improving that experience ?

@ Karlor : Not sure if I understand the question. What do you mean by ‘spectator other screen display thing’? If that means the mirror window, you should be able to use it with just a little performance impact. Normally there should be no need to adjust settings to use it.

@ Nikolay : In general the raw FPS are about 10-20% lower than before due to the far more complicated rendering pipeline that was necessary for the Direct Mode. but that’s countered by the async timewarp, which makes things still look smoother. Can’t really imagine Mirror’s Edge at 120fps in G3D on your 960. With a GTX970 it always ran around 60 before in the start area. Crysis 3 didn’t have G3D before, 15-20 still sounds quite low even for a GTX960 in Crysis 3. With a GTX970 the game runs at about 35-40fps in the start area (ship in rain) when using Geometry 3D. Low settings IIRC. From testing various GPUs I would say a GTX970 is a reasonable recommendation, it’s also what Oculus suggests for the Rift in general.

You could also take a look at the Reddit thread linked below for advanced tweaking, a similar advanced tweaking sticky will follow here shortly:

vorpX 0.9 performance tip: custom 8:9 resolution
    byu/eVRydayVR inoculus

@ Cy : That sounds odd, especially since it happens in games that run perfectly fine at 75fps. Anything special about your setup (SLI, Optimus or uncommon in any other way)? Can you make a video of this? A frame by frame analysis might be helpful to at least understand what’s happening. I could provide you with an FTP account to upload it.

I’ll take a look at it, but for protected Blu-Rays (and thus most commercial Blu-Rays) that’s probably impossible. The whole pipeline from the drive to the monitor is encrypted in this case, so even if there is a way to grab the movie somewhere in between, it would almost certainly show as garbage/noise. Win DVD and Cyberlink have expensive licenses and probably also have to follow pretty strict rules in regard to protecting the Blu-Ray encryption to be allowed to play Blu-Rays on the PC.

With the next vorpX version it will be quite easy to use Direct3D based movie players like VLC, which is really nice with vorpX’s so far unrivaled high quality dynamic lighting in Virtual Cinema Mode. But for protected content that’s not much help, of course.

    Currently,I have problems with 3d z buffer(z Normal/z-adaptative)in two games,
these games are far cry 4 and Battlefield 4.
Far Cry 4 certainly shows no 3d for me,never.
Battlefield 4 produces a flicker every few seconds or interference, causing loss of 3d,even vorpx ingame menu.
These errors are reported, but we are waiting for some solution.

On the Metro titles, the situation for me is:
    Metro 2033 standard version:
    3D Geometry in dx9 (Yes) 3D Geometry in DX11(No)
    3D Z-normal/adaptative DX9(Yes) 3D Z-normal/adaptative in DX11(Yes)

    Metro Last Light standard(complete edition):
Geometry in DX9(No) Geometry in DX11(No)Also causes blackscreen in DX9(vorpx)
    3d Z-Normal/adaptative in DX9(No) DX11(Yes)
This tittle, clearly need revision to vorpx geometry.

    Metro 2033 redux:
Geometry in DX9(No) Geometry in DX11(No)
    3D Z-normal/adaptative in DX9(Yes) 3D Z-normal/adaptative in DX11(Yes)

    Metro Last Light redux:
    3D Geometry in DX11(No)
    3D Z-Normal/adaptative in DX11(Yes)

    All tested on i7 3770K oc4,2 and NVIDIA GTX 980 g1 gaming,oculus rift dk2,
    Windows 8.1

Thanks grumdark for the suggestion on MSAA however it still wont kick in to stereo 3d. I am not sure the 3d-z is working in other games either for me. Is farCry 4 a zbuffer game? If it is I also get no 3d. Also no luck with Metro 2033 redux. Geometry works fine where that is applicable. As you can see, I bought a lot of games on Steam’s summer sale to try with Vorpx :). So far Mirrors edge works well in geometry as well as Borderlands. I guess I could switch those to z-3d and see what happens. ill report back once I try them.
