The problem with DX12 in Witcher 3 is that it’s not really DX12. Instead they use a DX11 > 12 wrapper that (unsurprisingly) clashes with vorpX. On top of that they implemented some RTX stuff. I’m 99% certain the whole thing is an RTX marketing stunt. They – almost certainly intentionally – made the raster shadows almost invisible and removed the best possible ambient occlusion method to make RTX stand out visually. Would be REALLY hard to spot any difference between the original version and RTX otherwise. I’m still surprised the internet wasn’t on fire.

@Ralf The mod you are looking for is Gervant First Person and it is absolutely brilliant. Full control over when you are in 1st v.s. 3rd person by context. Witcher 3 has animation issues with first person combat unless you run something that greatly slow game-time, for example, so if you prefer you can simply have GFP switch to 3rd person for combat. It has FOV controls, animation controls, a VR mode that hides your body if you prefer when in 1st person. It’s a very long list of features and all of them work pretty darn well.

IMHO you should start with that mod as a baseline for anything you do that’s Witcher 3 + vorpX related because that mod has already done a LOT of the work that you would otherwise need to do. I’ll certainly never play Witcher 3 without it (well, unless you implemented an entire set of similar features through vorpX, but that sounds like a huge amount of work.)

Unfortunately Witcher 3 (DX12 mode) is not currently supported through vorpX so I’m not able to say how well GFP plays with vorpX. Hoping an future vorpX release will work.

The mod that comes with the profile only does 3D and FOV currently. The camera controls aren’t changed at all, hence moving your head feels kind of weird. Unfortunately the Witcher 3 camera is implemented in a way that makes converting it into something that works well in VR via the game’s scripting language a major PITA.

There is a first person mod for the game though that you can download from nexusmods. I haven’t tried it myself, but reportedly it works together with the profile’s 3D/FOV mod. Alternatively you can switch to immersive screen mode in the vorpX menu.

Hi Ralf, just some feedback on the Witcher 3, AFR works great. however headroll is reversed. positional tracking works on the x axis only i.e left and right.

Also tried an older version of the witcher 3 from gog, without any of the patches. That didn’t work either.

Found another game in my library (trine 2) that works with vorpx. That one works. So apparently its something specific to witcher 3

Ah, never mind, i found it! I disabled headtracking, and then disabled “override x-box gamepad” (or some such). Now i got back my gamepad right stick, and some of the controls of The Witcher 3, exclusive to the right stick, are finally accessible.

This solves one of my biggest gripes with vorpX: that i couldn’t use my gamepad natively. But i was wrong, obviously.

I hope that someday we’ll get a full documentation, with every single setting properly explained. That would prevent much confusion. :)

Desktop viewer works fine. Witcher 3 does not. (only game I tried)

When I go in game, SteamVR launches, and I get the SteamVR loading screen with the grid pattern drawn on the ground. Then, when the view in the headset starts streaming the sound from the game, the screen goes black.

    any help?

I am also unable to run any game that I purchased from the Steam store in VR, Although I could yesterday, before I installed Vorpx. Now when I try to launch a game from the steam store, Vorpx tries to hook into it, and prevents it from launching.

*edit* nevermind about the last part. I was able to exclude steam games from whatever Vorpx tries to hook into. (trivially) still no witcher though.

I’m also trying to play The Witcher 2, but instead, I have crazy twitching “between eyes” during cinematics, and anything that isn’t 3DGeo won’t work (even restarting)… so I would say The Witcher 2 is broken at the moment :S

EDIT: Also, is it just me or the game suffers too of HORRIBLE color banding issues…?

As I said, I also tried the local profile for that game. There were only 2 possible 3D: z adaptive and z-normal. Not geometry. Changing the 3D strength changed nothing. I have shadows on low, and I’m running in window mode. Following your advice, I created a copy of the base unity 5, then applied it before I ran the game. No 3-D. It does hook, with all profiles, and I can play full VR, but not immersive mode.

As a test, I tried my GOG version of Witcher 3 with the local profile. There, it worked. 3D in immersive works on all 3 settings.

    Kind of at a loss…

OK, not all of these are tested through vorpX at this point but I’ve found the following thus far:

    1) In Witcher 3NG there is no depth in the generated frames at all – OR the depth is there but something else need to be tweaked before it will work. Every generate frame goes flat. (ReShade method.)
    2) In Hogwarts there IS depth in the generated frames, however something will need tweaking before it is really usable as it causes significant issues with the halo artifacts. (ReShade method.)
    3) Cyberpunk – Untested at this point as the moment I turn on frame generation the title crashes – most likely due to the vorpX Cyberpunk mod. I plan to try testing that soon another way.

But the good news is that Hogwarts shows that if the issues with the halo artifacts can be resolved then it will likely be possible for this to work. Still have the HAGS issues to deal with as well of course.

The big Witcher 3 4.0 update is releasing today and – as expected – petty much completely breaks the Witcher 3 vorpX profile.

Since despite the game’s age this probably is one of the most interesting game releases this year for many, I have been working on enhancing the profile for a while now with a dedicated vorpX connection mod. Providing additional features like DirectVR (AFR) 3D and a custom camera. There are still a few things to iron out, but as I had hoped the mod works fine with the new update in general, so expect an updated vorpX together with a hugely enhanced Witcher 3 vorpX experience shortly.

Together with this comes a brand new update system specifically for profiles with game specific extra (mod) data, removing the need for full vorpX updates whenever a game update breaks connection mods. That will make handling special profiles like this one a lot easier for both me and you.
